Choose an AI model for code analysis or reverse engineering by testing it on representative, authorized tasks—not by assuming the most expensive tier or a vendor’s coding recommendation will work best. Compare whether it reaches correct conclusions, supports them with evidence from the code or permitted analysis output, uses tools appropriately, handles your repository context, and completes the work within your latency, privacy, access, and cost limits. There is no neutral, published head-to-head result establishing one universal winner for this workload.
Start with a small set of tasks drawn from your actual work, run each candidate under the same conditions, and score the completed task rather than token price alone. Provider guidance can help you shortlist models, but your own evaluation should decide which one you use.

What should you optimize for when choosing a model?
Optimize for reliable, reviewable work completed under your constraints. A model that produces a plausible explanation quickly is not necessarily useful if its claims are unsupported, it misses relationships across files, or a reviewer has to redo the analysis. Likewise, a low input-token rate does not tell you what a successful investigation will cost after repeated prompts, tool calls, retries, and output.
For code analysis, the model needs to explain behavior grounded in the code you provide. For reverse engineering, it also needs to perform on the actual permitted inputs you expect to use, such as source, disassembly, or decompiler output. Do not assume success on ordinary source-code questions transfers to binaries or other analysis artifacts.

There is no source-supported universal winner for this exact workload. The current provider materials discussed below give vendor-specific recommendations and product descriptions, not a neutral comparison using matched code-analysis and reverse-engineering tasks. Treat them as shortlist guidance, then make the decision with your own representative cases.
How do you build a fair model evaluation?
A useful evaluation reflects the work you need done and makes it possible to judge the answer. Keep inputs, context, tools, and scoring consistent across candidates; otherwise, a difference in results may come from the setup rather than the model.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches1. Define the work and its boundaries
Write down what you are asking the model to do before selecting candidates. Include the languages and repository size involved, the kind of question to answer, whether the work is static analysis, dynamic analysis, or both, and what evidence a satisfactory response must include. Specify which tools and data the model may access, and confirm that the analysis is authorized.
Include the operating conditions that could affect your choice: whether code may leave your environment, where processing is permitted to occur, who may access the results, and whether an account, plan, allowlist approval, or particular workspace configuration is required. These are selection criteria, not administrative afterthoughts: a model that cannot be used under your organization’s constraints is not a viable candidate.
2. Select representative tasks with checkable answers
Build a compact task set that resembles real investigations, not a collection of generic coding trivia. Useful examples include tracing a function across files, explaining a data flow, identifying behavior from source, analyzing a binary or decompiled output where permitted, and writing up a finding with file-level evidence.
For each task, decide in advance what counts as correct. Use a known answer, an existing test, or qualified reviewer judgment as the reference. Ask for enough detail to distinguish a correct explanation from a convincing guess: for example, require the answer to identify the relevant code locations and describe how those locations support the conclusion. A model should be allowed to say that the evidence is insufficient.

Give each candidate the same task, relevant repository material, and available tools. Use the intended operating mode—such as an IDE or CLI coding agent, API integration, repository-connected workflow, or local deployment—because model quality alone does not determine what the system can inspect or do. Record the model and mode used, the context supplied, and any meaningful configuration that affects the run.

Do not give one candidate extra files, a better prompt, or more opportunities to retry and then treat the results as a model-only comparison. If your real workflow includes retrieval, shell access, tests, or analysis tools, evaluate those capabilities as part of the system you will actually deploy.
4. Score evidence and behavior, not just the final wording
For every answer, check whether the model follows control flow and data flow correctly, accounts for relationships across files, and ties claims to source locations or reproducible output. Note whether it identifies missing evidence and uncertainty, and whether it invents behavior that is not supported by the inputs.
Score the usefulness and accuracy of tool calls as well. Did the model search or inspect the right material, run only approved tests, and report the result accurately? A polished answer does not make an incorrect tool action harmless, especially when the task involves code execution or security findings.
5. Measure end-to-end performance
Track reviewer-rated correctness or success rate, evidence precision, useful tool calls, completion time, and total cost for each completed task. Include failed and abandoned runs in cost accounting: a cheap attempt that has to be discarded or repeated may be more expensive in practice than a costlier attempt that succeeds.
Run enough representative cases to see whether quality is consistent, not merely whether a model succeeded once. Record false positives and unsupported conclusions as well as correct findings. If the output will inform a consequential decision, keep human review and appropriate verification in the workflow rather than treating the model’s explanation as proof.
Which evaluation criteria matter most?
Use a scorecard that reflects the consequences of error in your own work. The categories below are practical evaluation axes, not a published benchmark or universal weighting system.
| Criterion | What to examine |
|---|---|
| Code comprehension | Whether the explanation correctly follows control flow, data flow, APIs, and relationships across files. |
| Evidence quality | Whether claims point to specific source locations or reproducible output, and uncertainty is stated when evidence is missing. |
| Reverse-engineering fit | Whether performance holds on the permitted inputs you actually use, including source, disassembly, or decompiler output as applicable. |
| Tool use | Whether the system searches, inspects files, runs approved tests, uses debugging or analysis tools appropriately, and reports results accurately. |
| Reliability | Whether representative cases produce consistently correct results, with acceptable false-positive and unsupported-claim rates. |
| Context handling | Whether needed repository material remains available and salient in longer sessions, including how the system handles context limits and compaction. |
| Speed and cost | Latency and total spend for successful work, not just the advertised or listed input-token rate. |
| Governance | Data handling, deployment geography, account access, plan eligibility, and authorization for the security work. |
| Workflow fit | Compatibility with your IDE or CLI, API, repository connection, sandbox, review process, and human approval needs. |
Weight these criteria according to the task. For an exploratory code walkthrough, speed may be important; for a security finding, evidence quality, false positives, and reviewability may matter more. A single aggregate score can conceal a serious weakness, so keep the individual results visible and define any minimum quality bar before choosing.

