Compare AI stocks on the same fiscal period, accounting basis, and market-price date—not on a single headline growth number. Start by separating chip designers from cloud platforms, align annual or trailing-12-month revenue, measure AI-related revenue alongside total-company results, compare GAAP margins and cash generation, then calculate valuation multiples with one clearly stated share price and analyst-estimate convention. On the published figures available for 2026, NVIDIA shows the fastest growth and highest gross margin in this set, Microsoft offers the largest diversified revenue base, and AMD combines a smaller base with accelerating data-center sales. None is automatically the “best” stock: the decision depends on whether the premium valuation is justified by durable growth, margin quality, cash flow, and execution risk.
What does comparing AI stocks actually mean?
“AI stock” is an exposure label, not a consistent business category. A semiconductor designer sells processors and related systems; a cloud platform sells computing capacity, software, and subscriptions; another company may monetize AI through advertising, enterprise applications, or services. Comparing their total revenue growth without identifying the business model can produce a misleading ranking.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDefine the investable universe before collecting numbers. A practical first cut is:
- Infrastructure designers: companies such as NVIDIA and AMD, whose results are driven by accelerators, CPUs, networking, systems, and the semiconductor cycle.
- Cloud and software platforms: companies such as Microsoft, where AI demand is reported inside a much broader cloud and productivity portfolio.
- Other AI-exposed businesses: firms in applications, data services, networking, or equipment that may disclose only partial AI exposure.
Then decide whether your comparison is company-wide or AI-segment focused. A total-company comparison answers which business has the strongest overall economics. An AI-segment comparison answers which operation is growing fastest, but it requires segment definitions that are often not identical.

How do you align the periods before comparing growth?
Use one fiscal-year window or one trailing-12-month window for every company. A full-year figure should never be ranked directly against another company’s single quarter. Fiscal years can end in different months, so record each company’s period-end date and state whether the comparison is fiscal-year, calendar-year, or trailing-12-month.
The current published examples illustrate why this matters. NVIDIA and Microsoft report fiscal 2026 figures, while AMD’s principal annual result is fiscal 2025; AMD also reports a separate second-quarter fiscal 2026 result. Those are useful data points, but they are not one synchronized period.
| Company | Period | Total revenue and growth | AI-related or data-center revenue | Profitability evidence | What the figure can and cannot show |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA | FY2026 | $215.938 billion; up 65% year over year | Data-center revenue of $193.7 billion; up 68% | 71.1% GAAP gross margin; $130.387 billion operating income | Shows exceptional annual growth and margin for the reported period; the valuation still requires a price-date calculation. |
| Microsoft | FY2026 | $331.839 billion; up 18% | Microsoft Cloud revenue of $214.4 billion; up 27% | $155.237 billion operating income | Shows a large, diversified platform; Microsoft Cloud is broader than AI alone. |
| AMD | FY2025 | $34.6 billion; up 34% | Data-center revenue of $16.6 billion; up 32% | 50% gross margin | Shows annual results on a different period from the two fiscal-2026 examples. |
| AMD | Q2 FY2026 | $11.536 billion; up 50% year over year | Segment detail is reported for the quarter, not an annual comparison here | 54% GAAP gross margin | Useful evidence of acceleration, but it must not be ranked beside full-year growth. |
For a strict peer table, either move every company to trailing-12-month figures or wait until all companies have reported the same fiscal-year window. If you show mixed periods for context, label them prominently and do not produce a single winner from the mixed set.
How should you calculate and interpret revenue growth?
Calculate year-over-year growth as (current-period revenue − prior-period revenue) ÷ prior-period revenue. Record the absolute revenue as well as the percentage. A smaller company can post a higher percentage from a low base, while a larger platform can add more dollars with a lower rate.
Separate total-company growth from AI exposure
Compute the AI-related share of revenue as AI-related segment revenue ÷ total-company revenue, using the same period and the company’s own segment definition. In the published examples, NVIDIA’s data-center business is the overwhelming majority of total revenue, whereas Microsoft Cloud includes infrastructure, applications, and other services beyond AI. AMD’s data-center business is a substantial but not complete part of its company-wide result.
