For most people using Windows 11, start with Microsoft Defender Antivirus and Windows’ built-in protections turned on and updated. Pay for another antivirus suite only if you can name a specific need it meets—such as managing protection across several devices or using an additional feature—and verify that the plan actually includes it. Compare recent independent protection, performance, and usability results together, and keep only one real-time antivirus engine active.
Do I need to buy antivirus software for a Windows PC?
Not automatically. Microsoft says Defender Antivirus is included with Windows 10 and Windows 11, and that for many Windows 11 users it covers everyday risk without additional software. Microsoft’s Windows guidance is dated April 9, 2026, describes U.S. guidance, and notes that feature availability can vary by region. That does not mean every user has identical needs or that any antivirus makes a PC invulnerable. It means a Windows owner should first check the protection already present, then decide whether a paid product offers a concrete benefit worth its cost, added background activity, and ongoing maintenance. A suite is an optional choice, not a prerequisite for every Windows PC.
Microsoft Support says Defender automatically turns on when no other security product is installed and working. Before buying or installing another product, check Windows Security and confirm which antivirus provider is active; do not assume that paying for a suite is necessary just because a computer runs Windows.

What should I check in Windows Security first?
Confirm that Windows’ built-in protection is active and that updates are not being ignored. Windows security is broader than a single virus scanner: Microsoft describes a protection stack that includes antivirus, protections for web and downloads, and features that help guard security settings and files.
Check the active antivirus provider
Open the Windows Security app and look under Virus & threat protection for the active provider and protection status. If a third-party security product is already installed and working, it may be managing real-time antivirus instead of Defender. Avoid installing another real-time scanner until you know what is active.
Keep the surrounding protections in view
Microsoft’s Windows 11 security documentation describes several components that work alongside antivirus. Microsoft Defender SmartScreen helps protect against phishing, malicious sites and applications, and potentially malicious downloads. Tamper protection helps prevent malware from disabling real-time protection and related security settings. The broader stack also includes network protection, attack surface reduction rules, Controlled folder access, and Exploit Protection. Microsoft Learn explains Windows 11 virus and threat protection.
These protections have different roles; a product’s “antivirus” label alone does not tell you which web, network, file, or other safeguards are included. If you are considering a suite for an extra capability, identify the capability first and check that the particular edition you intend to buy includes it.
How should I compare antivirus products?
Compare protection, performance, and usability as separate questions. A high protection result does not by itself show how much a product affects a PC or how it handles legitimate files and everyday prompts.

| What to compare | What to look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Protection | Recent independent results, including the test date, Windows version, and the kinds of threats assessed. | A score is meaningful only in the context of the test conditions; it is not a guarantee about future threats or your particular PC. |
| Performance | The test’s separate system-impact result, not just the protection score. | Real-time scanning and background activity can affect how a PC feels to use. |
| Usability | Usability results and how manageable the product’s prompts and controls appear for your needs. | False alarms or confusing controls can interrupt normal work or make protection harder to manage. |
| Feature fit | A specific feature you will use, such as multi-device management, family controls, or identity-related services; verify it is in the exact plan. | Feature names and availability can differ between editions and regions. |
| Compatibility | The exact Windows version and device compatibility stated for the product and plan. | A product or feature may not support every device or Windows configuration. |
| Cost and terms | Current price, renewal price, license duration, device limit, cancellation terms, and included support on the seller’s current page. | Initial offers and renewal arrangements can differ; compare the terms that will actually apply to you. |
Do not convert one test into a permanent league table. Products change, test versions and dates matter, and a test cannot establish how a product will perform in every real-world situation. The available evidence here does not establish current retail prices, renewal rates, plan details, or device limits; check the current seller page before purchasing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat do the latest AV-TEST Windows results tell me?
AV-TEST’s July–August 2026 Windows home-user assessment evaluated 15 products using their default settings, current publicly available versions, and real-world threat scenarios. It assigned up to six points in each of three categories—protection, performance, and usability—for a maximum of 18 points. A score of 17.5 or higher qualified for AV-TEST’s “TOP PRODUCT” award. See AV-TEST’s August 2026 Windows 11 home-user test.
The scorecard treats the three categories separately, which is useful when comparing products: consider all three results rather than using protection alone as your decision rule. Several tested products received 6/6/6, but that is a result from this dated lab assessment, not proof of identical behavior on every PC or a prediction that the scores will persist in later tests.
Microsoft Defender Antivirus Consumer 4.18 is listed in that test with scores of 6 for protection, 5.5 for performance, and 6 for usability. Its product-specific report identifies Windows 11 Professional, English, 64-bit, and a July–August 2026 test period. Those details qualify the result: it is a lab score for the stated product and test setup, not a promise for every Windows edition, configuration, or future threat. View AV-TEST’s Microsoft Defender report.
Use this scorecard as one input when you have a reason to consider another product. Check the latest available results for the exact product and operating system, then weigh them against features, compatibility, usability, and the plan’s terms. A result from August 2026 should not be presented as timeless or as a complete product review.

When does a third-party antivirus suite make sense?
Consider another suite when a particular need is not met by the setup you already have and the plan you are considering demonstrably addresses it. Microsoft identifies multi-device management, family needs, and additional features as reasons some users may want to consider more than the built-in baseline.
You manage several devices
A suite may be convenient if you want to manage protection for several devices from one account or interface. Verify the device count, supported platforms, and whether the plan covers each device you intend to protect. A Windows PC being covered does not establish that a phone, tablet, or another computer is included.
You need family-oriented controls
Family features can be a reason to compare plans, but do not rely on a broad label such as “family protection.” Check the current edition’s feature list and supported devices, and make sure the controls match what you need to manage.
You want a particular additional feature
Some suites bundle features beyond antivirus. Decide which one matters to you, then verify its presence, scope, regional availability, and supported devices in the exact plan. Avoid paying for a bundle based only on a long feature list if the extras do not solve a real problem for you.

