Choose an LLM observability platform by matching it to the way your team builds, evaluates, governs, and operates its production application—not by picking the longest feature list. It should reconstruct a request across model calls, retrieval, tools, and context assembly, while making latency, token use, cost, quality, and safety visible. Then compare evaluation workflows, data controls, integration effort, and the vendor’s actual billing meter at your expected volume. There is no universal winner: the right fit depends on your framework, existing operations stack, data policy, and quality process.

What should a production LLM observability platform show?

A useful platform lets an engineer move from a user-visible result to the sequence of events that produced it. That sequence can include context assembly, retrieval, one or more model calls, tool use, retries, and the final response. A log of the final prompt and answer alone will not explain where a slow, costly, incorrect, or unsafe result originated.

For each representative request, look for a trace that preserves parent-child relationships between operations. A model call nested inside a tool-driven agent run should remain distinguishable from the retrieval step that supplied its context. The trace should also expose timestamps and relevant metadata, so the team can reason about order, duration, and the inputs associated with an output.

  • Latency: Identify the overall request duration and the time spent in individual model, retrieval, and tool operations.
  • Token use and cost: See usage and cost at the call level as well as across a request, so an expensive workflow is not obscured by a single aggregate number.
  • Quality: Connect traces to evaluation scores, examples, and review outcomes rather than treating a successful API call as proof of a good answer.
  • Safety: Make it possible to inspect outcomes against the team’s safety criteria, with enough context to investigate the underlying behavior.
  • Operational context: Preserve the metadata and relationships needed to understand a request’s path through the application.

These are connected needs. For example, a quality regression is harder to diagnose if the trace does not show which context was retrieved or which model call produced the answer. Conversely, a complete trace without a way to evaluate outcomes leaves the team with evidence to inspect but no repeatable quality workflow.

How should you compare LLM observability platforms?

Compare how each candidate supports the operating process you intend to run. A feature name is not enough: verify the depth of the trace, how evaluation and human review fit into daily work, and what happens to prompts and customer data under the hosting option you choose.

Comparison area What to verify Why it matters in production
Trace depth Nested model, tool, and retrieval spans; request relationships; relevant metadata Lets the team find which stage contributed to an outcome instead of guessing from a final answer.
Evaluation Offline datasets and experiments, online evaluation, scoring, and regression handling Quality needs a repeatable test-and-monitor process, not just trace inspection.
Human review Annotation, review queues, and a way to use review outcomes in quality work People can examine examples that automated scores do not adequately explain.
Prompt and dataset management Versioning and the ability to connect prompt or dataset changes to evaluations Teams need to understand what changed when behavior changes.
Instrumentation Framework integrations, OpenTelemetry support, and compatible GenAI semantic conventions Integration affects implementation effort and how readily telemetry can fit with other systems.
Data governance Self-hosting, regional or hybrid options, retention, access controls, and support for enterprise operations Traces may contain prompts, retrieved documents, tool inputs, and customer data.
Commercial model Seats, traces, units, processed data, scores, or LLM spans; included volumes and overages A headline subscription price may not predict the cost of the team’s workload.

OpenTelemetry-compatible instrumentation can improve portability and integration with existing telemetry. It does not, by itself, guarantee that every backend uses the same semantic conventions or exposes equivalent evaluation and review features. Test the details that matter to your application rather than treating compatibility as a substitute for a product fit assessment.

Which platform fits each production-team operating model?

The leading candidates emphasize different workflows. Start with the tools and habits your team already depends on, then verify the capabilities that are essential to your production process.

Platform Best-fit profile Strength emphasized in the available comparisons Question to resolve in a proof of concept
LangSmith Teams invested in LangChain or LangGraph, as well as teams seeking agent observability connected to development workflows Framework-agnostic agent observability, evaluations, monitoring, annotation and review workflows, and automatic failure categorization Does its integration and review process match how your application is built and how your team will handle failures?
Braintrust Teams that organize quality around datasets, experiments, scores, and evaluation runs Evaluation-first workflows, including CI/CD quality gates Can your team express its important quality criteria as datasets and repeatable evaluation runs?
Datadog Agent Observability Organizations already operating Datadog and wanting AI telemetry within that operational environment APM-native telemetry that can be correlated with infrastructure, logs, security, and cost Does the available LLM trace connect the signals your on-call and application teams actually use?
Langfuse Teams that value open-source or self-hosted options and want traces, prompts, datasets, and evaluations Self-hostable observability and evaluation components, with an emphasis on data control and vendor independence Can your team operate the chosen deployment and meet its own retention and access-control requirements?
Arize Phoenix OpenTelemetry-first teams looking for self-hosted tracing and evaluation, with a commercial path available OpenTelemetry-native, self-hostable tracing and evaluation workbench; Arize AX is the commercial path Do its instrumentation and evaluation capabilities cover the application’s required trace and review workflows?
Helicone and Portkey Teams considering a gateway-oriented approach to API-level visibility and request operations Gateway-oriented visibility, routing, fallbacks, caching, and request logs Does adding a gateway give you the application-level trace depth you need across retrieval, tools, and context assembly?

