Choose an email security gateway by proving that it can detect impersonation and business-email compromise (BEC), malicious links and attachments, and spoofed messages without disrupting legitimate mail. Test those controls against your organization’s actual workflows, and verify SPF, DKIM, DMARC, TLS, encryption, and mail-flow interoperability before comparing investigation tools, administration, privacy, and total cost. AI-related claims are not a substitute for that evidence: no independent cross-vendor accuracy figure establishes which gateway catches AI-generated attacks best.
What does an email security gateway do, and why do AI-generated attacks change the choice?
An email security gateway is an organizational control layer that inspects mail, applies policy, and filters threats as messages move through an email environment. It can reduce the chance that spoofing, malicious links, dangerous attachments, or deceptive requests reach people, but it is only one layer of an identity and endpoint security program.

AI makes it faster to produce convincing impersonation, social-engineering language, multilingual lures, and many variations of the same message. That raises the value of controls that examine context—not just known-bad senders, domains, file hashes, or message signatures. A gateway should help identify whether a sender resembles a trusted contact, whether a domain looks like a supplier’s, whether a request is unusual for the sender-recipient relationship, and whether the message is pressing the recipient to take a risky action.
The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security’s Email security best practices (ITSM.60.002), effective August 12, 2025, recommends protective measures including encryption, authentication, and secure gateways, alongside employee awareness. NIST SP 800-177 Rev. 1 (2019) describes SPF, DKIM, DMARC, TLS, S/MIME, and certificate and key distribution as technologies that support trustworthy email. These fundamentals remain important regardless of how a phishing message was written.

A gateway cannot, by itself, prevent an attacker from using a valid account after stealing its credentials or taking over a session. CISA’s April 11, 2024 Emergency Directive 24-02, issued after a compromise of Microsoft corporate email, encouraged strong passwords, multifactor authentication, and not sharing unprotected sensitive information over insecure channels. CISA also recommends measures such as phishing-resistant MFA, email filtering, external-email flags, and attachment filtering. Treat the gateway as a risk-reduction control, not a replacement for identity security, endpoint protection, or user reporting.
What should an AI-ready gateway detect?
Require context-aware impersonation and BEC detection, plus effective URL, QR-code, malware, and attachment inspection. The gateway should give administrators enough evidence to understand a decision and correct mistakes—not merely label a product feature as “AI-powered.”
Impersonation and business-email compromise
Ask how the system evaluates display names, look-alike domains, newly registered domains, sender-recipient relationships, and unusual changes in communication patterns. Include supplier impersonation, internal-account compromise, urgent payment requests, requests to change bank details, and attempts to move a conversation to another channel. Test multilingual and AI-generated wording, but also plain, short messages that rely on a plausible request rather than obvious spelling or grammar errors.
For each test, look for an actionable explanation: what signal triggered a warning or block, whether the message was quarantined or delivered, and what an administrator or recipient can do next. A useful control should distinguish a risky message from ordinary correspondence closely enough to limit both missed attacks and disruptive false positives.
Links, QR codes, and attachments
For links, check reputation screening, redirect-chain analysis, protection against credential-phishing pages, and scanning at the time a user clicks—not only when a message first arrives. Ask how rewritten links behave when recipients use mobile clients, forward messages, or open mail outside the organization’s usual environment. If staff receive QR codes in messages, verify whether the gateway can inspect them and how it handles a code that leads to a changing destination.

For attachments, assess static analysis and sandboxing, including how the service handles archives, password-protected files, and common dangerous file types. Confirm whether it can safely render or convert content, how analysts can override a verdict, and how users receive or request access to a file that was blocked. CISA recommends gateway filtering for malicious indicators and common dangerous attachment types; the particular depth and workflow of a product still need to be tested.
Warnings, reporting, and remediation
Check what users actually see when a message is suspicious: for example, whether an external sender is clearly identified, whether the warning explains a specific concern, and whether a user can report a message without leaving the mail client. Then inspect the administrator workflow: can the team search for related messages, remove a delivered message, record the reason for remediation, and connect the incident to its existing response process?
A 2024 Mimecast Email Security Cloud Gateway datasheet describes AI-assisted warning banners, impersonation and social-engineering detection, relationship analysis, malware sandboxing, URL scanning, QR-code protection, remediation, and SIEM/SOAR integrations. Those are vendor-described capabilities, not independent proof of detection accuracy. Verify any feature that matters to your organization in a controlled evaluation.
Which email-authentication and encryption requirements matter?
Authentication and transport protections are part of the gateway decision because filtering can change how messages are routed or evaluated. Verify SPF, DKIM, DMARC, TLS, and any S/MIME use that matters to your workflows, then test how intermediaries, forwarding, and encryption affect delivery and verdicts.
SPF, DKIM, and DMARC
These mechanisms address related but distinct questions. The UK National Cyber Security Centre explains that SPF lets a domain publish sending IP addresses it trusts, DKIM cryptographically signs outgoing mail to show it is from the domain, and DMARC sets a policy for receiving systems handling messages that fail SPF or DKIM checks. A gateway should make it possible to see the relevant authentication results and understand how they contribute to a decision.