How should you use provider model tiers as a shortlist?
Vendor recommendations can suggest which tiers to test, but they are not independent evidence that a model will perform best on your repository or reverse-engineering tasks. Anthropic’s Claude Code guidance, dated September 22, 2026, recommends Sonnet for most coding work, Opus for harder reasoning, and Haiku for fast, simpler, or high-volume work. That is guidance for its own products, not a matched cross-provider result.
| Anthropic model tier | Vendor’s described fit | How to treat it in your evaluation |
|---|---|---|
| Sonnet | Most coding work; described as fast, capable, and cost-efficient. | A reasonable starting candidate for routine code-analysis tasks, subject to your quality bar. |
| Opus | Deeper reasoning for large cross-cutting refactors, difficult debugging, or architectural decisions. | Test on cases where cross-file or difficult reasoning is central, and check whether the added capability justifies its cost. |
| Haiku | Quick lookups, simple edits, and high-volume scripted runs. | Test on bounded, repeatable work; do not assume speed or low price is enough for difficult investigations. |
Anthropic’s support guidance also notes that model names, versions, and availability change; in Claude Code, the /model command reflects availability for the signed-in account. Confirm the model actually available to your account rather than relying on a name in an older recommendation.
Google documents Gemini 4 Argon Cyber Permissive for defensive cybersecurity applications that include vulnerability discovery, reverse engineering, exploit verification, and patch generation. Its documentation says access is allowlist-based, and access to an earlier cyber model does not automatically transfer. Consider it only if the defensive use case, approval, region, and applicable terms fit your situation; it is not a generally available option for every reader.
For other providers, including OpenAI, use current official model and pricing pages to identify candidates for your environment. The available evidence does not establish a neutral ranking across providers for this workload, so avoid treating tier names, advertised capabilities, or price as a substitute for the same task-based evaluation.

How do context, tools, and workflow change the choice?
A model is only one part of the analysis system. The way a tool loads repository material, searches files, retains conversation history, runs approved checks, and exposes results to a reviewer can change both the quality and cost of the completed task.
Repository context is not the same as useful context
Long sessions can accumulate conversation and project context. A large context window may help make more material available, but it does not by itself ensure the relevant code is included, remains salient, or is interpreted correctly. Test your actual repository workflow: what files are supplied, how cross-file references are surfaced, and what happens when a session grows.
Anthropic’s pricing page, checked October 26, 2026, lists a 1 million-token context window at standard pricing for Claude 4.6 and later, with stated exceptions. Treat that as a provider- and model-specific published limit, not a guarantee that any task will use or benefit from that much context. Check the current model’s documentation and test the workflow you intend to use.

