Choose hosting from your app’s runtime, not from a favorite vendor: a static site needs only a web server, short-lived server-rendered requests fit a serverless platform, and Docker services, workers, WebSockets, or always-on processes need a serverful runtime. Keep storage separate from compute. Put relational records in managed Postgres, sessions and cache data in a managed Redis-compatible service, and user uploads in object storage. Treat an app server’s local disk as disposable unless you deliberately add a persistent disk. This design keeps redeploys safe, makes costs measurable, and gives you a clear path when traffic or data grows.

What are you actually choosing when you pick hosting and storage?

“Hosting” covers the compute environment that builds and runs your application. “Storage” covers the data that must survive a restart, redeploy, hardware replacement, or scaling event. They are related, but they should usually be selected as separate components.

A deployment can serve files from a static web server, execute short-lived functions on demand, or keep one or more application processes running continuously. The right choice depends on whether your code needs a server, how long requests run, whether connections stay open, and what data must persist.

  • Compute: static files, serverless functions, containers, workers, scheduled jobs, and networking.
  • Durable data: database rows, accounts, orders, settings, and other records.
  • Ephemeral data: caches, temporary build artifacts, and regenerable files.
  • Binary files: images, videos, documents, backups, and user uploads.

Keeping these responsibilities distinct prevents a common failure: an app works until its platform restarts, then locally written files or an in-process session store disappear.

How do I classify my app’s runtime?

Start by identifying the longest-lived process and the most demanding request your app must support. The following three categories cover most small web applications.

Static export or single-page application

If your build produces HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and other assets without requiring a server at request time, any web server that serves those files can host it. AWS S3 configured for web delivery, Nginx, and Apache are examples of static hosting environments. A static export is often the least expensive and easiest to scale because there is no application process to keep alive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Authentication, forms, and data access can still exist, but they call an external API or backend. Do not choose a static deployment if your application requires server-side rendering, private API routes, background workers, or a process that must remain running.

Serverless or short-lived functions

Serverless platforms create or reuse function instances in response to requests. This model suits server-rendered pages and APIs that finish within the platform’s request limits and do not require a permanent process. It is especially attractive when global delivery and automatic scaling matter more than access to a conventional server.

Serverless code should assume that local files and in-memory state can vanish between invocations. Put sessions, queues, and shared state in managed services instead of relying on one function instance.

Always-on containers and services

Choose a serverful runtime when you need a Docker image, a background worker, private networking, a native WebSocket endpoint, a long-running process, or predictable control over a running service. Render’s official comparison positions its platform for Docker deployments, background workers, private networking, always-on servers, and native WebSockets. Those capabilities are materially different from a request-only function.

An always-on service gives you more control, but you must account for process health, deploys, capacity, and service costs even when traffic is low.

Next.js describes a staged approach: “Next.js enables starting as a static site or Single-Page Application (SPA), then later optionally upgrading to use features that require a server.” That makes a static-first architecture sensible when your current requirements are simple, provided you keep APIs and storage loosely coupled enough to add a server later.

Which hosting model fits each workload?

Use workload behavior as the deciding factor. Vendor names are useful examples, but the runtime capabilities and limits are what determine fit.

Workload Best starting model Why it fits What to verify
Documentation, landing page, static export Static host or object-storage-backed web server No application process is required; files can be cached broadly. Custom domains, TLS, redirects, cache invalidation, and build limits.
Next.js-style rendering and short API calls Serverless or managed application platform Functions can scale with requests and global delivery can reduce latency for a distributed audience. Invocation quotas, request timeout, upload size, bandwidth, and runtime compatibility.
Docker application with workers Always-on container service Supports a conventional process model and separate worker services. CPU and memory sizing, health checks, deploy behavior, logs, and networking.
Native WebSockets or long-lived connections Always-on service with WebSocket support Persistent connections need a runtime designed to keep them open. Connection limits, idle timeouts, horizontal scaling, and shared session state.
Scheduled or queue-driven work Worker plus managed queue or scheduler Work can run independently of a user’s HTTP request. Retry behavior, idempotency, job visibility, and worker concurrency.

Vercel’s official comparison emphasizes global edge distribution and performance-critical global applications. Render’s comparison emphasizes Docker, workers, private networking, always-on services, and native WebSockets. Treat those descriptions as signals about platform design, then test your own framework, dependencies, and operational requirements before committing.

Do I need a database?

You need a database when the application must retain structured records, query relationships, enforce uniqueness, or let multiple users share consistent state. A static site or a purely client-side tool may not need one; an account system, billing record, inventory list, or content management feature generally does.

Data Recommended service Examples Why
Relational records Managed PostgreSQL Users, orders, permissions, subscriptions, comments Transactions, indexes, constraints, and SQL queries.
Key-value, sessions, and cache Managed Redis-compatible service Short-lived sessions, rate limits, feature flags, cache entries Fast lookups with expiration and simple key-based access.
Large or user-provided files Object storage Photos, PDFs, exports, video, backups Independent scaling, broad access controls, and file-oriented pricing.
Temporary local artifacts Ephemeral app disk Image-processing scratch files, build output, transient logs Safe only when the data can be regenerated or discarded.

