Choose cryptocurrency tax software by matching your transaction volume and activity complexity to its import coverage, transfer matching, cost-basis controls, and jurisdiction-specific reports. For a U.S. return, the product should produce Form 8949 and Schedule D data, help you reconcile broker Form 1099-DA figures, and preserve an audit trail. Before paying, import your complete history, inspect unmatched transfers and missing basis, and confirm the exact tax-year forms you can download. Simple exchange trading may need only basic imports and capital-gain reports; DeFi, staking, lending, NFTs, margin activity, amended returns, or very high volume justify stronger reconciliation tools and review by a crypto-knowledgeable CPA or enrolled agent.

What does cryptocurrency tax software actually do?

Crypto tax software turns exchange, wallet, and blockchain records into a ledger of taxable disposals, income, transfers, and cost basis. It is not a substitute for a tax return preparer: most products generate reports and filing-software exports, while you or your tax professional remain responsible for the return.

A useful system performs four jobs:

  • Collects data: connects exchange APIs, accepts CSV files, and imports supported self-custody wallets and chains.
  • Reconciles ownership transfers: recognizes both sides of a move between your own wallets so it is not counted as a sale.
  • Calculates basis and gains: carries acquisition dates, fees, and lots through disposals using the method available in your jurisdiction.
  • Produces tax outputs: creates forms, summaries, and an audit trail that can be handed to filing software or a professional.

The cheapest plan is useful only if it contains your entire history and correctly explains every balance. A low price paired with missing wallets, duplicate rows, or unresolved basis can create a larger bill when you have to repair the return manually.

Which IRS forms and rules must U.S. crypto tax software support?

For U.S. taxpayers, digital assets are treated as property. The 2025 Instructions for Form 8949 say that general property-transaction rules apply to digital assets recorded on a cryptographically secured distributed ledger.

Form 8949 and Schedule D

Sales and exchanges generally flow to Form 8949, where proceeds, basis, dates, and adjustments are listed. Schedule D summarizes the resulting short- and long-term capital gains and deductible losses for Form 1040. The 2025 Form 8949 instructions add digital-asset boxes G-I for short-term transactions and J-L for long-term transactions, so confirm that your software supports the tax year you are filing rather than assuming an older template is sufficient.

Form 1099-DA reconciliation

Broker reporting for digital-asset sales effected after 2025 is covered by the IRS 2026 Form 1099-DA instructions. The statement can contain proceeds, basis, and covered-security fields. Your software should let you compare those figures with its transaction ledger and investigate each difference; an exchange statement does not prove that your wallet history is complete.

Reporting applies even when no statement arrives

IRS FAQ A108, added December 15, 2025, says taxable digital-asset income, gain, or loss must be reported for the transaction year regardless of the amount or whether you receive a payee statement or information return. FAQ A109 directs individuals to Form 8949 and Schedule D unless qualifying Form 1099-DA information permits an exception. Therefore, do not use the presence or absence of a 1099-DA as your data-collection rule.

How do I test import coverage before buying?

Build an inventory first, then test it in each shortlisted product’s free preview. Count every source that can create a tax event, not just the exchanges where you remember placing trades.

  1. List every account and chain. Include custodial exchanges, hardware- or software-wallet addresses, DeFi protocols, bridges, staking platforms, lending accounts, NFT marketplaces, mining or income sources, and all tax years that may affect an open lot.
  2. Check connection types. An API is convenient when it remains current; a CSV fallback is essential when an exchange has no API or its API omits older records. Verify that the importer accepts the exact file format and date range you can download.
  3. Import complete histories. Do not start with only the current year if an earlier acquisition supplies basis for a current sale. Use the product’s preview to see whether deposits, withdrawals, trades, fees, rewards, and conversions appear.
  4. Inspect data-quality warnings. Look for duplicate imports, spam or dust tokens, missing prices, negative balances, impossible timestamps, and transactions assigned to the wrong wallet.
  5. Record unsupported activity. If a chain or protocol is not supported, determine whether a documented CSV format or manual entry can preserve transaction IDs, dates, amounts, and values. If neither exists, the product may not be suitable.

Import coverage is a moving target. Supported exchanges, chains, and tax-year reports can change, so verify the vendor’s current list immediately before filing.

How should software handle transfers and cost basis?

A transfer between wallets you own is normally movement of property, not a disposal. The software must match the withdrawal to the corresponding deposit and carry the original lot, acquisition date, and basis into the destination wallet.

What automatic matching should show

  • A linked withdrawal and deposit with a plausible time window, asset, and amount after network fees.
  • A transfer label that prevents a capital gain from being created merely by changing wallets.
  • Lot-level detail showing which acquisition was carried forward and how fees were treated.
  • Warnings when only one side of a transfer exists or when an acquisition date and basis are missing.

