On an Apple TV 4K, choose a HomePod or stereo pair permanently at Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Output. For a one-time change, hold the TV button on the remote, open Control Center, select Audio Controls, and pick the speaker you want. You can also set the default from the Home app on an iPhone or iPad.

The Apple TV 4K and HomePod must be assigned to the same room in the Home app and connected to the same network. One HomePod is the simplest option; two matched HomePods configured as a stereo pair provide stereo separation and supported home-theater surround effects. HomePod mini works with Apple TV 4K, but it does not render Dolby Atmos, 5.1, or 7.1 as those formats; they are reduced to mono or stereo.

Which HomePod setting should you use: default or temporary?

Use the Audio Output setting when you want Apple TV 4K to use the same HomePod every time. Use Control Center when you want to switch speakers for the current viewing session without replacing the configured default.

Default output

A HomePod selected as the default receives all Apple TV 4K sound, including menus, notifications, games, and video. This is the right choice when the HomePod is your normal television speaker.

#1 Best Overall
Apple - HomePod mini - Yellow
  • Rich, 360-Degree Sound – Delivers deep bass and crisp high frequencies for immersive audio in any room.
  • Siri Voice Assistant – Control music, smart home devices, and get information hands-free.
  • Seamless Apple Integration – Works effortlessly with iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV for a connected experience.
  • Compact & Stylish Design – Small but powerful, fits perfectly in any space.
  • Privacy & Security – Designed to keep your personal information safe and secure.

Temporary output

Control Center is useful when another person is watching in a different room, when you want to test a stereo pair, or when you only need a second speaker for one program. Apple notes that a temporary selection made with an AirPlay speaker resets to the default output after Apple TV 4K sleeps.

What must be set up before a HomePod appears?

Apple requires the Apple TV 4K and the HomePod or HomePod mini to belong to the same room in the Home app. They also need to be on the same network so the Apple TV can discover the speaker.

  • Set up the Apple TV 4K and sign in with the Apple Account used for your Home.
  • Add each HomePod to the Home app on an iPhone or iPad.
  • Assign the Apple TV 4K and the HomePod to the same room.
  • For two speakers, create a stereo pair first, then assign the pair to that room.
  • Confirm that the Apple TV and speakers are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

If the Apple TV displays a setup prompt, choose Use HomePod speakers as Apple TV speakers, then choose Use as TV Speakers. If the prompt never appears, the same arrangement can be completed from the Audio Output menu.

How do I permanently choose a HomePod on Apple TV 4K?

The persistent setting is on the Apple TV itself. It remains the default until you select a different output.

  1. Open Settings on Apple TV.
  2. Select Video and Audio.
  3. Choose Audio Output.
  4. Select the HomePod, HomePod stereo pair, or another AirPlay-enabled speaker you want as the default.

When a HomePod is selected here, Apple TV routes system and game audio as well as film, television, and music playback to it. A stereo pair appears as one selectable destination rather than as two independent speakers.

How do I switch HomePods for one viewing session?

Use the remote’s Control Center shortcut when you do not want to alter the permanent setting.

  1. Hold the TV button on the Apple TV remote.
  2. In Control Center, select Audio Controls.
  3. Choose the HomePod, stereo pair, or AirPlay speaker that should play audio.
  4. Close Control Center and resume playback.

This is the fastest way to move sound between two available HomePod destinations. If you choose a non-HomePod AirPlay speaker, Apple TV returns to its default audio output after the Apple TV goes to sleep.

Can I set the default HomePod from an iPhone or iPad?

Yes. The Home app provides the same default-output choice without navigating Apple TV’s menus.

  1. Open the Home app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap the Apple TV accessory.
  3. Tap the Gear icon to open its settings.
  4. Choose Default Audio Output.
  5. Select the HomePod or stereo pair.

This method is convenient when the Apple TV is mounted out of reach or when you are configuring several rooms from one device.

Should I choose one HomePod, two HomePods, or HomePod mini?

The best choice depends on whether you need simple TV audio, left-right stereo imaging, or supported surround playback. The table compares the documented differences.