Do not use a file-based database on an ephemeral service unless you have a deliberate replication and backup plan. A local SQLite file can be useful for a prototype on a single persistent machine, but it becomes a liability when instances are replaced or scaled horizontally.

Will my files disappear when the app redeploys?

They can. Render’s documentation states: “By default, Render services have an ephemeral filesystem, which means that any changes you make to local files are lost every time a service redeploys or restarts.” The same risk applies to any platform whose service disk is not explicitly persistent.

Use the following rules:

  • Write uploads directly to object storage, preferably using a short-lived upload credential so the browser does not stream large files through your application server.
  • Store only the object key, owner, content type, and metadata in Postgres.
  • Use Redis-compatible storage for sessions and cache entries that must be shared across instances.
  • Use a persistent disk only for files that genuinely need local filesystem semantics and can tolerate being attached to a specific service or region.
  • Keep rebuildable files, dependency caches, and temporary conversions on ephemeral storage.

Object storage also lets file capacity grow independently from application CPU and memory. That separation prevents a large media collection from forcing you to resize the web service.

How much storage does a small app need?

Estimate each category separately instead of choosing one large disk. Count structured records, database indexes, object files, logs, backups, and temporary processing space; then decide how quickly each category can grow.

  1. List durable objects: users, records, indexes, uploaded files, generated exports, and backups.
  2. Estimate creation rate: new records and files per week or month.
  3. Estimate average size: include thumbnails, metadata, and multiple versions where applicable.
  4. Set retention: decide when logs, old exports, and abandoned uploads expire.
  5. Add recovery capacity: leave room for backups and a temporary migration copy.
  6. Measure actual use: review database, object-storage, and egress dashboards before increasing capacity.

On the free tier shown on Supabase’s 2026 pricing page, the allowance is 1 GB of included storage, 5 GB of cached egress, and a 50 MB maximum file upload size. Those figures can work for a small prototype, but the upload ceiling may rule out individual videos, archives, or high-resolution originals. Store larger objects in a service whose limits and costs match your file sizes.

Which limits should I check before choosing a platform?

Read the limits page for the exact plan you will use, then compare those limits with your build frequency, traffic, payload sizes, and slowest request. A low price is not useful if one quota blocks your normal workflow.

Limit Published figure What it affects
Vercel Hobby deployments 100 deployments per day (2026 limits page) Teams that push frequently or run many preview builds.
Vercel function invocations 1 million (2026 limits page) Request volume and high-frequency API endpoints.
Vercel fast data transfer 100 GB (2026 limits page) Bandwidth for pages, API responses, and assets.
Vercel static-file upload 100 MB (2026 limits page) Individual static assets and deployment artifacts.
Vercel proxied request timeout 120 seconds (2026 limits page) Slow server-rendered responses, reports, and synchronous imports.

These are plan-specific figures published for 2026, not guarantees for every account or future plan. Confirm the current limits in your dashboard before launch, especially if you expect large uploads, long-running requests, or automated deployment bursts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For work that can exceed a request timeout, move it to a queue and worker. Return a job identifier to the client, process the task asynchronously, and let the client poll or receive a completion event.

How should I model the bill?

Separate fixed service charges from usage charges. Vercel describes managed infrastructure as usage-based, with billing tied to transferred data, requests, and compute duration. A low-traffic app may be inexpensive, but bandwidth, function execution, or build activity can become the dominant variable as usage changes.

Render’s published figures include $7 per month for a service using less than one CPU, $0.25 per GB per month for persistent disks, and $0.30 per GB for Postgres storage. These are listed component prices, not a complete application bill; compute, database operation, transfer, backups, and other services can add to the total.

Supabase’s 2026 pricing page shows the free-tier allowances described above. Once you exceed an allowance, check the current overage and plan rules rather than assuming that every additional gigabyte or request has the same price.

Build a simple monthly model with these lines:

  • Web or container compute, including always-on minimums.
  • Function requests and execution time, if applicable.
  • Database instance and stored data.
  • Object-storage capacity and operations.
  • Data transfer or egress.
  • Backups, logs, monitoring, and staging environments.

Use a deliberately high-traffic scenario as well as your expected average. That reveals whether a platform’s metered egress or request pricing could surprise you during a launch, media upload, or viral link.

What happens when traffic grows?

Growth usually exposes a bottleneck in one of four places: request concurrency, database capacity, outbound bandwidth, or background work. Because compute and storage are separate, you can address the failing component without rebuilding everything.

More requests

Cache public responses, optimize database queries, and increase function or service capacity. Stateless application processes are easier to replicate because any instance can handle a request.

More database work

Add indexes based on real query plans, move expensive reports to asynchronous jobs, and size the managed database independently from the web tier. Keep migrations versioned and reversible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

More files

Keep objects in object storage and deliver them through signed URLs or a content-delivery layer. Do not attach a progressively larger local disk to every application instance.

