Choose PHP hosting by proving compatibility and recoverability before comparing price. Confirm the PHP branch your application supports, its database engine and version, required extensions, per-site memory and process limits, HTTPS automation, account isolation, backups, cache behavior, and the tools your team needs to operate the site. For a current WordPress installation, that means PHP 8.3 or newer, MariaDB 10.11 or newer or MySQL 8.0 or newer, and HTTPS; production sites should use PHP 8.4 or later when the application is compatible. A low-cost plan that cannot run the right extensions, restore a database, or isolate accounts is not a bargain.

What should you verify before choosing a PHP host?

Start with a written compatibility sheet for the application, then make the host answer every line. Hosting is suitable only when the server software, PHP build, extensions, limits, and database match what the application needs.

Build an application requirements sheet

  • PHP branch: Record the minimum, maximum, and preferred versions, including whether any plugins or framework components lag behind the latest branch.
  • Database: Name the engine (such as MySQL or MariaDB), supported version range, character-set requirements, and whether remote connections are needed.
  • Extensions: List every required PHP extension rather than assuming a standard image includes it.
  • Limits: Capture memory_limit, maximum execution time, upload size, input variables, worker or process limits, and cron frequency where the application depends on them.
  • Operations: Decide whether you need SSH, Git or another deployment method, staging, scheduled jobs, access logs, error logs, and a defined support escalation path.

Ask the provider for these values in writing for the exact plan and region you would buy. A generic statement that “PHP is supported” does not establish a usable configuration.

Which PHP version should your hosting support?

Prefer a maintained branch and keep a tested upgrade path. The WordPress Hosting Handbook recommends PHP 8.4 or later for production when the application is compatible; PHP 8.3 moved to security-only support on 31 December 2025, and PHP 8.2 reaches end of life on 31 December 2026.

PHP lifecycle dates to use in a buying decision

PHP branch Lifecycle information What to ask the host
PHP 8.5 End of life: 31 December 2029 Can it be selected now, and is your application certified for it?
PHP 8.4 End of life: 31 December 2028; recommended for production by the WordPress Hosting Handbook when compatible Is 8.4 available as a normal production option, and how are security updates applied?
PHP 8.3 Security-only support began 31 December 2025; end of life: 31 December 2027 Is it available temporarily for compatibility, and what is the migration deadline?
PHP 8.2 End of life: 31 December 2026 Can you move the site to a maintained branch before this date?

Plan an upgrade instead of freezing an old version

A host should let you select a branch per site, test a new branch in staging, and change back quickly if a plugin or extension fails. The WordPress Hosting Handbook states: “Hosts should test their full stack before making a new PHP version the default for production environments.” Ask whether the provider tests its control panel, web server, extensions, image libraries, and common database drivers together, not merely whether the PHP binary starts.

Do not interpret a long list of selectable versions as a security feature. An obsolete branch may remain available for legacy applications while receiving no upstream security fixes. Require the provider to identify each branch’s security-support status and its removal or migration policy.

How much PHP memory and processing capacity do you need?

Use the application’s measured peak demand rather than the plan’s marketing label. The WordPress Hosting Handbook gives 128M as a minimum memory_limit, 256M as a recommended default, and 512M or more for resource-intensive sites.

PHP memory limit Use indicated by the handbook Buying implication
128M Minimum Suitable only when the application and extensions stay below this ceiling under real requests.
256M Recommended default A sensible baseline for a typical production site, provided CPU and process limits are also adequate.
512M or more Resource-intensive sites Consider for large catalogs, heavy import jobs, visual builders, analytics, or media processing; confirm the host will actually assign the memory per process or site as advertised.

Read the limits behind “unlimited” wording

Request the per-site number of PHP workers or processes, CPU allocation, concurrent connections, entry processes, I/O limits, and maximum process duration. A high memory limit cannot compensate for a one-worker ceiling or aggressive CPU throttling. Ask whether limits are hard caps, burstable allowances, or shared pools that can be reduced during contention.

Check both web and command-line PHP settings if you run imports, queues, or scheduled tasks. A host can expose one memory limit to web requests and another to CLI jobs. Obtain the values for the exact runtime used by your deployment and cron configuration.

Which database engines, versions, and PHP extensions are required?

