Start with your syllabus and assignment instructions: a correct citation does not make prohibited AI use permissible. If your instructor allows it, document what the AI contributed, use the citation style required for the assignment, and verify any facts or sources it supplied. APA, MLA, and Chicago handle AI-generated content differently, and process help such as brainstorming or editing may also call for a disclosure.
What should you do before citing ChatGPT or another AI tool?
Check the course and assignment rules first. They determine whether a particular use—such as generating prose, translating, brainstorming, or editing—is allowed, and whether you must provide a disclosure, transcript, or appendix. Citation style governs how you document an allowed use; it does not grant permission.

- You incorporated AI-generated material. If you quote, reproduce, or rely on generated text or other output, attribute that output in the form required by your style and course.
- The tool helped with your process. For brainstorming, editing, translation, or drafting assistance, describe what the tool did when required or when it materially shaped the work. A general tool reference may be more appropriate than citing a particular chat.
- The tool pointed you to another source. Open and read the original source, then cite that source for the claim or quotation. An AI response is not proof that a suggested article, quotation, statistic, or reference is genuine.
Keep a record of the tool and model, the date, what you asked it to do, and which output you used. These details help you prepare a citation or disclosure and explain your process accurately. Never claim to have used a model, shared a conversation, or verified material in a way that you did not.

How do APA 7 citations for ChatGPT work?
APA 7 treats the company that developed the tool as the author of an AI reference. APA’s official AI guidance, updated September 9, 2025, provides one format for a specific shareable conversation and another for a general reference to the tool.
For a specific conversation
When a particular conversation is useful and appropriate to share, APA’s template is:
AI Company Name. (year, month day). Title of chat [Generative AI chat]. Tool Name/Model. URL of the chat
For ChatGPT, use the actual developer name, the conversation’s real title and generation date, the model actually used if known, and the real share URL. The in-text parenthetical citation uses the company and year, such as (OpenAI, 2026) for a conversation generated in 2026. Do not invent a title, model, date, or link to make the example look complete.
For general help or a conversation you should not share
If a particular chat is inappropriate or unhelpful to share, APA permits a general tool reference:

Use the actual tool and model details that apply. APA distinguishes a specific-chat reference from a general tool reference; choose based on what the assignment needs readers to inspect. In either case, explain the work the AI performed in a suitable part of the assignment when that contribution matters or your instructor requires disclosure.
How do you cite ChatGPT in MLA 9?
MLA 9 starts with a description of the generated material, often drawn from the prompt; it does not put ChatGPT in the author position. MLA’s official AI guidance, updated August 13, 2025, recommends including the tool as the container, the specific model or version if known, the company, the generation date, and preferably a stable link to the output.
The pattern in MLA’s official example is:
“Description of actual prompt” prompt. ChatGPT, model [actual model], OpenAI, [actual generation date], [actual share URL].
Replace each bracketed instruction with accurate information; those words are directions, not text to leave in a submitted citation. The in-text citation points to the opening description, shortened if needed to make a clear match with the Works Cited entry. If the tool cannot provide a stable share link, MLA accepts its general URL. Do not identify an unknown model as though you know which one generated the response.

MLA’s guidance also separates documenting AI output from explaining how AI contributed to the writing process. A Works Cited entry alone may not tell an instructor whether the tool brainstormed, edited, translated, or drafted material, so follow any separate disclosure requirements.
Can you cite ChatGPT in a Chicago footnote?
Yes. Chicago’s notes-and-bibliography system can document AI output in a footnote or endnote. A university library guide to Chicago 18th edition section 14.112 says a note can describe the prompt or output, identify the tool or model and developer, give the generation date, and provide an available URL.

A practical note should give enough information for the reader to understand what output you used. For example, a note can identify the prompt or generated passage, name ChatGPT and its developer, state the date, and include a safe, available conversation link. If the prompt is already clearly explained in your prose, the library guide says to omit redundant detail. The guide says an AI chat generally need not appear in the bibliography unless the instructor requests it.
That guidance is for Chicago notes and bibliography. Chicago author-date assignments have their own in-text and reference-list treatment, so do not transfer a notes-format example to an author-date paper without checking the required instructions. The Chicago publisher’s section 14.112 was access-restricted when the university library guide was consulted; treat the library’s explanation as that guide’s account, and check your instructor’s preferred treatment.
Which format should you use?
Use the style named by the assignment, then choose a format that fits what you are documenting. These systems are not interchangeable templates.

For all three, the appropriate level of detail depends on whether you used a particular generated response, relied on process assistance, or followed a lead to an original source. If your instructor supplies a specific template or disclosure rule, follow that instruction over a generic example.
Do you need to disclose brainstorming, editing, or other process help?
Often, you should explain material AI assistance even when the work does not call for a citation to a particular generated response. Use the disclosure format your instructor requires; describe the actual tool and task rather than making a broad or inaccurate claim.
For example, an adaptable disclosure is:
I used [tool and model, if known] to [specific permitted task]. I reviewed and revised the output and verified factual claims against the cited original sources.

Use that wording only if it accurately describes what happened. Replace the bracketed directions with the real details, and do not say you reviewed, revised, or verified something unless you did. If your instructor requires different wording, a transcript, or an appendix, follow those directions. MLA explicitly notes that an explanation of AI use can extend beyond a citation; APA also distinguishes specific-chat references from general references for editing and organizing writing.
Should you cite ChatGPT or the article it found?
If an AI tool directed you to an article, book, dataset, or other original source, cite that source for the claim after locating and reading it. Cite the AI tool as well only if you independently used or incorporated its generated output and the assignment’s rules call for documenting that use.
APA advises writers to cite the underlying source when AI acts as a search intermediary. MLA likewise advises opening, reading, and citing a suggested source: AI can invent references or get real ones wrong. Do not cite a source you have not inspected as though it supports your statement. If you cannot locate or verify a suggested work, leave it out and find a reliable source instead.
Can you share a conversation link safely?
A specific conversation link can make a citation easier to inspect, but it can also make conversation content visible to people who receive the link. OpenAI’s sharing documentation says a personal-account conversation link can be viewed by anyone holding it; links created in managed workspaces can be limited to eligible workspace members.

- Search for the work using details the AI supplied, such as its title, author, journal, publisher, or date.
- Open the original publication or a reliable record for it. Confirm that the source exists and that its bibliographic details match.
- Read the relevant passage in the source and confirm it supports the claim you plan to make.
- Cite the original source for that claim. If the AI-generated material itself also appears in your assignment, document that use separately as required.
APA ordinarily does not require a reference for AI embedded in common software, but that does not override a course policy. Ask your instructor how to disclose an embedded feature if it materially contributed to an assignment and the syllabus does not say.
What details should you record while using an AI tool?
Keep a brief, accurate record so you can prepare the right citation or disclosure without reconstructing the interaction later. Record only what you actually know, and handle any transcript according to the assignment’s privacy and submission rules.

- Omitting process disclosure: a formal citation may not meet an instructor’s separate requirement to explain how AI helped.
