Choose memory from the complete laptop specification, not from the Ryzen processor name alone. AMD’s Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 pairs a Radeon 890M integrated GPU (AMD lists 16 graphics cores, often described in laptop listings as 16 CUs) with two memory channels and support for DDR5 or LPDDR5X. For a laptop with this integrated graphics, dual-channel operation and adequate capacity matter because the GPU shares system memory with the CPU. The practical buying decision is usually 32 GB when offered, with the fastest memory the laptop maker officially supports; select 16 GB only for light workloads, and choose a replaceable DDR5 model only after confirming the exact service manual and module limits.
Processor-level figures are ceilings, not promises about a particular chassis. AMD lists DDR5-5600 and LPDDR5X-8000 under its stated 2x2R condition and a processor maximum of 256 GB, while ASUS’s 2024 Zenbook S 16 guide lists up to 32 GB of LPDDR5X-7500. Those differences show why the model-specific configuration, soldering, cooling and firmware determine what you actually receive.

What does a 16-CU Radeon 890M mean for laptop memory?
AMD identifies the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370’s integrated graphics as Radeon 890M with 16 graphics cores. Retail descriptions may call the same design 16 compute units, but the important buying implication is that it is an integrated GPU: it normally draws graphics data from system RAM rather than from dedicated VRAM. CPU and GPU activity therefore compete for the laptop’s memory bandwidth and capacity.
AMD lists two memory channels for the HX 370. A correctly populated two-channel design gives the memory controller two paths to move data, which is particularly relevant when an integrated GPU is rendering games, accelerating video or driving a high-resolution display. It does not turn the laptop into a discrete-GPU system, and there is no controlled result in the available specifications that supports a universal percentage gain for one speed or channel arrangement. Treat dual-channel as a platform requirement to verify, not as a guaranteed benchmark number.

Dual-channel is not the same as dual-rank
Channel count describes independent memory channels in the processor. Rank describes how memory chips are organized within a module or package. AMD’s published speed ceilings include a 2x2R condition; that notation is a processor qualification and should not be read as proof that a laptop has two removable modules or two dual-rank sticks. The manufacturer’s service documentation is the authority for the actual topology.
How much RAM should you choose?
Capacity determines how much of your work can remain in memory before the operating system starts compressing data or moving it to storage. With an integrated GPU, the graphics workload also consumes part of the installed pool, so a configuration that feels adequate for office work can become restrictive when you run a game, a browser with many tabs and a creative application together.
16 GB
Use 16 GB when the laptop is primarily for documents, web applications, messaging, streaming and occasional light photo work, and when the price or weight of a larger configuration is a priority. Check whether the graphics firmware reserves a fixed portion for the GPU; the usable amount shown by the operating system will be lower than the physical total. If the 16 GB is soldered, you cannot count on adding more later.
32 GB
For a new HX 370 laptop, 32 GB is the safer all-purpose choice for development tools, large browser sessions, photo or video projects, virtual machines and modern games using the Radeon 890M. It also gives the integrated GPU more room without forcing the system to reclaim application memory as quickly. ASUS lists up to 32 GB of LPDDR5X-7500 in its 2024 Zenbook S 16 guide, illustrating a real system configuration rather than a universal HX 370 limit.
More than 32 GB
Consider a higher-capacity option only when the laptop maker explicitly offers it and your workload uses it: large datasets, several virtual machines, professional media timelines or substantial software builds. AMD’s processor specification lists a 256 GB maximum, but that is a CPU-level maximum, not evidence that any particular laptop has the sockets, firmware support, thermal design or board wiring to reach it. Do not infer a laptop’s capacity from that number.

Is dual-channel memory important for Radeon 890M graphics?
Yes, verify it whenever the Radeon 890M is expected to do meaningful graphics work. Because the GPU shares system memory, a one-channel arrangement can reduce the data path available to graphics and the CPU at the same time. A two-channel implementation is the sensible target, but the exact effect depends on the laptop’s memory speed, power limits, cooling, display resolution and game or application; the available AMD material does not establish a single performance uplift.

