The cheapest published token rate is not necessarily the cheapest way to finish your work. Compare AI models by the total cost of an acceptable completed task: measure the input, cached input, output and reasoning tokens actually used, add cache writes and separately billed tools or modalities, then account for retries, latency, quality and reliability. A model with a low price per million tokens can cost more if it consumes a larger context, generates longer reasoning, misses your quality bar or needs repeated attempts.
This guide gives you a repeatable method for making that comparison with your own workload. It also shows how caching, batch processing, service tiers, region and contract terms can change the bill, and how to report results without claiming a universal cheapest model.

It means comparing the money required to produce one result that your application can actually use, rather than comparing only the input or output rate on a pricing page. Define an acceptable completion first, measure every billable component for representative tasks, and divide the total by the number of completions that meet your quality criteria.
A useful working equation is:
task cost = uncached input units × input rate + cached input units × cached-input rate + output/reasoning units × output rate + cache writes + separately billed tools/modalities

Apply the provider’s current billing rules and keep each category separate until the end. Then report cost per acceptable completion beside quality, latency and reliability. This prevents a low token rate from hiding extra context, hidden reasoning usage, tool calls or failed attempts.

What counts as an acceptable completion?
Write the pass criteria before you compare models. For a support reply, that might mean correct policy application, required citations and no prohibited claims. For extraction, it could mean valid JSON with every required field and an error rate below your operational limit. A completion that is cheap but fails these checks is not a completed task; it is a failure, a retry or a manual-review case.
Why is the cheapest model not always the cheapest to use?
Token prices describe the unit cost, not the number of units or attempts needed. Models can differ in how much context they consume, how much visible output they produce, how many internal reasoning tokens they use, and how often they need a retry to pass your checks.
Token volume can outweigh the rate
Token counts are not word counts. Tokenization varies by model, encoding and language. JSON punctuation, code, tables, long identifiers, images, files and tool definitions can all change the input count. A prompt that appears to contain the same words may therefore cost different amounts on different models.
Reasoning usage can be billable even when you cannot see it
For reasoning models, internal reasoning tokens can count as output usage. The visible answer may be short while the billable output is much larger. Inspect the usage object returned by the API instead of estimating output from the characters or words shown to a user.

Quality failures create a second bill
If a result misses a schema, policy rule or factual threshold, your system may call the model again, invoke a repair prompt or send the task to a human. Count those attempts against the task that eventually succeeds. The relevant comparison is the expected cost of an acceptable result, not the cost of the first request.

Which charges belong in a model-cost comparison?
Build a common ledger for every provider and model. Pricing pages commonly separate more than one rate, and the categories do not always have identical names.
| Cost component | What to record | Why it changes the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Uncached input | Tokens sent without a cache hit | Long system prompts, retrieved documents and tool definitions can dominate short requests. |
| Cached input | Tokens served from an eligible prompt cache | The hit rate can be lower than standard input, but only after the prompt is written and reused under the provider’s cache rules. |
| Output and reasoning | Visible output plus any billable internal reasoning usage | Long answers, verbose JSON and difficult reasoning can increase the bill even when the displayed response looks brief. |
| Cache writes | Tokens written to a cache and the cache duration | A write charge can erase savings when a prefix is rarely reused. |
| Tools and modalities | Search, code execution, images, audio, files or other separately priced features | These charges may sit outside the model’s token line items and can vary by request. |
| Retries and failed calls | Every attempt, including validation repairs and timeouts that are billed | A lower first-pass rate can become more expensive after operational failures. |
OpenAI pricing documentation lists input, output, cached-input and cache-write prices, along with separate rates for some tools and modalities. Anthropic’s live pricing documentation lists model token prices, prompt-cache write and hit prices, and batch processing. Exact models, options and rates change, so capture the page date and verify the current terms for your account.
How do you measure the real token mix?
Use the target model’s tokenizer or request-counting facility where available, then record the usage returned after each call. Do not convert words to tokens with a fixed multiplier and treat the result as a bill.
Recommended Free Tools
- Freeze the request shape. Keep the system instruction, developer message, retrieved context, tool definitions, files, images and output schema identical when comparing models. Record the model and version, because a model alias can change over time.
- Count before sending. Use the provider’s tokenizer or counting endpoint to estimate input size, including structured messages and tool declarations. Mark which prefix is intended for caching.
- Capture the response usage. Store uncached input, cached input, output and reasoning fields separately. If a provider reports a combined field, document how it maps to your common ledger.
- Record extra services. Log image, audio, search, code-execution, file-processing or other tool charges in their own columns instead of folding them into an invented token rate.
- Log the outcome. Mark pass, retry, timeout, refusal, invalid format and human-review outcomes. Save latency for the complete attempt and for the successful completion.
- Aggregate by task. Add all billed attempts needed to reach an acceptable result, then divide by the number of acceptable completions.
Why request structure matters
Two requests with the same visible prompt can have different bills when one includes a large tool schema, a file, an image or a long conversation history. Include those elements in the measured input; omitting them produces an estimate that will not match production.
How do cached tokens and batch pricing change the bill?
Caching and batch processing can lower unit charges, but only when your workload qualifies and the operational trade-offs fit. Treat each as a separate scenario in your spreadsheet rather than applying a blanket discount.
Prompt caching
Compare the cache-write price, cache-hit price, cache lifetime and expected number of reads. A cache is useful when a stable prefix is reused often enough to repay its write charge before it expires. Anthropic states that, for most listed cases, a cache hit costs 10% of standard input. Its documentation gives a break-even illustration in which caching pays off after one read for a five-minute write or after two reads for a one-hour write under the documented multipliers. Those figures are not universal: model-specific exceptions, minimum cacheable prefixes and other modifiers can change the result.
Measure the actual hit ratio. A prompt that changes slightly on every request may miss the cache, while a shared system prompt or policy block may be highly reusable. Keep cache writes and hits in separate columns so a low hit price does not conceal frequent rewrites.

