The right AI visibility tool depends on what you need to measure: whether your brand appears in AI answers, whether those answers cite your pages, or how often competitors appear beside you. Those are different signals, and no single tool in the available evidence is a universal winner. Of six named candidates, current official feature details are established here only for Ahrefs Brand Radar and Semrush AI Visibility; Peec AI, Otterly.AI, Profound, and Scrunch are shortlist leads whose current coverage, limits, and prices need vendor-side confirmation. What does an AI visibility tool actually measure?
An AI visibility tracker samples answers from selected AI search or assistant platforms and records brand-related results. Depending on the product, it may report brand mentions, cited sources, sentiment, prompt-level answer text, or a share-of-voice score. These measurements are related, but they do not mean the same thing.

- Brand mention: Your company or product appears in an answer. The answer may not link to your site or identify a page as a source.
- Citation: The platform names or links a source it used. A cited page can be yours, a competitor’s, or a third party’s.
- Share of voice: A vendor-defined comparison of how frequently your brand appears against selected competitors in a sampled set of answers. Its meaning depends on the vendor’s prompts, engines, and calculation.
These tools measure sampled outputs, not every answer a person might receive. A recorded mention is evidence that the brand appeared under the tracker’s test conditions; it does not prove that a change to your site caused the appearance, improved rankings, or generated leads. Treat visibility scores as monitoring indicators, not as business outcomes or directly comparable grades across products.
Which tools can track brand mentions in AI answers?
Six names appear in the available category comparisons, but the evidence does not support ranking all six or presenting them as equally verified. Ahrefs and Semrush have official feature details in the sources cited here; the other four are candidates to investigate rather than confirmed recommendations.

How do Ahrefs and Semrush differ?
Both products can help assess brand presence in AI answers, but the published details emphasize different workflows. Ahrefs distinguishes research against an existing index from custom prompt tracking that accumulates history after setup; Semrush describes daily monitoring of selected prompts and plan-specific prompt counts.

The prices and plan limits are not a like-for-like comparison: one source lists index access and custom prompt packages, while the other gives prompt counts for named plans. Calculate the cost for the exact feature combination and monitoring volume you need rather than comparing a starting price with an add-on or an index subscription.
How should I choose between broad discovery and custom prompt tracking?
Start with the decision you want the data to support. A broad index can help explore where a brand appears across a large prompt set; custom tracking can show how a defined group of prompts changes over time. They answer different questions and may be separate features or charges.

Choose discovery when you need to find patterns
Broad prompt research is useful when you do not yet know which questions produce brand mentions, which competitors appear, or which sources AI answers cite. Ahrefs describes an existing index of more than 405 million search-backed prompts; that is Ahrefs’ vendor-reported product scale, not an independent measure of market adoption or a guarantee that every prompt relevant to your business is included.

Custom prompts are useful when you need to monitor specific buyer questions, comparison queries, or use cases consistently. They create a repeatable sample, but the results still depend on prompt wording, selected engines, location, language, and sampling schedule. Record those settings so you can tell a real change from a changed test.
Use both only if each answers a distinct question
Discovery can identify prompts worth monitoring; custom tracking can then follow those prompts on a schedule. Before paying for both, check whether index access and prompt runs are bundled, capped, or sold separately. For Ahrefs, the Help Center describes the immediate existing-index feature separately from custom prompt tracking and lists separate custom prompt packages.
How many prompts and markets should I monitor?
Size the project around the decisions you will make, not the largest quota a plan advertises. More prompts and markets increase the volume of sampled answers to review, and the prompt allowance alone does not tell you how much useful evidence the plan provides.
- Write down the decisions. Examples include whether product pages appear for category questions, which sources are cited for comparisons, or whether competitors are mentioned for a particular use case.
- Build a focused prompt set. Include the actual question types your audience asks, then group them by product, intent, or market. Avoid adding variations that will not change a decision.
- Select engines and markets deliberately. Match the monitored platforms, languages, and locations to the audience you serve. Do not assume a plan’s broad coverage means every engine-market combination is available at every cadence.
- Set the cadence to the decision cycle. Daily tracking is available as a Semrush-described feature for selected prompts, but daily checks are not automatically necessary. Use a schedule that produces timely information without creating more answer records than your team can inspect.
- Estimate review effort and total cost. Count prompts, engines, markets, and scheduled runs; then check which combination consumes plan limits or requires an add-on. A lower subscription price may not cover the monitoring volume you need.
For Semrush, the cited product page gives prompt counts of 25 for AI Visibility Toolkit, 50 for Semrush One Starter, and up to 200 for Advanced. These are vendor-stated plan limits, not a recommendation for how many prompts your organization needs. Confirm that the named plan, prompt count, and daily monitoring remain available on the date you buy.

