Choose cloud-provider-native security tools when one cloud dominates your estate and you want deep integration with its services, identity, logs, and configuration controls. Choose a third-party platform—often a cloud-native application protection platform (CNAPP)—when you need a consistent view across multiple clouds or hybrid environments, or want to connect risks from code and identity through runtime. These approaches are not mutually exclusive: many teams use native tools for provider-specific depth and a third-party platform to normalize and prioritize findings across the estate.
The right choice depends less on which category sounds more comprehensive than on what you need to secure, what your team can operate, and which measurable gap remains after using the controls you already have.

Native tools are provided by a cloud provider and are designed to work with that provider’s services and security data. A third-party platform connects to cloud environments and other tools to provide capabilities such as cross-cloud visibility, risk correlation, or application protection across more of the development lifecycle.
The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) recommends adapting security to cloud platforms and using managed services to address common problems. That does not mean relying only on the provider’s tools: the NCSC also distinguishes provider-native and third-party approaches, each with different strengths and operating costs.

| Decision area | Provider-native tools | Third-party platform |
|---|---|---|
| Integration | Tight integration with one provider’s identity, logs, configuration APIs, and managed services. | Can normalize information from multiple providers and tools; coverage and reliability depend on connectors and the permissions granted. |
| Coverage | Often deepest for that provider’s own services, although relevant capabilities may be spread across products or consoles. | Can offer a broader cross-cloud view and correlate signals. Verify support for each cloud, account, region, workload, and service you actually use. |
| Operations | May be simpler to start if the team already works in that cloud, but still calls for provider-specific expertise. | May reduce console sprawl while adding a vendor, deployment model, data pipeline, and cost center. |
| Application lifecycle | Strong for provider-specific configuration and telemetry; depth varies by service. | A CNAPP may connect signals from code, CI/CD, posture, identity, vulnerabilities, and runtime. |
| Portability | Can increase dependence on provider-specific APIs and policy languages. | Can reduce dependence on a single cloud-security console, while creating reliance on the platform’s connectors, data model, and pricing. |
| Assurance | Assess provider certifications, attestations, and service documentation alongside your own controls. | Ask for that evidence too, plus product-specific information about control mappings, data handling, isolation, and incident-response commitments. |
Neither category removes the need to understand what is covered and who operates it. A broad platform label is not proof that a particular service, region, or workload is supported, and a native feature is not automatically enabled or configured correctly.
What do CSPM, CWPP, CIEM, DSPM, and CNAPP mean?
These terms describe related security capabilities, not interchangeable names for one complete product. A cloud security posture management tool can help identify configuration risks, but CSPM alone does not establish that runtime, entitlement, or sensitive-data risks are covered.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- CSPM (cloud security posture management): The NCSC describes CSPM tools as continuously monitoring, assessing, and improving cloud security posture. They collect resource and configuration data, evaluate it against policies, flag misconfigurations, and offer remediation advice.
- CWPP (cloud workload protection platform): The NCSC distinguishes CWPP as protection for workloads such as containers and virtual machines, including runtime protection.
- CIEM (cloud infrastructure entitlement management): A capability focused on cloud permissions and entitlements. It can help teams examine access and identity-related risk; assess the specific identity coverage and actions a product provides rather than relying on the acronym alone.
- DSPM (data security posture management): The NCSC distinguishes DSPM as a function concerned with protecting sensitive data.
- CNAPP (cloud-native application protection platform): A broader platform category intended to bring together cloud and application security capabilities. The NCSC describes CNAPP as aggregating CSPM, DSPM, CWPP, and other functions. Microsoft Security’s vendor definition emphasizes unified visibility, protection, and risk prioritization for cloud-native applications from build through runtime.
OWASP’s DevSecOps Guideline describes cloud-native applications as spanning containers, Kubernetes, serverless, and managed services. It presents CNAPP as an approach that brings posture management and runtime protection together across code, cloud, and workloads. Use that lifecycle framing to ask whether a platform connects the signals your team needs—not simply whether it lists a long set of modules.
Which approach fits a single-cloud, multicloud, or hybrid estate?
Start by mapping where workloads run and how they are operated. A dominant cloud with mostly managed services generally strengthens the case for native controls; multiple clouds, acquisitions, or on-premises dependencies increase the value of a third-party control plane that can provide cross-environment visibility.

