In return, it offers a larger 6.9-inch screen, Apple’s A20 Pro chip, a variable-aperture 48MP main camera and storage options up to 2TB. The iPhone 17 is smaller and lighter, and its listed configurations start at 256GB. These are different sizes and product tiers, so the better fit depends on whether the Pro Max’s screen, camera features and extra storage matter enough to justify its higher price and weight.

How much more does the iPhone 18 Pro Max cost?
Apple’s U.S. shop lists the iPhone 17 from $899 and the iPhone 18 Pro Max from $1,299. The difference between those displayed starting prices is $400, calculated from Apple’s listings; it is not a separately published Apple figure. Since the starting price does not identify a matching storage configuration, check the price for the exact capacity you want before treating the gap as a like-for-like comparison.
Those figures are U.S. prices. Prices, promotions, inventory and availability can differ by region and retailer. Trade-in credits or carrier offers may also change what you pay, so compare the final price and terms for your location rather than assuming the listed gap applies to every buyer.

What the larger display and extra weight mean
The Pro Max’s 6.9-inch OLED display gives more room for video, games, reading and multitasking than the iPhone 17’s 6.3-inch OLED. That extra screen area comes with a substantial weight increase: the Pro Max weighs 249 g, compared with 177 g for the iPhone 17. If you often use your phone one-handed, carry it in a small pocket or prefer a lighter device, the standard iPhone 17 is the more compact option. If screen size is a priority, the Pro Max makes the trade-off explicit rather than hiding it in a small spec difference.
Camera systems and chipsets
Camera hardware
Apple specifies a dual 48MP Fusion camera system for iPhone 17, with Main and Ultra Wide cameras. For the iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple highlights a 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture and its Pro camera positioning. The available specifications establish those hardware distinctions, but they do not by themselves demonstrate how much better one phone’s photos or video look in practice.

Processing
The iPhone 17 uses Apple’s A19 chip; the iPhone 18 Pro Max uses A20 Pro. Those names identify different chip tiers, but a specification comparison alone cannot establish real-world performance, battery life or the size of any advantage for a particular workload. Buyers choosing between them should treat Apple’s feature descriptions as manufacturer information, not as independent comparative test results.
Storage options and launch availability
Apple lists the iPhone 17 in 256GB and 512GB configurations. The iPhone 18 Pro Max adds 1TB and 2TB options, which may suit people who keep large libraries of photos, video or downloaded content on their phone. Apple announced that iPhone 18 Pro Max availability began September 18, 2026, in more than 65 countries and regions, with four capacities: 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB. Check Apple’s local store for current stock and regional availability.

Before buying, compare the exact storage tier, local price and any trade-in or carrier offer. Apple lists cases for specific iPhone models, so choose a case made for the exact phone rather than assuming an iPhone 17 case will fit the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
