Choose an AI tutor as a supervised practice tool, not as a replacement for a teacher or high-impact human tutoring. The best choice is the program that targets a clearly defined skill, explains its reasoning, fits your child’s age and schoolwork, protects personal data, supports accessibility needs, and gives an adult enough visibility to catch errors. Evidence for AI-led tutoring is still emerging; current evidence does not put it on the same footing as established high-impact human tutoring. Plan a short, measurable trial with a baseline and a review date before committing to a longer subscription.

How do I choose an AI tutor for my child?

Start with the child’s specific need, then test whether a program can meet it safely and measurably. “AI tutor” can mean anything from a chatbot that answers homework questions to a structured course with lessons, hints, practice, progress reports and adult controls. Those products should not be judged by the same standard.

1. Name the job the program must do

Write one sentence describing the problem: “Practise multiplication facts,” “build reading fluency,” “prepare for an algebra exam,” “learn conversational Spanish,” or “get a hint without receiving the answer.” A narrow job makes it easier to choose content and to tell whether the tool helped. If the need is a diagnosed learning difficulty, persistent failure, anxiety, or a safeguarding concern, involve the child’s teacher or a qualified professional rather than relying on a general-purpose app.

2. Define success before the child starts

Choose an observable target, such as solving a particular class of equations independently, reading a passage at the expected accuracy, or completing homework with fewer adult prompts. Decide what evidence will count: a teacher-created quiz, a curriculum-aligned exercise, work samples, or a reading-rate check. Record a baseline under ordinary conditions, set a review date, and avoid changing several learning tools at once.

3. Confirm practical constraints

Check the child’s age eligibility, required device, operating system, browser, internet connection and school account requirements. Find out whether an adult must be present, whether the program works offline, and whether a school or district blocks it. Availability, age rules and data terms can differ by country and can change after an account is created, so read the current terms for your location.

Will an AI tutor actually improve math or reading?

It may improve practice and feedback for some children, but there is not yet a vendor-neutral causal effect size that establishes AI-led tutoring as equivalent to high-impact human tutoring. Treat claims about guaranteed grade increases or universal improvement skeptically.

The Stanford National Student Support Accelerator wrote in 2026: “AI-led tutoring software, even software based on learning sciences, offers potential for supplemental practice but does not yet meet the established evidence base or definition of high-impact tutoring.” By contrast, high-impact tutoring as a broader, human-supported approach is associated with learning gains of three to more than 15 months, according to the same organization’s 2026 summary. That figure is not an outcome for AI tutors.

What a fair test looks like

Use the program for a defined period, keep the target skill stable, and compare work completed before and after the trial. Have an adult inspect a sample of answers and explanations instead of relying only on an in-app score. Look for transfer: can the child solve a similar problem without the app, explain the reasoning, and use the skill in class?

Signs the tool is helping

  • The child attempts more problems independently without simply guessing.
  • Explanations become clearer and errors become less repetitive.
  • Performance improves on new, teacher- or curriculum-created tasks.
  • The child can describe when the system might be wrong and ask for human help.
  • Engagement is sustainable without distress, excessive pressure or avoidance of other work.

If scores rise only inside the app, the child is copying answers, or frustration and screen time increase, stop or change the plan. A low result can mean the content, pacing, interface or supervision is wrong rather than that the child lacks ability.

What should an AI tutor do differently from a chatbot?

A useful tutor creates a learning interaction rather than dispensing answers. Compare the program’s behavior during a real lesson, not just its feature list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Explain steps and prompt thinking

Ask a problem whose answer you know. A strong system asks what the child has tried, gives a hint or an intermediate step, and then checks understanding. It should be possible to request a simpler explanation, an example, or a new problem. If the default response reveals the final answer immediately, productive struggle is easily lost.

Use appropriate practice and feedback

Look for a sequence of instruction, guided practice and independent practice. Feedback should identify the misconception and show how to correct it, not merely mark an answer right or wrong. The system should distinguish a calculation slip from a misunderstanding and avoid repeating an item at a level the child has already mastered.

