Compare an AI ETF with a broad-market index fund by looking past the fund names: identify each benchmark and its rules, inspect the holdings and overlap, calculate the full cost of owning it, and decide what job it would do in your portfolio. A broad-market fund is generally designed for wider market exposure; an AI ETF is a narrower thematic investment whose actual exposure depends on how its index or strategy defines artificial intelligence. Neither label tells you by itself how diversified, inexpensive, liquid, or suitable a fund is.
What is the difference between an AI ETF and a broad-market index fund?
An AI ETF seeks exposure to companies selected under an artificial-intelligence-related index or strategy. A broad-market index fund seeks to track a wider market benchmark, such as the S&P 500, the Russell 2000, or the Wilshire 5000 Total Market Index. The first is organized around a theme; the second around a broad market segment or market universe. Both can still be affected by market movements, fund expenses, trading costs, and the way their indexes are constructed.

One index may emphasize companies that develop AI technology, while another may include companies involved in related areas such as big data. The fund’s name is a starting point, not a complete description of what it owns. Broad-market funds are not all identical either: their index universes and weighting methods differ.
An ETF is a fund traded on an exchange; “index fund” describes an investment approach. Those labels are not opposites. An ETF can be an index fund, and a broad-market index strategy can be offered in different fund structures. For a fair comparison, identify the exact fund, share class where applicable, and benchmark rather than comparing “AI” with “the market” in the abstract.

Examples show why the index name matters
First Trust’s summary prospectus for the First Trust Bloomberg Artificial Intelligence ETF (FAI), dated February 2, 2026, says the fund seeks results that correspond generally to the Bloomberg Artificial Intelligence Index before fees and expenses. Global X’s summary prospectus for the Global X Artificial Intelligence & Technology ETF (AIQ), dated April 1, 2026, describes a similar objective tied to the Indxx Artificial Intelligence & Big Data Index before fees and expenses. These statements establish different named benchmarks, not that the funds hold the same companies or provide interchangeable exposure. Check the latest prospectuses and index methodologies for current terms.
Which comparison criteria matter most?
Use the same set of questions for both funds. The benchmark tells you what the fund intends to track; holdings show what you would actually own; costs and trading conditions affect implementation; and the fund’s role determines whether its risks fit alongside your other investments.
| Comparison axis | AI ETF | Broad-market index fund |
|---|---|---|
| Objective | Tracks or pursues an AI-related index or strategy. Confirm the provider’s definition of AI and the specific index rules. | Tracks a broad index, such as the S&P 500, Russell 2000, or Wilshire 5000 Total Market Index; confirm which one and how it is built. |
| Diversification | May be concentrated in a theme, sector, country, or a small number of large holdings. Inspect actual positions and overlap with your other funds. | Generally offers broader exposure, but a market-cap-weighted index can still be dominated by its largest companies. |
| Costs | Compare operating expenses, turnover, spreads, any applicable account or brokerage charges, premium or discount to net asset value (NAV), and tracking difference. | Check the same costs for the specific fund. An index approach does not eliminate expenses or trading frictions. |
| Potential portfolio role | Often considered as a narrower thematic tilt or satellite holding; that is a planning framework, not a rule for every investor. | May be used for core market exposure, depending on the benchmark and an investor’s objectives. |
| Risks and behavior | Theme definitions, index construction, concentration, and performance history can lead to behavior unlike the broad market. | Still exposed to market risk and can lag its index because of expenses, trading costs, and tracking error. |
There is no universal expense ratio, concentration level, tracking-error figure, or allocation percentage that makes one category superior. Compare like with like using current fund-specific information, not a category-wide assumption or an invented cutoff.
How do I compare the funds step by step?
Work from the investment objective toward the trading decision. Keep a record of the date of each document or data snapshot: objectives, holdings, fees, and trading conditions can change, so figures from different dates may not describe a comparable pair of funds.
- Write down the exact fund and benchmark. Record the fund’s full name, ticker, share class if relevant, benchmark name, index provider, and the date of the documents you are using. Do not assume that two products with “AI” in their names use the same index.
- Read the objective and index methodology. Find the fund’s stated investment objective and determine whether it seeks to track an index or pursue a strategy. Review the index’s eligible universe, inclusion criteria, weighting method, and rebalancing and reconstitution schedule. Investor.gov notes that index funds may use market-cap weighting, sampling, or other methods, so the word “index” does not mean every fund holds every index constituent in equal proportions.
- Inspect holdings and concentration. Use current holdings to compare the largest positions, top-ten weight, number of holdings, and sector and country mix. A company can be prominent in more than one fund, and an index can give a security a larger weight than its label suggests. Look through your existing investments too: adding a thematic fund may increase exposure you already have through a broad-market holding.
- Compare the cost of ownership, not just the stated fee. Record the expense ratio, then examine turnover, bid-ask spread, any commission or account fee that applies to you, and whether shares have traded at a premium or discount to NAV. Consider tracking difference as well: it reflects how the fund’s returns have diverged from its benchmark over a period, after the effects of fund implementation. The SEC advises investors to review NAV, median bid-ask spread, and historical premiums and discounts. Investor.gov emphasizes that fees and expenses reduce investment returns.
- Check liquidity and execution conditions. ETFs trade on exchanges at market prices, which may differ from NAV. Review typical trading volume and the spread, and read the prospectus description of the fund’s creation and redemption structure. Ask whether the observed trading conditions are workable for the size and frequency of the trades you expect to make; a quoted expense ratio alone does not answer that question.
- Compare risk and history in context. Examine the available volatility and drawdown history for each fund and the relevant benchmark, while keeping the measurement period in view. A thematic fund may have a shorter record or behave differently from the market because of its theme and construction. Past performance can describe what happened over a stated period, but it is not a forecast of future returns.
- Verify the primary documents before acting. Review the summary prospectus and full prospectus, shareholder report, current holdings, and relevant SEC EDGAR filings. Confirm that the objective, risks, fees, and index information are from the latest available documents rather than relying on a summary, screener, or product label alone.
How should I read an AI index methodology?
The methodology is the rulebook behind the theme. It can explain which companies qualify, what evidence the index provider uses to classify them, how eligible companies are weighted, and when the index is reviewed. Those rules determine whether the portfolio favors a small set of perceived AI leaders or a wider group of companies with varied connections to the theme.
Check eligibility and the meaning of “AI”
Look for the stated universe and the criteria for inclusion. Ask whether the methodology distinguishes developers of AI systems from users, suppliers, or companies associated with related data technologies. The answer matters because companies can participate in a technology ecosystem in different ways, and a thematic label does not guarantee that every holding is a pure-play AI business.

