The best gaming software setup is the smallest one that solves your actual needs. Start with Windows’ built-in tools to check startup apps, resource use, storage, and updates; then add a launcher, communication app, driver software, overlay, or monitoring tool only if you use its specific function. No universal utility checklist—or guaranteed FPS boost—fits every PC. Compatibility and background activity matter as much as a feature’s name.
What counts as essential gaming software?
Essential software is whatever you need for a concrete task: starting a game, keeping its graphics driver current, communicating with teammates, recording play, or diagnosing a specific performance issue. It is not a fixed set of utilities every PC gamer should install. The right setup depends on the games you play, your hardware, and which tasks you need to do while a game is running.

That distinction helps separate software you need from software that merely offers a gaming-themed dashboard or a promise to optimize your PC. A launcher may be necessary to access a particular game library; a chat app may be necessary for a group you play with. A second monitoring utility may add little if an existing tool already gives you the information you need. The question is not whether an app is marketed to gamers, but whether its purpose justifies keeping it installed or active.
Also separate installed from running. Some apps can remain installed for occasional use without starting automatically or running in the background during a game. That lets you keep useful tools without treating every installed app as part of your active gaming setup.

Could software be the reason your PC is slow?
It could be, but slowness has several possible causes. Microsoft lists limited storage, excessive startup activity, outdated software, malware, and hardware that no longer meets current needs among the issues that can affect PC performance. Software cleanup can help when background activity is part of the problem, but it cannot guarantee that an older or underpowered PC will feel faster.
Before installing an optimizer, describe the symptom as specifically as you can. Does Windows take a long time to become usable after startup? Does a game struggle only after you open a chat app or browser? Is a game using the wrong graphics processor, or do you simply need to monitor resource use? Different symptoms call for different checks. Installing a general-purpose “booster” before identifying the problem adds another program without establishing that it can fix anything.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Use Windows to check the basics first. Task Manager can show processes, resource use, and startup impact. Windows settings also provide tools for storage cleanup and updates. If those checks do not point to a software cause, consider other possibilities rather than repeatedly adding utilities.
How do I check which apps are using resources?
Task Manager is a useful first stop for seeing what is running and which apps are configured to launch with Windows. Use it to identify a specific source of background activity, not to close unfamiliar processes indiscriminately.
- Open Task Manager and review the running processes and their CPU, memory, and disk use. If a game is open, check whether the resource activity you are concerned about appears alongside it.
- Open Task Manager’s Startup apps view and review each app’s startup impact. An app that launches at sign-in may be useful without needing to start every time Windows does.
- Disable startup only for apps you recognize and do not need to open automatically. If you rely on an app, or are not sure what it does, leave it enabled until you have identified its purpose.
- Close apps you are not using before a gaming session, especially if you have identified them as contributing to background activity. Recheck Task Manager to see whether the resource use changed.
- Check available storage and install relevant Windows updates. If performance remains poor, scan for malware and consider whether the hardware meets the needs of the games you are trying to run.
Startup impact is a clue, not a verdict that an app is bad. The useful question is whether an app needs to launch automatically for your use case. Change one recognized app at a time where practical, so you can tell whether the change helped and restore it if you lose a function you need.

Which apps should start with Windows?
Keep automatic startup for apps whose function you need immediately after sign-in; turn it off for recognized apps you can open manually when needed. This avoids treating every launcher, overlay, chat client, recording utility, RGB controller, or monitoring tool as equally necessary at startup.
For each app, ask three questions:
- Do I need it during this session? A tool used only for occasional troubleshooting may not need to run every time you play.
- Does it need to be running, or only installed? Some software can be opened only when you need its feature.
- Is something else already doing this job? If two apps provide overlapping monitoring, overlay, or management functions, choose the one that better fits your use instead of automatically keeping both active.
Do not use this as a reason to disable security protections. Microsoft’s performance guidance includes scanning for malware; it does not recommend removing security tools as a gaming optimization. If you suspect a security app is causing a problem, investigate that specific issue rather than assuming protection should be switched off.
When are Windows 11 gaming features worth enabling?
Windows 11 has gaming features with specific compatibility conditions, so check the game’s API and display mode before expecting a feature to apply. For compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running windowed or borderless, Optimizations for windowed games can move the game from the older blt presentation model to the flip model. Microsoft describes this as reducing frame latency and enabling features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate on supported displays.
How to enable windowed-game optimizations
- In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Find the setting for Optimizations for windowed games and enable it if you want to try the feature.
- Restart the game so the setting can take effect.
- Confirm that the game is a supported DirectX 10 or 11 title and that it is running windowed or borderless. A game outside those conditions is not covered by this feature’s stated scope.
This is a compatibility feature, not a universal performance switch. Microsoft’s description is qualitative: it says the feature reduces frame latency, but does not give a single FPS increase that applies to all supported games and PCs. Auto HDR and variable refresh rate also depend on display support.
What does Xbox mode do?
Microsoft documents Xbox mode for Windows 11 version 24H2 or later and supported markets. It provides a controller-oriented full-screen experience. If Enter Xbox mode on startup is enabled, Windows limits background processes to improve performance while gaming. This is an optional behavior in a particular Windows version and market scope, not a reason to install a separate “booster.”