Match the database and extension set to the application’s documented requirements, then verify that the host enables them on your plan. For WordPress, current requirements are PHP 8.3 or greater, MariaDB 10.11 or greater or MySQL 8.0 or greater, and HTTPS.

Confirm the database precisely

  • Ask whether the plan provides MySQL 8.0 or newer, MariaDB 10.11 or newer, or another engine your application explicitly supports.
  • Check permitted database count, storage limits, connection limits, transaction support, and whether databases are on the same host or a separate service.
  • Ask how database upgrades are announced, tested, and rolled back. An engine upgrade can change query behavior even when PHP stays unchanged.
  • Verify that backups include database contents, not only uploaded files, and that you can restore a single database without replacing unrelated sites.

Verify extensions instead of guessing

Common requirements include curl, dom, fileinfo, hash, intl, mbstring, openssl, xml, and zip. Treat this as a checklist, not a universal bundle: your framework, payment integration, image workflow, or localization library may require additional modules.

Ask whether extensions are enabled for both the selected PHP version and the command-line binary. Also ask who can enable or update an extension, how quickly that request is handled, and whether a version change silently removes modules. A staging test that exercises login, uploads, mail, scheduled jobs, and an actual database migration catches missing modules earlier than a homepage check.

Is shared PHP hosting secure enough?

Shared hosting can be secure for a PHP site when the provider isolates accounts, patches the platform, limits cross-account access, and supplies recovery controls. It is not secure merely because the server has a firewall or a control panel.

Ask how accounts are isolated

WordPress security guidance recommends running PHP applications with the account’s username rather than a shared server username. Ask the host to explain the mechanism it uses to prevent one customer’s PHP process from reading another customer’s files, environment variables, sockets, or temporary data. Request written details about filesystem permissions, process identity, container or kernel boundaries, and how newly created files inherit ownership.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clarify who patches the operating system, web server, PHP runtime, control panel, and supplied extensions. Ask how malware reports are investigated, whether compromised accounts can be quarantined without taking down every customer, and what logs are retained for an incident. If the answer is only “we monitor security,” ask for the escalation path and notification process.

Know when isolation is insufficient

A busy or high-value application may need a dedicated virtual machine or managed server if it requires custom system packages, unusual PHP extensions, private networking, strict compliance controls, or predictable CPU. Moving away from shared hosting does not remove patching and backup duties unless the service explicitly includes them; it changes who controls the boundary.

What HTTPS and TLS features should a PHP host provide?

HTTPS is a baseline requirement, not an optional add-on. WordPress security guidance says HTTPS helps protect logins and visitor traffic, so the host should issue and renew certificates automatically and keep modern TLS settings maintained.

  • Automatic issuance and renewal: Confirm the certificate covers the exact domains and renews without a manual ticket.
  • HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect: Ask whether the redirect is enabled per site and whether it can be tested before DNS changes.
  • Mixed-content handling: Verify that the platform does not leave administrative pages or asset URLs on plain HTTP after a certificate is installed.
  • Modern protocol policy: Ask who disables obsolete protocols and ciphers, and how changes are announced.
  • Renewal failure recovery: Find out how you are notified if domain validation fails and whether a backup certificate or rapid reissue process exists.

Do not confuse a certificate with complete transport security. Your application still needs secure cookies, correct proxy settings, updated dependencies, and an administrative workflow that never sends credentials over an unencrypted connection.

How should backups and restores work for PHP sites?

Choose a host that can explain backup frequency, retention, storage separation, restore procedure, and coverage for both files and databases. Official guidance calls for reliable backup and recovery methods but does not prescribe one universal retention period, so you must set a recovery objective that fits the site.

Questions that expose a weak backup service

  • How often are files and databases captured, and are database snapshots coordinated with file snapshots?
  • Are copies stored on a separate system or location so a server failure or ransomware event cannot erase every copy?
  • How long are daily, weekly, and monthly versions retained, and can retention be changed for a specific site?
  • Can you restore to a new directory or staging environment first, or does a restore overwrite the live site immediately?
  • Who can start a restore, how long does a typical restore take, and what happens when a restore job fails?
  • When was the last successful test restore, and can the provider show that both files and database records were recovered?

