Choose hardware backwards from the model you want to run. Identify its parameter count, weight format, quantization, context window and expected number of users, then make sure the model weights, KV cache, runtime buffers and operating system fit in memory with room to spare. As a practical starting point, plan on 6–8GB of VRAM for small 4B models, 12–16GB for roughly 9B–12B models, and 24GB or more for 27B-class models. Apple Silicon Macs can run local models when their unified memory is large enough; memory bandwidth largely determines their speed. Finally, verify driver and runtime support, then compare speed, noise, power, upgradeability and total system cost—not just the GPU’s headline performance.
What must the hardware fit before a model can run?
Memory capacity is the first gate. A model cannot load if its weights alone exceed available VRAM or system RAM, and a model that barely fits may fail as soon as you increase the context window. Reserve space for four things:

- KV cache: memory used to retain attention data for the prompt and generated conversation. It grows with context length and can become the largest extra cost during long-document work.
- Runtime buffers: temporary allocations used for kernels, tokenization, batching and model execution.
- Operating-system and application memory: the headroom needed to keep the machine responsive and prevent swapping.
NVIDIA’s local-LLM guidance is to use the most powerful model that fits comfortably in GPU memory, rather than forcing a larger model through aggressive offload. A card with higher compute speed but insufficient capacity may be less useful than a slower card that keeps the target model entirely in local memory.
A simple sizing equation
Start with the weight estimate, then add headroom:
total memory ≈ weight memory + KV cache + runtime overhead + system headroom

For unquantized bfloat16 or float16 weights, current Hugging Face guidance uses about 2GB of VRAM per billion parameters. Float32 is about twice that: its documentation describes roughly 4 × the parameter count in GB. These are planning figures, not a guarantee of an exact runtime allocation.
For a 70B model in bfloat16 or float16, the weights alone are approximately 140GB. That excludes the cache and execution overhead, so it is not a practical single-24GB-GPU workload in that format.

How much VRAM do common local models need?
The following bands are practical starting points from NVIDIA’s current local-LLM playbook. They assume quantized local inference and still require extra room for context and runtime allocations.
| Available GPU memory | Example model tier | What it suits | Planning caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6–8GB VRAM | Qwen 3.5 4B | Small chat, summarization and lightweight coding | Long contexts, larger batches or other GPU applications can exceed the remaining space. |
| 12–16GB VRAM | Qwen 3.5 9B or Gemma 4 12B | General-purpose local assistants and coding tools | Keep a safety margin; a nominal 16GB card does not provide all 16GB to the model. |
| 24GB or more | Qwen 3.6 27B | Larger quantized models and longer contexts | Higher purchase price, power use and cooling requirements are typical. |
These examples are model-family and quantization dependent. A different 9B model may have a different architecture or context requirement, and a 4-bit file is not always the same size across runtimes. Check the exact model artifact before buying.
How do precision and quantization change the memory requirement?
Precision determines how many bytes are used for each parameter. Float32 uses about four bytes per parameter; bfloat16 and float16 use about two. Quantization stores weights with fewer bits, reducing capacity requirements at the cost of some numerical fidelity and, depending on the runtime, possible changes in speed.
Four-bit planning on Apple Silicon
The MLX guide’s 2026 rule of thumb is about 0.55–0.6GB per billion parameters for a 4-bit model, before context and operating-system room. A 12B 4-bit model therefore needs roughly 6.6–7.2GB for weights as a first estimate, not a complete memory budget. The final allocation depends on the model architecture, tokenizer, context and MLX configuration.
Why the smallest file is not automatically best
Lower-bit quantization can make a model fit on a cheaper card, but pushing it too far can reduce response quality. Coding, arithmetic, tool selection and multilingual output may reveal degradation sooner than casual conversation. If two quantizations fit, prefer the higher-quality one that still leaves space for your intended context and applications.

How should I account for context length and the KV cache?
Context length is not free. The prompt, conversation history, retrieved documents and generated tokens all occupy the model’s attention cache. Doubling the context can substantially increase cache use, although the exact growth depends on the architecture and implementation.
Plan separate budgets for short chat and long-document analysis. A model that works at a 4K or 8K context may run out of memory at a much larger advertised context. Leave more headroom when you need tool-using agents, document retrieval, large system prompts or several concurrent requests. If memory pressure appears only after a long conversation, reduce the context window, shorten retrieved passages or use a runtime option that limits cache size before changing hardware.
What workload should I define before comparing hardware?
Write down the workload first; otherwise hardware comparisons mix incompatible goals. Record these variables:

