Choose the platform that fits your studio’s existing edit, color and finishing workflow—not the one with the longest model list. Runway is the broadest standalone generative workspace; Adobe Premiere Pro is the better choice when generation must remain editable inside an established NLE timeline; and DaVinci Resolve Studio with the Runway plugin is the strongest fit for teams that finish in Resolve and need its color, visual-effects and audio environment. Before signing a subscription, run representative shots through each candidate and price the complete path from generation to approved, conformed master.
This guide explains how the three workflows differ, what to test, how credits translate into finished shots, and which rights and governance questions a professional studio must settle for commercial work.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat should a film studio evaluate before choosing an AI platform?
Start with the work your crew already does and identify where generation will occur. A platform can produce impressive clips yet create more labor if editors must export, rename, transcode and rebuild every result in another application. Map one typical project from ingest through edit, color, sound, review, delivery and archive; then score each platform against that path.
- Timeline integration: Can generated media appear as editable clips where your editors work, or does it require a separate application and round trip?
- Reference and continuity control: Can you supply a frame, image or existing clip and make controlled changes without losing the subject, camera language or lighting?
- Editability: Are results delivered as ordinary media that can be trimmed, layered, replaced and conformed, rather than as an isolated preview?
- Generation quality and speed: How reliably does the selected model produce usable motion, faces, products, environments and shot length at the resolution you deliver?
- Audio: Does the workflow cover dialogue, voiceover, music or sound effects, and can the audio be handed to your mix without guesswork?
- Rights and governance: What permissions, retention controls, user roles and disclosure procedures are required for client and performer material?
- Collaboration and storage: Can producers, editors, artists and legal reviewers find the same versions, and what does storing generations cost?
- Model choice and total cost: Can you select among models for a shot’s needs, and what is the cost after retries, upscaling, review and conforming?
Use the same short test reel for every candidate. Include a continuity-sensitive performance, a product or prop change, a moving camera, a difficult lighting transition and one audio requirement. A platform that wins on a spectacular single clip may lose when the whole sequence must remain coherent and editable.

Which platform is best for a film or video studio?
There is no universal winner. The best choice follows the studio’s “center of gravity”: choose Runway for a broad, self-contained generation and finishing workspace; Premiere Pro when editors need generation directly on the timeline; or Resolve Studio plus the Runway plugin when Resolve is the established finishing hub.
| Studio situation | Best-fit starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mixed projects, rapid visual exploration, or a team that wants generation, transformation and audio in one browser-based workspace | Runway | It combines text, image and video generation with edits to real footage, multiple models, audio tools, upscaling and sequence editing. |
| Editorial department standardized on Premiere Pro and unwilling to leave the NLE for generated inserts or sound effects | Premiere Pro Generative Media Tool | Generated video and custom sound effects are added as editable clips in the Premiere timeline; AI Assistant can organize media and assemble an initial cut. |
| Color- and finishing-led studio whose projects are mastered in Resolve | DaVinci Resolve Studio 19 or later with the Runway plugin | The plugin keeps image and video generation, restyling and timeline import in the Resolve environment; the free Resolve edition cannot load it. |
“Best” here means least friction for your actual crew and deliverables. Keep a second platform available only when a specific model or operation solves a problem your primary system cannot.

