For most players who own compatible Nintendo 3DS hardware, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D is the most complete single choice. It remakes the original adventure, adds touch and motion controls, and includes Master Quest after you finish the main game. Choose the original Ocarina of Time if preserving the classic presentation matters more than updated features. Choose Master Quest when your priority is a tougher, rearranged dungeon challenge rather than a different story.

Hardware can settle the question before preferences do. The 3D edition is designed for Nintendo 3DS systems and its distinctive features depend on that system’s touch screen, gyroscope, and dual-screen layout. If you cannot use compatible 3DS hardware, those controls and the bundled 3DS version of Master Quest are not available to you through that edition.
What changed in the Nintendo 3DS eShop?
Nintendo’s UK product information states that purchases through the Nintendo 3DS eShop ended on March 27, 2023. That date means you should not plan around buying a new digital copy from that store. Gyro-assisted first-person aiming
Nintendo lists gyro-assisted aiming for first-person actions. Moving the 3DS can supplement the ordinary controls when lining up a shot or looking around in an aiming view. It is an optional control style, so the remake does not require you to replace button input with motion for every action.
Remade graphics
The visual presentation is rebuilt for the 3DS rather than preserved pixel for pixel. Select this edition when cleaner, remade visuals are part of the appeal; select the standard original when the historical appearance is itself important.
Hint videos
Nintendo also added hint videos. They provide an in-game way to get direction when you are stuck, which can reduce the need to leave the game for an external walkthrough. Players seeking a completely self-guided first run can simply avoid using the hints.

Mirrored world in the 3DS version
In the Nintendo 3DS implementation, the world is mirrored. Directions, landmarks, and visual memory can therefore feel reversed even when the broad geography is recognizable. Double damage in the 3DS implementation
Enemies inflict double damage in 3DS Master Quest. Nintendo producer Eiji Aonuma explained the design in an Iwata Asks interview: “But I didn’t think it would be that challenging if it were the same as in the original, so Link takes double damage.” The change makes mistakes more costly and turns familiar encounters into a stronger test of preparation and execution.
When the mode unlocks
On 3DS, Master Quest unlocks after you complete the main game. It is consequently a poor fit if you want to begin with the altered dungeons immediately, but it works well as a second pass after the standard campaign has established the locations and mechanics.
Who should choose the original Ocarina of Time?

Expecting a new digital 3DS eShop purchase
Nintendo lists March 27, 2023 as the end of 3DS eShop purchases. Search for a legitimate physical copy or another lawful way to play an edition you already own rather than planning around a new purchase from that storefront.
Choosing by graphics alone