Do not call a cloud segment “AI revenue” unless the company explicitly reports an AI-only figure. Instead, describe it as a broader proxy and explain what it contains. This prevents a platform with a large non-AI cloud business from appearing directly comparable to a chip designer whose data-center segment is closely tied to accelerated-computing demand.

Look at the trend, not only one growth rate
Build at least three comparable annual observations where available. A compound annual growth rate (CAGR) is (ending revenue ÷ beginning revenue)^(1 ÷ number of years) − 1. Add sequential growth for quarterly monitoring, but do not substitute sequential growth for year-over-year growth when seasonality is material.
Check whether growth comes from volume, price, product mix, acquisitions, or currency. A surge concentrated in one product generation may not persist. Conversely, a slower-growing platform can have more durable recurring revenue. The calculation describes what happened; the business explanation determines how much of it might continue.
How do you compare profitability on a consistent basis?
Keep GAAP and adjusted results in separate columns. At minimum, calculate gross margin, operating margin, net margin, and free-cash-flow margin from the same period. Do not place a non-GAAP margin for one company beside a GAAP margin for another and call the difference an operating advantage.
| Measure | Formula | Why it matters | Required qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gross margin | (revenue − cost of revenue) ÷ revenue |
Shows pricing power, product mix, and manufacturing economics before operating expenses. | Check inventory charges, purchase-accounting effects, and whether the figure is GAAP or adjusted. |
| Operating margin | operating income ÷ revenue |
Shows how much remains after research, sales, administration, and other operating costs. | Use the same accounting basis and period; disclose unusual restructuring or acquisition costs. |
| Net margin | net income ÷ revenue |
Captures interest, taxes, investment gains or losses, and non-operating items. | It can move for reasons unrelated to core operations, so pair it with operating margin. |
| Free-cash-flow margin | free cash flow ÷ revenue |
Tests how much reported sales become discretionary cash after capital spending. | Define free cash flow explicitly and keep capital-expenditure treatment consistent. |
What the published profitability figures show
NVIDIA reported a 71.1% GAAP gross margin for fiscal 2026, evidence of unusually strong economics at the gross-profit level. Its reported operating income of $130.387 billion divided by $215.938 billion of revenue implies an operating margin of approximately 60.4%; that is a calculation from the published figures, not a separately quoted company percentage.
AMD reported a 50% gross margin for fiscal 2025 and a 54% GAAP gross margin in the second quarter of fiscal 2026. The company disclosed inventory and related charges connected to export controls; keep those items visible rather than silently replacing GAAP results with an adjusted number.
Microsoft reported fiscal 2026 operating income of $155.237 billion on $331.839 billion of revenue, implying an operating margin of approximately 46.8%. Microsoft’s diversified businesses and cloud investment cycle make the margin trend as important as the level. Free-cash-flow figures for these examples are not stated in the available comparison, so do not invent a cash-flow ranking.

Track margin direction and quality
Put each margin in a time series and annotate the reason for every major change. Expansion can reflect higher software mix, pricing, utilization, or favorable product mix; contraction can reflect new-product launch costs, data-center depreciation, lower utilization, inventory provisions, or accelerated hiring. A high margin that depends on a temporary shortage is less durable than a slightly lower margin supported by recurring contracts.
Stock compensation, investment cycles, inventory charges, and other adjustments can materially change the gap between GAAP and adjusted results. Present both when management provides them, label each column, and explain the bridge. Never use an adjusted figure to erase an economically real cost.

Valuation is a date-sensitive judgment about future cash flows, not a substitute for measuring growth or profitability. Use one share-price timestamp for every company and state whether estimates are trailing, forward next-12-month, or a specific fiscal-year consensus. The available figures do not provide a synchronized valuation table, so current multiples must be refreshed immediately before publication or an investment decision.
