There is no universally best AI video upscaler. The right choice depends first on what is wrong with your source—noise, interlacing, compression, missing detail or simply insufficient resolution—then on the delivery format, your GPU and the workflow you want to maintain. Start by testing representative shots with a model suited to that footage. Compare temporal stability, halos, ringing, invented texture, render time, exported file size and any upload or download delay before committing to a full project. A dedicated application is usually the better fit for restoration and batch work; an editor-integrated tool is often more convenient when color, sound and cuts must remain in one timeline.
What does an AI video upscaler actually do?
An AI upscaler analyzes neighboring pixels and frames to produce a larger image, while attempting to reduce noise, compression damage or blur. It does not recover verified original detail that was never captured. The output is an estimate, so a larger frame can look cleaner and sharper while still containing invented texture.

- Spatial quality: Look for edge definition, ringing, halos and oversharpening.
- Temporal quality: Watch for flicker, crawling textures, doubled edges and details that appear or disappear between frames.
- Source fidelity: Check whether skin, eyes, hair, fabric and lettering remain believable rather than becoming smooth or plastic.
- Workflow impact: Include decode support, render time, storage, export settings and any round-tripping between applications.
How should I inspect footage before choosing a model?
Classify the source before opening a model menu. The same model can be excellent on clean progressive camera footage and poor on an interlaced archive or a heavily compressed web download.

Clean progressive camera or phone footage
If the image is well exposed, lightly compressed and already progressive, begin with the editor you use for the project. An integrated Super Scale or RTX-accelerated path can avoid exporting to another application and then relinking the result. A short comparison should still confirm that edges and motion remain stable.
Low-light, noisy or compressed footage
Choose a restoration-oriented model with explicit denoise and detail controls. Increasing sharpness before removing block noise can make compression more visible. Test how much noise reduction is needed to clean the image without erasing hair, fabric or small text.

Compare a face-oriented model with a neutral enhancement model. Inspect eyes, teeth, hairlines and skin pores at 100 percent and during motion. If a face model changes identity cues or creates repeated skin texture, reduce its strength or use the neutral model.
Interlaced or archival video
Identify whether the source is interlaced before selecting an enhancement model. Displaying interlaced fields as progressive frames produces combing on motion, and an upscaler cannot reliably repair a field-order mistake. Test deinterlacing and temporal handling on a moving shot, including horizontal pans and fine vertical lines.
Animation, line art and severely degraded archives
Use a model designed for that content and inspect line integrity frame by frame. Watch for halos around black outlines, broken thin lines, unstable textures and new details that were not present in the artwork. A model that is excellent for live-action skin may soften or distort animation.
How do I define the delivery target?
Set the destination before you choose the scale factor. A 1080p master, a 4K television file, an 8K archive, frame-rate conversion and HDR delivery impose different processing and export requirements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesResolution
Decide whether the project needs 1080p, 4K or 8K. Upscaling a small source all the way to 8K can magnify artifacts and multiply storage and render time. If the final platform is 1080p, a carefully restored 1080p file may look better than an aggressive 4K enlargement that is later reduced.
Frame rate
Upscaling and frame interpolation are separate operations. Select interpolation only when the delivery frame rate requires new frames, and judge motion for warping around hands, cables, rails and fast pans. Do not assume a model that enlarges frames will also create convincing intermediate frames.

