Can an old Kindle still browse the web? Some Kindle e-readers have an experimental or Basic Web browser, but it is limited, and whether it connects or loads a page depends on the exact model, software, and network. First identify your Kindle model: “old Kindle” covers devices with different browser and connectivity features.
What the old Kindle browser can—and cannot—do
Amazon’s Kindle User’s Guide, 5th Edition describes an “Experimental application called Web Browser.” The guide says it supports JavaScript, SSL, and cookies, but not media plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave, or Java applets. The Kindle 2nd Edition User Guide likewise describes an experimental browser for viewing most Amazon web pages. These are historical descriptions of those devices, not a current guarantee that the browser remains supported or that today’s websites will work. Amazon’s 5th Edition guide and 2nd Edition guide

In practice, a simple, mostly text-based page is a better fit than a modern site built around complex scripts, media, elaborate layouts, or current sign-in flows. That expectation follows from the documented limitations; compatibility with any particular current website is not established without trying it on the exact Kindle.

Check Settings and look for Device Info (the wording can vary by model), or compare your device’s physical features with Amazon’s Kindle identification guide. Knowing the generation helps establish whether the device has Wi-Fi, cellular connectivity, or a browser at all.

Why an old Kindle may not connect to Wi-Fi
Amazon says Kindle devices released before 2021 do not support 5 GHz Wi-Fi or WPA3. If your router uses only those settings, the Kindle may need a compatible 2.4 GHz network with security it supports. Check Amazon’s current Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps for the device.
- Check the router: Try a compatible 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network rather than 5 GHz or WPA3-only settings.
- For public Wi-Fi, prompt the sign-in page: If the network’s captive-portal login does not appear, open a simple website in the Kindle browser, as Amazon suggests.
- Check device software: Install the latest software available for that Kindle model; Amazon lists update information on its Kindle software security updates page.
- Try another network: A phone hotspot can help determine whether the issue is the Kindle’s compatibility with the usual router or network.
What if the Kindle uses cellular service?
Older cellular Kindles are a separate case from Wi-Fi models. Some earlier e-readers lost cellular internet access as carriers shut down 2G and 3G networks. The impact and timing varied by carrier and market, so a shutdown date in one country does not establish what happened everywhere. Historical discussion in Amazon’s customer forums reflects that variation; check the carrier and country relevant to your device.

What can still work if web browsing does not?
- Read books stored on the Kindle: Local books can still be read if the device itself works. This is separate from internet access; it does not establish whether a book can be redownloaded from an account.
- Buy and deliver Kindle books: Amazon says you can purchase books on its website using a phone or computer and deliver them to a Kindle. See Amazon’s instructions for buying books on a Kindle e-reader.
- Send personal documents: Amazon’s Send to Kindle service can send documents to Kindle devices and apps at no additional cost. Delivery to a particular legacy Kindle depends on that model’s current connectivity and support. See Amazon’s manual book-delivery instructions.
- Read eligible books in another browser: Kindle for Web supports reading some Kindle titles in desktop and mobile browsers, but Amazon says not all titles are available. It is not the browser on an E Ink Kindle. Learn about Kindle for Web.
Do not confuse an E Ink Kindle with a Fire tablet
Amazon Silk is documented for Fire tablets, Fire TV, and Echo Show. That does not mean an E Ink Kindle has a modern Silk browser. Amazon Silk documentation covers those other product families.