How to verify the channel arrangement
- Read the manufacturer’s full configuration page for the exact model and regional part number, looking for two-channel operation or a dual-channel memory specification.
- For removable memory, inspect the service manual for the number of SO-DIMM sockets and whether both must be populated as a matched pair.
- After purchase, use the operating system’s hardware information or a reputable system-information utility to confirm the reported channel mode. A utility’s wording can vary, so compare it with the service manual rather than relying on one label.
Do not assume that two capacity numbers in a shop listing mean two channels. A single soldered package can be wired across two channels, while two removable modules can be installed in a way that is not supported as a matched configuration.
Should you choose DDR5 or LPDDR5X?
AMD lists both DDR5 and LPDDR5X as supported memory types for the HX 370. The choice is made by the laptop design: DDR5 generally appears as replaceable SO-DIMMs, while LPDDR5X is commonly soldered for thin systems. The sources do not provide a controlled comparison of otherwise identical laptops, so do not promise a specific gaming or application advantage solely from the memory type.
| Memory type | HX 370 processor specification | What to check in the laptop | Upgrade consequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| DDR5 | Up to DDR5-5600 under AMD’s stated 2x2R condition | Documented SO-DIMM sockets, supported module capacity and the maker’s validated speed | Replaceable only if the exact chassis provides accessible sockets and permits upgrades |
| LPDDR5X | Up to LPDDR5X-8000 under AMD’s stated 2x2R condition | Soldered package capacity and the configured speed listed for that model | Normally selected at purchase; assume no user upgrade unless the manufacturer explicitly says otherwise |
LPDDR5X and DDR5 labels also describe different physical implementations, not interchangeable modules. You cannot buy an LPDDR5X module to add to a DDR5 SO-DIMM laptop, or vice versa. The laptop’s board and firmware decide what is electrically and mechanically possible.
What do DDR5-5600 and LPDDR5X-8000 actually tell you?
They are processor-level maximum memory speeds published by AMD for the HX 370, with the listed 2x2R qualification. They are useful when checking whether a laptop’s advertised speed is within the processor’s specification, but they are not a guarantee that every laptop will run at those rates. A manufacturer may select a lower speed to meet power, thermal, board-layout or validation targets.

Compare the complete laptop entry rather than copying the processor ceiling into a buying decision. ASUS’s 2024 Zenbook S 16 guide specifies up to 32 GB of LPDDR5X-7500, which is below AMD’s LPDDR5X-8000 processor figure. That is a normal example of a system implementation being narrower than the CPU specification, not evidence of a defect.
When a listing shows a lower speed
- Confirm whether the number is the memory’s rated data rate or a software utility’s current operating rate.
- Check whether the maker lists one speed for every capacity or a lower speed for the largest configuration.
- Look for a BIOS or firmware note that changes supported speeds; do not assume a future update will raise a soldered design to the processor maximum.
Can you upgrade RAM in a Ryzen AI laptop?
Sometimes, but the HX 370 specification cannot answer that question. Upgradeability is a property of the complete laptop: the motherboard, physical access panel, sockets, firmware and the manufacturer’s stated capacity limit.
Soldered LPDDR5X
In a soldered design, memory chips are attached to the motherboard. Treat the capacity selected at purchase as permanent unless the manufacturer documents a service replacement, which is uncommon for ordinary user upgrades. Do not buy a DDR5 kit for a laptop that lists LPDDR5X; there is no compatible socket to install it.
Replaceable DDR5 SO-DIMMs
A laptop with user-accessible DDR5 SO-DIMM sockets may allow an upgrade, but only within its documented limits. The phrase “DDR5 SO-DIMM laptop RAM kit” describes a product category, not a universal match for every Ryzen AI model. Physical fit, module density, rank, voltage, firmware validation and maximum capacity all matter.
How to check before buying
- Write down the complete model number, including screen size, year, region and any suffix printed on the retailer or manufacturer page.
- Open the manufacturer’s current specifications and record the installed capacity, memory type, listed speed and maximum capacity for that exact configuration.
- Download the service or maintenance manual. Confirm whether the memory is soldered, how many SO-DIMM sockets exist, and whether access requires removing a sealed or warranty-sensitive panel.
- Check the manual’s replacement procedure and module specifications. Note any requirement for two matched modules, a per-slot capacity limit or a maximum total that is lower than the processor’s 256 GB figure.
- Only then select a compatible pair or replacement module. Match the documented type and speed; do not mix LPDDR5X with DDR5 or rely on a generic HX 370 compatibility claim.
- After installation, enter the firmware setup or the operating system and confirm the full capacity and channel mode. Run a memory diagnostic before returning the old modules or closing a support case.
What should you compare when two Ryzen AI laptops look similar?
Put the memory details beside the rest of the system configuration. Two laptops can use the same HX 370 and Radeon 890M yet offer different capacities, speeds, channel wiring and upgrade paths.