Dynamic range and color
Record whether the source and destination are SDR or HDR and preserve the intended color space through the handoff. After export, check highlights, black levels and skin tones in the target application rather than trusting a single preview window.
Future grading or archival use
If more color work is planned, retain a high-quality intermediate and make delivery encodes separately. A small delivery file is convenient for playback but gives less latitude for another round of grading or restoration.
Which AI model fits each type of footage?
Model selection should follow the defect you need to correct, not a popularity ranking. Topaz’s documentation states that each AI model was designed for particular tasks; its controls include noise reduction, recovered detail and focus correction. Use those controls to build a short, repeatable test.
| Source or problem | Starting approach | What to inspect in the preview |
|---|---|---|
| Clean, modern progressive video | Integrated editor enhancement or a general upscale model | Edge halos, natural texture and whether the workflow avoids unnecessary round-tripping |
| Noise, low light or block compression | Restoration model with denoise and detail controls | Residual block noise, smeared texture and flicker in dark areas |
| Portraits and close-ups | Face-oriented model compared with a neutral model | Eyes, teeth, hair and skin consistency across motion |
| Interlaced archive | Deinterlacing and temporal test before upscale | Combing, field order, motion edges and thin horizontal detail |
| Animation or line art | Content-specific model | Line continuity, halos, texture stability and color bleeding |
Do not treat a model label as a guarantee. Use the same source frame range, scale, enhancement strength and export settings when comparing alternatives. Keep the clip long enough to include a face, a pan, a texture-rich area and a difficult shadow or highlight.
How much GPU VRAM, RAM and storage do I need?
VRAM is a practical limit on resolution and model choice, but it is not the only hardware specification. Codec support, bit depth, chroma subsampling, drivers, cooling, power and storage can determine whether a nominally suitable GPU is pleasant to use.
Topaz Video requirements on Windows
Topaz lists a current Windows minimum of 16 GB system RAM, a dedicated GPU with 6 GB VRAM and 45 GB of internal storage. Its recommended Windows configuration is Windows 11, 32 GB RAM, an NVIDIA RTX 30-series-or-newer GPU and at least 8 GB VRAM. Some Starlight models require 10–16 GB or more VRAM, depending on the model, and some are restricted by GPU family or operating system.

DaVinci Resolve planning values
Puget Systems’ current Resolve guidance gives a useful resolution rule of thumb: 8 GB VRAM for 1080p, 12 GB for 4K and 20 GB or more for 6K or 8K timelines. These are planning points rather than guarantees; codec, bit depth and chroma subsampling also affect hardware decoding and playback.
| Workload | Published planning point | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Topaz Video, Windows minimum | 16 GB RAM, 6 GB dedicated VRAM, 45 GB internal storage | Minimum listed configuration; model and operating-system limits still apply |
| Topaz Video, Windows recommended | Windows 11, 32 GB RAM, RTX 30-series-or-newer NVIDIA GPU, 8 GB or more VRAM | Recommended configuration, not a promise of a fixed render speed |
| Resolve, 1080p timeline | 8 GB VRAM | Puget Systems planning guidance; codec and media characteristics matter |
| Resolve, 4K timeline | 12 GB VRAM | Useful 4K planning point, not a universal minimum for every effect |
| Resolve, 6K or 8K timeline | 20 GB or more VRAM | Higher-resolution workloads can need more depending on codec and processing |
For a 4K Resolve project, around 12 GB VRAM is a sensible starting point. A demanding restoration model can require more than that, so check the specific model’s requirement instead of buying on VRAM alone. Also confirm that the GPU has stable drivers, adequate cooling and hardware decoding for the codec, bit depth and chroma subsampling of your media.

Should I use a standalone application or an editor-integrated tool?
Choose an integrated workflow when cuts, color, audio and enhancement must stay in one timeline. Choose a standalone application when restoration controls, model selection, batch processing or a separate enhancement queue matter more than avoiding an extra export.
Standalone restoration workflow
Topaz Video is a desktop application for Mac and Windows that targets upscale, denoise, restoration, stabilization and frame interpolation. It is useful when you need to process many clips independently, compare several models or keep enhancement separate from the edit.