What can Runway do in a production workflow?
Runway is the broadest standalone option in this comparison. A project can begin with a text prompt, a still image or an existing clip, then move through generation, alteration, extension, upscaling and audio in the same service. It exposes first-party and partner models in one workflow, which is useful when one model handles a subject or motion better than another.
How does Runway handle changes to existing footage?
For real footage, Runway can swap a backdrop, relight a shot or change an object while preserving the underlying performance. Its Edit Studio applies Aleph 2.0 edits across multi-shot sequences up to 30 seconds at 1080p on paid plans. That makes it suitable for controlled variations—such as changing a product color, replacing a prop or trying a new environment—without rebuilding every shot from a text prompt.
What generation and audio work can happen in Runway?
The service supports text-to-video, image-to-video and video-based generation, then lets a team extend or upscale a result. It also offers dialogue, voiceover and music capabilities. Treat these as production elements that still need editorial selection, continuity checks and a proper mix; an automatically generated track is not a substitute for your sound department’s deliverables.
How does Runway pricing work?
Runway charges credits according to the model, duration and resolution selected. The published annual-billing display lists three relevant tiers:
| Plan | Price shown by Runway (annual billing) | Monthly credits | Credit behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | $12 per month | 625 | Credits reset each monthly cycle. |
| Pro | $28 per month | 2,250 | Credits reset each monthly cycle. |
| Max | $76 per month | 9,500 | Unused credits can roll over for up to one month. |
Those figures are subscription allowances, not a promise of a fixed number of shots. A short, low-resolution generation may consume far fewer credits than a longer, high-resolution attempt on another model. Record actual credit use during your pilot instead of converting the monthly allowance into a headline “clips per month” figure.
When is Runway the wrong center of gravity?
If your editors and colorists already live in a tightly managed NLE and every generated result must be conformed, versioned and reviewed there, a separate workspace can add handoffs. Runway remains useful as a specialist or exploratory tool, but make the export, naming, storage and rights checks part of the test before adopting it as the primary system.
How does Premiere Pro keep AI generation inside the edit?
Premiere Pro’s Generative Media Tool is designed for editors who want generated material to behave like any other clip in the sequence. It creates video clips and custom sound effects directly in the Premiere timeline, accepts optional reference frames, supports Adobe Firefly and partner models, and adds the results as editable clips.

What does “editable” mean in practice?
An editor can trim, move, layer, replace and cut a generated clip using the same sequence tools used for camera media. That matters when a generated insert must land on a specific frame, match a cut, or be swapped after client review. The reference-frame option gives the model a visual anchor rather than relying only on a text description, which can help match a neighboring shot’s composition.

Premiere AI Assistant works on project media rather than replacing editorial judgment. It can organize footage into bins, name and color-label clips, process transcripts, detect slates, add markers, and assemble a stringout or first cut. Use those operations to reduce logging and assembly time, then have an editor verify speaker identity, transcript accuracy, scene order and rights before anything is released.
Where does the Premiere workflow fit best?
Premiere is a strong center for a studio whose editors already exchange project files, productions and review exports in that ecosystem. It is less compelling if Resolve is the non-negotiable finishing environment and generated media will immediately be handed over for extensive color, effects and audio work. In that case, test the round trip against the Resolve-native option rather than judging the generation tool in isolation.
What does DaVinci Resolve Studio add when finishing is the priority?
Resolve is built as an end-to-end post-production environment covering editing, color correction, visual effects, motion graphics, audio post-production and finishing. For a Resolve-standardized team, keeping AI operations near the edit and grade can reduce translation between applications and preserve the project’s existing organization.
What are the Runway plugin requirements?
The Runway plugin requires DaVinci Resolve Studio 19 or later on macOS or Windows. The free edition of Resolve cannot load plugins, so a facility using the free edition must budget for Studio before this workflow is viable.
What can the plugin do?
Inside Resolve, the plugin can generate images and video, restyle clips under the playhead, and import results into the Resolve media bin and timeline. Test those operations with your own bin structure, naming convention, frame rates and color-management setup. The important question is not simply whether a clip appears, but whether assistants and colorists can locate, version and finish it without breaking the established project.
Who should choose this route?
Choose Resolve Studio with the plugin when color continuity, finishing supervision and a single post-production project outweigh the convenience of a separate generative workspace. It is particularly suited to facilities that already train staff, build templates and deliver masters from Resolve. Studios that cut primarily in another NLE should calculate the cost of introducing Resolve, Studio licenses and training before assuming the plugin will save time.
Can AI generation stay inside an editable timeline?
Yes, but the answer depends on the platform. Premiere places generated video and sound-effect results directly in its timeline. Resolve can import plugin-generated images and video into its bin and timeline. Runway can edit multi-shot material in its own Edit Studio, but a studio using another NLE must still define how those results are exported, named, stored and conformed.
During a pilot, require each platform to deliver the same five-minute sequence through approval. Measure the number of exports, manual relinks, format conversions and naming corrections. Include a late client change—such as replacing one generated shot—to see whether the team can preserve handles, audio sync, color management and version history.