Check how weights are assigned
Find out whether the index uses market capitalization, a modified weighting method, or another approach. Weighting changes the influence of each holding on fund performance. Even a fund with many securities can be economically concentrated if a few positions account for a substantial share of assets. Conversely, a list of holdings alone does not reveal how much each position matters.
Check how often the rules can change holdings
Review the schedule for rebalancing and reconstitution and the conditions that can trigger index changes. Frequent turnover can affect trading activity and costs, while less frequent changes can leave the portfolio reflecting an older set of eligible companies for longer. The methodology and fund documents, rather than the index name, are the places to verify these mechanics.
How do I measure diversification and overlap?
Count and compare exposure, not just the number of line items. A fund with many holdings can still be concentrated in its largest positions or in one sector, while two funds with different names can hold many of the same companies.
- Top holdings: Compare the largest positions and the combined weight of the top ten. This shows whether a small group of companies could have outsized influence.
- Sector and country mix: Review the breakdowns reported by each fund. A thematic fund can be heavily tilted toward a particular sector or geography even if it holds companies across several categories.
- Overlap with your portfolio: Compare the AI ETF’s holdings with the broad-market fund and other funds you own. Overlap may be especially important when a broad index already includes prominent technology companies.
- Concentration within the benchmark: Check whether the benchmark is capitalization-weighted or uses another weighting rule. A broad index’s largest constituents may make its exposure less evenly distributed than the phrase “broad market” suggests.
- Changes over time: Use holdings with their as-of dates and compare snapshots consistently. Index rebalances and fund activity can make older holdings lists a poor guide to current exposure.
Investor.gov cautions that different indexes can hold the same securities or assign some securities more weight than an investor expects. That is why a holdings review should include both individual positions and the distribution of exposure across the portfolio.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat costs should I compare beyond the expense ratio?
The expense ratio is only one part of implementation cost. It is useful for comparing ongoing fund operating expenses, but it does not tell you the full cost of buying, holding, and selling ETF shares or how closely the fund has tracked its benchmark.
Operating expenses and turnover
Record the expense ratio shown in the current fund documents and note the document date. Then review turnover and the fund’s explanation of trading costs. A thematic strategy may involve more frequent portfolio changes than a broad index, but the actual turnover is fund-specific; do not infer it from the theme alone.

Spread, market price, and NAV
The bid-ask spread is the gap between the price at which buyers are bidding and sellers are asking. A wider spread can make a trade more expensive to execute. ETF market prices may also be above or below NAV, so examine both current and historical premium/discount information rather than assuming the exchange price always matches the value of the underlying holdings.
Tracking difference and tracking error
Tracking difference describes the gap between fund and benchmark returns over a specified period. Tracking error describes how variable those differences have been over time. Both depend on the period measured and the fund’s method of operating; they are not interchangeable with the expense ratio. Compare the same period and benchmark basis when the information is available, and remember that past tracking results do not guarantee future results.

