Choose an app logging API by validating its record contract, schema semantics, trace correlation, transport security, full cost model, data transformations, and operational portability—not by comparing an ingestion price alone. A suitable API should emit typed records that downstream systems can query, carry trace and resource context, support a documented OTLP or equivalent protocol, and let you export or migrate your data. The seven checks below turn those requirements into a procurement test you can run against any managed logging service.
What should you compare when choosing an app logging API?
Start with a written pass/fail matrix. Require the provider to demonstrate each item with its SDK or endpoint documentation and, where possible, a trial account that receives deliberately difficult test records.

| Check | Pass condition | Failure risk |
|---|---|---|
| Record and SDK contract | LoggerProvider/Logger APIs and typed LogRecord fields for time, context, severity, body, attributes, event name and supported exceptions | Applications become tied to provider-specific wrappers or lose fields during export |
| Structured schema | Stable field names, data types and meanings that queries and validation rules can rely on | JSON appears structured but behaves like ungoverned text |
| Correlation | Trace ID, span ID and resource attributes survive ingestion | Investigators cannot connect a log line to a trace, service or deployment |
| Authentication and protocol | Documented token scopes, endpoint region, content type, compression and SDK/exporter support | Secure delivery fails or requires a custom, fragile transport |
| Economics and retention | Ingestion, storage, query scans, retention and overages are priced separately and clearly | A cheap ingest rate is offset by query throttling or short retention |
| Normalization and loss | Nulls, arrays, timestamps, names and large attributes have documented handling | Queries and schemas change silently at the collector or backend |
| Portability and operations | Collector/exporter options plus tested retries, limits, deletion, residency and incident access | Outages or lock-in prevent recovery and migration |
OpenTelemetry is a useful baseline because its Logs API defines a common logger surface and record model. It is stable except where the specification explicitly marks behavior otherwise, so you can compare vendors against a public contract rather than seven unrelated SDK designs.
Does the API expose a real logger and record contract?
Require a LoggerProvider and Logger surface, then inspect the resulting LogRecord. The record should carry a timestamp, execution context, severity, body, attributes, event name and exceptions where the implementation supports them.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Fields to verify
- Timestamp: confirm whether the application, collector or service supplies it and what precision is retained.
- Context: check that trace and span context can be attached without hand-copying IDs into message text.
- Severity: verify both the numeric level and the human-readable representation used in searches and alerts.
- Body and attributes: ensure the primary message remains distinct from typed key-value data.
- Event name: confirm that an event can be identified independently of its prose message.
- Exceptions: test stack traces, exception type and message when the SDK claims exception support.
Ask for an example in every language your services use. A provider may implement an OpenTelemetry-compatible exporter while omitting a field in one language binding. Record the SDK version and whether upgrades preserve field names and severity mappings.
How can you tell whether logs are genuinely structured?
A JSON payload alone is not structured logging. OpenTelemetry describes structured logs as having “a consistent schema or well-defined typed fields that downstream systems can reliably depend on.” Require stable names, types and semantics, not merely JSON syntax.

Test schema behavior with hostile data
- Send the same field as a number, string and Boolean in separate records and observe whether the backend rejects, coerces or forks the field.
- Send nested objects, null values and empty arrays, then query for each condition.
- Use names that differ only by case, punctuation or reserved characters.
- Verify whether event names and attribute keys are case-sensitive.
- Export the records and compare the exported types with what the query interface displayed.
Request the provider’s semantic-convention documentation and versioning policy. A schema that can be validated in code is safer than one inferred from dashboards after production data has accumulated. Treat undocumented coercion as a compatibility risk: a query written against a numeric field may stop matching when a later SDK serializes that field as text.
Will logs correlate with traces, metrics and deployments?
They should. OpenTelemetry identifies execution context and resource context as the main correlation dimensions, so require trace ID, span ID and resource attributes on every applicable record.
Execution context
Trace ID groups work across services; span ID identifies the operation that emitted a record. Test an incoming request that calls a second service and confirm that both services’ logs carry the same trace ID while their span IDs identify their own spans.

Resource context
Resource attributes describe the producing service and its environment. Check for service name, service version, deployment environment and instance or container identity. These attributes let an operator distinguish a failed deployment from an identical service running an older revision.
Correlation failure modes
- IDs are present in a text message but not indexed fields.
- A collector drops context when it batches records.
- One SDK uses a different attribute name or casing.
- Logs arrive before traces and the backend never reconciles late data.
Use a trace-driven acceptance test: create one request, locate its trace, open the related logs, and pivot to the service and deployment resource without manually copying identifiers.
What authentication and wire-protocol details matter?
Confirm the complete delivery contract before choosing an API: token scopes, endpoint geography, content type, compression, TLS requirements and supported SDK or exporter paths.
Example: an OTLP HTTP endpoint
Dynatrace documents an SaaS OTLP logs endpoint at POST /api/v2/otlp/v1/logs. Its example uses application/x-protobuf; API-token authentication requires the logs.ingest scope, with platform or OAuth scopes available in the documented alternatives. Treat these as provider-specific requirements, not universal OTLP defaults.
Questions for procurement and security
- Can tokens be restricted to log ingestion, rotated, revoked and audited?
- Which regional endpoint receives data, and can routing be pinned to a required geography?
- Does the service accept OTLP over HTTP, gRPC, or both?
- Which compression formats are accepted, and does the SDK negotiate them?
- What response codes and retry-after signals indicate throttling or authentication failure?
Have a staging workload send both valid and intentionally invalid requests. Capture status codes, response bodies and retry guidance so your runbook does not depend on guesswork during an incident.