How do I choose and install one safely?
Use a short decision process: establish your current protection, define the missing need, check independent evidence and terms, and avoid overlapping real-time products.
- Check your baseline. Open Windows Security and review Virus & threat protection to see which provider is active. Confirm that protection and Windows updates are enabled.
- Write down the reason for changing. Name the feature or need that the current setup does not address. If you cannot identify one, there may be no reason to add a paid suite.
- Shortlist compatible options. Check the vendor’s current documentation for your exact Windows version, device types, plan features, and device limits.
- Review recent independent results. Compare protection, performance, and usability for the appropriate Windows test. Note the test date and conditions, and do not treat a score as a guarantee.
- Read the seller’s current terms. Check the price and renewal price, term length, cancellation rules, included support, and number of covered devices before paying. These details can change and are not established by the AV-TEST scores.
- Use a trusted download source. Microsoft recommends getting software from trusted sources. Download from the vendor or another source you trust, and avoid unsolicited download prompts.
- Install one real-time antivirus product. Follow the installer’s instructions and check Windows Security afterward to confirm which provider is active. Microsoft says Defender automatically turns on if no other security product is installed and working; do not try to keep two real-time engines active.
- Leave updates enabled. Keep Windows and the antivirus product current so you receive available security updates. Review alerts through the product or Windows Security rather than dismissing them without checking what they mean.
Why shouldn’t I run two real-time antivirus products?
Microsoft recommends against running other antivirus or antispyware products at the same time as Windows Defender. Multiple real-time products can affect performance and may cause installation or update errors. Microsoft Support’s antivirus and antimalware FAQ explains this guidance.
The practical goal is one active real-time antivirus engine, not an accumulation of overlapping scanners. If you install a new suite, let its installer and Windows’ security status show which provider is managing real-time protection. If installation or updates fail after adding another security product, check whether another real-time product is still active and follow the vendor’s removal or conflict-resolution instructions. Do not respond by disabling protections without understanding which product will replace them.

What common mistakes leave a Windows PC less protected?
- Assuming a paid product is automatically necessary. Check the included Windows baseline before paying; choose an extra suite for an identifiable need.
- Choosing only by a protection score. Compare performance and usability as well, and note the test date and configuration.
- Installing more than one real-time engine. Overlap can create performance, installation, and update problems rather than a useful second layer.
- Downloading from an untrusted prompt or site. Microsoft recommends trusted software sources; be cautious with unexpected download offers.
- Adding broad exclusions for convenience. Microsoft warns that exclusions should be used only when needed because broad exclusions can create scanning blind spots. If an application is being blocked, investigate the alert and use the narrowest exclusion appropriate to the issue rather than excluding broad folders or file types.
- Ignoring updates. Keep Windows and your chosen antivirus current. An old test result or an out-of-date product does not establish current protection.
- Buying based on a feature name alone. Confirm that the exact plan includes the feature, works with your devices, and is available in your region.
- Overlooking renewal terms. Review recurring price and cancellation conditions on the current seller page before purchase, not just the displayed introductory offer.
Microsoft’s guidance on unwanted software also recommends antivirus, regular updates, trusted software sources, and modern browser protections. Read Microsoft’s advice on protecting a PC from unwanted software.
What is a practical decision for common Windows users?
| Your situation | A sensible next step |
|---|---|
| You use one Windows 11 PC and have no unmet feature need. | Start with Defender and Windows’ built-in protections enabled and current; there is no automatic need to buy a second suite. |
| You need one interface for multiple devices. | Compare plans that explicitly cover your device mix and management needs; confirm the device limit and terms. |
| You need family controls or a specific extra service. | Verify that the exact current plan includes the relevant feature for your region and devices before buying. |
| You already have a working third-party antivirus. | Check Windows Security to see the active provider; do not add another real-time engine on top of it. |
| You are choosing between products based on test results. | Use current, appropriately scoped independent results and compare protection, performance, and usability together. |
The right choice is the smallest setup that meets your actual needs while remaining current, compatible, and manageable. For many Windows 11 users that is the built-in baseline; for others, a third-party suite can be justified by a specific feature or management requirement.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does installing a third-party antivirus automatically remove Microsoft Defender?
Microsoft says Defender automatically turns on when no other security product is installed and working. After a change, check Windows Security to see which provider is active rather than assuming how a particular installer configured the PC.
Does an AV-TEST score mean a product will stop every virus?
No. The July–August 2026 score reflects AV-TEST’s stated assessment conditions and period; it is not a guarantee against every threat or a forecast of future results. Use it as one comparison input alongside compatibility, usability, and plan fit.
Can I use antivirus with a VPN or browser protection?
The available Windows guidance supports using modern browser protections alongside antivirus, but it does not establish the behavior or compatibility of every specific VPN, browser extension, or security bundle. Check the software makers’ current compatibility information before combining products.
Are Windows 10 and Windows 11 covered by Microsoft Defender Antivirus?
Microsoft says Defender Antivirus is included in both Windows 10 and Windows 11. The AV-TEST result described here is specifically for Microsoft Defender Antivirus Consumer 4.18 on Windows 11 Professional, so it should not be treated as a test result for every Windows version.