Review matches rather than accepting every suggestion. Bridges, wrapped assets, contract interactions, and transfers between exchanges can look similar while having different tax consequences. A missing historical deposit can create an artificial negative balance or force the software to treat a later disposal as having no basis.

Test a previous year when changing products

If you are moving from one tax program to another, import a completed prior year and compare transaction counts, proceeds, basis, short- and long-term totals, and carryforward losses. A matching current-year total is not enough if the new ledger handles an old lot differently.

Which features matter for different kinds of crypto activity?

Match capabilities to how you use digital assets. A buy-and-hold investor and a liquidity-pool user should not shop from the same checklist.

Simple investors

Someone who buys, holds, and occasionally sells on one or two exchanges usually needs reliable exchange imports, fee handling, transfer recognition, cost-basis method selection, and Form 8949/Schedule D output. Portfolio charts are useful, but they should not outweigh an accurate ledger.

Active traders

Frequent traders should compare transaction limits after duplicate removal and transfer grouping, lot-selection controls, fee treatment, performance views, and the ability to download detailed CSV files. Confirm whether a plan counts every raw blockchain row or only the cleaned transactions that remain taxable; vendors define limits differently.

DeFi, staking, lending, NFTs, and airdrops

Verify support for swaps, bridges, liquidity pools, lending, borrowing, staking rewards, airdrops, NFT purchases and sales, mining, and chain-specific contract activity. Koinly lists DeFi/NFT, margin, mining, staking, lending, and airdrop support. CoinTracker documents DeFi categorization and transfer-based basis reconstruction. Feature names do not guarantee correct treatment for every protocol, so inspect sample transactions and be prepared to override classifications.

Margin and derivative-like activity

Margin trades can combine collateral movements, interest, liquidations, and disposals. Ask whether the importer distinguishes those events and whether the resulting report is accepted by your tax professional. If the ledger cannot explain a liquidation or negative balance, professional review is safer than silently accepting a default classification.

What reports and filing handoffs should I require?

Before purchasing, open the report list for the exact tax year and jurisdiction. For a U.S. individual, look for Form 8949 data, Schedule D totals, income summaries for rewards or other taxable receipts, and a transaction-level audit report.

  • Download formats: PDF is convenient for review; CSV or other structured exports help a preparer reconcile rows and import data into tax software.
  • Filing integrations: confirm whether the product sends data directly to the filing program you use or merely gives you a report to enter manually.
  • 1099-DA workflow: the product should allow broker proceeds and basis to be compared with its internal ledger, with adjustments documented.
  • Professional access: a preparer portal or shareable audit trail can reduce back-and-forth when a CPA reviews exceptions.

CoinTracker documents report downloads, TurboTax and H&R Block connections, and tax-professional access, but also states that it does not provide tax filing or preparation. Treat similar products as reporting tools unless their contract explicitly includes preparation.

How do CoinTracker and Koinly compare on price and transaction limits?

Use the number of imported transactions after spam filtering, duplicate removal, and transfer grouping. The following figures are listed on the vendors’ 2026 pricing pages and can change.

Product and tier Published price Published transaction allowance Notable positioning
CoinTracker Base $59 per year Up to 100 transactions Entry-level reporting and portfolio tools
CoinTracker Prime $199 per year Up to 1,000 transactions Higher volume and additional tax features
CoinTracker Ultra $599 per year Up to 10,000 transactions Higher-volume users, with larger variants listed
CoinTracker Full Service Starts at $3,499 per year Not stated Professional-service option; confirm scope before purchase
Koinly Newbie $49 for the tax year 100 transactions One-time tax-year purchase model
Koinly Hodler $99 for the tax year 1,000 transactions For lower-volume portfolios
Koinly Trader From $199 for the tax year 3,000 or more, with additional packages For active traders and larger histories

Koinly describes payment by tax year rather than an automatic subscription. CoinTracker presents a tiered annual path, including plans with higher transaction counts. Compare the price of the first tier that covers your cleaned history and required reports, not the headline entry price.

Is CoinTracker a good fit for my transaction history?

CoinTracker is a practical candidate when you want a broad integration network, portfolio tracking, automatic transfer matching, and a path to higher transaction limits. Its pricing page lists more than 500 integrations, API and CSV imports, cost-basis reconstruction, DeFi categorization, Form 8949 and Schedule D, and TurboTax/H&R Block integrations.

Free access provides portfolio and tax-summary previews, but downloadable tax forms require a paid tier. Check the limit on the exact plan you need and whether your wallets, chains, and historical years are included. Because the service says it does not file or prepare your return, plan for your own filing workflow or a separate tax professional.

Is Koinly a good fit for international or complex activity?

Koinly is worth testing when one-time, transaction-tiered pricing and international reporting are priorities. It lists exchange API and CSV imports, smart transfer matching, audit and reconciliation features, FIFO, LIFO, and average-cost choices, Form 8949 and Schedule D, and reports for multiple countries.

