Choose antivirus software that combines real-time protection, cloud-delivered intelligence and behavior-based detection—not just a database of known malware signatures. It should also offer protection against malicious network destinations, automatic security-intelligence updates, and full and offline scan options. On Windows 10 and 11, Microsoft Defender Antivirus already provides this baseline; consider paid software when it adds features, support or management you actually need.

What should antivirus do to detect cryptocurrency miners?

Cryptomining malware, also called cryptojacking, secretly uses a device’s or network’s processing power to mine cryptocurrency. The Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC), in its guidance Learn about cryptomining malware, warns that this can slow devices, increase running costs and affect operations. Good antivirus should be able to spot suspicious activity as well as recognize known malicious files.

Miner malware can change, arrive through different routes or run in ways that make a file-only check insufficient. Microsoft’s 2026 threat research describes a campaign in which poisoned search results and disguised utility downloads delivered GPU miners. That is why a useful protection package combines several layers rather than relying on a single “miner detection” feature. The campaign also illustrates why a familiar-looking download result is not enough to establish that a utility is trustworthy.

Behavior and cloud detection

Static signatures identify files matching known patterns. They remain useful, but should be paired with behavior monitoring and cloud-delivered protection, which can help identify suspicious activity or threats that are new or changing. Microsoft describes Defender as using anomaly detection, machine learning, cloud-delivered protection and behavior or process-tree blocking.

When comparing products, look for clear explanations of these capabilities. A label such as “AI-powered” or “cryptominer protection” is not, by itself, evidence of how the product detects a threat or how well it performs. The cited Microsoft and government guidance does not provide a current independent detection-rate ranking, so it would be misleading to name a single best detector.

In practice, compare the detection layers as a package: signatures can catch recognized threats, while behavior monitoring and cloud intelligence add ways to respond to unfamiliar or changing activity. Ask whether the vendor describes what is monitored and how protection is updated, rather than treating a marketing label as a technical specification. No single feature guarantees that a miner will be found.

Real-time and network protection

Real-time protection checks files and programs as they are accessed or run, instead of waiting for a scheduled scan. Network or web protection can help block connections to malicious destinations. Those controls matter because a miner can be delivered through a download or other online activity, as the campaign described by Microsoft in 2026 illustrates.

Check whether protection is enabled by default, whether it covers downloaded files and running programs, and whether network protection is included on your operating system. Feature names differ between products, so compare what the control actually covers rather than assuming similar names mean identical protection. If you use more than one type of device, check coverage for each platform instead of assuming one license or feature works identically everywhere.

Scan depth and recovery options

Scheduled and on-demand scans are useful, but look for more than a quick scan. A full scan is the appropriate choice when you suspect an infection. On Windows, Microsoft Defender also offers quick, full, custom and Microsoft Defender Offline scans. Offline scanning restarts the PC into the Windows Recovery Environment so it can scan outside the normal Windows session. That can help when persistent malware may be able to hide during an ordinary session.

These modes serve different purposes. A quick scan is one available option for routine checking, while a full scan is the recommended choice when an infection is suspected. A custom scan lets you select what to check; the offline option is specifically useful when you are concerned that a threat may persist or hide during a regular Windows session. Before starting an offline scan, save your work and close open applications because the PC will restart.

Automatic updates and safe defaults

Antivirus protection depends on receiving current security intelligence. Prefer a product that updates its intelligence automatically and keeps cloud protection enabled. Microsoft says cloud-delivered protection and automatic sample submission improve protection; sample-submission settings can involve sending files to Microsoft for analysis, so review the product’s privacy controls if you need to understand what may be shared.

Also check that updates are not left to occasional manual attention. Ask whether intelligence updates and cloud features can remain enabled on the operating system you use. If a product lets you control sample submission, read the relevant privacy setting and decide whether it fits your needs; do not assume every product handles submissions the same way.

How do I compare antivirus products for miner protection?

Compare how products protect and recover a device, then weigh that against platform compatibility, management needs and cost. The word “antivirus” alone does not tell you whether a product has the controls you need.

What to compare What to check Why it matters
Detection approach Whether the product combines signatures with behavior monitoring, cloud intelligence or other described detection methods Known-file matching alone may not identify new or changing threats.
Real-time protection Whether files and programs are checked as they are accessed or run It can respond to activity before you start a manual scan.
Web and network protection Whether the product can block malicious network destinations Downloads and online activity can be part of a malware delivery route.
Scan and recovery choices Whether it provides full scans and, where supported, an offline scan A full scan suits suspected infection; an offline scan can be useful if persistence is a concern.
Update discipline Whether security intelligence updates automatically and cloud protection can remain enabled Out-of-date intelligence can leave protection less able to recognize changing threats.
Compatibility Supported operating systems and whether the product implements AMSI on Windows A product must fit the device, and the UK National Cyber Security Centre advises preferring Windows products that implement the Anti-Malware Scan Interface.
Management and added controls Whether you need central management, ransomware or attack-surface controls, or support These may justify a paid product even when a built-in antivirus is sufficient for basic protection.
Performance and total license cost How the product affects your devices and the full cost for the license duration and devices covered Compare the terms that apply to your platform and household or organization, not just a headline feature or initial price.

