Choose Mac Studio by matching the workload to its chip, unified memory, storage, displays and ports—not by assuming the highest tier is always necessary. Apple’s current lineup offers M5 Max and M5 Ultra: M5 Max covers demanding creative and development work, while M5 Ultra raises the ceiling for workloads that need substantially more memory, GPU capacity or displays. The right configuration depends on the size of your active projects and how you work.
Start with the workload, not the chip name
Before choosing a tier, write down what the computer must handle at the same time: applications, active projects, local AI models, displays and connected storage. Apple’s specifications describe what each configuration supports, but they do not establish universal memory requirements or which chip is best for a particular application. For application-specific performance, look for independent tests that match your software and project size.

- CPU and GPU work: Consider whether your tasks rely on CPU throughput, sustained GPU work, or both. Apple positions M5 Max for roles including software engineering, photography, music, design, real-time 3D and motion graphics, and associates M5 Ultra with heavier graphics and video workloads.
- Memory: Estimate the combined footprint of your largest active projects, demanding applications running together and any local model you need to keep in memory.
- Storage: Account separately for applications, current work, caches and media you want on the internal SSD.
- Displays and connections: Check the exact number, resolution and refresh rate of your monitors, as well as which devices need front-panel access.
- Cost: Compare the total price of the configurations that meet your requirements. Current prices and price-performance comparisons are not established here.
Choose between M5 Max and M5 Ultra
| Configuration | CPU and GPU options | Unified memory | Internal SSD | External displays |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| M5 Max | 18-core CPU; GPU configurable up to 40 cores | 36GB, 48GB, 64GB or 128GB | 512GB to 8TB | Up to five; exact resolution and refresh-rate combinations depend on the setup |
| M5 Ultra | 30-core CPU and up to 64-core GPU, configurable up to a 36-core CPU and 80-core GPU | 96GB, 256GB or 512GB | 1TB to 16TB | Up to eight; exact resolution and refresh-rate combinations depend on the setup |
These configuration choices and display limits are listed by Apple; consult its Mac Studio technical specifications for the current combinations. Treat the table as a hardware comparison, not a performance ranking for any specific app.
When M5 Max is the more relevant tier
Examine M5 Max if your work is demanding but does not call for the Ultra’s maximum memory, GPU configuration, display count or front-port capabilities. It offers up to 128GB unified memory and an 8TB internal SSD ceiling, making it worth comparing for creative production, software development, photography and graphics work that fits within those limits.

When M5 Ultra is worth considering
Consider M5 Ultra when a workload’s memory footprint, sustained GPU demands, display array or stated application requirements justify a higher ceiling. It supports up to 512GB unified memory, an 80-core GPU configuration and up to eight external displays. Apple also positions it for large local AI models and heavier video and graphics work. Those capabilities do not mean every editor, developer or AI user needs Ultra; base the decision on actual workload demands.
How much unified memory should you choose?
Apple lists M5 Max with 36GB, 48GB, 64GB or 128GB of unified memory, and M5 Ultra with 96GB, 256GB or 512GB. Unified memory is selected as part of the configuration, so estimate your needs before buying rather than assuming you can add capacity later.

- If you use a local model, account for its memory needs while allowing room for the operating system and other active work.
- Choose a capacity that fits that combined use, with headroom if your projects are likely to grow.
Apple describes M5 Ultra as capable of running massive models locally, but its announcement and specification page do not provide a model-size-to-memory sizing chart. Nor do they establish a universal rule such as a fixed amount of memory for every 4K editing workflow. Apple lists memory bandwidth of 614GB/s for M5 Max and 1.2TB/s for M5 Ultra; those manufacturer specifications are not application benchmarks.

Thunderbolt 5 provides an expansion path for external storage, but the available evidence does not establish compatibility or performance for any particular third-party drive. If you plan to work from an external SSD, check that specific drive’s compatibility and performance for your workflow rather than treating all external storage as equivalent.
Check display limits and port placement
Apple specifies up to five external displays for M5 Max and up to eight for M5 Ultra. The supported resolution and refresh rate vary with the number of displays and how they are connected. For example, Apple lists M5 Max combinations that include four displays up to 6K at 60Hz plus a fifth up to 5K at 60Hz over HDMI; M5 Ultra supports configurations including eight displays up to 6K at 60Hz or four up to 8K at 60Hz. Verify the complete current display table against your monitors before ordering.

Both tiers include four rear Thunderbolt 5 ports, USB-A, HDMI 2.1, 10Gb Ethernet and an SDXC UHS-II card slot. The front ports differ: M5 Max has two USB-C ports rated up to 10Gb/s, while M5 Ultra has two Thunderbolt 5 ports. If you regularly connect fast storage or other high-speed devices at the front, that distinction may affect which tier fits your setup.

How to interpret Apple’s performance claims
Apple’s August 2026 announcement reports that M5 Max GPU performance is up to 50 percent faster than the previous generation and says M5 Ultra achieves up to 4.3 times the peak AI compute performance of M3 Ultra. Apple also says a cluster of four Mac Studio systems delivers up to three times faster AI inference than one system. These are Apple-published comparisons, not independent tests or guarantees for a specific application, project or configuration. Read the stated comparison basis in Apple’s announcement and seek tests of your own software if you need a real-world performance comparison.

Make the final configuration choice
- Confirm the workload: List the applications, project sizes and simultaneous tasks that matter most.
- Set the capacity requirements: Decide the unified memory and internal SSD capacity needed for those projects.
- Verify displays and ports: Match your exact monitor resolutions and refresh rates to Apple’s configuration table, then check front and rear connections.
- Compare eligible tiers: Choose M5 Max if its limits meet the workload; move to M5 Ultra when its extra memory, GPU, display or front-port capabilities solve a concrete need.
- Check current availability and price: Configurations and prices can change; compare the live Apple listing and any retailer offer before buying.
Apple’s technical specifications are the primary reference for current hardware options. Its prior-generation Mac Studio (2025) specifications are historical context only; they describe different chip choices and should not be used to select a current M5 configuration.
