European mobile operators did not sell more smartphones in Q2 2026. Their smartphone sales fell 4% year over year, but open-market sales fell 11%, allowing operators to gain share as the overall market contracted. Counterpoint Research links the difference to pressure on lower-priced phones and the operator channel’s more contract-oriented, higher-end mix.
What “benefited carriers” means in this report
The reported benefit is relative resilience in smartphone sales through operators—not an increase in sales volume. Counterpoint Research’s Europe Channel Share Tracker found total smartphone sales down 8% year over year in Q2 2026. Operator-channel sales declined less than that total, while open-market sales suffered a steeper drop.

Because operator sales fell less than open-market sales, the operator channel gained share of smartphone sales. That is a change in the mix of a shrinking market, not evidence that operators sold more phones than a year earlier. Counterpoint’s channel analysis attributes the comparison to its Europe Channel Share Tracker.

Counterpoint points to a low-end collapse amid a memory price crisis. Lower-priced phones were squeezed, and the open market has greater exposure to that end of the market. Operator sales, by contrast, tend to skew higher-end because more purchases are made on contract. Counterpoint Associate Director Jan Stryjak described operator sales as “typically more high-end than through the open market, as more are purchased on a contract.”

The report excerpt does not quantify the decline in low-end phones or define a price cutoff for “budget.” The supported explanation is about channel mix: when lower-end demand weakens, a channel with relatively greater exposure to higher-end, contract purchases can decline less.
Sales and shipments are different measures
A separate Counterpoint report says European smartphone shipments reached 35 million units in Q2 2026, down 10% year over year and the lowest second-quarter tally since Q2 2023. That shipment figure is not the same measure as the channel-sales figures above: the latter compare sales through operators and the open market, while the former tracks shipments into the market. The two percentages should not be combined or treated as a contradiction.

Counterpoint’s shipment analysis cites component-cost increases, higher device prices, fewer promotions as manufacturers sought to protect margins, and weaker consumer demand as pressures on the market. It also says an uncertain macroeconomic climate, exacerbated by the Iran War and resulting inflation, contributed to consumer hesitation. These are Counterpoint’s explanations, not separately quantified causal estimates. Its Q2 shipment report provides that broader context.

Regional and brand results
Europe’s regions did not move uniformly. Counterpoint says Western Europe performed better than expected, supported by a strong Apple quarter and marginal Samsung growth. Eastern Europe recorded a significant decline as budget segments came under pressure and many Chinese phone makers struggled.

Within the operator channel, Apple overtook Samsung to become the leading brand in Q2 2026. Motorola and vivo were the fastest-growing brands year over year in that channel. The accessible report excerpt does not state their market shares, so these results establish the rankings and direction of growth, not the size of the gap or the brands’ exact shares.

The figures show that operator-channel smartphone sales held up better than open-market sales in Q2 2026. They do not establish that carriers gained service revenue, subscribers, handset margins, or overall profitability. Nor do they show that every operator benefited equally: the reported comparison is for the channel as a whole, not a carrier-by-carrier financial analysis.
