Compare an AI assistant’s specific settings and retention rules—not its broad claims to be “private.” Start with the exact product and account type, then check separately how it uses data for model improvement, how long it keeps ordinary chats, and what may remain for safety, human review, feedback, or legal reasons. A control that stops future training does not necessarily stop the service from processing or temporarily retaining your prompts.
What should you compare first?
First identify the precise service surface and account whose policy applies. Consumer chat, a managed work or school account, and an API offering can have different defaults, controls, and contractual terms—even when they use the same provider’s models.

For each comparison, record the product, account type, country or region, and any relevant age eligibility. Then review the policy and settings for that exact experience. A provider’s consumer help page is not evidence of what an organization’s administrator or an API contract permits.
- Product surface: Name the assistant app or service, not only the provider.
- Account: Mark personal, work, school, or API use, and whether an administrator controls settings.
- Region and age: Note them because availability, eligibility, or terms may differ.
- Date checked: Record when you read the notice and settings. Provider policies and interface labels can change.
The examples below describe provider-stated terms for ChatGPT consumer services, Claude consumer plans, and signed-in Gemini Apps as reflected in official guidance current on October 26, 2026. They are not a survey of every assistant, country, enterprise contract, or API plan, and they are not independent verification of how the services implement their stated rules.

How do you distinguish model improvement from service operation?
Ask what happens to data for each purpose. “Not used for training” is narrower than “not processed” or “not retained”: a provider may still need to handle a prompt to answer it, protect the service, investigate abuse, process feedback, or meet legal obligations.
Check whether a setting applies to chats after you change it, previous chats, resumed conversations, coding sessions, feedback, uploads, memory, and connected services. Do not assume a single switch covers all those categories. In particular, feedback may send conversation context or attached content for review even when ordinary chats have different settings.

A conversation may disappear from the visible history before backend deletion is complete, and copies already selected for safety review or data already incorporated into completed model training may be treated differently. Ask what the provider says about each purpose rather than treating “delete” as a universal erasure promise.
How do ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini describe consumer data controls?
The table compares selected provider-stated terms, not an overall privacy ranking. The periods describe different data categories and purposes, so a smaller number does not by itself mean a more private service.

These are provider-stated periods in official guidance: OpenAI consumer-services guidance accessed October 26, 2026; Anthropic Privacy Center guidance dated July 1, 2026; and Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, updated October 19, 2026. They are not equivalent measurements: for example, one period concerns a safety copy, another backend deletion or model-training pipelines, and another activity settings or reviewed chats.

What does each provider’s setting mean in practice?
ChatGPT: compare model-improvement preferences, memory, and Temporary Chat separately
OpenAI describes model-improvement preferences and memory as separate controls for consumers. That distinction matters: a choice about improving models should not be treated as a choice about whether the assistant can retain or use memory. Check the controls available in your own plan and account rather than assuming every consumer sees an identical set of options.

Temporary Chat is useful when you do not want a conversation in history or used to create or update memories. OpenAI says Temporary Chats are not used to improve models while temporary, but may be retained for up to 30 days for safety. If you save one, it becomes a regular chat and follows the applicable settings. “Temporary” therefore describes particular behavior, not an assurance that no copy exists during that period.
Do not extend these consumer terms to an organizational workspace or API use. OpenAI identifies different defaults or controls for Business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare workspaces, and API data.
Claude: distinguish deletion from training already in progress
Anthropic says a deleted consumer conversation disappears from chat history immediately and is deleted from backend systems within 30 days. If you have allowed model improvement, new or resumed chats and coding sessions may be retained in de-identified form in training pipelines for up to five years. Those figures refer to different stages and purposes; the five-year period is not the ordinary deletion period for every conversation.
Anthropic says disabling model improvement prevents future use of previous or new chats or coding sessions for future model training, but does not remove data from training already underway or models already trained. Incognito chats are excluded from model improvement. The policy also describes longer retention for flagged conversations’ inputs, outputs, and safety scores, and retention related to legal matters, disputes, or policy enforcement.