Setup Number of speakers Stereo or surround capability Dolby-format support Placement guidance Best fit
One HomePod 1 Single-speaker playback; suitable for Apple TV audio Supports the HomePod theater experience, including Dolby Atmos where the format and hardware support it Within 10 inches (25 cm) of a wall and as close to the center of the TV as possible A small room or a straightforward replacement for TV speakers
Two HomePods as a stereo pair 2 True left-right stereo separation and supported home-cinema surround on Apple TV 4K Provides the intended stereo or surround presentation when the content and Apple TV support it On either side of the TV, about 4 feet (1.2 m) apart for optimal surround sound Viewers who want a wider soundstage or a theater-style setup
HomePod mini 1 or 2 Works as an Apple TV 4K home-theater speaker; a pair can provide stereo positioning Does not support Dolby Atmos, 5.1, or 7.1 surround sound; those formats are rendered in mono or stereo Use the same-room and network requirements; position a pair on either side of the TV Compact rooms or listeners who value size and cost over multichannel formats

A pair is not automatically better for every room. If the speakers must sit close together or off to one side, a single full-size HomePod placed near the TV center may produce a more coherent result. A pair is most useful when you can maintain left-right symmetry.

How should I place a single HomePod?

For one HomePod, Apple recommends placing it within 10 inches (25 cm) of a wall and as close to the center of the television as possible. The guidance is intended to keep the speaker’s reflected sound and direct sound balanced with the screen image.

  • Keep the HomePod on a stable, open surface rather than inside a closed cabinet.
  • Place it near the TV’s centerline so voices do not seem to come from one side.
  • Avoid placing it far behind the viewer or at floor level, where dialogue can appear detached from the picture.

How should I place a stereo pair?

Put the two HomePods on opposite sides of the TV and aim for roughly 4 feet (1.2 m) between them when your room allows. This spacing helps preserve left-right separation and gives Apple TV 4K a wider basis for supported surround effects.

  1. Place one speaker to the left and one to the right of the screen.
  2. Keep both speakers at similar heights and roughly equal distances from the main seating position.
  3. In the Home app, create the stereo pair and assign that pair—not the individual speakers—to the same room as Apple TV.
  4. Select the pair under Audio Output on Apple TV.

If one speaker is substantially closer than the other, the stereo image can pull toward that side. Correct the physical placement before troubleshooting software.

Does HomePod mini play Dolby Atmos from Apple TV?

HomePod mini is supported for Apple TV 4K home-theater audio, but it does not support Dolby Atmos, 5.1, or 7.1 surround sound. When Apple TV sends those formats to HomePod mini, they are rendered in mono or stereo.

Choose the mini when compact size is the priority and stereo playback is sufficient. Choose a full-size HomePod or a compatible stereo pair when preserving the intended Dolby or multichannel presentation matters.

Can HomePod play sound from a game console or DVD player connected to the TV?

Apple documents an ARC/eARC route for Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later). With a compatible television, this can send audio from a console, DVD player, or another device connected to the TV back through Apple TV 4K and the default HomePod.

Requirements for television audio

  • Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later).
  • A television with ARC or eARC support.
  • An eARC-compatible HDMI cable and a compatible HDMI connection.
  • HDMI-CEC enabled on the television.
  • HomePod selected as the Apple TV default audio output.

How to enable ARC/eARC television audio

  1. Connect Apple TV 4K to the television using the appropriate HDMI connection and cable.
  2. Turn on HDMI-CEC in the television’s settings.
  3. On Apple TV, open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Output.
  4. Set the HomePod or stereo pair as the default output.
  5. In the same Audio Output area, open Audio Return Channel.
  6. Turn on Play Television Audio.
  7. Select the television input where the console, DVD player, or other source is connected.

The television must support ARC or eARC; without that capability, the Apple TV cannot use this return-audio path for those connected devices.

Why does my HomePod not appear in Audio Output?

The usual causes are room assignment, network mismatch, an incomplete stereo-pair setup, or a device that does not meet Apple’s Apple TV 4K requirements. Check the following in order.

1. Verify the Apple TV model

The documented HomePod home-theater setup requires Apple TV 4K. If you are using a different Apple TV model, the HomePod options described here may not be available.

