Clean hiking boots after muddy or gritty outings, let them dry slowly at room temperature, and renew water repellency when water stops beading and repeatedly soaks into the outer material. Use products made for your boot’s materials and follow its care label: full-grain leather, suede, nubuck, fabric and waterproof-membrane boots do not all take the same treatment.
How often should you clean and waterproof hiking boots?
Brush off dirt after a hike or clean the boots the following day. Grit can wear at leather and fabric as the boot flexes, while drying mud can draw moisture from leather. Many new boots arrive with factory-applied durable water repellent (DWR), so reproofing is not automatically needed on a calendar schedule.

Check the outer material instead: if water still beads, cleaning may be enough. If water repeatedly soaks into the upper, consider renewing its water repellency with a product compatible with the boot. Nikwax advises reapplying as necessary or after severe conditions, not on a fixed universal schedule (Nikwax Fabric & Leather Proof).

How to clean hiking boots
- Remove laces and insoles. Brush loose dust, dried mud and grit from the uppers with a soft brush. Clean the outsole and remove trapped pebbles; this helps maintain traction and avoids carrying invasive material between hiking areas.
- Wash the uppers gently. Use running water and a footwear cleaner suitable for the boot materials. REI also lists saddle soap or a mild dish-soap solution as options, but cautions against bar soaps and detergents that may contain additives harmful to leather or membranes. Rinse thoroughly.
- Clean the insoles separately. Keep them out of the boots while the footwear dries.
Do not put hiking boots in a washing machine. For detailed cleaning guidance, see REI Co-op’s “How to Clean Hiking Boots”; its care guidance states, “Do not use a heat source.”

Choose care products for the boot material
| Boot material or feature | Care approach | What to avoid or check |
|---|---|---|
| Full-grain leather | Clean it; use a compatible leather conditioner selectively if it looks dry or cracked. Renew water repellency when water repeatedly soaks in. | Over-conditioning can soften the boot and reduce support. REI warns that mink oil and similar industrial boot oils can over-soften the dry-tanned leather used in hiking footwear. |
| Suede or nubuck | Clean with products suitable for rough leather and use compatible water-repellent treatment when needed. | Do not default to smooth-leather conditioning products. |
| Fabric/leather combination | Choose products explicitly labeled for the combination and follow their application directions. Nikwax lists Fabric & Leather Proof for fabric, leather or combination footwear. | Check the boot maker’s instructions and any membrane guidance before applying treatment. |
| Waterproof/breathable membrane | Clean membrane areas. | REI says membrane areas do not need treatment. An older Nikwax Q&A recommends waterproofing membrane boots, so follow the boot maker’s specific care directions rather than treating every construction alike. Exterior leather or fabric may have separate care needs. |
Compare products by material compatibility, membrane and boot-maker guidance, and whether the instructions call for application to wet or dry boots. Wax residue can prevent new sole adhesive from bonding, so avoid wax if future resoling matters. A treatment restores water repellency on compatible outer materials; it does not repair a damaged waterproof membrane.
How to waterproof hiking boots
- Start with clean boots. Dirt can interfere with care products. Clean and rinse the footwear first.
- Check the label and boot-maker instructions. Confirm the treatment is suitable for the leather, fabric or combination, and check whether the boot has a membrane.
- Apply the treatment as directed. Some products call for damp boots. REI says leather should be thoroughly wet through its thickness before applying treatment; simply running water over it may not be enough. Product methods vary, so follow the particular label. REI advises cleaning rather than treating membrane areas.
- Let the boots dry fully and slowly. Follow the treatment’s drying directions and keep the boots away from direct heat.
Nikwax Fabric & Leather Proof is one example of a treatment labeled for fabric, leather and combination footwear; it is not a universal choice for every boot.

Dry and store boots without damaging them
Remove the insoles and air-dry boots at normal room temperature in a low-humidity place. Avoid fireplaces, campfires, wood stoves, radiators and heaters: direct heat can weaken adhesives and age leather. To help draw out moisture, use a fan or loosely stuff the boots with newspaper, replacing it when damp.

- 12 percent silicone formula creates durable, long lasting waterproof bond to repel water, dirt and oil
- Aerosol can offers easy application
- Ideal for use on hiking or work boots, tents, camping and outdoor gear
- Not recommended for breathable technical fibers (such as gore tex) or athletic shoes, as silicone could discolor or diminish performance functions
When to get repairs instead of applying more product
A gouge through the leather warrants attention from a professional cobbler. Household glue may temporarily patch superficial damage, but it can degrade leather. If the waterproof membrane is damaged, adding a water-repellent treatment to the outside is not a repair.
