There is no single “most profitable AI company” until you define what counts as AI revenue, which fiscal period you are using, and whether you are comparing a product maker with a cloud, advertising, retail, or chip business. A defensible comparison normalizes each company’s fiscal year and currency, separates business models into peer groups, and uses a margin stack: gross margin, consolidated operating margin, and AI-relevant segment profit. It then sets capital expenditure, depreciation, energy, servers, networking, and data-center costs beside revenue growth and cash generation. Using that method, NVIDIA’s 75.0% fiscal-2025 gross margin is not directly comparable with Amazon’s 11.2% company-wide operating margin or Microsoft Cloud’s 69% gross margin. The figures describe different economic layers, not a league table of identical businesses.
How do you compare AI companies fairly?
Start with a normalization worksheet rather than a ranking. For every company, record the reporting period, currency, accounting basis, business scope, and the exact denominator behind each margin. Microsoft’s fiscal year ends June 30, while Alphabet, Meta, Amazon, and NVIDIA use different fiscal calendars and definitions. A number labeled “2025” therefore does not necessarily cover the same months.

1. Normalize the period and currency
- Write the fiscal year-end date beside every figure.
- Keep the reporting currency, or convert all values using a stated average exchange rate and retain the original amount for auditability.
- Mark whether a number is consolidated, segment-level, quarterly, trailing-twelve-month, or a one-time period.
- Identify GAAP or IFRS figures and keep non-GAAP adjustments separate rather than blending them into reported profit.
Do not rank raw revenue totals before this step. A company with a March year-end and one with a December year-end may have experienced very different AI demand, component prices, and exchange rates during their reported “2025.”
2. Put companies into comparable business archetypes
AI economics differ according to where a company sits in the stack. Use separate peer groups for:

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- Cloud and software platforms: They sell compute, storage, applications, and model access, while funding large data-center fleets.
- Advertising platforms: AI may improve ranking, targeting, recommendations, and creative tools; the company may not disclose a separate AI revenue line.
- Semiconductor suppliers: They sell chips, systems, or networking equipment to the infrastructure builders and can show product gross margins that do not include customers’ operating costs.
- Private model companies: Their primary product may be model access, but public financial statements and segment definitions are limited.
One company can belong to more than one discussion, but never treat its segment margin as interchangeable with another company’s consolidated margin.
3. Define what “AI revenue” means
Only call revenue “AI revenue” when the company reports an AI-specific line or clearly identifies the amount. Cloud revenue may include ordinary databases and virtual machines; advertising revenue may be improved by AI without being generated by an AI product; chip revenue may include non-AI workloads. In those cases, label the measure as total company or segment revenue and describe AI as a driver, workload, or feature—not as the entire sales figure.
Which AI company makes the most money?
Among the named public companies, the largest reported 2025 revenue belongs to Alphabet at $402.836 billion, but that is total Alphabet revenue, not AI revenue. Microsoft reported $281.724 billion and Amazon reported $128.7 billion in AWS sales alone. NVIDIA’s $130.5 billion is company revenue for fiscal 2025, while Meta reported $200.966 billion. These totals belong to different business mixes and fiscal periods, so they answer “who is largest by reported sales?” rather than “who earns the most from AI?”
| Company and period | Reported revenue | Gross measure | Operating income or margin | Capital expenditure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft, 2025 fiscal year | $281.724 billion | $193.893 billion gross profit (about 68.8% derived gross margin) | $128.528 billion operating income | Not stated in the supplied figures |
| NVIDIA, fiscal 2025 | $130.5 billion | 75.0% gross margin | $81.5 billion operating income (about 62.5% derived operating margin) | Not stated in the supplied figures |
| Meta Platforms, 2025 | $200.966 billion | Not stated | $83.276 billion operating income (about 41.4% derived margin) | $72.22 billion |
| Alphabet, 2025 | $402.836 billion | Not stated | $129.039 billion operating income; 32% operating margin | $91.4 billion |
| Amazon, 2025 | $128.7 billion AWS sales | Not stated for AWS | $45.6 billion AWS operating income; 11.2% total-company operating margin | Not stated in the supplied figures |
The table mixes consolidated and segment data intentionally to show why labeling matters. AWS sales and AWS operating income describe Amazon Web Services, whereas Amazon’s 11.2% operating margin covers retail, advertising, logistics, and other activities. Comparing the AWS profit number with NVIDIA’s product gross margin would confuse a cloud segment with a chip supplier.
What the headline totals do—and do not—tell you
Alphabet’s $402.836 billion includes search, advertising, cloud, subscriptions, devices, and other activities. Meta’s $200.966 billion is principally an advertising-platform total. Microsoft’s $281.724 billion spans productivity software, cloud, gaming, and more. None should be presented as AI sales unless management reports that subset.
NVIDIA’s $130.5 billion reflects sales of accelerated-computing products and related systems, but its customers bear the continuing cost of data centers, electricity, staffing, and depreciation. A high supplier gross margin can coexist with much lower downstream returns for a model provider or cloud customer.