One dominant cloud
Begin with the provider’s available controls if your security needs are concentrated in that environment and your team can manage the provider’s consoles and policies. Check whether the controls cover the services in use, whether teams can act on findings in their normal workflow, and whether any remaining gap warrants another product. A single-cloud estate can still need a third-party tool for a specific capability; it does not automatically need a broad platform.
Multiple clouds or acquired environments
A third-party platform becomes more attractive when teams need consistent reporting or policy views across cloud providers. It may help security staff compare findings and prioritize risk without treating every provider’s terminology and console as a separate operating model. Before relying on that view, verify coverage for every account, region, service, and workload, and confirm what each connector can actually read or change.
Hybrid environments
On-premises dependencies can make a unified control plane useful, particularly if teams need to see cloud and non-cloud assets together. However, “hybrid support” is not a sufficient specification: ask which environments and asset types are included, which signals are collected, and whether the same controls and reporting apply across them.
These are starting points, not rules that dictate a purchase. The NCSC notes that cloud-native services can create technical lock-in, so also consider whether provider-specific policies and APIs would be difficult to move or maintain if the estate changes.

Should you use native tools and a third-party platform together?
Often, yes. A layered model can retain provider-native tools for deep service-specific telemetry while using a third-party platform to normalize findings and prioritize risk across providers or lifecycle stages.
Layering is useful when each product has a distinct job. For example, a team might use a provider’s controls for configuration and telemetry in its main cloud while evaluating a third-party platform for cross-cloud reporting or code-to-runtime context. The example describes a design choice, not a claim that any particular product has been tested or that every combination will integrate cleanly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWithout clear ownership, layering can instead create duplicated alerts, overlapping costs, and uncertainty about which system is authoritative. Before adding a platform, decide which tool owns policy definitions, finding triage, remediation, and evidence for audits. Define how duplicate findings will be handled and which system sends actionable tickets to engineering teams.
Do not assume a CNAPP replaces every native control or that installing one consolidates every security workflow. A platform can only correlate information it can access, and the quality of the result depends on supported integrations, permissions, and data handling.

How do you decide whether a CNAPP or another platform fills a real gap?
Translate the problem into a control or workflow you can evaluate. Buy for a named shortcoming—such as inconsistent cross-cloud posture reporting, attack-path context, container runtime protection, entitlement analysis, sensitive-data discovery, or CI/CD and software-supply-chain coverage—rather than buying a broad platform because its category sounds comprehensive.
- Describe the risk or operational problem. State what is missing, who needs to act on it, and what an improved result would look like. “We need fewer consoles” is not yet a security outcome; identify the decisions or findings that are currently being missed or handled inconsistently.
- Map existing coverage. List tools, enabled capabilities, environments, and the teams responsible for them. Identify overlap as well as uncovered services or lifecycle stages.
- Map responsibility. The NCSC describes the cloud shared responsibility model as a way to clarify who looks after the security of data and services. Establish which obligations remain yours for configuration, identity, data, and workloads before judging a platform’s coverage.
- Set acceptance measures before deployment. Choose measures relevant to the gap: coverage of representative assets, false-positive rate, time to remediate, analyst effort, and total cost. Decide what would count as improvement and what would cause you to reject the product.
- Run a bounded proof of value. Use representative accounts and workloads rather than a handpicked, unusually clean sample. Keep the evaluation limited enough to compare results and operating effort within a defined period.
- Review the operating model. Test required permissions, agent or agentless requirements, data flow, latency, finding noise, remediation safety, ticketing, SIEM/SOAR integrations, and the skills needed to tune policies.
- Make a keep, change, or stop decision. Compare the observed results with your preset measures. Retain only capabilities that improve a control or workflow enough to justify their operational and financial burden.
A proof of value is not just a feature demonstration. It should reveal whether the platform sees the assets you care about, produces findings your team can use, and fits the way remediation is actually performed.