Ask vendors or consult their product documentation for details that are not clear, including operating-system coverage, how web protection works, what management is included and the license’s renewal terms. Compare the exact edition you would buy: platform support, scan modes, included devices, management and support can vary by product and plan. Consider the effect on performance as well as protection, especially if the device is already used for demanding work. These are comparison questions, not a claim that one product has a particular performance impact.

Compare total license cost, not just a promotional starting price. Check the price for the license duration, the number and type of devices covered, renewal terms and availability in your country. Do not assume an offer or feature applies to every edition or region. No current prices or product-by-product feature matrix are established by the named sources, so verify those details for the particular listing before buying.

On Windows, the UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) advises preferring products that implement the Anti-Malware Scan Interface (AMSI). The NCSC also cautions against running more than one real-time antivirus product on a device. Compatibility matters both for whether the product supports your platform and whether it can coexist safely with the operating system’s existing protection.

Is built-in antivirus enough, or should I pay for another product?

For many Windows users, Microsoft Defender Antivirus is a credible baseline: Windows 10 and 11 include it, and it provides real-time, cloud, machine-learning and behavior-based protection, along with multiple scan modes. Microsoft Learn’s Microsoft Defender Antivirus in Windows Overview states: “Microsoft Defender Antivirus is built into Windows, and it works with Microsoft Defender for Endpoint to provide protection on your device and in the cloud.” A paid product is worth considering if it supplies a specific capability, support arrangement or management option that you need and the built-in protection does not provide.

Option What is established What to decide
Microsoft Defender Antivirus on Windows 10 or 11 Built into Windows; includes real-time, cloud and behavior-based protection and quick, full, custom and offline scan modes. Check that protection and automatic intelligence updates are enabled, and whether its controls meet your needs.
Commercial antivirus The UK NCSC notes that commercial products may add features useful to particular users. It names McAfee, Norton and Avast as examples. Compare the specific edition’s platform coverage, management, added controls, support and licensing. No current detection ranking or price is established by the cited guidance.

Do not buy a second antivirus simply to run alongside the first one. The NCSC’s Device security guidance says: “We don’t recommend using more than one AV product on any device, the security benefit of doing so is minimal and the products may conflict with each other, potentially causing device stability issues.” If you choose a replacement, follow the vendors’ instructions for removing or disabling the previous real-time product so only one is actively protecting the device.

Windows, macOS and Android include built-in antivirus, according to the NCSC, but what is included and how it works differs by operating system. Do not assume that a Windows feature or scan mode is also available on a Mac or Android device. Confirm support for the exact platform and version you use before paying.

If you want to compare a commercial option, McAfee, Norton and Avast are examples the NCSC identifies; that is not a ranking or endorsement. For instance, you can compare a Norton listing with your built-in option, but verify the current product edition, seller, region, license duration, devices covered and renewal terms before purchase. A product’s presence on a retailer’s site does not establish its detection performance or make every edition suitable for your devices.

How can I check whether a device may be cryptojacked?

Look into unexplained, sustained CPU or GPU use, excess heat, louder or more frequent fan activity, increased power use or a noticeable performance drop. The ACSC identifies processing use, slowdowns, running costs and operational impact as concerns. These symptoms are investigation signals, not proof: legitimate applications and ordinary heavy workloads can also use substantial processing power.

  • Consider whether the change began after installing an unfamiliar utility, opening a download or visiting a suspicious site.
  • Check whether high resource use continues when you are not intentionally running a demanding application.
  • Use your antivirus to investigate rather than treating one symptom—or a single alert—as a definitive diagnosis.

The ACSC’s guidance describes the consequences of cryptomining malware, but symptoms alone cannot identify the cause. If the device is managed by an employer or organization, report the issue through its IT or security process rather than removing software or changing controls without authorization. A sudden change in resource use can justify a scan, but it cannot tell you by itself whether the cause is a miner, another program or a routine workload.

What should I do if I suspect a miner?

Update protection, run a full scan and review what the antivirus found. If you are concerned that malware may persist or hide during a normal Windows session, run Microsoft Defender Offline. Do not restore a detected item or create an exclusion just to make an alert disappear.

  1. Update protection. In your antivirus settings, check for security-intelligence updates. Keep real-time and cloud-delivered protection enabled where available.
  2. Run a full scan. In Windows Security, choose the full-scan option rather than relying only on a quick scan when infection is suspected. Allow the scan to finish and review its results.
  3. Use an offline scan if persistence is a concern. In Windows Security, select Microsoft Defender Offline. The PC restarts into the Windows Recovery Environment for scanning, so save work and close open applications first.
  4. Review the antivirus history. Check Protection History, quarantined items, allowed threats and exclusions. Confirm what the product detected and what action it took.
  5. Remove untrusted software and downloads. Uninstall unfamiliar or untrusted utilities and remove downloads you do not trust. Avoid re-opening or reinstalling them while investigating.
  6. Patch the system and applications. Install available operating-system and application updates through their normal update mechanisms.