| Layer | Formula | What it captures | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gross margin | (revenue − cost of revenue) ÷ revenue |
Pricing power after direct production, hosting, or fulfillment costs | May exclude substantial research, sales, data-center overhead, or corporate costs |
| Consolidated operating margin | operating income ÷ total company revenue |
Profit after research, sales, administration, and other operating expenses | Can hide which segment funds or consumes AI investment |
| Segment operating margin | segment operating income ÷ segment revenue |
Economics of a unit such as Azure/Intelligent Cloud or AWS | Definitions, allocations, and disclosure vary by company |
Microsoft: separate company profit from cloud economics
Microsoft reported $281.724 billion of 2025 revenue, $193.893 billion of gross profit, and $128.528 billion of operating income. Its Microsoft Cloud gross margin was 69%. Microsoft said its cloud gross-margin percentage decreased to 69% because of scaling AI infrastructure, partly offset by Azure efficiency gains. The statement is important because revenue can grow while the cost of serving AI workloads temporarily rises faster.
The 69% Microsoft Cloud figure is a segment-level gross margin, not Microsoft’s consolidated operating margin. It should be compared with another cloud or software gross margin only after checking that cost allocations and reporting definitions are similar.
NVIDIA: a supplier’s gross margin is not a customer’s operating margin
NVIDIA reported $130.5 billion of fiscal-2025 revenue, a 75.0% gross margin, and $81.5 billion of operating income. Dividing the reported operating income by revenue gives an approximately 62.5% operating margin, a derived calculation rather than a separately quoted percentage.
Those margins describe NVIDIA’s product and system sales. They do not include the full electricity, depreciation, networking, facility, and labor burden incurred by a cloud provider running those systems. Treat NVIDIA as an infrastructure-supplier peer, not as a direct margin benchmark for a model-hosting business.
Alphabet and Meta: AI may be an input to advertising
Alphabet reported $402.836 billion of 2025 revenue and $129.039 billion of operating income, equivalent to the stated 32% operating margin. Meta reported $200.966 billion of revenue and $83.276 billion of operating income, which yields an approximately 41.4% derived operating margin.
For both companies, AI improves recommendation, ad selection, content generation, and user engagement, but the reported totals are not AI-specific revenue lines. Their margins therefore show the economics of diversified advertising platforms while AI-related infrastructure and research are embedded in company-wide expenses.
Amazon: use AWS segment profit, not the retail-diluted total
Amazon reported $128.7 billion in 2025 AWS sales and $45.6 billion in AWS operating income. Its total-company operating margin was 11.2%, diluted by retail, logistics, and other operations. For cloud comparisons, the AWS figures are the relevant starting point; for an investment-level view of Amazon’s ability to fund AI, retain the consolidated margin as a separate measure.

How much does AI infrastructure cost?
Infrastructure cost is a bridge, not one line item. Build it from capital spending and recurring operating costs, then state what the company includes. Capex may cover all property and equipment rather than AI-only assets, so it cannot automatically be treated as “AI spend.”
| Cost or investment layer | What to collect | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Capital expenditure | Purchases of servers, buildings, networking, and other property and equipment | Shows the cash committed before assets generate revenue; scope may be broader than AI |
| Depreciation | Expense recognized as servers and facilities are used | Links past capex to current-period profit and reveals the cost of a growing installed base |
| Energy | Electricity and related utility costs | Rises with model training, inference volume, cooling requirements, and data-center utilization |
| Servers and accelerators | Purchase or lease costs, refresh cycles, and utilization | Determines capacity, performance, and the risk of underused equipment |
| Networking | Interconnect, bandwidth, switching, and regional transport | Large models require high-speed links; network bottlenecks can raise cost per useful computation |
| Data-center operations | Construction, rent, cooling, maintenance, security, and staff | Captures costs that a chip invoice alone misses |
| Technology-infrastructure expense | Company-defined infrastructure categories and growth rates | Provides the closest disclosed operating-cost view when detailed components are unavailable |
Alphabet and Meta illustrate capex intensity
Alphabet reported $91.4 billion of 2025 capital expenditure and warned that the costs of operating technical infrastructure—depreciation, energy, equipment, and network capacity—would increase significantly because developing and serving AI offerings requires more compute power than its historical consumer and enterprise products.
Meta reported $72.22 billion of 2025 capital expenditure and attributed cost growth mainly to data centers and technical infrastructure. Neither figure should be labeled AI-only without a company-provided allocation. They are best used as indicators of infrastructure intensity and future depreciation exposure.
Calculate capex intensity, but label the denominator
Use capex ÷ consolidated revenue to compare broad investment intensity and capex ÷ relevant segment revenue only when the capex and segment scopes genuinely match. Alphabet’s $91.4 billion divided by $402.836 billion of revenue is approximately 22.7%; Meta’s $72.22 billion divided by $200.966 billion is approximately 35.9%. These are derived company-wide ratios, not AI return-on-investment measures.