2. Check the Home app room

Open the Home app and inspect the room listed for both accessories. Move the Apple TV and HomePod into the same room. For a stereo pair, assign the pair to the room after pairing rather than assigning only one speaker.

3. Check the network

Confirm that the Apple TV and HomePod are connected to the same network. A guest network, separate access point, or changed Wi-Fi credentials can prevent discovery even when both devices appear powered on.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Complete the setup manually

If the automatic prompt was dismissed, open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Output on Apple TV and look for the HomePod there. You can also use the Home app’s Apple TV settings and choose Default Audio Output.

5. Recheck the stereo pair

Two speakers must be created as a stereo pair before they can be selected as one destination. If only one side appears, open the Home app and confirm that the pair still exists and both speakers are assigned to the same room.

How do I switch between two HomePods?

If the two speakers are configured as a stereo pair, select the pair whenever you want both to play together. If they are separate HomePod accessories in different rooms, use Control Center’s Audio Controls to select one for the current session, or choose one under the persistent Audio Output setting to make it the regular destination.

Do not expect independent left and right control from the stereo-pair entry: Apple TV treats the pair as a single audio output. To use only one speaker, select that individual HomePod instead of the pair.

What happens to Apple TV audio after the speaker is changed?

A HomePod chosen as the default receives more than video sound. Apple’s Apple TV guide specifies that system and game audio are routed there as well. This makes the default setting appropriate for users who want every Apple TV sound to remain on the HomePod.

Apple - HomePod mini - Space Gray
  • Rich, 360-Degree Sound – Delivers deep bass and crisp high frequencies for immersive audio in any room.
  • Siri Voice Assistant – Control music, smart home devices, and get information hands-free.
  • Seamless Apple Integration – Works effortlessly with iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV for a connected experience.
  • Compact & Stylish Design – Small but powerful, fits perfectly in any space.
  • Privacy & Security – Designed to keep your personal information safe and secure.

A temporary AirPlay selection is different: it is intended for an immediate listening change, and Apple says the selection for non-HomePod AirPlay speakers returns to the default after Apple TV sleeps. If you want a destination to remain the normal output, set it under Audio Output rather than relying on Control Center.

Which setup is right for common rooms?

Small room or centered seating

Choose one full-size HomePod near the TV center when you want simple setup, clear dialogue, and full Apple TV system audio without arranging two speakers.

Wide seating or a theater-style presentation

Choose two full-size HomePods as a stereo pair when you can place them on opposite sides of the TV and roughly 4 feet apart. This arrangement is the strongest match for stereo separation and supported surround effects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compact setup with stereo playback

Choose one or two HomePod mini speakers when small dimensions matter more than Dolby Atmos and multichannel support. A mini pair can still provide left-right positioning, but Dolby Atmos, 5.1, and 7.1 content is rendered in mono or stereo.

TV with several connected sources

Use a HomePod as the Apple TV default and enable the documented ARC/eARC settings if you want audio from a compatible console, DVD player, or other television input to return through Apple TV. This requires Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later), HDMI-CEC, a compatible cable, and an ARC/eARC-capable TV.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use different HomePods on different days without rebuilding the setup?

Yes. Keep the devices assigned to the appropriate rooms, then change the destination from Control Center for a one-time choice or from the Home app when you want to replace the default. Creating a stereo pair is only necessary when you want two speakers treated as one synchronized output.

Will a HomePod default also play Apple TV menu clicks and game sounds?

Yes. Apple’s Apple TV guide says a HomePod default routes all Apple TV 4K sound, including system and game audio. That differs from treating the speaker as a temporary destination for a single playback session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if my television has ARC but not eARC?

The television must support ARC or eARC for Apple’s Audio Return Channel feature. Check the television’s HDMI specifications and enable HDMI-CEC; without a compatible return channel, devices connected to the TV cannot use this documented route through Apple TV and HomePod.

Do two HomePod mini speakers become Dolby Atmos speakers when paired?

No. Pairing improves left-right stereo presentation, but HomePod mini still does not support Dolby Atmos, 5.1, or 7.1 surround sound. Those formats are rendered in mono or stereo.