Handle uncertainty and mistakes openly

Test an ambiguous question, a deliberately incorrect claim and a topic outside the program’s scope. The tutor should acknowledge uncertainty, ask for clarification or recommend a human check. It should not invent a textbook citation, pretend to have seen classroom materials it cannot access, or confidently defend an incorrect solution.

Support relationships instead of replacing them

Parents, teachers and tutors still need to set goals, review work, notice confusion and decide when the AI is insufficient. The Pennsylvania Department of Education states: “Human judgement should always be the final step in decision-making.” A product that discourages adult involvement or presents itself as the child’s sole authority is a poor fit.

Is this AI tutoring program safe?

Safety is a product feature, not a promise in marketing copy. Test the child-facing experience and read the provider’s current safety documentation before creating a paid account.

Check age and supervision rules

Confirm the minimum age, consent requirements and whether a parent or educator must supervise. Do not bypass an age gate by entering a false birth date. Ask whether children can communicate with other users, upload images or audio, follow external links, or use an unrestricted general chat alongside lessons.

Test filtering and escalation

Use harmless test prompts that reveal how the system handles bullying, self-harm language, sexual content, personal contact requests and instructions for dangerous acts. A child should receive a calm refusal, age-appropriate guidance and a clear route to a trusted adult or emergency support when appropriate. Filtering should apply to generated text, uploaded content and any community or messaging feature.

Look for monitoring that respects the child

Parents should be able to see meaningful learning activity without covertly recording every conversation. Ask what alerts are generated, who receives them, how long they remain visible and whether the child is told about monitoring. The UK Department for Education’s updated 2025 guidance states: “Safety should not be compromised.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask what happens when the system fails

Find the reporting button, response-time commitment and process for correcting a harmful or inaccurate output. Save the provider’s support contact and cancellation instructions. If a serious incident occurs, preserve the relevant transcript, end the session and notify the school or safeguarding lead where appropriate.

What data does the AI collect?

Read the privacy notice and child-specific terms before the first lesson. Do not assume that an education label means minimal data collection.

Map the data flow

Identify what is collected: account details, age or grade, questions, uploaded work, voice or images, device identifiers, approximate location, usage logs and payment information. Determine which fields are required and which can be left blank. A child should not need to provide a full name, precise location or unrelated profile details for basic practice.

Clarify purpose and model training

Look for separate explanations of service delivery, analytics, personalization and training or improving machine-learning models. Ask whether children’s conversations are used to train a model by default, whether an opt-out is available, and whether opting out changes functionality. Do not rely on a settings label that is not explained in the legal terms.

Check retention, deletion and sharing

Find the retention period for chats, audio, images and progress records; the method for deleting a child’s account; and the timetable for deletion from backups. List every category of third party that receives data, such as hosting, analytics, safety review or advertising providers. Confirm whether data is transferred across borders and which legal rights apply in your country. UNICEF’s Guidance on AI and children, version 3.0 (2025) calls for organizations to “Ensure safety for children” and “Protect children’s data and privacy.”

Use the least data necessary

Turn off optional voice recording, location access, targeted advertising and social features when they are not needed. Use a child account rather than an adult’s personal account, and never paste medical records, school reports or another child’s identifying information into a chat.

Can I see what my child is doing?

Choose a program with an understandable parent or teacher view, not merely a streak counter. Before subscribing, ask to see a sample dashboard or a demonstration account.

Useful visibility

  • Skills attempted, assigned and completed, with dates.
  • Examples of errors and the explanation the child received.
  • Time-on-task and pauses presented as context, not as a grade.
  • Teacher or parent notes, goals and a way to correct an inaccurate level.
  • Alerts for repeated misconceptions, unsafe disclosures or requests for human help.

Questions about control

Can an adult review a transcript, export progress, restrict subjects or pause access? Can the child see what is shared with adults? Does the dashboard distinguish an AI-generated estimate from a verified assessment? Avoid systems that hide critical interactions behind a proprietary score that neither parent nor teacher can interpret.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is it appropriate for my child’s age?