More background jobs

Separate workers from web requests. Queue retries, enforce idempotency, and monitor queue age so a slow worker does not silently create a backlog.

A common migration path is static export to serverless, then serverless to containers when WebSockets, workers, private networking, or long-running processes become essential. Keeping the database behind a standard connection interface and storing uploads outside the app filesystem reduces the work at each transition.

How do I choose a design step by step?

Follow this sequence before signing up for a plan or moving production data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Inventory runtime needs. Mark whether you need static files only, server-side rendering, API routes, workers, WebSockets, scheduled jobs, or an always-on process.
  2. Separate data types. Assign relational records to Postgres, key-value state to Redis-compatible storage, and binary files to object storage.
  3. Define the largest request. Record expected upload size, response size, processing time, and connection duration.
  4. Compare platform behavior. Check static support, function runtime, container support, worker support, private networking, WebSockets, regions, and deployment workflow.
  5. Write down quotas. Include deployments, invocations, transfer, upload size, timeout, database storage, and backup retention.
  6. Build the monthly bill. Model average and peak traffic, stored data, egress, and always-on resources.
  7. Test failure behavior. Restart the service, redeploy it, rotate credentials, and verify that files, records, sessions, and queued jobs behave as designed.
  8. Document migration points. Keep database schema migrations, export procedures, object keys, and environment variables portable.

What backup and recovery details matter?

A storage service is not automatically a complete recovery plan. Confirm whether backups are included, how often they run, how long they are retained, whether they are stored in another region, and how a restore is initiated. The available evidence does not establish one universal backup policy for the services discussed here, so verify the exact plan you select.

For a small app, write and rehearse a recovery runbook:

  • Export the database on a schedule appropriate to the data’s value.
  • Keep object-storage versioning or a separate backup copy for irreplaceable files.
  • Record the deployment commit, schema version, and environment configuration for each release.
  • Test restoring a sample database and downloading representative objects.
  • Define who can approve a restore and where credentials are stored securely.

A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery capability.

When does self-hosting make sense?

Self-hosting can be appropriate when data locality, regulatory control, predictable infrastructure access, or specialized networking outweighs the operational work. You become responsible for operating-system updates, firewalls, TLS, monitoring, backups, failover, capacity planning, and incident response.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most small apps, managed compute plus managed database and object storage is the lower-risk starting point. Choose self-hosting deliberately when you can staff those responsibilities and have a tested recovery process, not merely because a virtual machine appears cheaper on a monthly price list.

What are the common deployment and storage mistakes?

  • Uploading to local disk: files vanish after a restart on an ephemeral service. Send them to object storage instead.
  • Putting sessions in process memory: users are logged out when requests reach another instance. Use shared session storage.
  • Running imports inside HTTP requests: timeouts interrupt work. Queue the import and process it with a worker.
  • Ignoring egress: a popular download can cost more than stored gigabytes. Track transfer and cache public assets.
  • Assuming free-tier limits are permanent: quotas and pricing can change. Record the plan and review limits before launch.
  • Coupling files to database rows without cleanup: deleted records leave orphaned objects. Add a deletion or reconciliation job.
  • Choosing a database by convenience: a local file may not survive scaling. Use managed Postgres when you need shared relational data.
  • Skipping restore tests: a backup policy that cannot be restored does not protect the app.

Which option should I choose?

Use this condensed decision tree:

  • If you have a static frontend or documentation, deploy a static export to a static host or object-storage-backed web server.
  • If you have a Next.js-style app with short-lived functions and global delivery, evaluate Vercel and verify invocation, upload, timeout, and bandwidth limits against your workload.
  • If you need Docker, a worker, a WebSocket endpoint, private networking, or an always-on process, evaluate Render or another serverful platform.
  • If you store relational records, use managed Postgres.
  • If you need sessions, cache, or key-value state, use a managed Redis-compatible service.
  • If users upload large or numerous files, use object storage and keep only metadata in the database.
  • If you need control or locality that managed services cannot provide, self-host only with an operations and recovery plan.

This approach starts small without making the app’s data hostage to a particular compute instance. It also gives each future scaling decision a clear trigger: runtime requirements change the host; data volume changes the storage tier; traffic changes capacity and transfer planning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I host a static frontend and an API on different providers?

Yes. A static site can use one host while its API runs on a serverless or container platform. Configure a deliberate API origin, HTTPS, CORS, authentication, and deployment versioning so the two releases remain compatible.

Should uploaded files be stored in the database as binary data?

Usually no for a small web app. Object storage is better suited to large files, while the database stores ownership, permissions, object keys, checksums, and lifecycle metadata; this keeps queries and backups smaller.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I test whether my app survives a redeploy?

Deploy a staging copy, create a record and upload a file, then restart or redeploy the service. Verify that the record, file, login session, queued job, and application logs behave as expected after the process returns.

What is the safest way to change providers later?

Keep schema migrations in source control, export the database in a standard format, and use provider-neutral object keys and metadata. Run both environments briefly, copy incremental changes, switch traffic, and retain the old environment until reads and background jobs are confirmed.