DaVinci Resolve integration
The Topaz plugin for DaVinci Resolve requires Resolve Studio. The free Resolve edition will not load or run that plugin. Topaz also warns that interface responsiveness can decline during 3–4× upscaling, so a short test should include timeline interaction as well as image quality.
RTX Video Super Resolution
NVIDIA describes RTX Video Super Resolution as AI processing on RTX Tensor Cores that removes blocky compression artifacts and upscales playback video. Applications including DaVinci Resolve expose integrations for that processing path. It can be convenient when compatible playback or editing software already provides the option, but it does not replace a restoration model with controls for every source type.
How can I test an upscaler before rendering a whole project?
A controlled preview prevents an attractive single frame from dictating an expensive full render. Use the following sequence for every serious candidate.
- Make a source inventory. Note resolution, frame rate, progressive or interlaced structure, codec, bit depth, chroma subsampling, exposure and the most visible defects.
- Choose representative shots. Include a face, motion, fine lines or text, a textured surface, a dark region and a bright highlight. Add an archival or animation shot if those are part of the project.
- Set one delivery target. Lock the output resolution, frame rate, color space and intended codec before comparing models.
- Run conservative settings first. Start with the model’s ordinary enhancement level. Increase denoise, detail recovery or focus correction only when the preview shows a specific need.
- Review motion at full size. Examine eyes, hair, edges, text, foliage and moving backgrounds frame by frame, then watch the clip at normal speed for shimmer and pulsing.
- Record practical results. Measure render time, peak VRAM behavior, output file size, audio passthrough, subtitles and metadata. Note whether the application remains responsive.
- Render a short final-quality sample. Use the same export codec and color settings planned for delivery. Approve the model only after the encoded file, not just the preview, passes inspection.
Keep the test clips and settings as a small decision record. If a later shot contains a new problem—such as interlacing or extreme low light—run a separate test rather than forcing the approved model onto it.
Is cloud upscaling worth the upload time?
Cloud processing trades local hardware limits for transfer time, queueing and usage costs. It can make sense when your computer lacks the required VRAM or when a one-off project does not justify a hardware upgrade, but the total job time includes more than the provider’s processing estimate.
Topaz’s export tutorial says its cloud-export estimates cover processing only and exclude upload and download time. Calculate the complete cycle: upload the source, wait for any queue, process the clip, download the result and repeat if a setting must be corrected. Large mezzanine files can make transfer time dominate a short enhancement job.

- Use cloud processing when: local VRAM is insufficient, the source can be transferred reliably, deadlines allow queueing and usage charges fit the project.
- Prefer local processing when: footage is sensitive, connectivity is slow, repeated iterations are likely or you need immediate frame-by-frame control.
- Before uploading: check retention, deletion, access, regional storage and billing terms for the service you are considering.
Which export and color checks prevent surprises?
Export settings can undo a good enhancement. Topaz’s export tutorial identifies H.264 and H.265 as common codecs and says H.265 is needed for output above 4K. Treat that as an export requirement to verify for your selected output, not as a reason to use H.265 for every intermediate.
Check the encoded file
- Confirm the frame rate has not changed and that audio starts on the correct frame.
- Check subtitles, captions and metadata if they are required for delivery.
- Inspect color space, gamma, highlights and black levels in the target playback or editing environment.
- Compare file size and visible compression against the approved preview.
- Verify that the output resolution and aspect ratio match the delivery specification.
Keep a high-quality intermediate when more grading or compositing is planned, then create separate delivery encodes. This avoids repeatedly processing an already compressed delivery file.
What should I compare when two upscalers appear similar?
Feature counts are a weak basis for a purchase. Compare the same source and output with the following axes, and write down results from the short test.
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Source coverage | Does it handle progressive, interlaced, noisy, compressed, animated and archival material you actually have? |
| Model specialization | Are there separate controls or models for denoise, faces, focus, stabilization and frame interpolation? |
| Practical output | Can your hardware render the required 1080p, 4K or 8K result without exhausting VRAM or storage? |
| Temporal control | Can you detect and reduce flicker, halos, ringing and texture changes across motion? |
| GPU and operating-system support | Does the specific model run on your GPU family and operating system, with stable drivers? |
| NLE integration | Will the plugin load in your edition of the editor, or will you need an export and relink step? |
| Codec and color handling | Are your codec, bit depth, chroma subsampling, audio, subtitles and color space preserved? |
| Preview and batch workflow | Can you preview difficult shots quickly and queue many clips with repeatable settings? |
| Local versus cloud processing | Which option has the lower total time after rendering, queueing, uploading and downloading? |
| Total cost | Include software, hardware, storage, electricity, usage charges and the cost of failed iterations. |

The result looks sharper but less natural
Lower detail recovery or sharpening, then compare against a neutral model. Look at skin, hair, grass and fabric for repeated patterns or waxy surfaces. If the original is heavily compressed, preserving believable softness can be preferable to adding artificial edges.
Faces change between frames
Reduce face enhancement and test a neutral model. Check whether the eyes, teeth and hairline remain consistent during a head turn. If identity cues are unstable, process the shot with a less aggressive setting or leave that section at a lower scale.