Keep an independent copy for data you cannot recreate. A host’s snapshot is valuable, but it is still inside the provider’s operational and account-access boundary. Document the restore steps and the credentials required before an outage occurs.

Can caching create security or correctness problems?

Caching can reduce response time and origin load, but an incorrect cache can expose one visitor’s data to another or serve the wrong files. Treat cache scope and purge behavior as security controls, not merely performance settings.

What to verify before enabling a cache

  • Which layers cache responses: web server, reverse proxy, application plugin, object cache, or a separate edge service?
  • How are authenticated pages, carts, account areas, API responses, and other personalized requests excluded?
  • Is the cache isolated per account and domain, with no possibility of one site reading another site’s objects?
  • Can an administrator purge one URL, one site, or the entire cache, and is the purge action logged?
  • What happens after a deployment or rollback, and how quickly can stale files be removed?

Test as an anonymous visitor and an authenticated user after every cache change. Verify that user-specific names, order data, administrative screens, and error pages never appear in a shared response. Keep a documented rollback switch so a faulty cache rule can be disabled without waiting for support.

Do you need SSH, staging, cron, and deployment tools?

SSH and staging are not mandatory for every brochure site, but they sharply reduce risk when you update code, run migrations, or troubleshoot production. Select them when your workflow needs repeatable deployments rather than browser-only file edits.

SSH and shell access

Ask whether SSH is included, which authentication methods are allowed, whether shell users are jailed to the account, and whether command-line PHP uses the same version and extensions as web requests. Confirm that keys can be revoked individually and that shell activity is logged. If SSH is unavailable, ask how you export files, run a database migration, execute scheduled jobs, and retrieve logs without a support ticket.

Staging and deployment

A useful staging environment can clone files and a database, protect the clone from search indexing, and promote tested changes with a rollback path. Ask whether sensitive production data is masked, whether staging receives the same PHP branch and extensions, and whether a deployment records what changed. A staging copy that runs a different runtime can create false confidence.

Cron, logs, and observability

Verify that scheduled tasks can run at the required interval and that failures are visible. Request access to web-server access logs, PHP error logs, slow-request information, and resource-usage history. Logs should have a stated retention period and a method for downloading them before an incident rotates them away.

Should you choose managed or self-managed PHP hosting?

Managed hosting trades some control for provider responsibility; self-managed hosting provides deeper control but leaves patching, hardening, monitoring, and recovery to you. Choose according to the skills and response time you can sustain, not the label on the plan.

Decision area Managed approach Self-managed approach
PHP and OS patching Provider schedules and applies patches, with a documented testing and notification policy. You select maintenance windows, test updates, and handle failed upgrades.
Extensions and system packages Use the provider’s supported catalog and request additions through its process. Install and secure the packages yourself, subject to the virtual machine or server’s limits.
Backups and restores Provider operates the backup system; you must still verify retention and restore access. You design storage, schedules, encryption, monitoring, and restore drills.
Incident response There is an escalation path for platform incidents, malware, and outages. You investigate logs, contain the breach, patch the cause, and communicate with users.
Customization Less freedom, but fewer unsafe configuration combinations. More control over web server, PHP-FPM, networking, and deployment architecture.

Some services are partially managed. Ask exactly which layer is covered and which tasks remain yours; “managed PHP” may not include application updates, plugin vulnerabilities, custom firewall rules, or database tuning.

How do you compare PHP hosts beyond price?

Score operational evidence against the same questions for every finalist. A lower monthly fee is meaningful only after compatibility, isolation, recovery, and support are equivalent.