Age fit involves more than a birth-date gate. A program should match the child’s reading level, attention, emotional development, independence and ability to recognize an unreliable answer.

For younger children

Prefer short, clearly bounded activities with an adult nearby, limited open-ended chat and strong controls over voice, images and external links. Check whether instructions can be read aloud and whether the child can signal “I need help” without continuing a confusing exchange.

For older children and teenagers

Look for source checking, citation guidance, exam or homework policies and controls that discourage submitting generated work as the student’s own. Discuss academic honesty before use. A tool that drafts an essay or solves every step may undermine the very skill the class is assessing.

For children who need additional support

Ask the child’s teacher or specialist which accommodations are appropriate. Test font size, contrast, keyboard navigation, captions, text-to-speech, speech-to-text, timing controls and alternative input with the actual child. Do not infer accessibility from a general claim such as “supports all learners.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does it work with my child’s school curriculum?

Curriculum alignment must be verified at the level of standards, sequence and terminology. A program can be excellent at generic arithmetic and still teach a method that conflicts with the child’s class.

Compare the learning map

Ask which country, state or examination framework the content follows, how often it is updated and whether a teacher can assign a specific standard or textbook chapter. Check examples for notation, units, reading lists, spelling conventions and calculator rules used at school.

Use school materials carefully

If uploading worksheets is allowed, confirm who can access them and how long they are retained. Test whether the AI can explain the teacher’s method without claiming that a different method is wrong. For graded assignments, follow the school’s policy on generative AI and require the child to show independent work.

How can I run a safe, useful trial?

A trial should answer one learning question while limiting data and cost. Use the following sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Write the target. Specify the skill, starting level, desired change and review date. Note who will supervise and how the result will be checked.
  2. Read the terms first. Record age eligibility, consent, collection, retention, deletion, sharing, model-training use, cancellation and support contacts.
  3. Create the minimum account. Use a child profile and provide only required information. Disable optional permissions and social functions.
  4. Run a baseline. Give a short task without the AI and save the work. Use a comparable task later, not the app’s own completion badge as the only measure.
  5. Observe the first sessions. Watch whether the tutor asks questions, gives staged hints, handles mistakes and directs the child to an adult when needed.
  6. Review together. Inspect a sample of explanations and the parent dashboard. Ask the child what felt helpful, confusing or uncomfortable.
  7. Check transfer. Re-test the target skill in a different format, ideally with a teacher-created or independently selected task.
  8. Decide at the review date. Continue only if learning, safety and well-being are improving. Delete the account and data, if possible, when the program is no longer needed.

How should I compare two programs?

Keep both finalists on the same checklist. A feature-rich product is not automatically the better choice if its data practices or instructional behavior are unclear.

Decision area Questions to ask Evidence to keep
Age and grade fit Is the child eligible in our country, and is supervision required? Current age policy and consent screen
Subject and curriculum Which standards, sequence, texts and exam rules does it support? Learning map, sample lesson and update date
Instructional design Does it model, hint, question, practise and check transfer? Observed transcript and work sample
Human oversight Can an adult set goals, review work, export records and intervene? Dashboard demonstration and controls
Safety How are harmful requests, disclosures and external contact handled? Safety policy, test prompts and reporting route
Privacy What is collected, retained, shared or used for model training? Privacy notice and deletion instructions
Accessibility and language Does it work with the child’s assistive technology and language needs? Hands-on test with the actual child
Evidence and measurement Are outcomes independently measured, and what will we measure ourselves? Methodology plus baseline and review plan
Device and connectivity What hardware, browser, bandwidth and permissions are required? Technical requirements and school-network test
Price and cancellation Is billing recurring, what is included, and how do we cancel? Checkout total, renewal date and cancellation path
Support Can a parent reach a human when content or safety fails? Support hours, channels and response policy

What red flags mean I should stop using it?