Its activity list includes DeFi, NFTs, margin, mining, staking, lending, and airdrops. Downloadable reports require a paid tax-year plan, and high transaction counts may require extra packages. Confirm the forms, currency, cost-basis rules, and tax-year availability for your country before relying on a generated report.

How do I choose a plan step by step?

  1. Define the scope. Write down every exchange, wallet, chain, protocol, tax year, and country involved.
  2. Shortlist two products. Favor products that document your required integrations, forms, and cost-basis methods.
  3. Run full previews. Import complete histories into both products before paying, using free previews where offered.
  4. Clean the ledgers. Resolve unmatched transfers, duplicate rows, negative balances, missing acquisition dates, implausible prices, and spam or dust entries.
  5. Reconcile Form 1099-DA. Compare broker proceeds and basis with the software ledger and investigate every variance.
  6. Confirm deliverables. Verify Form 8949, Schedule D, income summaries, audit trail, PDF/CSV exports, and any filing-software handoff.
  7. Select the lowest suitable tier. Base the decision on the post-cleanup transaction count and required features, not the exchange’s displayed trade count.
  8. Archive your evidence. Save source CSVs, API exports, adjustment notes, transaction IDs, and generated reports with the tax-year records.
  9. Escalate unresolved issues. Ask a crypto-knowledgeable CPA or enrolled agent to review missing basis, complex DeFi income, foreign matters, amended returns, or very high-volume activity.

Which tax method and country settings should I verify?

Country support is more than translating a report. Confirm the local forms, reporting currency, cost-basis rules, and permitted methods before importing a large history. Depending on jurisdiction, software may offer FIFO, LIFO, HIFO, average cost, adjusted-cost-base (ACB), or specific identification; the legally acceptable choice is not universal.

Koinly advertises international reports and multiple methods, while CoinTracker says it supports filers in more than 40 countries. Treat those statements as starting points and check your country’s current guidance and the software’s tax-year release. A report designed for another jurisdiction may have correct arithmetic but the wrong form or accounting convention.

What are the most common failure modes?

  • Buying before importing: a plan that looks inexpensive can exceed its limit once every wallet and old lot is included.
  • Counting transfers as sales: an unmatched withdrawal and deposit can create phantom gains.
  • Trusting a single exchange export: exchange data may omit self-custody wallets, protocol events, or earlier acquisitions.
  • Ignoring negative balances: they often signal missing deposits, duplicate removals, wrong timestamps, or an unsupported contract interaction.
  • Assuming a 1099-DA is complete: the statement covers broker-reported activity, not necessarily every wallet or DeFi transaction.
  • Using the wrong tax year: forms and digital-asset boxes change, so an older report can be unsuitable for a current return.
  • Leaving complex classifications unreviewed: staking, lending, airdrops, NFTs, margin, and liquidity pools can combine income and capital events that require judgment.

Keep a written note for every manual adjustment. If you cannot explain a line from source data through its final report, pause filing and obtain professional help.

What is the practical decision rule?

Choose the product that imports all of your sources, matches transfers with the fewest unexplained exceptions, preserves basis across years, supports the methods and forms your jurisdiction requires, and produces files your preparer or filing software can use. For a straightforward U.S. portfolio, either a basic CoinTracker or Koinly tier may be adequate after reconciliation. For international reporting, one-time tax-year pricing, or broad DeFi coverage, Koinly’s documented feature set may be more attractive; for a large integration network, portfolio tracking, and tiered higher-volume plans, CoinTracker may fit better. In both cases, the quality of the cleaned ledger matters more than the brand or the lowest advertised price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Form 1099-DA mean I can skip crypto tax software?

Not necessarily. The statement covers information reported by a broker, while taxable activity in self-custody wallets, DeFi protocols, or other exchanges may still be absent. Use the statement to reconcile proceeds and basis, then confirm whether the IRS exception described in the applicable instructions actually applies to your transactions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if my software shows a negative crypto balance?

Stop before generating forms and trace the asset back to its first acquisition. Check for a missing deposit, an accidental duplicate deletion, a transfer whose other side was not imported, or a contract event the importer does not understand; document any manual correction.

Can I change crypto tax software after filing last year?

Yes, but export the prior ledger, source files, adjustment notes, and loss carryforwards before switching. Import a completed year into the new product and compare totals and lot details so a different matching rule does not alter the basis carried into the current return.

When should I hire a crypto tax professional instead of relying on a report?

Use a CPA or enrolled agent when basis is missing, activity spans several countries, you have substantial DeFi, lending, staking, NFTs, margin or airdrops, you need an amended return, or the software leaves material exceptions unresolved. Give the professional the raw exports and the software’s audit trail, not only the final totals.