How should you evaluate coverage, permissions, and remediation risk?
Ask vendors to demonstrate the exact paths from data collection to a useful security action. A connector may provide visibility without remediation rights, or it may need broader permissions than your team is prepared to grant. Treat those differences as design and governance decisions.
- Coverage by asset: Check cloud provider, account, region, service, workload type, and relevant lifecycle stage. Ask how unsupported or partially supported assets appear in reports.
- Collection method: Establish which components require agents, which are agentless, and what data each method collects. Agentless does not mean permission-free, and an agent requirement can affect rollout and maintenance.
- Permission scope: Review read and write permissions separately. Determine whether least-privilege access is possible and who approves changes to the integration.
- Finding quality: Use representative workloads to assess duplicate alerts, noisy or low-context findings, and how well the product explains why an issue matters.
- Remediation safety: Prefer a review and approval path for changes with operational impact. Validate how automated fixes are scoped, logged, and reversed before allowing them to change production resources.
- Workflow fit: Check whether findings reach the ticketing, SIEM, or SOAR systems teams already use, and whether ownership and status remain clear after handoff.
- Data handling: Understand what the platform collects, where it is processed, who can access it, and what commitments apply to isolation and incident response.
For assurance, the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security recommends using independent certifications or attestations for controls customers cannot directly assess, and continuously monitoring customer-managed controls. Provider assurances and a platform vendor’s assurance are not substitutes for reviewing the controls your organization is responsible for.

What do current surveys say—and what can’t they tell you?
Recent survey figures show that organizations are using different security operating models, but they do not prove which model is best for your estate. Treat them as context for the market, not as a product-selection rule.
| Finding | Publisher and qualification |
|---|---|
| 73% of organizations favor native cloud-provider security tools. | Google Cloud’s State of Cloud Security report page, published or accessed in 2026; the same page says integrated third-party solutions remain important for complex multicloud and hybrid environments. |
| 40% are most concerned about generative-AI security risks and data pipelines; 38% cite software-supply-chain vulnerabilities as their greatest risk; 91% are increasing cloud-security spending. | Google Cloud’s State of Cloud Security report page, published or accessed in 2026. These percentages describe reported concerns and spending direction, not measured product effectiveness. |
| 93% run production workloads in the cloud, while 40% call their cloud-security program mature. | SANS Institute survey announcement in 2026. |
| 21% use a single consolidated CNAPP, 31% maintain separate CSPM/CWPP/CIEM point solutions, and 23% are evaluating consolidation. | SANS Institute survey announcement in 2026. |
The combination of cloud adoption and lower self-reported program maturity is a reason to examine operational capability, not simply to add another product. Similarly, the SANS figures show that organizations continue to use both consolidated platforms and separate tools; they do not establish that consolidation reduces risk or cost in every case. The survey publishers and years matter: percentages from Google Cloud and SANS should not be merged or attributed to one another.

Most poor choices come from treating a product category as a guarantee of coverage or assuming that a purchase transfers security responsibility.
- Equating CSPM with a full CNAPP: CSPM focuses on posture and configuration. It does not by itself establish coverage for runtime workloads, sensitive data, or entitlements.
- Assuming “multicloud” means complete coverage: Validate specific provider services, accounts, regions, workload types, and integration permissions.
- Replacing controls without checking responsibility: A platform does not make customer obligations for identity, configuration, data, or workloads disappear.
- Buying overlapping modules without a measured benefit: Compare the proposed capability with existing controls and remove overlap that does not improve a defined outcome.
- Turning on automatic remediation too early: Start with reviewable changes, validate behavior on representative resources, and establish an approval and rollback process.
- Ignoring lock-in on either side: Native tools can deepen reliance on provider-specific APIs and policy languages; third-party tools can create reliance on a vendor’s connectors, data model, and pricing.
- Confusing assurance with customer-side control: Certifications and attestations provide evidence about controls, but customer-managed configurations still require continuous monitoring.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a CNAPP replace CSPM?
No. A CNAPP may include CSPM capabilities alongside other functions, but the label alone does not confirm which modules are included or enabled. Check the product’s actual coverage and contract for the capabilities you need.
Can I use a CNAPP without installing agents?
Some collection paths may be agentless, while other workloads or runtime functions may require agents. Ask which assets and signals each method covers, what permissions it requires, and whether coverage changes when an agent is not deployed.
How can I compare cloud security platforms fairly?
Give each candidate the same representative accounts, workloads, and evaluation period, then apply acceptance measures chosen in advance. Include analyst effort and total cost alongside coverage and finding quality so the comparison reflects operational impact.
Recommended Free Tools
Who is responsible if a cloud security platform misses a misconfiguration?
Responsibility depends on the cloud service and the controls your organization has assigned, not simply on whether a third-party platform was purchased. Review the shared-responsibility arrangements and your own control ownership, then confirm what monitoring and escalation processes are in place.