| Comparison point | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Memory type | Does the model use DDR5 SO-DIMMs or soldered LPDDR5X? |
| Configured speed | What speed does the manufacturer document for this exact capacity, and is it below the processor ceiling? |
| Installed capacity | Is the offered configuration 16 GB, 32 GB or another documented amount, and how much will graphics reserve? |
| Channel operation | Does the specification or service manual confirm two-channel operation? |
| Upgrade path | Are there accessible sockets, and what total and per-slot limits does the manual state? |
| Complete implementation | What are the cooling, power limits, display resolution and other system choices that can influence real performance? |
The last row matters because memory is not the only variable. The collected specifications do not isolate the effects of chassis power, thermal design or other components, so a faster memory label alone cannot predict how two complete laptops will perform.
Which configuration is the safest buying choice?
Use this decision sequence when the manufacturer offers several memory configurations.
- Start with capacity. Choose 32 GB if you expect sustained multitasking, development, creative work, virtual machines or gaming. Choose 16 GB only when your workload is light and the model is otherwise a good fit.
- Confirm two-channel operation. Give preference to a documented two-channel design for the Radeon 890M, especially if graphics performance is important.
- Check the configured speed. Compare the laptop’s listed DDR5 or LPDDR5X rate with AMD’s processor-level ceiling, while accepting that the laptop may intentionally run lower.
- Decide whether permanence is acceptable. Select soldered LPDDR5X at the capacity you will need for the laptop’s useful life. Select replaceable DDR5 only when the service documentation confirms a practical upgrade path.
- Evaluate the whole machine. Compare display, cooling, battery and power settings alongside memory. The same processor and graphics designation does not make two chassis identical.
What mistakes cause RAM problems on these laptops?
Assuming the 256 GB figure applies to the laptop
AMD’s 256 GB number is the processor’s listed maximum memory. It does not establish that a thin laptop has the sockets, board layout or firmware to support that amount. Use the laptop maker’s maximum for a purchase or upgrade decision.
Buying a kit before checking the service manual
A generic DDR5 kit can be physically incompatible, unsupported at its advertised speed or pointless in a soldered design. Confirm the exact model and module requirements first.
Treating a speed ceiling as a guaranteed operating speed
DDR5-5600 and LPDDR5X-8000 are AMD’s processor-level maxima under the stated condition. A laptop may ship with a lower documented rate, such as the Zenbook S 16 example’s LPDDR5X-7500.

Calling any two modules dual-channel without verification
Channel mode depends on the platform’s wiring and firmware. Confirm it in the manual and after installation rather than inferring it from the number of sticks in a listing.
Expecting a universal performance percentage
Memory effects vary with the application, resolution, power profile and thermal limits. No controlled benchmark in the cited specifications quantifies a universal uplift for a particular speed or dual-channel arrangement, so use documented configuration data rather than a promised percentage.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does adding RAM increase the Radeon 890M’s dedicated VRAM?
No. The Radeon 890M is integrated graphics and uses a portion of shared system memory rather than gaining a separate physical VRAM module. Firmware may reserve or dynamically allocate memory, so the amount shown as graphics memory can differ from the laptop’s installed total.
Can I mix two different DDR5 SO-DIMM brands in a Ryzen AI laptop?
The processor name alone cannot guarantee a mixed kit will work. Check the laptop manual for supported density, rank and speed, and use a matched pair when the manufacturer specifies one; mixed modules may fall back to a lower speed or fail validation.
Will a BIOS update make soldered LPDDR5X upgradeable?
No firmware update can add a missing SO-DIMM socket or change chips soldered to the motherboard. An update might alter supported operating speeds or capacity reporting, but physical upgradeability remains a chassis-design feature.
Why does Windows show less usable RAM than the amount I purchased?
Part of physical memory is reserved for firmware, devices and the integrated GPU. The reserved amount varies by laptop and settings, so compare the physical total in system information with the usable figure rather than treating the difference as a failed module.
Is LPDDR5X-7500 automatically slower in games than DDR5-5600?
The labels are not a complete performance test. Laptop power limits, timings, channel wiring, cooling and the game itself also affect results, and the available specifications do not provide a controlled comparison between otherwise identical systems.