- Model family and parameter count: for example, a 4B, 12B or 27B model.
- Weight format: float16, bfloat16, 8-bit, 4-bit or another quantization.
- Context target: ordinary chat, coding sessions, long documents or agent traces.
- Latency target: instant interactive replies versus acceptable batch completion time.
- Concurrency: one personal user, several household users or a service with simultaneous requests.
- Prompt-processing needs: large documents can stress prompt ingestion even when token generation is fast.
- Software features: tool calling, vision input, embeddings, fine-tuning or CPU/GPU offload.
Occasional chat can tolerate lower throughput. A coding assistant needs steady interactive generation. A document-analysis or agent server needs memory for long prompts and concurrent KV caches, often making capacity more important than peak benchmark speed.
Should I buy an NVIDIA GPU PC, an Apple Silicon Mac or a CPU system?
There is no universal winner. Choose the platform whose memory model, runtime support and upgrade path match the workload.
NVIDIA GPU PC with 12–16GB VRAM
A discrete NVIDIA GPU offers broad local-runtime support and strong memory bandwidth in the mid-size range. Twelve to 16GB is a sensible tier for 4B–12B models, coding assistants and general local use. It is less suitable for a larger model that cannot fit without substantial offload. A desktop also lets you replace the GPU, add system RAM and improve cooling later.
NVIDIA GPU PC with 24GB or more
At least 24GB opens larger quantized models, including the 27B-class examples in NVIDIA’s playbook, and gives more room for context. The trade-offs are higher purchase price, power draw, heat and fan noise. Check the power supply, case dimensions, connector requirements and airflow before assuming a card will fit an existing tower.

Apple Silicon Mac with 24GB–64GB or more unified memory
Apple Silicon uses unified memory shared by the CPU and GPU. The MLX guide states that any Apple Silicon Mac can run a local LLM; capacity determines whether a particular model fits, while memory bandwidth largely determines speed. A quiet integrated system avoids buying a separate graphics card, but memory is normally fixed at purchase and cannot be upgraded later. Compare configurations by total unified memory and chip bandwidth, not by discrete-VRAM labels.
CPU-only workstation
A CPU system can run any model that fits in ordinary RAM, with no discrete-GPU compatibility issue. Generation and prompt processing are generally slower, especially for larger models, but this can be adequate for small models, testing, offline batch jobs or users who value low hardware complexity. CPU/GPU offload can increase the model size you can load, yet every offloaded layer introduces a performance trade-off.
Multi-GPU workstation
Multiple GPUs combine memory for models that exceed one card’s capacity. They also add cost, power, heat, case and power-supply constraints, PCIe-topology considerations and software configuration. Treat this as an advanced option: verify that your chosen runtime can split the model efficiently instead of assuming that the VRAM totals will behave like one large pool.
| Option | Strength | Limitation | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA GPU PC, 12–16GB | Broad runtime support and good mid-size capacity | Larger models need more VRAM or offload | 4B–12B models and coding assistants |
| NVIDIA GPU PC, 24GB+ | Fits larger quantized models and longer contexts | Higher price, power and cooling demands | 20B–30B-class local models |
| Apple Silicon Mac, 24GB–64GB+ | Quiet integrated system with shared CPU/GPU memory | Memory is generally not upgradeable; bandwidth varies by chip and configuration | Portable or quiet local inference |
| CPU-only workstation | Low hardware complexity and ordinary system RAM | Slower generation and prompt processing | Small models, testing and batch jobs |
| Multi-GPU workstation | Combines memory for very large models | Cost, power, topology and configuration complexity | Large models and advanced users |
How do I verify runtime and driver support?
Hardware is useful only when your operating system and inference stack can access it. Ollama documents NVIDIA support with compute-capability and driver requirements, Apple GPU acceleration through Metal, and Vulkan paths for additional Windows and Linux GPUs.
- Write down the exact GPU or Apple chip, operating system version and installed driver.
- Check the runtime’s hardware-support page for that exact combination, including minimum driver or compute-capability requirements.
- Install the runtime and run its diagnostic or model-list command before downloading a large model.
- Load a small model first and confirm that the accelerator is being used rather than silently falling back to the CPU.
- Test the intended quantization and context length, then monitor VRAM or unified-memory use while generating.
Support can differ between Windows and Linux, between driver releases and between runtimes. Vulkan support may broaden the list of usable GPUs, but it does not guarantee the same kernels, speed or feature coverage as a well-supported CUDA or Metal path.
How much system RAM and storage do local models need?
System RAM matters even when inference is GPU-accelerated. Intel’s 2024 OpenVINO white paper describes model files ranging from about 2GB to more than 300GB and warns that insufficient RAM can cause slow swapping or crashes. Keep enough RAM for the operating system, model-loading conversions, the runtime and any applications used alongside the model.
As a practical rule, do not size RAM to the compressed download alone. CPU offload, model conversion and multi-user serving can require substantially more working memory than the file on disk. If the machine begins swapping during load, generation speed can collapse even though the GPU has spare capacity.

