Windows 11 lets every app use its own playback device. Open Start > Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer, find the app under Apps, and select its Output device. You can also adjust that app’s volume and mute state there. The device chosen under Sound > Output remains the general default for applications that follow the system default.

This separation solves common setups such as sending Discord to a headset while Spotify plays through speakers, routing a game to a monitor over HDMI while voice chat stays in headphones, or moving meeting audio to a USB headset without changing every other program. The right endpoint depends on the app’s purpose, your physical connections, latency needs, and whether Windows detects the device reliably.

What does an audio output device mean in Windows?

An audio output device is a playback endpoint to which Windows sends sound. Examples include the speakers built into a laptop, a 3.5 mm headset, a USB headset or USB audio adapter, a monitor connected over HDMI, and a Bluetooth speaker or headset. Windows can expose several of these endpoints at the same time.

The system default is the device selected under Settings > System > Sound > Output. Apps that follow the default use that endpoint. Windows also supports an app-specific choice: an individual program can be assigned a different output in Volume mixer without changing the general default. Microsoft describes this behavior directly: “Apps can use a different output device than the system default.”

Think of the default as your fallback route and the per-app setting as an exception. A laptop’s speakers might remain the default for ordinary alerts, while a meeting app uses a USB headset and a game uses HDMI audio for a television.

How do I assign an output device to an app in Windows 11?

Start playback in the program first, then assign its endpoint in Volume mixer. The app must be active enough for Windows to list it under Apps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Select Volume mixer.
  3. Scroll to Apps and locate the program producing sound.
  4. Open that program’s Output device menu and choose the speakers, headset, monitor, USB adapter, or Bluetooth device you want.
  5. Check the app’s volume slider and speaker icon. Make sure the app is not muted and raise its volume if necessary.
  6. Leave your everyday device selected under Sound > Output for programs that should continue following the system default.

For example, to keep music on desk speakers but send chat to headphones, start both programs, choose the speakers for the music app in its Volume mixer row, and choose the headphones for the chat app’s row. Changing the chat row does not require changing the system-wide output.

What if the app does not appear in Volume mixer?

Play a sound or begin a call so Windows creates an active audio stream, then reopen Volume mixer. If the program still is not listed, close and relaunch it after connecting the desired device. Also check that the application has not selected a disabled or disconnected endpoint in its own audio settings.

How do I set a different app output in Windows 10?

Windows 10 uses the classic Sound controls. Right-click the taskbar volume icon, open Sounds, and use the Playback tab to establish a default device. Then return to Volume mixer and confirm the affected app’s playback device.

  1. Right-click the volume icon on the taskbar.
  2. Select Sounds, then open the Playback tab.
  3. Select the device you want as the general default and choose Set Default.
  4. Close the dialog, open Volume mixer, and inspect the app’s playback-device selection.
  5. Choose the intended endpoint for that app and verify its volume and mute state.

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. The controls may still work on an existing installation, but menu labels and troubleshooting guidance are increasingly centered on Windows 11. If a Windows 10 machine has a device-detection problem, use the manufacturer’s current driver for that computer or audio hardware and consider moving to a supported operating system.

Which output device should each type of app use?

Match the endpoint to what you need to hear, how quickly you need to hear it, and where the hardware is physically connected. The following starting points cover common arrangements; your connected hardware and driver support determine which entries actually appear.

App or activity Usually suitable output Reason to choose it Check before committing
Music or video for a room Desk speakers, television, or monitor over HDMI Shared, full-range listening at the room’s preferred location The display or receiver must have its own speakers or an audio connection onward
Private music or video Wired or Bluetooth headphones Keeps audio from playing through the room speakers Bluetooth can introduce delay; confirm the headset is connected and selected
Voice chat or meetings Headset or USB audio adapter with headphones Reduces feedback and keeps voices close to the listener Confirm the app’s microphone input separately; output selection does not set the microphone
Competitive games Low-latency wired headset or locally connected speakers More immediate monitoring of game events and chat Test latency and whether the game has its own output selector
Console or PC game on a television HDMI display audio Sends game sound along the same cable as the picture Verify that the television or receiver is powered on and exposes an audio endpoint
Accessibility or assistive listening The endpoint positioned for the listener, often a dedicated headset or adapter Places all required audio at the listener’s preferred location Check channel support, connector type, and stable driver detection

There is no universally “best” device. A reliable endpoint with the correct physical connection is more useful than a nominally higher-quality device that disappears, adds unacceptable delay, or has no connected speakers.