| Metric | Calculation | Best use | Main pitfall |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trailing P/E | Share price ÷ diluted earnings per share for the last four quarters | Compares price with profits already reported. | Backward-looking; distorted by a cyclical trough, one-time charge, or unusually high earnings. |
| Forward P/E | Share price ÷ consensus diluted EPS for a stated future period | Tests whether expected growth is reflected in the price. | Depends on the analyst set, estimate date, and definition of the forecast period. |
| EV/sales | Enterprise value ÷ revenue | Useful when earnings are low, volatile, or temporarily negative. | Ignores margins; two companies with the same multiple can have very different economics. |
| EV/EBIT | Enterprise value ÷ operating income | Links the value of debt and equity to operating profit. | Not meaningful when EBIT is negative or affected by unusual accounting items. |
| Free-cash-flow yield | Free cash flow ÷ equity market value | Shows cash return implied by the current price. | Requires a consistent free-cash-flow definition and maintenance-versus-growth capital-expenditure judgment. |
Enterprise value is generally equity value plus debt and other debt-like claims minus cash and cash equivalents; state exactly which items you include. Use diluted shares, not basic shares, when converting per-share estimates to an equity value. For forward multiples, freeze the analyst consensus at the same date as the stock price so later estimate changes do not create a false comparison.
Test whether a premium is earned
A high-growth company can deserve a higher multiple, but the premium should be tested against growth durability, margin quality, reinvestment needs, and risk. Compare the multiple with a multi-year growth range rather than one exceptional quarter. A simple discipline is to calculate a base case, a slower-growth case, and a margin-compression case; then observe how much of the current price requires the optimistic outcome.

- Set the scope. List the companies, classify each business model, and decide whether the output is total-company, AI-segment, or both.
- Freeze the period. Select a common fiscal year or trailing-12-month endpoint. Record fiscal year-end dates and do not mix quarterly and annual observations in one rank.
- Collect reported revenue. Enter current revenue, prior-period revenue, absolute dollar change, year-over-year percentage, and the source period. Add segment revenue only when the company defines it.
- Calculate exposure. Divide the AI-related or data-center segment by total revenue, label the segment as a proxy when it includes non-AI products, and note any reclassification.
- Build the profitability block. Enter GAAP gross, operating, and net income; calculate margins; then add adjusted figures in parallel columns with a reconciliation note.
- Add cash generation. Enter operating cash flow, capital expenditures, and the stated free-cash-flow definition. If a value is unavailable, mark it “not stated” rather than estimating it.
- Lock the market data timestamp. Record closing share price, diluted shares, debt, cash, and the currency. Use the same timestamp and currency convention across companies.
- Calculate valuation. Produce trailing P/E, forward P/E, EV/sales, EV/EBIT, and free-cash-flow yield. Label every denominator by period and consensus date.
- Stress-test assumptions. Model slower revenue growth, lower margins, higher capital spending, and a delayed AI-demand payoff. Identify which assumption changes the valuation most.
- Write the conclusion by investor objective. Distinguish the strongest current operating results from the most attractive risk-adjusted valuation; they may be different companies.
What business and execution risks can invalidate the comparison?
Customer concentration and hyperscaler spending
AI infrastructure demand can be concentrated among a small number of large cloud customers. Examine customer concentration disclosures, commitments, payment terms, and whether a few buyers account for a disproportionate share of sales. A platform’s capital-expenditure cycle can accelerate suppliers’ revenue and then create a sharp pause if utilization or return-on-investment expectations change.
Supply constraints and manufacturing dependence
Check access to advanced manufacturing capacity, high-bandwidth memory, packaging, networking components, and system integration. A strong order book is less valuable if the company cannot obtain constrained inputs or if a supplier disruption delays delivery. Conversely, excess inventory can pressure prices and margins when demand normalizes.
Export controls and geographic exposure
Export restrictions can limit addressable markets, require product redesigns, or create inventory charges. AMD’s disclosed export-control-related inventory and related charges demonstrate why a margin comparison must include unusual items. Review the affected products, destinations, timing, and whether management expects a recurring impact.
Capital intensity and depreciation
Cloud and platform businesses may commit enormous sums to data centers, networking, and energy before revenue is recognized. Rising depreciation and power costs can compress operating margins even while revenue grows. Include capital expenditure, lease commitments, and infrastructure utilization in the durability assessment.