What evidence should I inspect in a tracker?
A dashboard score is hard to act on unless you can inspect the observations behind it. Before committing, check the product documentation or trial account for the following:
- Answer text: Can you read the actual sampled answer, rather than only a score or count?
- Cited URLs and domains: Can you identify the exact sources AI answers used, and distinguish a brand mention from a citation?
- Competitor context: Can you see which competing brands appeared for the same prompt and engine?
- Sentiment and narrative detail: Does the product show the underlying language or only a classification? Sentiment labels can be difficult to interpret without the answer text.
- Exports and integrations: Can you export records or connect them to reporting workflows your team already uses? The cited product details do not establish equivalent export or API capabilities across the candidates.
- Methodology: Does the vendor explain how it selects prompts, samples answers, calculates share of voice, and handles location or language?
Semrush says its product tracks sentiment and narratives; Ahrefs describes identifying cited pages and domains. Those feature descriptions do not establish identical data access or metric definitions. Ask to see the answer-level record and methodology for the exact plan before treating two vendors’ scores as comparable.

Tracking can establish that a brand appeared, or a page was cited, in the answers captured under a tool’s stated conditions. Repeated measurements can help identify changes within a consistent setup. They do not establish why the change occurred or whether it improved revenue, conversions, or organic search performance.
Semrush’s product page includes a customer statement from Jordan Brannon, President of Coalition Technologies, describing its AI visibility score as one part of reporting. That is a customer testimonial about reporting use, not independent evidence that the product improves visibility or business results. Likewise, a vendor’s platform count, prompt-index size, or coverage claim describes the product, not category-wide effectiveness.

What should I verify before subscribing?
Run a small buying check against the use case and plan you actually intend to use. Product coverage and pricing can change, and the published details for the six candidates are not equally complete.
- Confirm the exact AI platforms and surfaces included in the plan, not just the vendor’s overall platform count.
- Check whether the tool uses an existing prompt index, your custom prompts, or both—and whether those functions are priced separately.
- Verify prompt limits, run cadence, location and language choices, and any caps on answer history.
- Inspect sample answer records, citations, competitor data, and sentiment evidence rather than relying on a headline visibility score.
- Ask whether exports, APIs, and reporting integrations are included in the selected plan.
- Confirm current price and renewal terms directly with the vendor. The Ahrefs figures cited above come from a Help Center article published September 3, 2026, and should not be treated as a guaranteed current quote.
On the evidence available, Ahrefs and Semrush are the two candidates with specific official feature descriptions to evaluate first. Peec AI, Otterly.AI, Profound, and Scrunch may merit a vendor-side check, but the cited comparison material is not enough to establish their current capabilities, prices, or suitability.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an AI mention mean my website was cited?
No. A system can name a company without linking to or identifying its website as a source. Check the answer record and cited URLs separately, and note whether the mention refers to the company, a product, or a third-party page.
Can AI visibility scores be compared between vendors?
Not reliably unless both vendors disclose sufficiently similar prompt sets, engines, sampling conditions, and scoring methods. Treat each score as a within-tool indicator unless you can verify that the underlying measurements match.
Will tracking mentions make an AI platform recommend my brand more often?
Monitoring by itself does not change AI answers. It can reveal answer patterns or cited sources that inform later work, but the available product descriptions do not establish that subscribing causes recommendations or citations to increase.
Should I track every AI platform at once?
Only if those platforms matter to the audience and decisions you are measuring. Start with the surfaces your customers use or your reporting requires, then expand when the extra observations justify the added review effort and cost.