Stop the upscale test and identify field order and interlacing. Apply an appropriate deinterlacing step and retest before judging the enhancement model.
The application runs out of memory
Check the model-specific VRAM requirement and lower the output scale or choose a less demanding model for the preview. Close other GPU-heavy applications, update to a supported driver and render shorter segments to isolate the limit. Do not assume that adding system RAM will solve a VRAM-bound model.

The timeline becomes unresponsive
Topaz warns that UI responsiveness can fall during 3–4× upscaling in its Resolve plugin. Use a short queued render or a standalone pass instead of trying to edit interactively while the enhancement is running.
The exported file is unexpectedly huge or soft
Check whether you changed codec, frame rate, bit depth or chroma subsampling between the preview and final export. Reopen the encoded file, confirm its resolution and inspect it at normal playback speed; a single still image does not reveal temporal compression or softness.
Which setup is sensible for common projects?
I have clean phone footage and an existing Resolve edit
Test Resolve’s integrated enhancement path first to avoid round-tripping. A GPU with about 12 GB VRAM is a practical 4K planning point, subject to the codec and effects in the timeline. If the result introduces halos or unstable detail, export a representative clip to a dedicated restoration application and compare like-for-like.
I have noisy family recordings and limited GPU memory
Prioritize a restoration model with modest denoise and inspect faces and shadows. If local VRAM cannot run the chosen model, compare a lower-demand model or cloud processing after calculating transfer time and usage cost. Keep the original files untouched so you can revise the settings.
I have an interlaced archive for an 8K preservation master
Resolve or another editor may need at least 20 GB VRAM for a 6K or 8K timeline according to Puget Systems’ planning guidance, while some restoration models require 10–16 GB or more on their own. Test field order, deinterlacing, temporal stability and storage before committing to an 8K render. A clean lower-resolution master may be preferable if the source cannot support stable enlargement.
What is the final decision rule?
Pick the workflow that produces the most stable approved sample on your actual footage while fitting your hardware and delivery schedule. Source condition decides the model; output requirements decide the scale and export; VRAM, codec support and operating system decide whether the plan is practical. Only after those checks should software price, batch convenience or cloud capacity influence the final choice.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I upscale video with an 8 GB graphics card?
It can be workable for some 1080p or moderate 4K editor timelines, but available VRAM is shared with the codec, effects and model. Topaz lists 8 GB as part of its recommended Windows configuration, while demanding Starlight models can require 10–16 GB or more, so check the exact model before rendering.
Should I upscale before editing or after the edit is locked?
Upscaling after the edit limits processing to the shots that will actually be delivered and avoids enlarging unused material. Proxies can keep editing responsive, but enhancement should be applied to the camera originals or a high-quality intermediate rather than to a heavily compressed proxy.
Why does my AI-upscaled text shimmer?
Small lettering may not contain enough stable source information for the model to reconstruct it consistently. Test a lower enhancement strength, a model intended for line detail, and a longer motion sample; if characters still change shape, preserve the original text or recreate it in the edit.
Does an AI upscaler automatically improve frame rate?
No. Resolution enlargement and frame interpolation are separate functions. Enable interpolation only when the delivery frame rate requires new frames, then inspect fast motion for warping and doubled edges.
Is cloud processing safer for private footage?
Not automatically. Before uploading, read the service’s retention, deletion, access, regional-storage and billing terms, and decide whether the project permits third-party processing. For sensitive material or many iterations, local processing may reduce transfer and custody concerns.