Check whether your brokerage or account imposes a commission or other charge for the transaction. Such charges depend on the account and trading arrangement, so they cannot be accurately folded into a universal comparison of AI ETFs with broad-market funds.
How do liquidity and ETF trading affect the comparison?
An ETF’s exchange listing makes it tradable during market hours, but that does not mean every ETF trades equally efficiently. Volume, bid-ask spread, premiums or discounts to NAV, and the mechanics described in the prospectus all help explain the conditions under which an investor may transact.
Review the median bid-ask spread and historical premium/discount information identified by the SEC as useful ETF data. Also look at trading volume, but do not treat volume alone as a complete measure of liquidity: the underlying holdings and the fund’s creation and redemption process are part of the picture. The prospectus explains the relevant structure for the specific fund.
For someone making a long-term holding decision, a one-day quote is not the whole analysis; it is still useful to know what the available trading data show and whether the fund has traded far from NAV. For someone trading more frequently, execution conditions can matter more often. The right comparison depends on intended use, and neither a low stated fee nor an attractive theme resolves liquidity questions.

What risks can an AI ETF add to a portfolio?
An AI ETF adds exposure shaped by a theme and the index methodology, rather than simply broad exposure to the market. That can mean greater concentration in particular companies, sectors, or countries, as well as performance that differs from a broad-market fund. The theme’s future prospects do not remove the risk that the fund’s holdings, prices, or index rules may disappoint.
Non-traditional index funds can be complex, less correlated with the market, or limited in performance history. For a comparison, look at volatility and drawdowns over consistent periods, then ask how those outcomes relate to the role the fund would have in your portfolio. Do not use past performance as a prediction: Investor.gov says it is less important than many investors assume because it does not predict future returns.
A broad-market index fund is not risk-free or guaranteed to match its index exactly. It remains exposed to market losses, and fees, trading costs, and tracking error can cause it to underperform its benchmark. Investor.gov notes that ETFs can lose some or all of the money invested. The relevant decision is not whether one category has risk and the other does not, but which risks and exposures you are prepared to accept.
How do I decide what role each fund would play?
Start with the portfolio exposure you want, not with a prediction that AI will outperform. A broad-market fund may be considered for core exposure because it represents a wider market basket; an AI ETF may be considered as a narrower thematic tilt. These are planning descriptions, not universal allocation rules or recommendations for a particular investor.
Recommended Free Tools
Before adding an AI ETF, examine how it changes the portfolio’s combined holdings. If its largest positions already appear in a broad-market fund, the new purchase may increase the weight of those companies rather than add as much diversification as the fund name suggests. Then consider whether the resulting concentration, volatility, and possible divergence from the market fit your goals and time horizon.
No research cited here establishes a single suitable allocation, risk tolerance, or time horizon for every investor. Those depend on personal circumstances. Treat the comparison as educational, and use the fund documents and your own financial plan rather than a theme’s popularity to make a decision.

Which documents should I check before investing?
Use primary documents to verify both the fund’s promises and its current implementation. Product pages and summaries can help locate information, but the prospectus, shareholder report, holdings, and regulatory filings give you the fund-specific details needed to confirm what the comparison means.
- Summary prospectus: Review the objective, fees, principal risks, and the named index or strategy.
- Full prospectus: Check the more complete description of the strategy, index relationship, trading structure, and risks.
- Index methodology: Verify eligibility, weighting, rebalancing, and reconstitution rules with the index provider’s current methodology.
- Shareholder report: Review reported portfolio information and fund operations for the covered period.
- Current holdings: Use a dated holdings list to assess concentration, sector and country exposure, and overlap.
- SEC EDGAR filings and ETF data: Confirm filings and review NAV, median bid-ask spread, and historical premium/discount information.
The cited FAI summary prospectus is dated February 2, 2026, and the cited AIQ summary prospectus is dated April 1, 2026. Those dates identify the documents, not a guarantee that their terms remain the latest available. Verify current documents and holdings when making a comparison.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do AI ETFs hold only companies that build AI systems?
Not necessarily. A fund follows its index or strategy’s eligibility rules, which may include companies involved in related technology areas as well as direct developers; the index methodology and current holdings show how the provider applies its definition.
Does a broad-market index fund own every publicly traded company?
No. A fund tracks its specified benchmark, and that benchmark may cover a defined segment or universe rather than every listed company. Check whether it follows an index such as the S&P 500, Russell 2000, or Wilshire 5000 Total Market Index before treating it as total-market exposure.
Can two funds with the same AI label have different investments?
Yes. Fund labels do not standardize eligibility, weighting, or rebalance rules. Compare the named benchmark and dated holdings of each specific fund rather than assuming that the category name defines a common portfolio.
Where can I find an ETF’s official filings?
Use the fund provider’s prospectus and shareholder-report materials, then verify regulatory filings through SEC EDGAR. Investor.gov’s ETF resources also identify characteristics such as NAV, bid-ask spread, and historical premiums or discounts that are useful for evaluating an ETF.