Storage checklist
- Use an SSD with free space for the model file, temporary downloads, alternate quantizations and updates.
- Prefer NVMe storage when you frequently change models or load large files; it reduces waiting during transfers and startup, but does not increase tokens per second once the model is resident.
- Keep separate space for several quantizations if you are comparing quality; do not assume deleting a model from the runtime removes every cached copy.
- Remember that a 300GB-class model can consume most of a small system drive before logs and other applications are counted.
Which performance and ownership trade-offs matter?
Compare systems on the dimensions that affect your actual use:
- Usable model size: the largest model that fits with your context and applications running.
- Quantization quality: whether you can use a less aggressive quantization instead of one chosen only to fit.
- Generation speed: tokens per second after the model is loaded.
- Prompt-processing speed: how quickly long documents are ingested.
- Concurrency: whether multiple requests can run without exhausting cache memory.
- Noise and power: important for an office, bedroom or always-on server.
- Upgradeability: replaceable GPU, expandable RAM and additional storage.
- Portability and software compatibility: whether you can take the system with you and use your preferred runtime.
- Total cost: include the GPU or Mac configuration, RAM, SSD, power supply, cooling and electricity.
Do not treat a benchmark from a different model, quantization or context as a purchasing promise. Measure the workload you actually intend to run, using the same prompt length and generation settings.

- Choose the model target. Name the model family, parameter count, quantization and context window instead of starting with a GPU price.
- Estimate weight memory. Use about 2GB per billion parameters for bfloat16 or float16, about 4GB per billion for float32, or the model publisher’s file size for a quantized build. For Apple Silicon 4-bit planning, the MLX estimate is about 0.55–0.6GB per billion parameters.
- Add headroom. Reserve space for KV cache, runtime buffers, the operating system and any concurrent requests. Increase the margin for long contexts or agents.
- Choose a platform. Select an NVIDIA PC for broad discrete-GPU support, Apple Silicon for quiet unified-memory systems, CPU-only for simplicity and small models, or multi-GPU for advanced large-model deployments.
- Check physical requirements. Verify card dimensions, power connectors, supply capacity, cooling, RAM slots and SSD capacity.
- Verify software. Confirm operating-system, driver, compute-capability, Metal or Vulkan support in the runtime you plan to use.
- Validate with a small install. Load a modest model, check accelerator utilization and observe memory during a representative prompt.
- Test the real workload. Measure generation and prompt-processing speed at your target context and concurrency before committing to a larger model library.
What common mistakes cause failures?
Buying on parameter count alone
Two models with the same parameter count can have different file sizes, architectures and cache behavior. Use the exact quantization file and runtime requirements.
Using every last megabyte of VRAM
A model that loads with no margin may crash when the conversation grows or another process claims memory. Choose a smaller quantization or model, reduce context, or move to a larger-memory platform.
Assuming unified memory equals dedicated VRAM
Apple Silicon shares memory with macOS and applications. A 24GB configuration does not make all 24GB available to model weights, so leave operating-system headroom.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Ignoring driver and runtime paths
A technically capable GPU may run slowly or not at all if its driver, compute capability or backend is unsupported. Check support before purchase and test acceleration after installation.
Confusing storage capacity with inference capacity
An SSD can hold a model that cannot fit in RAM or VRAM. Storage solves retention and loading time; it does not replace execution memory.

CPU/GPU or multi-GPU offload can make a larger model load, but transferring activations between devices generally costs latency. Use it when capacity matters more than interactive speed, and benchmark the result.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an 8GB laptop run a local language model?
Yes, provided the model’s quantized weights plus cache and system use fit within the available memory. Small 4B-class models are the realistic target; close other applications and keep the context modest to avoid swapping.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIs 16GB of VRAM enough for a local coding assistant?
It is a practical middle tier for many 4B–12B quantized models, but the exact answer depends on context length and the model file. Leave room for the editor, browser and runtime rather than treating the printed VRAM capacity as a model-only budget.
Can I run a 70B model on a single 24GB graphics card?
Not in bfloat16 or float16, where the weights alone are about 140GB. A heavily quantized build with multi-device or CPU offload may load, but expect compromises in quality, speed, memory and configuration complexity.
Does a faster GPU always produce faster local AI responses?
Only when the model fits efficiently on that GPU. If capacity forces offload, a slower card with enough memory can deliver better sustained generation and fewer failures than a faster card that repeatedly moves data between devices.
How can I tell whether my runtime is using the GPU?
Watch the runtime’s startup diagnostics and your operating system’s GPU or unified-memory monitor while loading and generating. If utilization remains near zero and system CPU usage is high, check the driver, backend selection and model format before buying new hardware.