Batch processing
Batch APIs are intended for work that can complete asynchronously. Anthropic documents a 50% discount on input and output tokens for Batch API usage under its stated conditions. OpenAI presents Batch as a distinct pricing tier rather than a universal discount on every request. Confirm that the model, endpoint, tools and retention requirements qualify, and make sure your application can tolerate batch completion times and different failure handling.
Service tiers and regional modifiers
Faster or priority service can carry different rates, while regional processing or regulated-environment options can add an uplift for eligible models. Run separate calculations for standard, batch and faster tiers instead of averaging them into one number. If a job can use batch overnight but must use a faster tier during a live interaction, report those as different workloads.
Which price-scope details must appear beside every figure?
A number without scope is not a reproducible comparison. Capture the following fields whenever you copy a rate into a worksheet.
| Scope field | What to specify |
|---|---|
| Date checked | The calendar date the live price page or contract was reviewed. |
| Currency and unit | For example, USD per one million tokens, or a separate per-call or per-image unit. |
| Model and version | The exact model identifier, context range and any alias or snapshot name. |
| Usage category | Input, cached input, cache write, output/reasoning, tool or modality. |
| Processing mode | Standard, batch, faster or priority service. |
| Geography | Global, US-only or another regional-processing scope. |
| Contract | Public list price, negotiated rate, enterprise agreement or eligibility restriction. |
| Other conditions | Minimum cache size, retention period, quotas, context limits and feature exclusions. |
Anthropic’s dated list-price schedule effective May 27, 2026, for example, distinguishes global and US-only inference rows and states prices in US dollars per one million tokens unless otherwise noted. That schedule is a dated list-price reference, not a promise of a negotiated customer rate. OpenAI’s documentation notes regional-processing and FedRAMP uplifts for eligible models and describes service-tier changes. Treat these details as volatile product and contract terms, not permanent model attributes.

Use one row per task attempt and one summary row per model. Keep the arithmetic auditable.
- Multiply each token category by its applicable rate. Use uncached input, cached input and output/reasoning rates separately.
- Add cache writes. Allocate a write to the tasks that caused it, or state the amortization rule you use for a shared prefix.
- Add tools and modalities. Include separately billed searches, images, audio, files or code execution.
- Add retries and failed attempts. Do not discard a billed timeout or a validation repair simply because the final answer passed.
- Divide by acceptable completions. If 90 requests produce 75 passes, divide total billed spend by 75, not by 90.
For an illustrative worksheet, a task might contain 8,000 uncached input tokens, 4,000 cached tokens, 1,200 visible output tokens and 2,000 reasoning tokens. Enter the provider’s current rates for those four categories, add any cache write and tool charges, and include every retry. The token quantities are an example of how to structure the row, not a provider benchmark or a prediction of usage.
How OpenAI’s enterprise formula fits
OpenAI’s enterprise token-based rate card expresses the core calculation as input tokens at the input rate plus cached-input tokens at the cached-input rate plus output tokens at the output rate. That formula applies to eligible token-based Enterprise agreements; it should not be presented as the universal price for every customer or endpoint. Add tools, modalities, retries and other applicable terms separately.

How do you design a fair model comparison?
Use the same task definition and success test for every candidate, then sample the workload broadly enough to expose ordinary and difficult cases.
1. Define the workload
Specify the production task, input-size distribution, languages, files, tools, output format, latency target and quality threshold. A model selected for short classification calls should not be judged with a long-document prompt that it will never receive in practice.
2. Build a representative sample
Include common cases and difficult cases that reflect real traffic. Avoid choosing one prompt that makes a preferred model look good. Preserve the same prompt, context, tool setup and output constraints across models, changing only what is required by an API’s documented interface.
3. Score quality before looking at price
Use automated validators where possible and a defined human rubric for ambiguous cases. Record pass, partial pass, fail and escalation. If one model’s output requires a different parser or safety review, include that operational work in the acceptance criteria rather than hiding it outside the cost calculation.
4. Measure latency and reliability
Record time to first token, total completion time, timeout rate, rate-limit errors, transient failures and retry count. Report the distribution, such as median and high-percentile latency, when your service-level objective depends on tail behavior. The pricing pages establish billing mechanics; they do not provide independent cross-provider quality, latency or reliability results.