Comparison axis Evidence to request Why it matters
PHP versions and migration Available branches, security-support dates, per-site selection, testing and rollback process Prevents forced upgrades onto an untested runtime or prolonged use of an unsupported branch.
Database service Engine and version, connection limits, upgrade notices, point-in-time or snapshot restore options Protects application compatibility and data recovery.
Extensions and limits Enabled modules, web/CLI parity, memory and process ceilings, upload and execution limits Determines whether code can run reliably under load.
HTTPS/TLS Automatic issuance, renewal alerts, redirects, protocol policy, certificate failure procedure Reduces credential exposure and preventable expiration outages.
Isolation and patching Process identity, filesystem boundaries, patch ownership, malware response, log access Shows how the shared platform contains another customer’s compromise.
Backups Frequency, retention, separate storage, file/database coverage, restore workflow and test evidence Converts a backup claim into a usable recovery capability.
Caching Cache layers, personalized-page exclusions, isolation, purge controls, rollback Prevents data leakage and stale or incorrect responses.
Operations SSH, staging, cron, deployment tooling, logs, monitoring and support escalation Determines how safely you can change and diagnose the site.
Scaling and geography Upgrade path, resource increases, data-center region, migration assistance and support coverage Limits surprise moves when traffic, regulation or response-time needs change.
Total cost Renewal price, backups, extra workers, staging, support, migrations and overage charges Reveals the operating cost after introductory pricing ends.

Provider-specific uptime commitments, prices, regions, and response times change frequently. Treat them as contract terms: read the current plan page and service agreement, and save the version you relied on when purchasing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is a practical PHP-hosting selection process?

Use a short, repeatable evaluation instead of accepting a sales summary. The following sequence puts irreversible risks first.

  1. Inventory the application. Record PHP, database, extensions, memory, process, cron, storage, and deployment requirements for production and staging.
  2. Eliminate incompatible plans. Remove any host that cannot name the required PHP branch, database version, extensions, or per-site limits.
  3. Verify lifecycle policy. Get security-support dates, upgrade notices, testing responsibility, and rollback options in writing.
  4. Inspect isolation. Ask how PHP runs under the account identity, how files are separated, and how a compromised account is contained.
  5. Test HTTPS. Confirm automatic certificate issuance and renewal, redirects, modern TLS maintenance, and failure alerts.
  6. Run a staging trial. Deploy a copy, exercise authentication, uploads, email, scheduled jobs, integrations, and a database migration on the exact runtime.
  7. Perform a restore drill. Restore files and a database into a non-production location and measure the time and steps required.
  8. Exercise cache controls. Check anonymous and authenticated responses, purge a single URL, and verify that rollback is immediate.
  9. Check operational access. Confirm SSH or an alternative workflow, logs, cron, deployment tooling, support escalation, and export options.
  10. Compare the complete cost. Include renewal pricing, backups, staging, resource upgrades, migration help, support tiers, and any overage charges.

Keep the provider’s written answers with your deployment records. They become the baseline for detecting a silent plan change or a support promise that is not being met.

What are the most common PHP-hosting mistakes?

  • Choosing by disk space alone: Storage does not reveal PHP workers, CPU contention, memory ceilings, or database limits.
  • Running an end-of-life branch: Temporary compatibility is not a reason to postpone a tested migration indefinitely.
  • Assuming extensions are standard: A missing intl, xml, or zip module can break deployment or runtime features.
  • Confusing certificates with security: HTTPS cannot repair vulnerable code, weak credentials, or cross-account isolation failures.
  • Accepting “daily backups” without a restore test: A scheduled job that cannot be restored is not a recovery plan.
  • Caching private responses: A performance setting can become a data-disclosure incident when authenticated pages are not excluded.
  • Testing only the homepage: Login, uploads, background jobs, mail, payments, and imports often exercise different extensions and limits.
  • Leaving the exit plan undefined: Before buying, confirm how to export files, databases, DNS records, certificates, and logs if you must migrate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change PHP versions without taking my site offline?

Often you can select a different branch per site and test it in staging first, but the exact behavior is provider-specific. Schedule the switch, verify database and extension compatibility, keep a tested rollback path, and monitor errors immediately after the change.

What should a hosting support contract say about security incidents?

It should identify who receives alerts, how quickly the provider acknowledges a suspected compromise, what logs and forensic data are preserved, and how account isolation or quarantine works. It should also state which patches and application-level fixes remain your responsibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I tell whether a staging copy is safe to use with production data?

Ask whether the provider can clone data into a protected environment, prevent search indexing, restrict access, and mask sensitive fields. Confirm that staging uses the same PHP branch, extensions, database version, and resource limits as production.

What is the safest way to test a cache configuration?

Use separate anonymous and authenticated sessions, request pages containing user-specific data, then inspect responses after a purge and a deployment. Keep a documented exclusion list for private routes and a one-step rollback if a shared response contains personal information.