Microsoft warns that exclusions stop real-time checking for the paths or files excluded. Do not allow a quarantined item or add an exclusion unless you have verified that the file and its publisher are trusted. If the antivirus cannot remove a threat, the infection returns, or the device belongs to an organization, get help from the relevant IT or security support team.

After the scan, use the antivirus’s results and history to understand what action it took rather than assuming that a scan alone resolved the issue. Keep protection enabled while you update the device and remove untrusted downloads. If you cannot identify a file’s publisher or determine whether an alert is legitimate, do not add an exclusion or restore the item just to continue using it; seek help from the vendor or your organization’s support team.

How can I avoid installing a miner in the first place?

Be cautious with utility downloads found through sponsored or unfamiliar search results. Microsoft’s 2026 threat research describes attackers using poisoned search results and disguised utility downloads to install GPU miners, making the download source and file legitimacy important parts of prevention.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Download software from its official publisher or a trusted distribution channel, not an unfamiliar result that merely resembles one.
  • Check that the publisher and application match what you intended to install before running a download.
  • Keep operating-system and application updates current, and leave real-time and cloud protection enabled.
  • Do not bypass an antivirus warning or create an exclusion for a utility simply because a download page says it is safe.

Search placement is not a trust signal: the 2026 Microsoft campaign shows that poisoned results can lead to disguised utilities. If the download does not match what you meant to install, stop and verify it through the publisher’s official channel. Retain the protections that scan downloads and running programs rather than relying on caution alone.

Which product is the best at detecting cryptocurrency miners?

There is no substantiated product ranking in Microsoft’s and government guidance cited here. Those sources do not provide current, independent detection-test scores, so choose by verifying the product’s detection approach and protections, then checking compatibility and the features you need.

On Windows 10 or 11, Microsoft Defender is a reasonable starting point for many people because it includes the relevant layers and scan options. For any commercial alternative, evaluate the exact edition rather than relying on a brand name or a claim that it detects miners. Compare its real-time and network coverage, update options, scan and recovery choices, management features, platform support, performance and total license cost. If you cannot confirm a feature or a current price, check the product documentation or listing before purchasing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a browser tab mine cryptocurrency without installing a program?

A browser can be involved in unwanted activity, but the ACSC guidance and Microsoft’s 2026 campaign cited here focus on cryptomining malware and disguised downloads; they do not establish how to identify every form of browser-based mining. Treat unexplained resource use as a reason to investigate the browser and device with trusted security tools, not as proof of a particular infection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can cryptocurrency mining damage my computer?

The documented concerns are increased processing use, heat, power costs, slowdowns and operational disruption, as described by the ACSC. Those concerns do not establish a specific hardware-damage threshold or lifespan impact, so avoid treating ordinary warmth or fan noise as evidence of permanent damage.

Should I disconnect an infected computer from the internet?

The cited ACSC, Microsoft and NCSC guidance does not prescribe network disconnection as a universal response to a suspected miner. If a device is managed by an employer, follow its incident-response instructions; otherwise, use trusted security software and support if the threat persists or you cannot safely investigate.

Does antivirus stop a miner from using my electricity?

Antivirus can detect or block threats, but no product can guarantee that a device will never be infected or use extra power. Sustained unexplained power use is a reason to inspect the device and run an appropriate scan, while remembering legitimate workloads can also draw more power.

Is Microsoft Defender enough to detect a miner on Windows?

For many Windows 10 and 11 users, Defender is a credible baseline with real-time, cloud and behavior-based protection plus full and offline scan options. No cited source guarantees that it will detect every miner or supplies a current comparative test ranking. Consider a paid product only if its specific extra controls, support or management meet a need you have.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I run two antivirus programs at the same time?

No. The NCSC advises against running more than one real-time antivirus product on a device because the added security benefit is minimal and products may conflict or affect stability. If changing products, follow the vendors’ instructions so only one real-time antivirus is active.

What is the difference between a full scan and Microsoft Defender Offline?

A full scan is the appropriate choice when you suspect an infection. Defender Offline restarts Windows into the Windows Recovery Environment and scans outside the normal Windows session, which can help if you are concerned that malware may persist or hide during a regular session.

Does Norton have a proven top rating for cryptocurrency-miner detection?

The NCSC names Norton as an example of a commercial antivirus product, but its guidance does not establish a current independent detection ranking or price. Compare the exact Norton edition, platform support, included devices, features, seller and license terms with your other options.

The Bottom Line

Choose protection that combines real-time, cloud and behavior-based detection with automatic updates, network protection and full-scan options. Microsoft Defender provides a credible baseline on Windows 10 and 11; pay for an alternative only when its specific features, support or management justify the cost. Do not run two real-time antivirus products together, and treat unexplained resource use as a reason to investigate—not proof of cryptojacking.