Tool access must match the task
Compare systems in the mode you intend to operate. An IDE or CLI agent, an API integration, a repository-connected security workflow, and a local deployment can differ in repository access, available tools, execution controls, and review steps. A model that explains a provided snippet well may not be the best fit if your real task depends on navigating a repository or validating a finding.
Recommended Free Tools
For consequential results, require evidence and a review path. The UK AI Security Institute’s Inspect project describes reusable datasets, agents, tools, scorers, and sandboxing options for untrusted model code. It is one possible evaluation framework, not a required product. OpenAI describes Codex Security as a research preview that connects to GitHub repositories, builds a codebase-specific threat model, investigates vulnerabilities, attempts to validate potential findings in an isolated environment, and proposes patches for human review. Availability depends on eligible plans and workspace settings; check current access and billing. This product description does not establish that a general-purpose model is best at reverse engineering.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you estimate the cost of a real task?
Compare total cost per completed task, not just price per million tokens. Include the full run: repeated repository context, input and output, tool use where billed, failed attempts, retries, and any additional model pass needed to reach an acceptable result. Pair the cost figure with quality and completion time so a low-cost but unusable answer does not appear to win.
For an API workflow, Anthropic’s pricing page checked October 26, 2026 lists the following rates for prompts up to 100,000 tokens. The page gives a higher rate above that threshold for Haiku. These are listed API token rates, not necessarily the total cost under every plan or platform; verify current prices, model availability, and pricing conditions before budgeting.
| Model listed by Anthropic | Input per million tokens | Output per million tokens | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Opus 5.5 | $4 | $20 | API prices shown on the page checked October 26, 2026. |
| Claude Sonnet 5.5 | $2 | $10 | API prices shown on the page checked October 26, 2026. |
| Claude Haiku 5.5 | $0.10 | $0.50 | For prompts up to 100,000 tokens; the page lists a higher rate above that threshold. |
OpenAI’s API pricing page lists model-specific input, output, and cached-input rates, along with modifiers for some processing modes and regional endpoints. As an example of a condition that can affect a quote, the page checked October 26, 2026 states a 10% uplift for specified regional-processing endpoints on eligible models released on or after March 5, 2026. Do not apply that uplift to every model or endpoint; check the current rate table for the exact model and configuration you plan to use.
OpenAI’s prompt-caching documentation says cache reuse depends on matching prompt prefixes. It recommends monitoring cached-token usage, cache writes, latency, and realized cost. Repeated context may therefore cost less when caching works, but caching does not remove the need to include relevant context or guarantee a cache hit. Measure realized usage in your own evaluation instead of assuming a saving.
Anthropic’s cost-optimization documentation recommends comparing cost per completed task. It reports internal measurements in which rerunning low-effort failures at high effort cost about 40% less than running all attempts at high effort at the same pass rate. That is a provider-reported internal result, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee for your tasks. It supports testing a staged workflow—where acceptable—rather than assuming every attempt needs the strongest setting.
Best Value
When does a staged model workflow make sense?
A staged workflow can reserve stronger reasoning for tasks that need it, but only if lower-cost first attempts meet a defined quality bar and the escalation step catches failures. Test the routing policy as a whole, including its mistakes and retries; do not infer savings from tier prices alone.
- Route bounded routine work to a faster or lower-cost candidate. Examples might include a quick lookup or a simple, repeatable task, if your evaluation shows the candidate meets the required accuracy and evidence standard.
- Define a clear escalation trigger. Escalate when the answer lacks evidence, misses a cross-file relationship, reports uncertainty, fails an approved check, or otherwise falls below your pre-set bar.
- Re-run the case with a stronger reasoning candidate or additional review. Preserve the original task and context needed to compare the result, and record whether the second pass resolves the issue.
- Review the aggregate outcome. Compare pass rate, false positives, completion time, and cost per accepted task against an all-stronger-model baseline.
Anthropic also reports that only 2 of about 14,000 turns in its internal tests exceeded 64,000 output tokens. This is a provider-reported observation from those tests, not a sizing rule for a code-analysis workflow; use your own task’s output requirements and limits when configuring a system.
What safeguards should you require for security-related analysis?
Use the model only for work you are authorized to perform, and set boundaries around the code, repository, tools, and data it may access. For defensive security conclusions, require a human-review path and suitable verification before treating a finding or proposed patch as actionable.
- Keep the evaluation focused on permitted code and inputs, especially when analyzing binaries or decompiled material.
- Check whether the system’s data handling, deployment geography, account eligibility, and workspace settings meet your requirements.
- Sandbox untrusted model-generated code where appropriate, and allow only approved tool actions.
- Record the evidence supporting a finding and distinguish a model’s hypothesis from a verified behavior.
- Review proposed changes before applying them; a model-generated patch is not automatically safe or correct.
Evaluation tools can help structure tests, and isolated validation can strengthen a security workflow, but neither makes an unverified explanation true. Keep the acceptance decision with a qualified reviewer and the checks appropriate to the consequence of being wrong.
What is a practical decision rule?
Choose the least costly and fastest candidate that clears your pre-defined quality, evidence, governance, and workflow requirements across representative cases. If no candidate clears them, adjust the workflow, improve context or verification, or keep the work with a human rather than choosing a model based on a marketing claim.
- Shortlist candidates using current provider documentation, account access, and the tools you can actually deploy.
- Run the same authorized tasks with the same context and permitted tools.
- Reject candidates that make unsupported claims or fail your minimum correctness and evidence bar.
- Compare successful-task cost, latency, repeatability, and operational fit among the candidates that remain.
- Recheck prices, model names, plan eligibility, regional conditions, and access terms before purchase or rollout.
Model names, rates, context limits, access conditions, and preview status can change quickly. The provider information above was checked October 26, 2026; confirm volatile details on the relevant official documentation before making a current purchasing or deployment decision.

Can an AI model prove that a vulnerability is exploitable?
No. A model can propose an explanation or finding, but proof requires evidence appropriate to the claim, such as reproducible behavior and qualified review. Treat an unvalidated result as a lead to investigate, not as a confirmed vulnerability.
Can I use code from a private repository with an AI model?
That depends on your organization’s authorization and the provider’s current data-handling, account, and deployment terms. Check those conditions for the exact service and configuration before submitting private code.
Do I need a large context window to analyze a large repository?
Not necessarily: the important question is whether the workflow surfaces the relevant files and relationships reliably. Test how your chosen system handles repository context and long sessions rather than selecting on a context-window figure alone.
Is a security-focused model automatically better for reverse engineering?
No. A provider’s intended-use description is not a neutral performance comparison. Test the model on your permitted reverse-engineering inputs and verify account eligibility and terms for any restricted offering.