A rising ratio can mean a company is building capacity ahead of demand, replacing older equipment, or investing in non-AI assets. Pair the ratio with depreciation growth, utilization commentary, revenue growth, and operating cash flow before drawing a conclusion.
How do you connect infrastructure spending to monetization?
Compare what the company spends with the revenue, profit, and cash that the investment supports. A useful dashboard has at least eight columns:
- Revenue scale and growth: record consolidated and relevant segment revenue for the same period.
- Gross margin: capture direct cost pressure from hosting, components, energy, and delivery.
- Operating margin: show the result after research, sales, and corporate expenses.
- AI-relevant segment income: use Azure/Intelligent Cloud, AWS, or another disclosed unit where available.
- Capex: record the company’s stated scope and whether it includes all property and equipment.
- Depreciation and infrastructure-cost growth: measure the lagged earnings effect of earlier investment.
- Cash generation: compare operating cash flow and free cash flow with capex; accounting profit alone does not fund servers.
- Disclosure quality and funding dependence: grade whether the company reports audited segment data or relies on estimates, partners, and external capital.
Amazon’s AWS example shows why this bridge matters: $128.7 billion of AWS sales and $45.6 billion of AWS operating income reveal a profitable cloud unit, while the 11.2% Amazon-wide operating margin shows how other businesses change the consolidated result. The two measures answer different questions and should remain side by side.

Use a time-lag view
Servers purchased this year may not generate full revenue immediately, and depreciation begins after assets are placed in service. Compare at least three periods when possible: current capex, prior-period capex, and current depreciation. A sudden margin decline after a capacity build may reflect utilization ramp-up rather than permanently weak pricing.