How do USB, HDMI, Bluetooth, and 3.5 mm outputs differ?

USB audio and USB audio adapters

A USB headset or USB audio adapter appears to Windows as an additional playback endpoint. That makes it useful when you want a separate route for one app, such as a meeting or game chat, while other programs remain on the computer’s normal speakers. Microsoft’s Windows guidance specifically discusses USB-connected audio devices and per-app output selection.

Before relying on a USB adapter, check its connector, Windows driver support, channel capability, and current product listing. An adapter that provides only stereo output cannot deliver a multichannel signal that the hardware does not support. If Windows sees the adapter but no sound comes out, verify that headphones or speakers are actually connected to the adapter’s output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HDMI audio

HDMI commonly exposes the speakers in a monitor, television, or receiver as a Windows playback endpoint. It is a practical choice for a game or video that you want to hear in the same place as the picture. The display must be on and its audio hardware must be available; a monitor with no speakers may still appear as an endpoint but produce no audible sound.

Bluetooth

Bluetooth is convenient for a cable-free headset or speaker, but latency and connection state matter. A small delay can be distracting in games or while monitoring a live call. Use it when mobility is more important than the lowest possible delay, and switch to a wired or USB route when timing is critical.

3.5 mm analog output

The 3.5 mm jack is often the simplest path for headphones or powered speakers. It generally appears through the computer’s built-in audio hardware. Confirm that the plug is fully inserted and that the jack is the one Windows is driving; some laptops combine headphone and microphone contacts in a single port.

How do I combine a system default with per-app routes?

Choose one dependable device as the default, then override only the apps that need something else. This keeps new or rarely used programs working without additional setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect and power on every device you intend to use.
  2. In Settings > System > Sound > Output, select the endpoint for ordinary use.
  3. Open each special-case program and make sure it is producing audio.
  4. In Volume mixer > Apps, assign a different output only where needed.
  5. Play a short test in every routed app before starting a call, recording, or game.

Suppose the laptop speakers are your default, a USB headset is reserved for meetings, and HDMI drives a television for games. The default remains the laptop speakers. The meeting app receives the USB headset assignment, while the game receives the HDMI assignment. A notification or a newly installed app still follows the laptop speakers unless you give it an exception.

How do I route Discord, Spotify, a game, and a meeting separately?

Use the same Volume mixer process for each program; the important part is deciding which endpoint belongs to each activity before you start.

Discord through a headset and Spotify through speakers

  1. Set the speakers as the general device under Sound > Output.
  2. Start Spotify and play a track. In Volume mixer, leave Spotify on the speakers or explicitly select them.
  3. Start Discord and join a voice channel so it appears under Apps.
  4. Choose the headset as Discord’s Output device, then check its app volume.
  5. Speak and play a short track to confirm that voice is in the headset and music is in the speakers.

Game audio through HDMI and chat through headphones

  1. Turn on the HDMI-connected monitor or television and select it under Sound > Output if you want it to be the default for the game.
  2. Launch the game and assign its app row to the HDMI endpoint.
  3. Launch the chat application and assign its row to the headphones.
  4. Test both routes independently. If the game has an in-game output menu, ensure it is not forcing a different endpoint.

Meeting audio through a USB headset while alerts stay on speakers

  1. Keep the speakers as the system default.
  2. Connect the USB headset or adapter and wait for Windows to list it.
  3. Start the meeting application, then choose the USB endpoint for that app in Volume mixer.
  4. Use the meeting application’s own microphone control to select the desired input; Windows output routing does not automatically choose a microphone.

Why is one app using the wrong output device?

Most wrong-route cases come from an app-specific selection, a muted app, or a default device that changed after hardware was connected. Work through these checks in order so you do not change more settings than necessary.

Check the app row first

  • Open Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer.
  • Under Apps, find the program.
  • Confirm its Output device is the endpoint you expect.
  • Make sure the app is not muted and raise its individual volume.

Check the system default

If several programs are wrong, select the intended device under Sound > Output. For the classic control panel, open More sound settings > Playback, select the device, and set it as the default playback device. This affects apps that follow the default, not apps with a deliberate per-app override.

Check the physical path

  • Confirm headphones or powered speakers are plugged into the selected endpoint.
  • For HDMI, make sure the display or receiver is powered on and set to the relevant input.
  • For Bluetooth, verify that the device is connected rather than merely paired.
  • For USB, try a direct port and confirm the adapter or headset is visible in Windows.