Should I install GPU-vendor software?
Vendor software can be useful when you need a supported driver or a particular GPU feature. Treat it as a targeted addition, and check the documented Windows, GPU, game API, and display-mode requirements before relying on a feature. Do not assume that an older compatibility description guarantees support on every later configuration.
What Radeon Game Advisor is for
AMD describes Radeon Game Advisor as a tool for real-time game-performance analysis that can recommend in-game graphics settings to balance image quality and performance. That makes it relevant if you want game-specific settings suggestions and your configuration falls within the tool’s support scope.
The cited AMD FAQ describes support for Radeon Software 18.12.2 on Windows 7 or Windows 10 64-bit, most DirectX 9, 11, and 12 and Vulkan titles, and Radeon RX 400-series and newer graphics. It specifies exclusive full-screen access and says APU graphics are not supported. Those are the FAQ’s stated compatibility details for that software version; they should not be read as confirmation of current support for every newer Windows, driver, GPU, or game setup. Check current documentation for your configuration before installing or relying on the feature.
A GPU utility is not automatically an FPS enhancer just because it analyzes performance or recommends settings. Its value is that it may help you identify or adjust a supported configuration. The reviewed official guidance does not establish a general, measured FPS gain that applies across PCs and games.

How should I compare two gaming utilities?
Compare apps by the problem they solve and the cost they impose in compatibility, background activity, overlap, and trust. A feature list alone does not tell you whether a utility belongs on your PC.

| Question | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Does it solve a stated problem? | Identify the exact task, such as managing startup, analyzing a supported game, or communicating with teammates. | A tool without a concrete use can add complexity without addressing the reason you installed it. |
| Is it compatible? | Check Windows version, GPU generation, game API, and display mode against the feature’s documented requirements. | Features can be limited to particular hardware, APIs, or ways of displaying a game. |
| Does it need to run in the background? | Review its startup setting and whether its function is needed during play. | Windows performance guidance identifies startup and background activity as things to check when a PC is slow. |
| Does another tool already do the job? | Compare the utility with the Windows or GPU-vendor feature you already use. | Overlapping tools can create unnecessary duplication in your setup. |
| Can you trust its source and update path? | Verify that the software comes from its official vendor and that its support information applies to your configuration. | Provenance and relevant updates matter when choosing software that runs on your PC. |
Apply those checks before installation and again if the app changes its behavior after an update. If you cannot establish what a utility does, whether it supports your setup, or why it needs to run, do not give it automatic startup simply because it is labeled for gaming.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I do if the PC is still slow?
If disabling an unnecessary startup app does not resolve the symptom, do not keep disabling unrelated software. Move through the other causes Microsoft identifies: check storage, install updates, scan for malware, and consider whether the hardware meets the demands you are placing on it.
- Slow sign-in or startup: Review recognized startup apps and disable automatic launch for those you do not need immediately.
- High resource activity while gaming: Use Task Manager to identify which processes are active and whether their CPU, memory, or disk use is relevant to the slowdown.
- Limited free storage: Use Windows storage cleanup tools and remove apps you no longer use.
- Possible outdated software: Check for Windows and relevant software updates.
- Possible malware: Run a malware scan rather than removing security protection.
- Older hardware or demanding games: Software housekeeping may not overcome hardware that no longer meets current needs.
For a feature-specific issue, verify the compatibility conditions instead of treating it as a general Windows slowdown. Windowed-game optimizations, for example, are limited by DirectX version and display mode; a GPU advisor may have its own hardware and API requirements.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ceased. Since the date has passed, a Windows 10 user should not assume that routine free support and security updates continue; plan around the support status rather than relying on a gaming utility to compensate for it.
Windows version matters for feature selection as well as support. The windowed-game optimization described above is a Windows 11 feature, and Xbox mode is documented for Windows 11 version 24H2 or later in supported markets. Check the version requirements for the particular feature you intend to use.

How do I build a lean gaming setup?
Use a short, reversible selection process. It keeps the setup centered on your needs and makes it easier to spot when a new background app changes behavior.
- Write down the problem. Specify whether you need a game launcher, communication, driver management, recording, monitoring, or help with a particular performance symptom.
- Check Windows first. Review Task Manager’s processes and startup impact, close apps you do not need, and check storage and updates.
- Choose the narrowest suitable tool. Prefer a built-in feature when it meets the need; add GPU-vendor software when you want a vendor feature and your setup meets its requirements.
- Verify compatibility. Check Windows version, GPU, API, and display mode where relevant. Treat older documentation as describing its stated version, not every current configuration.
- Decide whether it needs startup access. Keep automatic launch only if you need the app immediately or its function requires it; otherwise open it manually when needed.
- Check the result. Compare the original symptom with the same task after the change. If nothing relevant improved, reconsider whether the utility is useful rather than adding another optimizer.
- Keep security intact. Do not turn off protective software as a blanket gaming tweak; scan for malware if that is a plausible cause.
The result should be a setup you can explain: each app has a defined purpose, a reason to run when it does, and compatibility that matches your PC. Anything that cannot meet those tests is a candidate to remove from startup or uninstall if you no longer need it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an app use resources even when I am not actively using it?
Yes. Some apps can start with Windows or remain active in the background, which is why Task Manager’s process and startup views are useful. Whether that activity affects your particular game depends on the app and the PC.
Should I uninstall every launcher I do not use every day?
Not necessarily. If you still need a launcher to access games, you can keep it installed while disabling automatic startup if you do not need it at sign-in. Installation and background activity are separate decisions.
Will closing a process in Task Manager make my game run better?
Not automatically. First identify what the process is and whether it is actually contributing to the problem; closing an unfamiliar or needed process can disrupt a function you rely on.
