For most people using an iPad Pro for apps, documents, streaming and a modest amount of offline content, 256GB is a reasonable starting point. Choose 512GB if you regularly keep more media and creative files on the iPad; consider 1TB or 2TB for large local libraries or sustained video work. One important exception: the 256GB M5 model records ProRes at 1080p, while the larger capacities support up to 4K at 30 fps.
Which storage capacities are available on the M5 iPad Pro?
Apple offers the 11-inch and 13-inch M5 iPad Pro in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB configurations. Storage is not the only difference between the lower and higher tiers: the 256GB and 512GB models have 12GB of unified memory and a 9-core CPU, while the 1TB and 2TB models have 16GB of unified memory and a 10-core CPU, according to Apple’s technical specifications.

Built-in storage holds apps, downloads and files. Unified memory is a separate hardware resource used while apps run. The higher-memory configuration may matter for workflows that benefit from it, but the published specifications do not establish that storage capacity alone makes an app run faster.

How much iPad Pro storage do you need?
256GB: for everyday use and a lighter offline collection
Choose 256GB if your typical use is apps, documents, streaming and a limited amount of media or other content kept on the device. It is the entry point, not a guarantee of a particular number of photos, games or video hours; actual space depends on the files and apps you use.

If you intend to record ProRes video on the iPad, account for the tier-specific limit: Apple lists ProRes recording up to 4K at 30 fps for the M5 lineup, except the 256GB model, which records ProRes at 1080p at 30 fps.
512GB: for more downloads and creative files
Consider 512GB if you often download shows, games, reference material or creative assets and would rather manage storage less often. This is a practical workload-based recommendation, not a promise about how many items the capacity will hold.

1TB: for substantial projects or the higher-memory configuration
1TB is worth considering if you keep sizable creative projects or media libraries on the iPad. It also comes with 16GB of unified memory and a 10-core CPU on M5, compared with 12GB and a 9-core CPU in the 256GB and 512GB configurations.

2TB: for sustained, high-volume local work
Choose 2TB when large files and projects need to remain available on the device, or when local space is a recurring constraint. It shares the 16GB unified-memory and 10-core CPU configuration with the 1TB model. It is not a performance requirement for ordinary tablet use.

What to compare before choosing a tier
- Local files: Think about how much media and project data you want stored on the iPad rather than streamed, downloaded only when needed, or kept elsewhere.
- ProRes recording: If recording ProRes on the iPad matters, the 256GB model’s 1080p-at-30-fps limit may rule it out for your intended recording workflow.
- Storage management: If you are comfortable managing downloads or moving files, you may have less reason to pay for extra built-in capacity. If you want a larger collection ready offline, more capacity may be convenient.
- Memory configuration: Decide whether the 16GB unified-memory configuration that comes with 1TB and 2TB is relevant to your work. Do not treat the storage number itself as a speed upgrade.
- Exact configuration price: Compare the price for the screen size, Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity, and capacity you actually want. Apple’s U.S. store listing shows the configurations; prices and stock can change.
Can external storage substitute for a larger capacity?
The M5 iPad Pro’s USB-C/Thunderbolt port supports Thunderbolt 3 and USB 4 at up to 40Gb/s, as well as USB 3 at up to 10Gb/s, according to Apple’s specifications. An external drive may be useful to investigate for transferring or archiving files, but those port specifications do not establish that a drive can replace built-in storage for every app or offline-use case. Check that your intended drive and workflow are supported before relying on one instead of onboard capacity.