Which platform gives the best reference and continuity control?
Continuity is a production problem, not just a prompt-writing problem. Evaluate whether a tool can hold a character’s appearance, a product’s geometry, a set’s lighting and the camera’s movement across neighboring shots.
Use existing footage when performance must remain stable
Runway’s edits to real footage—backdrop swaps, relighting and object changes—are designed for controlled variations of a captured performance. They are useful when the actor’s timing or the camera move is already right and only the environment or prop needs to change.
Use reference frames for editorially placed inserts
Premiere’s Generative Media Tool accepts optional reference frames. Supply a frame that represents the composition you need, then judge the generated clip against the surrounding edit for scale, eyeline, screen direction and lighting. Keep the reference and prompt with the project record so another editor can reproduce the decision.
Test restyling under the playhead in the finishing context
The Resolve plugin can restyle clips under the playhead. Have a colorist check whether the result remains workable in the project’s color-management pipeline and whether the generated image introduces artifacts that become more visible after grading or a large-screen projection.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →How should a studio evaluate generation quality and speed?
Do not score only the prettiest frame. A production-ready result must survive motion, editorial timing, delivery resolution and review. Build a repeatable scorecard with these checks:
- Brief fidelity: Does the shot contain the required subject, action, setting and camera direction?
- Temporal stability: Do faces, hands, text, props and backgrounds remain coherent from frame to frame?
- Continuity: Does the shot match wardrobe, lighting, lens impression, screen direction and the adjacent cut?
- Resolution and detail: Does it hold up at the project’s delivery size, including after any upscale?
- Iteration speed: How long from prompt or reference to a reviewable version, including queue time and downloads?
- Revision cost: When one detail changes, can the team alter that detail or must it regenerate the entire shot?
Run at least three attempts per test shot and record the usable-take rate. A platform that needs fewer retries can be cheaper even when its nominal subscription is higher. Keep the test conditions identical: same target duration, resolution, reference material and acceptance standard.
How should audio be handled in an AI production platform?
Audio support ranges from generated sound effects to dialogue, voiceover and music, but every studio still needs editorial and legal controls. Runway exposes dialogue, voiceover and music capabilities; Premiere’s Generative Media Tool creates custom sound effects in the timeline. Resolve provides the broader post-production environment for audio finishing, while the plugin’s documented functions focus on image and video generation and timeline import.
For a serious test, separate temporary generative audio from final deliverables. Check whether dialogue timing can be edited, whether stems or isolated elements are available, and whether the mixer can replace a generated cue without rebuilding the picture. Confirm performer consent for any synthetic voice or likeness, and document the source and license of music and effects before client delivery.
What rights and governance questions must a studio settle?
Runway states: “As between you and Runway, you retain ownership and all your rights to content you upload and generate on Runway.” That is a vendor contract statement, not a complete clearance opinion. It does not by itself grant permission to use every input, guarantee copyright protection in every territory or resolve performer and client obligations.

Have legal and production teams establish a written policy covering:
- Input permissions: Confirm that the studio may upload footage, scripts, faces, logos, locations and confidential materials.
- Performer and likeness releases: Specify whether generated or altered performances, voices and likenesses are allowed and for which media, territories and terms.
- Music, stock and client assets: Keep licenses and restrictions attached to the project, including limits on model training or redistribution where applicable.
- Confidentiality and retention: Determine who can access prompts, uploaded media and generations, how long they remain available, and how deletion requests work.
- Disclosure: Decide when clients, distributors or audiences must be told that imagery, audio or alterations were generated or materially modified.
- Copyright treatment: Ask counsel how human authorship, edits and source materials affect protection in each territory where the work will be exploited.
Require every vendor agreement and account plan to be reviewed for these points. A platform’s ownership language is useful, but it is only one part of a production clearance file.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do you calculate the real cost per finished shot?
Subscription price is an input, not the result. Calculate the cost of an approved, conformed shot by combining generation charges with the labor and infrastructure around them.