When is framework alignment decisive?

If the production application is deeply invested in LangChain or LangGraph, LangSmith is a natural candidate to test because its observability is positioned alongside agent development, evaluation, monitoring, and review. Still, framework alignment should not replace a trace test: follow an actual request through the model, retrieval, and tool steps your application uses.

When should an evaluation workflow lead the decision?

If quality work starts with datasets and experiments, Braintrust is built around that evaluation-first shape. If your team instead needs an integrated set of traces, prompts, datasets, and evaluations that it can self-host, Langfuse is a candidate. For an OpenTelemetry-first self-hosted evaluation workbench, assess Phoenix. In each case, make your own quality examples part of the test rather than judging the platform by a generic demo.

When does existing operational infrastructure matter most?

Datadog Agent Observability merits consideration when the team already relies on Datadog and wants LLM telemetry connected to its APM, logs, infrastructure, security, and cost views. That is an operating-stack fit, not proof that it will suit every team. Confirm how its LLM spans relate to the views and investigation paths your operators use.

What does a gateway-oriented option reveal—and what might it miss?

Helicone and Portkey focus on API-level visibility and gateway functions such as routing, fallbacks, caching, and request logs. That can be relevant when the team wants those controls at the API boundary. However, gateway placement should be validated against the need to trace application work outside that boundary, including retrieval, tools, and context assembly.

How should you think about observability pricing?

Do not compare these tools by monthly price alone. Published examples use different meters, and one platform may bill by seat while another bills by processed data, scores, units, or spans. Prices and included volumes below are examples from comparisons published in 2026, not procurement quotes; they may change, and the figures are not directly comparable.

Platform and plan or meter Published example Source and qualification
LangSmith Plus $39 per seat per month LangChain, 2026 comparison; confirm current plan terms and included volume.
Braintrust Pro $249 per month LangChain, 2026 comparison; confirm current plan terms and included volume.
Langfuse Core, Pro, Enterprise $29, $199, and $2,499 per month, respectively LangChain, 2026 comparison; confirm current plan terms and included volume.
Datadog Agent Observability Starting price of $160 per month for the first 100,000 LLM spans LangChain, 2026 comparison; the quoted starting price is tied to the stated span allowance.
Arize AX Pro $50 per month LangChain, 2026 comparison; confirm current plan terms and included volume.
Helicone Pro $79 per month LangChain, 2026 comparison; confirm current plan terms and included volume.
Portkey Production $49 per month LangChain, 2026 comparison; confirm current plan terms and included volume.
Langfuse usage meter $6.00–$8.00 per 100,000 units Separate byte-ish, 2026 comparison; unit definition and plan applicability need confirmation.
Braintrust usage meter $3 per GB plus $1.50 per 1,000 scores Separate byte-ish, 2026 comparison; processed-data and score volumes affect the estimate.
Datadog usage meter Approximately $8 per 10,000 spans Separate byte-ish, 2026 comparison; confirm how the meter applies to your expected spans.

These examples show why apparently simple comparisons can mislead. A per-seat amount and a span-based amount answer different questions; a usage meter tied to processed data or scores adds still another variable. Even figures for the same platform may come from separate comparisons and use different assumptions, so do not treat them as one universal rate card.

What should a production cost estimate include?

Estimate the workload your team will actually send through the platform, including the evaluation process as well as user-facing traffic. Before committing to a budget, ask each vendor to map its meter to your expected volume and spell out the assumptions behind the estimate.

  • Retention, replay, and overage charges, plus any included-volume limits.
  • Plan-specific access, support, and enterprise operations that affect the deployment you intend to use.

Ask for current pricing and retention terms directly before procurement. The published examples above are volatile and should not be used as a quote or assumed to include evaluation tokens, longer retention, or every production capability.

How do hosting and data controls change the shortlist?

Hosting is a data-governance decision, not just an infrastructure preference. A trace can contain prompts, retrieved documents, tool inputs, and customer data; decide what is permitted to leave your environment before sending production traffic to an observability service.

  1. Classify the data in a trace. Map the prompt, retrieved context, tool inputs, outputs, and metadata that a representative request can produce.
  2. Set the allowed boundary. Determine whether those data may be processed by a hosted service, must remain in a particular environment or region, or require a self-hosted or hybrid approach.
  3. Check the actual deployment controls. Confirm retention, access controls, data residency options, and enterprise operations for the plan and deployment you would use; do not infer them from a broad product label.
  4. Test the chosen boundary. Instrument a realistic request and inspect what reaches the trace, then verify that the resulting handling matches the team’s policy.

Langfuse and Phoenix are candidates when self-hosting is important; the available data also describes both as offering self-hostable tracing and evaluation capabilities. That does not remove the need to assess who operates the deployment, how access is controlled, or how long its traces are retained. For hosted or commercial offerings, verify the specific regional and hybrid options available to your organization rather than assuming them.

Do you need OpenTelemetry for LLM tracing?