Cloud contracts, capacity reservations, and customer prepayments can support a model company without proving that the model company itself is profitable. Record who owns the hardware, who pays for electricity, the contract duration, and whether the commitment is cancellable. Do not count a partner’s investment as the model provider’s revenue or cash generation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you compare private AI model companies?
OpenAI and Anthropic do not provide the same standardized public segment disclosures as listed companies. Reported contracts, funding rounds, and capacity commitments can establish scale or dependence on partners, but they are not substitutes for audited revenue, gross profit, operating income, and cash-flow statements.
For a private company, label every number with its source and date, identify whether it is management guidance, a reported contract value, an analyst estimate, or an audited result, and avoid calculating a precise margin when the cost base is unknown. A large cloud agreement may reduce a company’s infrastructure burden or increase its capacity; it does not, by itself, reveal the price paid, utilization, or net profit.
A practical disclosure score
- High: audited statements, consistent fiscal periods, gross and operating profit, cash flow, and segment definitions.
- Medium: reliable revenue disclosures but incomplete infrastructure or segment costs.
- Low: reported bookings, partnerships, or funding without verified revenue and expense detail.
Use the score to express confidence, not to penalize a company for being private. The correct conclusion may be that profitability is not established from public evidence.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat is a repeatable step-by-step comparison method?
- Define the question. Decide whether you are measuring sales scale, product economics, infrastructure returns, or the ability to fund future capacity.
- Set the period. Write each fiscal year-end and use annual figures unless a quarterly comparison is explicitly required.
- Classify the business model. Put chip suppliers, clouds, advertising platforms, software companies, and private model providers into separate peer groups.
- Collect reported values. Take revenue, cost of revenue, gross profit, operating income, segment income, capex, depreciation, and operating cash flow from annual reports or filings.
- Preserve scope labels. Mark each value as consolidated, segment-level, AI-specific, or company-wide. Use “not disclosed” rather than filling a gap with an estimate.
- Calculate derived ratios. Use consistent formulas for gross margin, operating margin, capex intensity, and cash conversion, and label every derived result.
- Build the infrastructure bridge. Separate capex from recurring energy, depreciation, networking, and data-center operating costs.
- Test monetization. Compare infrastructure growth with revenue growth, segment profit, utilization commentary, and cash generation.
- Score disclosure quality. Lower confidence when the company does not publish audited segment or cost information.
- Write a qualified conclusion. State which company leads on the selected metric and why that metric is not a universal measure of AI success.
What comparison mistakes produce misleading rankings?
- Calling all company revenue AI revenue: diversified companies rarely disclose that allocation.
- Mixing gross and operating margins: NVIDIA’s 75.0% gross margin is not equivalent to Microsoft’s operating income margin or AWS operating income.
- Mixing fiscal calendars: “2025” can cover different months and economic conditions.
- Treating capex as an AI-only cost: property and equipment may support search, storage, office operations, retail logistics, or other workloads.
- Ignoring depreciation: cash leaves the business at purchase, while profit is affected over the asset’s useful life.
- Using consolidated margins for a segment question: Amazon’s 11.2% total-company margin obscures AWS economics.
- Inferring private-company profitability from contracts: capacity commitments do not disclose cost, utilization, or net income.
- Combining GAAP and non-GAAP figures: stock compensation, amortization, and restructuring can materially change the result.
- Assuming higher capex is automatically better: excess capacity can depress returns if demand or pricing fails to keep pace.
Which metric should you use for a specific decision?
| Question | Best primary metric | Supporting checks |
|---|---|---|
| Who has the largest reported business? | Consolidated revenue on matched fiscal periods | Growth rate, currency, and business mix |
| Who has the strongest product economics? | Gross margin within the same archetype | Cost-of-revenue definition and pricing trend |
| Who turns the business into operating profit? | Consolidated operating margin | Research intensity, stock compensation, and one-time items |
| Which cloud unit is monetizing AI workloads? | Segment revenue and segment operating income | Cloud gross margin, utilization, and depreciation |
| Who is investing most aggressively? | Capex and capex-to-revenue ratio | Depreciation, cash flow, asset scope, and capacity commitments |
| Can a private model company fund expansion? | Verified cash, financing, and disclosed unit economics | Contract terms, partner dependence, and disclosure quality |
Use more than one metric before reaching a verdict. A supplier can lead on gross margin, a cloud can lead on recurring segment profit, and an advertising platform can fund AI through a large established cash engine. Those are different forms of economic strength.
What does a defensible conclusion look like?
A sound conclusion names the metric, period, and scope in the same sentence. For example: “Alphabet had the largest reported 2025 revenue among these companies, at $402.836 billion, while NVIDIA reported the highest stated gross margin, 75.0%, for fiscal 2025; the figures are not a direct AI-profitability ranking because Alphabet is a diversified advertising and cloud company and NVIDIA is an infrastructure supplier.”
Best Value
For infrastructure, say what is known and what is not: Alphabet reported $91.4 billion of 2025 capex and Meta $72.22 billion, but the disclosed totals are not AI-only allocations. For cloud monetization, use AWS’s $128.7 billion sales and $45.6 billion operating income rather than Amazon’s 11.2% consolidated operating margin alone. This wording preserves the evidence without pretending that one ratio captures the entire AI value chain.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I compare AI companies using revenue per employee?
Only as a secondary productivity indicator. Employee counts, contractors, acquisitions, and outsourced data-center operations are reported differently, so revenue per employee can reward outsourcing rather than superior AI economics. Pair it with operating income and infrastructure ownership.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11How do I account for stock-based compensation in AI margins?
Keep the company’s reported GAAP operating income as the primary measure, then show any adjusted figure separately with its definition. Stock-based compensation is a real economic cost, even though it is non-cash in the period recorded and may dilute shareholders later.
Is free cash flow better than operating income for infrastructure-heavy AI companies?
Neither is sufficient alone. Free cash flow shows cash remaining after capital expenditure, while operating income shows accrual profitability before that investment; a fast-growing company can have strong operating income and negative free cash flow during a capacity build.
How often should an AI-company comparison be updated?
Update it after each annual report for a full-period view and after quarterly reports when capacity, pricing, or utilization is changing rapidly. Keep prior versions so you can distinguish a structural margin change from a temporary investment cycle.
Can I estimate AI revenue from a cloud company’s total data-center spending?
No. Data centers typically serve many workloads, and capex does not identify the revenue produced by each one. Use an AI-specific disclosure if available; otherwise describe the spending as infrastructure investment and avoid allocating it to AI without evidence.