Anthropic’s consumer retention guidance is not a substitute for commercial or API terms. A Free, Pro, or Max user should not assume that a commitment described for commercial or API services applies to their account.
Gemini Apps: Keep Activity is not a control for every Google data flow
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says Keep Activity is on by default for adults. With it on, activity may be used to provide, develop, and improve services, including training generative AI models; some chats may be reviewed by people or trained service providers. Activity auto-deletes after 18 months by default, with options for three months, 36 months, or no auto-delete.
With Keep Activity off, future chats do not appear in Gemini Apps Activity and are not used to train models unless you submit feedback. Google says these chats can remain associated with the account for up to 72 hours for service delivery, feedback processing, and protection of Google, users, and the public. Temporary chats are also not used to train Google AI, but Google still processes them to respond and protect the service, potentially with human review.
Google says chats reviewed for improvement or safety are disconnected from the account before provider review and retained for up to three years; deleting activity does not delete those reviewed copies. Feedback may include recent conversation context and uploaded or connected content, and may be retained for up to three years. Connected-app data, settings for other Google services, and work or school accounts add scope beyond the Gemini Apps activity setting.
How can you make a repeatable comparison?
Use the same questions for each service and save the answers with the date and source. This prevents a vague label such as “temporary” or a single retention period from standing in for a policy that treats data differently by category.

- Pin down the account. Record the exact assistant surface, personal versus work/school/API account, region, and whether an organization administrator controls retention.
- Record the default. Find the default model-training or service-improvement setting for that account. Note whether the default is different for age groups or account types if the provider says so.
- Trace the opt-out. Determine whether disabling improvement affects future prompts only, also applies to prior chats, and covers resumed conversations, coding sessions, feedback, files, voice, or connected services.
- Separate temporary use from ordinary history. Note whether a temporary mode is absent from chat history, excluded from memory, excluded from training, or merely subject to a shorter service-retention period.
- Map retention by purpose. Record ordinary history or auto-delete settings separately from safety, abuse prevention, legal, dispute, feedback, and human-review retention.
- Check deletion scope. Find the stated time to remove deleted data from backend systems and any exceptions, such as previously reviewed copies or training already underway or completed.
- Check who may review data. Look for human reviewers or trained service providers, what they may see, why review occurs, and whether reviewed material is separated from your account.
- Include related data categories. Check memory, uploads, voice, feedback, and connected-app content rather than assuming the chat setting controls them.
- Save the evidence. Keep the provider’s policy or setting instructions, the date checked, and the exact account scope. Recheck when the product or terms change.
How should you interpret retention periods?
Put the data category and purpose beside every number. “Up to 30 days” for a safety copy, “within 30 days” for backend deletion, “up to five years” in de-identified training pipelines, and “up to three years” for reviewed material do not describe the same thing. Comparing the numbers without their qualifications creates a false ranking.
Likewise, distinguish a default from an available choice and a maximum from a routine duration. Gemini’s 18-month auto-delete is the adult default described in the cited Hub, not the only setting; users can select three months, 36 months, or no auto-delete. A provider-stated maximum or deletion window does not tell you how often a particular account’s content is accessed.
There is no defensible single privacy score in these examples. The official materials provide no named cross-provider statistic or independent benchmark, and the providers describe different categories, exceptions, and controls. A useful comparison reports those differences instead of converting them into a winner.

What should you do before entering sensitive information?
Do not treat an opt-out or temporary mode as a confidentiality guarantee. Check the exact service terms and avoid entering information you would not want processed for the service’s stated purposes or potentially seen during review.
Google explicitly warns in its Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, updated October 19, 2026: “Please don’t enter confidential information that you wouldn’t want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve our services, including machine-learning technologies.” That warning is specific to Gemini’s guidance, but it illustrates why readers should assess reviewer access and feedback pathways as well as training settings.
For an account provided by an employer or school, ask the administrator which product and retention rules apply before relying on consumer-facing controls. For API or commercial use, consult the applicable terms for that service rather than importing promises from a consumer help page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a privacy policy prove how a service actually handles my data?
No. A policy establishes what the provider says its terms and controls are, not independent verification of implementation. For stronger assurance in a work setting, review the applicable contract and administrator controls as well as the public notice.
Can I compare assistants by choosing the one with the shortest retention period?
Not reliably. A short period may refer only to visible history or one safety copy, while other data categories can have separate rules. Compare purpose, category, access, and deletion exceptions alongside each period.
Why does my privacy comparison need a date?
Providers can change defaults, setting names, and retention language. A dated record tells you which policy version and account context your decision was based on, and when it is worth checking again.
