How to Choose the Right iPhone Storage Size

Check current iPhone storage use, then weigh offline needs, iCloud Photos and video habits against the capacities offered for your chosen model.

Choose iPhone storage by checking how much space you use now, then accounting for what you expect to keep on your next phone. On your current iPhone, go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage to see used space and which apps take up the most room. Apple does not publish a single storage recommendation that applies to every buyer.

Start with the storage you use today

On your current iPhone, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Review the used-space total, the storage categories and the apps at the top of the list. Apple recommends checking your current device before moving to a lower-capacity one; its guidance on moving to a lower-capacity device can help you identify what to review.

Compare your current use with the capacity options for the exact iPhone model you plan to buy. Then consider whether your habits are likely to change before your next upgrade: for example, whether you expect to take more video, install larger apps or keep more content downloaded. That is a planning judgment, not a guaranteed growth forecast.

Decide what needs to stay on the phone

Photos, videos, music, apps and other files all use device storage. Think about what you want available when you have no reliable internet connection: offline maps or playlists, downloaded shows, work files, games, and your full photo or video library can all affect the capacity that feels comfortable.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
  • Mostly online use: If you are happy to stream or fetch content when needed, you may not need to keep as many downloads on the phone.
  • Frequent offline use: Travel, commuting or limited connectivity can make locally stored media and files more valuable.
  • Large apps or games: Check the iPhone Storage list for the apps that already use the most space, rather than assuming every app is small.

Keep iPhone storage and iCloud storage separate

Built-in iPhone capacity is the space physically available on the device. iCloud storage is separate: it can hold synced or backed-up information, but it does not add capacity to the phone. Apple provides 5GB of free iCloud storage when a user signs up, according to Apple’s 2026 iCloud storage guidance; that is a cloud-storage allowance, not an iPhone capacity tier. See Apple’s explanation of iCloud and device storage.

What Optimize iPhone Storage changes

By default, photos and videos are stored on the iPhone in their original high-resolution form. With iCloud Photos and Optimize iPhone Storage enabled, full-resolution originals are stored in iCloud and space-saving copies are kept on the phone as needed. Apple notes that photos and videos in iCloud Photos use both iCloud and device storage; the phone may optimize less frequently accessed items as local space is needed. This requires enough iCloud storage, and you may need an internet connection to fetch an original that is not kept locally.

Apple’s key distinction is: “Photos and videos you keep in iCloud Photos use your iCloud storage and your device storage.” Read Apple’s photo and video storage guidance before relying on optimization to reduce local use.

Be careful when deleting synced photos

If iCloud Photos is on, deleting a photo or video removes it across devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Deletion is not a way to clear a single iPhone while keeping the item in the synced library. To free space, Apple also suggests reviewing app use, removing content you no longer need, transferring media to a computer or considering iCloud options.

Account for video—especially ProRes

Routine video capture and ProRes recording have very different storage consequences. Apple says ProRes files can be up to 30 times larger than HEVC files; that is Apple’s stated upper comparison, not a per-minute estimate. Apple also requires at least 10 percent of the device’s storage to be free to record ProRes. If you plan to use ProRes regularly, leave room for both the footage and the free-space requirement.

Some supported iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro models can record ProRes directly to a USB-C external storage device. For ProRes 4K60, Apple specifies a drive supporting at least 220MB/s; for 4K120, at least 440MB/s. Apple also sets a maximum power draw of 4.5W for these recording modes. An external drive can suit a specific ProRes workflow, but it does not increase built-in iPhone capacity or replace it for ordinary use. See Apple’s ProRes support details and confirm the exact iPhone and drive compatibility.

Compare the capacities offered for your exact model

Capacity choices vary by model. For example, Apple’s iPhone 17 technical specifications list 256GB and 512GB; that does not mean every iPhone has those same options. Apple’s ProRes information discusses 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB categories in its recording-capability details, but check the configuration choices for the particular model you intend to buy.

Decision factor What to check
Current usage Used space, storage categories and largest apps in Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
Expected changes Whether photo and video capture, app use or offline downloads will increase before your next upgrade.
Local access Which files and media you need when offline or away from reliable internet.
Cloud reliance Whether iCloud Photos and Optimize iPhone Storage fit your needs, including available iCloud capacity and access to originals.
Video workflow Whether you record ProRes, and whether the model and any external-drive setup support the recording mode you use.
Price The actual price difference between capacities for your model, market and purchase date; it varies and should be checked at purchase.

Make the choice

  1. Check used space and the largest storage users on your current iPhone.
  2. Identify what you expect to add or keep locally: photos, video, apps, downloads and files.
  3. Decide how much you will rely on cloud storage, while treating it as separate from built-in capacity.
  4. If you record ProRes, account for its larger files and free-space requirement; consider external recording only if your model and workflow support it.
  5. Compare only the capacities and prices currently offered for the exact model and region you are buying.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