How should you compare ingestion, query cost and retention?
Put ingestion, storage, query scans, retention and overage behavior in separate columns. A recurring ingest price does not tell you what an investigation costs or how long evidence remains available.
| Service rule | Documented value | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare included ingestion | 0.5 GB per day | Free allowance documented for 2026 |
| Cloudflare retention for that allowance | Seven days | Same 2026 documentation |
| Cloudflare unsampled security datasets | $1 per GB ingested with 30-day retention | Begins December 1, 2026 |
| Supabase Logs Ingest | Billed | Ingestion is the metered operation |
| Supabase Logs Query allowance | 100 GB scanned for every 1 GB ingested | Allowance stated in 2026 documentation |
| Supabase excess usage | Rate limiting and shorter retention may apply | Described as enforcement behavior, not a universal overage price |
| Supabase Logs Query charge | Not billed | Supabase states that Logs Query is not charged |
Model at least three workloads: normal daily operations, a deployment investigation that scans a broad time range, and a security incident requiring unsampled data. Record whether retention is measured from ingestion time, whether deleting data reduces charges, and whether query limits are per project, region or account.
What data transformations can change your schema?
Send awkward data deliberately. Telemetry’s API documentation describes table-name normalization, timestamp filling, and pruning of null values, empty objects and empty arrays. Similar transformations can change both the stored schema and the queries you need to write.
Build a normalization test
- Create fields with spaces, punctuation, mixed case and names that resemble reserved words.
- Send explicit timestamps, missing timestamps and timestamps in different precision formats.
- Include nulls, empty objects, empty arrays and unusually large attributes.
- Retrieve the records through the query API and export path.
- Compare field names, values, types and timestamps byte-for-byte with the source records.
Document every transformation in your own schema contract. If empty arrays are removed, “field absent” and “field present but empty” cannot be distinguished later. If timestamps are filled automatically, keep the original application timestamp in a separate attribute when event ordering matters.
How do portability and operational controls affect the decision?
Use an OpenTelemetry Collector or equivalent exporter path when backend choice matters. The Collector can parse, enrich and process telemetry before exporting it, giving you a controlled place to redact fields, add resource attributes and route data to more than one destination.

Operational tests to run before signing
- Batching: measure how records are grouped and how batch size affects latency and memory.
- Retries: inject endpoint failures and verify exponential backoff, retry limits and durable handoff.
- Back-pressure: observe what happens when the backend throttles; records should be queued, sampled according to policy or rejected visibly.
- Rate limits: obtain documented request, byte and concurrent-connection limits for your plan.
- Residency: confirm processing, backup and support-access regions, not only the hostname you call.
- Deletion: test tenant-wide and record-level deletion, including backup expiry and export copies.
- Incident access: verify who can query production logs, how access is audited and how emergency access is revoked.
OpenTelemetry documents the Collector’s parsing, enrichment, processing and exporter roles, but there is no universal cross-vendor limit matrix. Obtain each provider’s current limits, SLA and residency terms during procurement rather than assuming that OTLP compatibility makes operational behavior identical.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is a practical evaluation process for a SaaS team?
Run the same evidence-based test against every candidate and keep the resulting records with your architecture decision.
- Define mandatory fields, semantic conventions, retention periods, regions and deletion requirements.
- Implement one small service with the standard logger surface and emit normal, malformed and high-cardinality records.
- Trace a request across at least two services and verify trace, span and resource pivots.
- Send the workload through the provider’s supported SDK and through an OpenTelemetry Collector/exporter path.
- Capture authentication setup, endpoint protocol, compression, status codes and retry behavior.
- Run the normalization and loss tests, then diff source records against query and export results.
- Calculate ingestion, storage and investigation costs for normal, incident and retention-heavy scenarios.
- Write exit criteria: export format, migration time, deletion proof, regional routing and recovery behavior.
Select the API that passes the contract and operational tests with an acceptable total cost. If a vendor cannot document a field mapping, limit, retention rule or deletion path, record that uncertainty as a procurement risk instead of treating a low headline price as proof of value.
How do you keep the logging API choice maintainable?
Version your schema and semantic conventions alongside application code. Add contract tests to CI that emit representative records, validate required fields and fail when an SDK upgrade changes types, severity mapping or context propagation.
Keep provider-specific configuration at the exporter boundary. Applications should emit the common record model; endpoint URLs, token scopes, compression and routing belong in deployment configuration. This separation makes a backend change a pipeline task rather than a rewrite of every service.

Which seven checks should appear in your final decision record?
Your decision record should state the accepted SDK and record contract, schema rules, correlation fields, authentication and protocol, separated cost and retention assumptions, documented transformations, and portability controls. Attach the test payloads, query results, exporter configuration and answers from the provider so a future team can reproduce the choice.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
An app logging API is ready for production when its records remain typed and correlated, its transport is secured and observable, its economics are understood across ingestion and investigation, and your team can recover or migrate without losing essential context.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should application teams standardize on OpenTelemetry logs even when they use one backend?
A common record and exporter model keeps application code independent from a particular destination and makes a later migration less disruptive. It also gives platform engineers one place—the collector or exporter—to apply enrichment, redaction and routing policy.
How should we handle personally identifiable information in structured logs?
Define prohibited fields and redaction rules before instrumentation, then test them with payloads containing realistic sensitive values. Verify that redaction occurs before batching and that exports, backups and support-access paths do not reintroduce the original data.
What is a useful acceptance test for log delivery during an outage?
Temporarily block the logging endpoint, generate a known burst, restore connectivity and compare emitted, queued, delivered and dropped counts. The result should show the queue limit, retry duration and the operator signal produced when data cannot be delivered.