6. Present the trade-off

Which metrics belong in the final comparison table?
A compact decision table should make both the bill and the operational result visible.
| Metric | Recommended definition | Decision question |
|---|---|---|
| Total billed cost per task | All attempts and billable features for one task | What does this workload actually spend? |
| Cost per acceptable completion | Total spend divided by passed tasks | How much does a usable result cost? |
| Token mix | Uncached input, cached input, output and reasoning units | Which category drives the bill? |
| Cache economics | Write count, hit ratio, lifetime and savings | Is reuse paying for the cache? |
| Batch or tier eligibility | Share of traffic that can use each mode | Can lower rates apply without violating timing needs? |
| Quality | Pass rate against the predefined acceptance test | Does the result meet the business requirement? |
| Latency | Time to first token and completion time | Does it meet the user or service-level target? |
| Reliability | Timeouts, errors, retries and manual escalations | How much operational work surrounds each call? |
| Scope | Date, region, currency, model version and contract | Can another reader reproduce the calculation? |
What common mistakes make AI cost comparisons misleading?
- Comparing only input rates. Fix this by recording output, reasoning, cache and tool charges separately.
- Converting words to tokens with one universal multiplier. Use the target model’s tokenizer and the actual usage response.
- Ignoring hidden prompt material. Count system messages, conversation history, tool schemas, files and images.
- Treating a visible short answer as a low-output call. Check for billable reasoning tokens.
- Applying a batch discount to interactive traffic. Use it only for qualifying asynchronous jobs.
- Assuming every cache read is a hit. Measure hit ratio and include write cost and expiration.
- Mixing list and negotiated prices. Label public, enterprise and regional terms separately.
- Removing failed calls from the denominator. Charge them to the task that required the attempt.
- Using one cherry-picked prompt. Sample normal and difficult cases from the intended workload.
- Declaring a cross-provider winner from price sheets. Provider pages describe billing; they do not establish universal quality, latency or reliability rankings.
- Leaving the date off a volatile figure. Record when the rate was checked and set a review trigger.
When should you recheck the comparison?
Recheck prices and model availability immediately before publication and whenever the workload or vendor terms change. Set a scheduled review for production budgets, but also trigger an early review when a model version changes, a provider adds or removes a cache or batch option, your region or contract changes, token usage shifts, or retry rates rise.
Keep the original assumptions with each result: model identifier, date, currency, region, service tier, cache lifetime, batch eligibility, context distribution, quality rubric and sample composition. That record lets you distinguish a real efficiency change from a changed price sheet or a different workload.
How should the result be reported to decision-makers?
Lead with the cost per acceptable completion for the target workload, then show the inputs that produced it. A clear report includes the token mix, cache and batch assumptions, quality pass rate, latency distribution, reliability and scope labels. Include a sensitivity view for higher output length, lower cache reuse or more retries when those variables could materially change the decision.
Use language such as “lowest measured cost for this workload under these assumptions” rather than “cheapest model.” A different application, region, contract, context length or quality bar can reverse the result. The purpose of the comparison is a defensible deployment choice, not a permanent ranking.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I update an AI model cost worksheet?
Update it whenever the provider changes a model identifier, rate card, cache rule, batch policy, regional option or service tier. For a live budget, also review it after your traffic mix, average context size or retry rate changes materially; those usage changes can move total cost even when published rates stay fixed.
How should shared cache writes be allocated across tasks?
Choose one rule and state it: charge the full write to the first task, amortize it across the expected reads during the cache lifetime, or report write cost as a separate shared overhead. Do not alternate methods between models, because that makes cache-heavy and cache-light candidates incomparable.
What if two providers expose different usage fields?
Map each response into a common schema with uncached input, cached input, output, reasoning, tools, retries and outcome. Preserve the original provider fields alongside the mapped values so an audit can identify any category that was combined or unavailable.
Should failed or timed-out requests count if no answer was returned?
Yes, when the provider billed the request. Assign that spend to the task attempt, record the failure reason and include any later retry needed for an acceptable completion. Excluding billed failures understates the cost of operating the system.
Can a list-price comparison predict my exact monthly bill?
No. A monthly forecast also depends on traffic volume, context and output distributions, cache reuse, tool mix, retries, quotas, contract terms and regional routing. Use measured per-task distributions and apply a stated contingency rather than multiplying one headline rate by an average word count.