TLS, S/MIME, and end-to-end encryption
NIST SP 800-177 Rev. 1 recommends TLS for protecting email in transit and identifies S/MIME for message-content encryption and authentication. Your gateway evaluation should establish which protections the organization requires and what happens when a recipient, sender, or intermediary cannot use them. Do not assume that encryption will work transparently just because a product supports a named standard.
RFC 9787, published by the IETF in August 2025, warns that flexible end-to-end email cryptography can create interoperability and usability failures. Test certificate expiry, certificate and key availability, forwarding, delivery to external recipients, and behavior when encryption cannot be applied. Ask how the product communicates a failure and whether its fallback could expose content or prevent a necessary message from arriving.
ARC and authentication preservation
Forwarding services and other intermediaries can affect authentication results. Microsoft’s documentation treats Authenticated Received Chain (ARC) configuration as an interoperability consideration when intermediaries alter or forward messages. Check whether the gateway seals and validates ARC as appropriate, how it connects to your mail environment, and whether it preserves original authentication results for downstream decisions.

A permissive exception can let messages bypass checks that would otherwise catch spoofing or malicious content. Require a documented reason, a narrow scope, an owner, and a review process for each exception.
How should you compare gateways?
Compare gateways against a shared evaluation plan, not a list of advertised features. If two or more products meet your functional baseline, use the same representative business workflows and adversarial cases for each and measure both protection and operational impact.

The available data does not establish comparable product prices, service-level figures, or independent cross-vendor performance results. Request current terms and test results for the editions and deployment models you are actually considering rather than inferring them from a feature sheet.
Build a representative test set
Use both routine mail and adversarial examples. Include legitimate messages that are easy to mistake for threats—such as mail from new suppliers or unfamiliar third-party services—so that the evaluation measures false positives as well as blocks. Add forwarded mail, mailing lists, encrypted messages, password-protected archives, mobile clients, and messages from external senders. Test scenarios should reflect your organization’s real languages, business processes, and exposure to payment or account-change requests.
Record missed detections, false positives, time to verdict, analyst effort, user friction, and recovery actions. Define what counts as a successful outcome before comparing products. One vendor may block more suspicious examples but also interrupt more legitimate business messages; the operational cost matters alongside the security result.
Do not accept a vendor accuracy percentage as a cross-product verdict unless the test set, denominator, methodology, deployment configuration, and date are comparable. The available evidence does not establish an authoritative independent cross-vendor benchmark for AI-driven email-gateway detection.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do you pilot and roll out a gateway safely?
Start with visibility and mail-flow mapping, then evaluate the gateway in a controlled mode before enforcing broad blocking policies. A measured rollout makes it easier to distinguish a real attack from a routing, authentication, or policy problem.
Best Value
- Inventory your environment. Document domains, accepted senders, forwarding services, mail-flow connectors, sensitive data, and regulatory constraints. Include third-party systems that send on your behalf and the routes used by hybrid or on-premises mail.
- Establish authentication visibility. Review SPF, DKIM, and DMARC results before enforcement. Identify legitimate senders, check alignment, and document the owner and rationale for exceptions.
- Pilot in monitoring or controlled-routing mode. Confirm how the gateway fits the existing mail path, including TLS behavior, ARC sealing and validation where relevant, and delivery through intermediaries. Check that the pilot gives administrators enough information to investigate decisions.
- Run a proof of concept. Test impersonation, BEC, malware, malicious URLs, QR codes, attachments, and encrypted-message scenarios against the representative workflows your team selected. Include legitimate mail that could trigger the same controls.
- Tune and define response workflows. Use measured false positives and remediation outcomes to adjust policy. Set out who reviews user reports, who can release or remove messages, how urgent incidents are escalated, and how decisions are recorded.
- Enforce gradually. Expand enforcement in stages so that delivery problems and unexpected authentication failures can be isolated. Watch detections, bypasses, false positives, authentication failures, and incident-response metrics.
- Keep complementary controls in place. Maintain phishing-resistant MFA, credential monitoring, endpoint hygiene, and user reporting. The gateway does not prevent account takeover by itself.
What should determine the final choice?
Select the gateway that meets your technical baseline and performs best against your organization’s test cases at an acceptable level of false positives and operating effort. Include mail-flow compatibility, user experience, investigation and recovery, privacy terms, migration complexity, and full cost in that decision.
Recommended Free Tools
- Reject unsupported certainty: a product’s AI label or vendor-reported accuracy figure is not a substitute for a comparable test.
- Prefer observable decisions: administrators should be able to investigate why a message was flagged and make a controlled correction.
- Protect mail flow as well as content: authentication, encryption, forwarding, and intermediaries can change what users receive and what downstream systems can verify.
- Plan for operations: user reporting, remediation, policy ownership, and exception review determine whether the gateway remains effective after deployment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a gateway stop an attacker who is already using a compromised mailbox?
Not reliably on its own: a message sent from a legitimate compromised account may pass checks intended to identify spoofing. Treat suspicious account activity as an identity incident and pair mail controls with account protection and response procedures.
Should a company reject every message that fails DMARC?
Not without first understanding its legitimate sending services and authentication alignment. A receiving policy is applied by the domain owner, and strict rejection can affect legitimate mail if authorized senders or forwarding paths have not been accounted for.
Does TLS mean an email’s contents are encrypted from the sender to the recipient?
Not necessarily. TLS protects a transmission hop, while end-to-end content protection such as S/MIME is a separate mechanism with its own certificate, key, and interoperability requirements.
Can one gateway configuration work unchanged for every department?
Often it should not: teams can have different external-sender patterns, sensitive-data rules, and tolerance for quarantine or delays. Keep the baseline consistent, but verify policy exceptions and workflows against the needs and owners of each group.