Demand durability and competitive response
Separate demand for training, inference, software subscriptions, and replacement cycles. Product launches can pull demand forward; new competitors or open-source software can reduce pricing power. NVIDIA’s fiscal 2026 filing attributes growth to accelerated computing and AI, while CEO Jensen Huang said, “Computing demand is growing exponentially — the agentic AI inflection point has arrived.” Treat that statement as management’s view and test it against orders, customer budgets, utilization, and realized cash flow.
How should you interpret NVIDIA, Microsoft, and AMD in this framework?
NVIDIA: exceptional current economics, high expectations to test
NVIDIA combines the fastest reported total-company growth in the cited set with a data-center business that is closely linked to accelerated computing and AI. Its very high GAAP gross margin and calculated operating margin indicate substantial current pricing power. The key analytical question is not whether the latest result is strong; it is how long product leadership, supply availability, customer returns, and spending growth can support the premium valuation.
Best Value
Microsoft: diversified scale with AI contribution embedded in cloud
Microsoft has the largest total revenue in the comparison and a broad cloud business growing faster than the company overall. That diversification can make cash generation and earnings less dependent on one accelerator cycle, but it also means Microsoft Cloud is not an AI-only measure. Separate AI monetization, cloud infrastructure growth, software pricing, and data-center investment before attributing the whole segment to AI.
AMD: smaller base, improving data-center momentum, and accounting items to watch
AMD’s annual growth is stronger than Microsoft’s on the cited periods, and its quarterly result shows acceleration. Because the annual and quarterly figures cover different windows, use a synchronized trailing-12-month model before ranking it. Track gross-margin progression, export-control effects, product adoption, and the company’s ability to convert data-center demand into sustainable cash flow.

- Ranking mismatched periods: comparing a quarterly surge with another company’s full-year result.
- Confusing segment and company revenue: treating Microsoft Cloud as equivalent to an AI-only segment or treating all of a chip designer’s sales as AI.
- Mixing GAAP and adjusted margins: hiding stock compensation, inventory charges, or investment costs in one company but not another.
- Using stale multiples: quoting a P/E or EV/sales ratio without the share-price date, diluted-share count, debt, cash, and denominator period.
- Ignoring the denominator: using a high forward-growth estimate without checking the analyst-consensus date and revision history.
- Looking only at gross margin: overlooking research spending, depreciation, capital intensity, taxes, and free cash flow.
- Assuming management guidance is a fact: treating an outlook or executive statement as proof of future demand.
- Forgetting currency and fiscal calendars: comparing reported percentages without checking exchange rates, year-end dates, or restated segments.
How can you turn the analysis into an investment decision?
Use a scorecard only after the raw figures are normalized. One transparent approach is to assign separate scores for revenue durability, margin level, margin trend, free-cash-flow conversion, valuation, and execution risk. Keep the weights visible; changing the weights should change the conclusion rather than being hidden inside a single “AI score.”
For a growth-oriented investor, revenue durability and reinvestment returns may receive more weight. For a cash-income or lower-volatility investor, free-cash-flow yield, balance-sheet strength, and downside valuation may matter more. Do not let a high growth score cancel an unexamined valuation premium: write down the growth and margin assumptions required for the current price to work.
Finally, maintain a dated record of every input. When a company reports a new quarter, update the period, margins, cash flow, diluted shares, consensus estimates, and price together. A comparison that cannot be refreshed quickly is not a repeatable decision tool.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I compare AI stocks by revenue growth or earnings growth?
Use both, but start with revenue growth to establish demand and then test whether earnings and cash flow keep pace. Earnings can rise temporarily through cost controls or accounting effects, while revenue can grow without shareholder value if margins and capital spending deteriorate.
How often should AI-stock valuation multiples be updated?
Update them whenever the share price moves materially, a company reports results, or analyst estimates change. For a published comparison, use one dated market close and identify the estimate snapshot so readers can reproduce the calculation.
What if a company does not disclose AI revenue separately?
Use the closest disclosed segment only as a labeled proxy and describe what else it contains. Do not create an AI percentage from assumptions about product usage; lack of disclosure is itself a comparability limitation.
Can a lower-margin AI company still be the better investment?
Yes, if its growth runway, reinvestment returns, balance sheet, and valuation compensate for the lower margin. The decision should be based on expected cash flows under several scenarios, not on gross margin alone.