Check the application’s own audio menu

Some games, meeting tools, media players, and chat programs provide their own output selector. If that selector names a device, set it consistently with the Windows assignment. An in-app choice can take precedence over what you expect from the operating-system mixer, so test the program after changing either location.

What should I do about crackling, distortion, or low-quality sound?

First isolate whether the problem follows the app or the device. Play audio from a second program on the same endpoint. If both programs sound distorted, treat it as a device, format, enhancement, or driver issue rather than an app-routing issue.

  1. Open the sound settings for the selected output.
  2. Turn off audio enhancements.
  3. Test another default format.
  4. Play the same material again at a moderate volume.
  5. If the problem remains, test a different endpoint, such as the built-in speakers versus the USB adapter.

Changing the format and disabling enhancements are diagnostic steps, not guarantees of a particular quality level. Keep the setting that produces clean, stable playback on the hardware you actually use.

How do I restore an audio device that is missing?

A missing endpoint usually indicates that Windows has disabled the device, hidden it, failed to detect the hardware, or lacks a suitable driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. If the audio device is listed, enable it when the option is available.
  3. Choose View > Show hidden devices to reveal entries that are not currently active.
  4. Choose Action > Scan for hardware changes.
  5. Install the latest driver from the PC or audio-device manufacturer.
  6. Restart Windows, reconnect the hardware, and check Sound > Output and Volume mixer again.

Use a driver intended for your exact computer or audio device. A generic package may not expose all channels or controls, and installing a driver for a different model can leave the endpoint unstable.

Can restarting Windows audio services fix routing?

Yes. If the device is present but applications remain silent or refuse to switch, restart the two Windows audio services that coordinate playback endpoints.

  2. Locate Windows Audio and restart it.
  3. Locate Windows Audio Endpoint Builder and restart it.
  4. Reopen the affected application and test its output assignment.

Restarting these services can clear a stuck endpoint without changing your hardware. If the device disappears again after a reboot, return to Device Manager and the manufacturer driver checks rather than repeatedly changing app sliders.

How can I verify a multi-device setup before a call or game?

A short test prevents the most disruptive failures. Run this checklist whenever you add a device, update a driver, or move a cable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Connect every endpoint and confirm that Windows lists it.
  • Set the general-purpose device under Sound > Output.
  • Start each special-case app so it appears under Apps.
  • Confirm each app’s output menu, mute state, and volume.
  • Play a distinctive sound in each app one at a time.
  • For voice software, check the microphone separately and make a brief test recording or call.
  • For HDMI, verify the display’s own volume and input selection.
  • For Bluetooth, check connection status and listen for timing delay.
  • For USB, confirm the adapter or headset is fully seated and remains visible after reconnecting.

What are the limits of per-app output selection?

Per-app routing controls where Windows sends a program’s playback stream; it does not repair a disconnected speaker, create hardware channels that the endpoint does not support, or choose a microphone input automatically. It also cannot make a display with no speakers produce sound.

Some applications open their own audio session or provide an internal output setting. When Windows and the app disagree, use the app’s documented selector and then retest the Windows Volume mixer row. Hardware changes can also invalidate a route: unplugging a USB adapter, powering off an HDMI display, or disconnecting Bluetooth removes the endpoint or leaves the app temporarily without sound.

For dependable everyday use, keep one well-tested device as the default and reserve per-app assignments for clear cases such as private chat, television audio, or a dedicated USB adapter. That arrangement minimizes surprises while preserving the flexibility to split audio whenever your workflow requires it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I route a browser tab to a different device without moving all browser audio?

Windows assigns output at the app level, so separate tabs inside one browser generally share that browser’s Windows audio session. To split them, use separate browser instances or an application that exposes its own per-tab routing controls, then verify which process appears in Volume mixer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my app still use the old device after I reconnect my headset?

The program may have kept an app-specific endpoint or selected a device internally. Close and reopen the program after reconnecting the headset, then inspect both its in-app audio menu and its row under Volume mixer.

Does per-app output also change the microphone used for calls?

No. The Output device controls playback only. Choose the microphone separately in the calling application or in Windows input settings, and make a short test recording before a live meeting.

Can a monitor carry sound over HDMI if it has no built-in speakers?

Windows may still list the HDMI endpoint, but there will be nothing to hear unless the monitor has speakers or passes audio to connected equipment. Select the display only when that physical audio path is present and powered.
