Older models may have a dedicated Power key, and many newer models also offer a power icon in Quick Settings. But reaching the menu does not guarantee that a locked phone will shut down without its PIN, password, or pattern: Samsung says some locked devices require that credential and, if it is forgotten, will turn off when the battery runs out.

If your model has a dedicated Power button, press and hold it to open the power menu, then choose and confirm Power off.

Button layouts and Side-button behavior vary by Galaxy model and software version. If holding the Side button opens Bixby instead, supported models let you change its press-and-hold action in Settings > Advanced features > Side button; the exact menu names can differ.
Use Quick Settings
If the screen and touch controls work, swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers to open Quick Settings. Tap the power icon near Settings, choose Power off, and confirm. Samsung documents this route for many, but not all, Galaxy phones.

What if the locked phone asks for a password?
A button combination can open the power menu, but it is not a dependable way to bypass the lock credential. Samsung UK warns that a locked device may ask for its PIN, password, or pattern before powering down. If you have forgotten that credential, Samsung says the device will switch off when its battery runs out.

Reports of this setting and its behavior are model-dependent; check your own phone’s lock-screen security settings rather than assuming the option is available or works the same way on every device.

If the phone is frozen, use a forced button hold
If the phone is unresponsive, press and hold the Power or Side button together with Volume Down. Samsung describes this as a simulated battery pull that may take up to 60 seconds; other Samsung instructions describe holding the buttons for longer than seven seconds as a forced restart. The phone may restart rather than remain off, so this is troubleshooting for a frozen device, not a guaranteed password-free shutdown.
A forced restart does not remove the lock. Samsung says a phone or tablet secured with biometrics will require its backup password or PIN after rebooting.

Choose the route that fits the problem

When the documented steps do not work
If the phone will not turn off using the available controls, contact Samsung Support. Avoid treating factory reset, recovery mode, or an improvised button sequence as a shutdown workaround: those are different actions and may affect your data.
