Choose a Mac mini by matching its chip, unified memory and SSD capacity to the work you actually do, then verify that the model supports your displays and peripherals. Apple’s current UK specifications list M6 and M5 Pro Mac mini families; options can vary by region, so confirm exact configurations and availability in the live configurator before buying.
Start with your workload, not the upgrade list
Write down the applications you use, the size of the projects you handle, how many apps you keep open at once, and how long demanding tasks run. This gives you a more useful basis for choosing than assuming a particular configuration is right for everyone.

- For everyday office, browsing and home use, check that the standard-chip model and its available memory and storage options suit your apps and multitasking.
- For photo, video, audio, software development or local AI work, consider project scale, concurrent applications and sustained workload duration before choosing between M6 and M5 Pro.
- For large media libraries or project archives, estimate how much you want available on the Mac mini itself and what you might keep on external storage.
- If you use multiple displays, make the number of screens and their resolution and refresh rate part of the chip decision.
Apple’s current UK technical specifications describe the available configurations and their capabilities. They do not establish a universal memory or SSD amount for a category such as office work, editing or coding.

Choose between M6 and M5 Pro based on capability
Apple’s current UK specifications list M6 and M5 Pro families, but the exact selectable memory and SSD combinations should be checked in the live configurator. Compare the capabilities Apple publishes for the configurations available to you rather than assuming that a chip label alone predicts how quickly a particular app will run.

- SIZE DOWN. POWER UP — The far mightier, way tinier Mac mini desktop computer is five by five inches of pure power. Built for Apple Intelligence.* Redesigned around Apple silicon to unleash the full speed and capabilities of the spectacular M4 Pro chip. With ports at your convenience, on the front and back.
- LOOKS SMALL. LIVES LARGE — At just five by five inches, Mac mini is designed to fit perfectly next to a monitor and is easy to place just about anywhere.
- CONVENIENT CONNECTIONS — Get connected with Thunderbolt, HDMI, and Gigabit Ethernet ports on the back and, for the first time, front-facing USB-C ports and a headphone jack.
- SUPERCHARGED BY M4 PRO — The M4 Pro chip brings extra power to take on demanding projects like working with complex scenes or compiling millions of lines of code.
- BUILT FOR APPLE INTELLIGENCE — Apple Intelligence is the personal intelligence system that helps you write, express yourself, and get things done effortlessly. With groundbreaking privacy protections, it gives you peace of mind that no one else can access your data — not even Apple.*
Apple’s October 2024 M4 announcement described M4 Pro as aimed at more demanding workloads, including audio, video, AI transcription and 3D rendering. It also reported comparisons for M4-generation systems against specified older Macs. Those are Apple’s historical vendor-reported results, not independent tests and not evidence of how M6 compares with M5 Pro. They should not be used to promise a particular speedup for a current model.
Set unified memory for project size and multitasking
Unified memory is a configuration choice to make against the apps and projects you expect to run together. Larger projects and more simultaneous demanding applications may call for more headroom, but Apple’s specifications list options rather than an app-by-app sizing rule. Identify your normal workload and use Apple’s live configuration choices to compare what is available in your region.

- 8-core CPU packs up to 3x faster performance to fly through workflows quicker than ever*

Do not treat an external SSD as a substitute for unified memory: an external drive can hold files, but it does not add system memory.
Choose SSD capacity for the files you keep local
Consider the space used by apps, active projects and files you want readily available on the computer, along with expected growth. If you keep archives or some media externally, the Mac mini’s USB-C and Thunderbolt ports provide connection options; Apple’s port specifications do not establish that every external drive or interface will deliver the same real-world performance.

Check the exact port selection for the configuration you plan to buy. Apple lists Thunderbolt 4 for M6 and Thunderbolt 5 for M5 Pro, alongside HDMI, front USB-C ports and configurable Ethernet. The interface generation can matter when selecting fast storage and other peripherals, but advertised interface throughput is not a guarantee of an accessory’s actual performance.

Apple lists support for up to three external displays for both families, but the supported resolution and refresh-rate combinations differ. “Up to three” is not enough to confirm compatibility: match your monitor count and each display’s intended mode to the display table in Apple’s current specifications before choosing a model. This can make the chip choice consequential even when raw processing speed is not your main concern.

Plan the complete desktop setup
Apple’s in-box list names the Mac mini and power lead. Check the product listing for your market, and include the display and any required keyboard and mouse in your setup plan. A monitor is not just an accessory consideration: its resolution and refresh rate must also fit the selected Mac mini’s display support.

Use this final configuration checklist
- List your real workload: note your applications, project sizes, simultaneous tasks and the duration of demanding sessions.
- Compare the chips: use Apple’s published capabilities for the M6 and M5 Pro configurations available in your region; do not infer unverified app-specific speed differences.
- Select memory: choose among the options actually offered for that configuration, based on your projects and multitasking rather than a universal rule.
- Select storage: account for apps, active files and expected growth, then decide which archives or other files could live on external storage.
- Verify displays and connections: confirm your monitors’ count, resolution and refresh rate, plus the ports and Ethernet option your peripherals and network require.
- Check the whole purchase: verify regional availability and what is in the box, then account for the display and input devices you need.