You do not need to make OpenTelemetry a universal prerequisite, but OpenTelemetry-compatible instrumentation can help connect LLM telemetry with existing systems and keep instrumentation more portable. Whether that benefit is decisive depends on the team’s current stack and on whether the backend implements the conventions and trace details the application needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Validate the full path from instrumentation to investigation. Confirm that nested model, tool, and retrieval work is represented meaningfully, that relevant metadata arrives, and that the traces remain useful in the chosen backend. Then check whether evaluations, human review, and other product workflows require additional integrations beyond the telemetry standard.

Phoenix is described as OpenTelemetry-native and self-hostable. Other candidates may support OpenTelemetry or compatible GenAI semantic conventions, but compatibility and feature depth vary by backend. Avoid treating a shared protocol as evidence that traces, evaluation features, or operational workflows will be interchangeable.

How should you run a proof of concept?

Use the same framework, model providers, retrieval system, and access-control model intended for production. A time-boxed proof of concept should answer whether the platform can trace the real application, support the team’s quality process, fit its data policy, and produce a credible cost estimate.

  1. Map a representative request. Include retrieval, context assembly, tools, model calls, retries, and the output shown to the user. Record which parts must be visible to troubleshoot failures.
  2. Instrument that path. Check whether the platform preserves the causal relationships between operations, not merely a sequence of disconnected events.
  3. Inspect trace usefulness. Verify that latency, token use, cost, and relevant metadata can be found at the level needed to investigate a slow, expensive, or poor-quality result.
  4. Bring real quality examples. Use team-defined datasets or representative cases to try offline evaluations, online scoring, human review, and regression handling. Check how a reviewed example becomes useful to later evaluation work.
  5. Test portability and integrations. Validate OpenTelemetry or compatible instrumentation where needed, plus the framework and operational integrations required by the production team.
  6. Validate governance. Inspect the trace contents and check the deployment, retention, access controls, and data handling against the team’s policy.
  7. Model the real bill. Give the vendor expected spans, seats, data, scores, evaluator calls, retention, and replay assumptions as applicable. Ask how overages and included volumes affect the estimate.
  8. Write down acceptance criteria. Agree on required trace coverage, quality workflows, governance conditions, and budget assumptions before comparing results across candidates.

Use the proof of concept to test capability in your own environment, not to assume one product’s published positioning proves performance for your application. A useful outcome is a documented fit—or a concrete reason to remove a candidate—against requirements that the team has already agreed on.

What are the most common selection mistakes?

  • Choosing from feature names. A product may list tracing or evaluation without showing whether it captures the nested operations and review workflow your application needs. Test those paths directly.
  • Stopping at request logs. API-level visibility can be helpful, but it may not reconstruct work performed elsewhere in the application. Check coverage from context assembly through the user-visible result.
  • Confusing traces with quality assurance. Traces help explain individual outcomes; production quality also calls for datasets, experiments, online evaluation, human review, and regression handling.
  • Assuming an open standard means feature parity. Instrumentation compatibility helps portability, but semantic conventions and backend feature depth still need validation.
  • Sending data before setting a policy. Prompts and retrieved content can carry sensitive information. Establish allowed handling and inspect what is captured before instrumenting production traffic.
  • Comparing headline prices as if the meters match. Seats, spans, units, processed data, and scores are different billing bases. Normalize the expected workload and include evaluation and retention costs.
  • Testing a demo instead of your system. A candidate may appear suitable until it meets your framework, providers, retrieval setup, access controls, and real quality examples. Keep those constant in the proof of concept.

Which platform should your team choose?

Shortlist by operating model, then let a representative proof of concept settle questions that product descriptions cannot. LangSmith is a natural candidate for LangChain or LangGraph teams seeking integrated agent development and observability; Braintrust for an evaluation-first process; Datadog Agent Observability for teams already operating Datadog; Langfuse for teams prioritizing open-source or self-hosted traces and evaluation; and Phoenix for OpenTelemetry-first self-hosted tracing and evaluation. Consider Helicone or Portkey when gateway-level visibility and controls match the problem, but verify application-level trace coverage.

Keep only candidates that meet the team’s minimum trace depth and data-governance requirements. Among those, compare how evaluation, review, integrations, and operating costs fit the process your team will actually maintain. LangChain’s August 16, 2026 article, 9 Best LLM Observability Tools for Production AI Agents, puts the central decision plainly: “The right choice depends on the team’s operating model.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use two LLM observability platforms at once?

It can be reasonable to keep an existing telemetry system while evaluating a specialized workflow, but first decide which system owns each trace and evaluation record. Otherwise, engineers may have to reconcile duplicate or differently structured views during an incident.

Should I capture every prompt and model response?

Not automatically. Decide what trace content is permitted under your data policy, then determine whether the team can troubleshoot effectively with that approved level of detail.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should an LLM observability platform be introduced?

Introduce tracing early enough to see representative application behavior before a production incident forces the choice. The key is to validate it against the deployed request path and the team’s real review process, rather than selecting it solely from a development demo.

What should I do if my team’s framework changes later?

Favor instrumentation and trace structures that can be tested independently of one framework, and document which framework-specific features the team relies on. Re-run the same representative request and evaluation cases after a framework migration to expose lost coverage.