  • The program guarantees a grade increase or presents general tutoring results as proof of its own effectiveness.
  • It gives final answers by default, cannot explain steps, or confidently repeats an error.
  • It asks for unnecessary identifying information, precise location, school records or unrestricted access to contacts.
  • Its privacy notice does not clearly state retention, deletion, third-party sharing or model-training use.
  • There is no adult dashboard, no reporting route and no way to pause or delete the child’s account.
  • Safety filters fail on ordinary tests involving self-harm, sexual content, bullying or dangerous instructions.
  • Accessibility claims cannot be verified with the child’s actual device and support needs.
  • The child becomes distressed, avoids classwork, sleeps less, or spends substantially more time online without learning gains.

How should parents and teachers work with an AI tutor?

Assign people, not software, the decisions that affect a child’s education. An adult should set the objective, choose appropriate content, review important outputs and decide when to change the plan. A teacher can identify the prerequisite skill and explain the classroom method; a parent can establish a predictable routine and notice changes in confidence or well-being; a tutor or specialist can adapt instruction when the child remains stuck.

Tell the child that the AI can be mistaken and that asking a person is a normal part of learning. Establish a simple rule: pause when an explanation conflicts with class notes, feels unsafe, requests personal information or leaves the child more confused. Save examples of recurring errors to discuss with the teacher rather than treating an app score as a diagnosis.

What should I check about price and cancellation?

Because prices, trials and regional taxes vary, compare the complete checkout terms rather than a headline monthly figure. Determine whether the plan renews automatically, whether a free trial converts to paid service, how many child profiles or devices are included, and whether essential safety or reporting features are locked behind a higher tier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test cancellation before committing: note the exact account path, notice period, refund rule and what happens to stored work after cancellation. Keep a copy of the confirmation. A low price is not a saving if the program cannot meet the child’s learning target or requires a second service to provide basic supervision.

How do I make the final decision?

Choose the program that satisfies every non-negotiable requirement and performs best in the short trial, not the one with the longest feature list. A simple decision record can prevent marketing claims from outweighing observed evidence.

  • Required: legal age fit, acceptable privacy terms, safe handling of sensitive prompts, needed accessibility and a workable cancellation path.
  • Educational: a defined target, curriculum or skill alignment, explanations and hints, and a way to measure transfer.
  • Operational: reliable access on the child’s device, understandable adult oversight and responsive support.
  • Review: baseline result, trial observations, independent follow-up result, child’s experience and teacher or parent judgment.

If a required condition fails, do not compensate by assigning a higher score elsewhere. If all conditions pass but the outcome is inconclusive, keep the tool optional and continue with teacher-led or human tutoring support while gathering better evidence.

Frequently asked questions

Can an AI tutor replace a private tutor?

No. It can automate some explanations and practice, but it cannot reliably observe a child’s broader context, coordinate with a school or take responsibility for educational and safeguarding decisions. Use it between human check-ins, with a person responsible for goals and escalation.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

What should my child do when the AI gives a wrong answer?

Have the child stop, identify the exact step that seems wrong and ask the system to explain or reconsider it. If the disagreement remains, compare the work with class materials or a teacher, save the exchange for reporting, and do not submit the unverified answer.

How much screen time should an AI tutoring session use?

There is no universal evidence-based duration that fits every age, subject or child. Set sessions around the child’s attention and school routine, include offline practice and breaks, and shorten or stop them if sleep, mood, physical comfort or other learning activities deteriorate.

Should my child use an AI tutor for graded homework?

Only within the teacher’s stated policy. Ask whether hints, feedback or generated wording are permitted, require the child to retain and explain their own work, and disclose AI assistance when the school requires it.

What if the program cannot support my child’s language or disability?

Do not treat workarounds as an accommodation unless the child’s teacher or specialist agrees they are suitable. Ask the provider for a documented accessibility or language roadmap, test alternative tools with the child, and choose a service that works reliably with the child’s actual needs now.