- Log credits or generation fees consumed by successful and failed retries.
- Add upscaling, storage and transfer costs where they apply.
- Measure producer, editor, VFX, color and legal-review time spent selecting and correcting results.
- Include conforming, relinking, render and delivery time in the studio’s primary NLE.
- Divide the total by the number of shots that pass approval, not by the number of previews generated.
Runway’s credit system illustrates why this accounting matters: Standard, Pro and Max provide different monthly allowances, and the same tier can produce different amounts of footage depending on the selected model, duration and resolution. Premiere and Resolve pilots should use the same finished-shot denominator so a convenient timeline feature is not mistaken for a lower total cost.
What pilot should a studio run before committing?
Use a controlled pilot that mirrors a real production, not a collection of novelty prompts.
- Select representative material: Choose one dialogue scene, one effects-heavy shot, one product or prop shot, one environment change and one audio task.
- Define acceptance criteria: Set minimum continuity, resolution, timing, artifact and rights requirements before generating.
- Prepare identical inputs: Use the same reference frames, source clips, prompts, duration and output resolution where each platform supports them.
- Keep an audit log: Save prompts, model names, versions, credit use, operators, dates and rejected outputs.
- Complete the editorial path: Place approved results in the target NLE, perform a basic grade and sound pass, then export the intended review file.
- Stress a revision: Ask for one targeted change after approval and measure how much of the shot and timeline must be rebuilt.
- Review governance: Have production counsel and the client representative inspect inputs, rights records, retention settings and disclosure language.
- Decide by bottleneck: Select the platform that removes the most costly handoff while meeting quality and governance requirements.
What common mistakes lead to a poor platform decision?
Choosing by demo quality alone
A polished ten-second clip says little about continuity, revisions or delivery. Require a sequence and a late-change test before approving a platform.
Converting credits directly into shot counts
Credit consumption varies with model, duration and resolution, and retries are normal. Base forecasts on accepted shots from your own pilot.

Ignoring the finishing handoff
Generation is only one stage. If every result must be exported, transcoded, relinked and regraded, include that labor in the decision.
Assuming ownership language clears every input
Uploader permissions, likeness releases, music licenses, confidentiality and territorial copyright rules remain separate obligations.
Best Value
Overlooking edition and operating-system requirements
The Resolve plugin requires Studio 19 or later on macOS or Windows; a free Resolve installation cannot load it. Verify edition, version and hardware policies for every workstation before rollout.
Letting automation bypass editorial review
AI Assistant can organize media and assemble a first cut, but humans must verify transcripts, slates, scene order, performance continuity and rights before publication.
How should the final decision be made?
Give each candidate a weighted score based on the studio’s actual bottleneck. A color house might weight Resolve integration and finishing control above model variety. A commercial editor might weight timeline editability and rapid reference-based inserts. A small team making many exploratory concepts might weight Runway’s breadth and its ability to move from generation through audio and upscaling in one workspace.
Set a minimum pass mark for rights, security and delivery compatibility; no amount of visual quality should compensate for a failed clearance or an unusable conform. Then compare the measured cost per approved shot and the staff time required to operate the system. Revisit the decision when the studio changes its NLE, delivery resolutions, client disclosure terms or volume of generated work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a small studio start with one AI platform and add another later?
Yes. Define a primary system for project organization and finishing, then add a second platform only for a documented capability gap. Keep prompts, source references, naming rules and rights records portable so a later move does not strand project history.
What should we ask a vendor about storage and deletion?
Ask where uploaded media and generated files are stored, who can access them, how long they persist after cancellation, and whether administrators can delete them on a schedule. Request these answers in contract language rather than relying on a settings-page summary.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow do we budget staff time for AI shots?
Track operator minutes for prompting, selecting, masking, cleanup, editorial placement, color correction, audio replacement and approvals during the pilot. Multiply the average by the number of accepted shots, then add subscription, credit and storage charges.
Should AI-generated clips be labeled in client deliveries?
Establish a disclosure rule with the client and distributor before production starts. The rule may differ for a fully synthetic shot, a background replacement, a voice treatment or a minor cleanup, so record the category and approval for each delivered element.
