Choose an AI image generator by testing four things in the workflow you will actually use: whether creators can operate the interface with their assistive technology, whether each output has a useful description for comparing alternatives, whether the model represents people and contexts without harmful assumptions, and whether your publishing process can produce accurate, purpose-specific alternative text. No generator makes a finished image inclusive by itself. A person still needs to inspect the image, check its meaning and representation, and write or verify the text alternative required by the page, post or document.

The strongest evidence available is feature- and date-specific rather than a head-to-head ranking. Adobe Research reported an image-description feature for Firefly on June 15, 2026, while Adobe’s September 2024 conformance report documented substantial text-alternative gaps within its then-evaluated scope. Treat both as dated evidence, not proof that any service is accessible in every workflow.

What does inclusive media require from an AI image generator?

Inclusive media has two separate accessibility jobs. First, the people creating and selecting images must be able to use the generator. Second, the image that reaches an audience must have an alternative that communicates its purpose to people who cannot see it. A tool can succeed at one job and fail at the other.

For published content, use the current Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) as your baseline. WCAG 2.2 is a W3C Recommendation dated December 12, 2024, and Success Criterion 1.1.1 requires a text alternative for non-text content, subject to its stated exceptions. Choosing a particular service does not make the page conformant; conformance depends on the image, its context and the way you publish it. Read the WCAG 2.2 Recommendation and the W3C Images Tutorial when you define your editorial policy.

Accessibility also includes the review path. A blind or low-vision creator may need to know whether an output follows the prompt, how two candidates differ and which one is suitable for a presentation, article or social post. A description generated by the service can support that comparison, but it is not automatically the final alt text for a reader. Alt text must describe the image’s role in the published context, not simply list everything a model noticed.

How should you compare AI image generators for inclusive media?

Use the four axes below as a procurement and pilot checklist. Ask for current documentation, then test the exact plans, models, applications and export paths your team will use. The available evidence does not provide independent comparative scores for individual services, so a product’s marketing claim should never substitute for a workflow trial.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Evaluation axis What to verify in a real trial Evidence to request
Accessible interface and review Prompt entry, generation status, result navigation, enlargement, regeneration and selection work with the keyboard, screen reader and other input methods used by intended creators. Accessibility documentation with its date, product version, evaluation scope, assistive technologies and known gaps.
Descriptions of actual outputs Each candidate receives a description that adds information about the rendered image, allowing a user to compare alternatives rather than hearing the original prompt repeated. A description feature’s scope, supported surfaces and examples; test whether descriptions update after edits or variations.
Representation and assumptions Prompts covering the people, roles, settings and cultures you publish are represented without stereotyped defaults, omissions or invented characteristics. Responsible-AI or design guidance, plus your own documented output review across representative scenarios.
Publishing workflow The selected asset can be paired with concise, context-specific alternative text and receives a human check for meaning, errors and audience. CMS or export behavior, editorial ownership of alt text, and a review record for the final published asset.

Can the intended creators operate the interface?

Start with the people who will generate and approve images, not with a feature list. Have them sign in, enter a prompt, submit it, wait for completion, move among variations, inspect a result, regenerate it, download or place it in the publishing system, and recover from an error. Test keyboard-only operation, a screen reader, zoom or magnification, high-contrast settings and any native platform accessibility features the team relies on.

Record whether focus moves to a newly generated result, whether controls have names that assistive technology can announce, whether progress and errors are conveyed without sight, and whether a user can tell which variation is selected. A visually simple grid can still be unusable if the order of results is not exposed or if a regeneration button has no accessible name.

Request an accessibility statement or conformance report and read its boundaries. Check the report date, the product and version assessed, the user journeys included, the assistive technologies used and the issues marked as unresolved. A report is evidence about that scope and date; it is not a guarantee for a later model, a redesigned interface or a third-party plug-in.

Do descriptions help users compare the images that were actually generated?

A useful description describes the rendered output, including relevant subjects, actions, setting, composition or tone. It should help a person determine whether the image is faithful to the prompt and choose among alternatives. A prompt echo such as “a diverse team in an office” does not tell a user whether the generated scene actually contains the requested people, arrangement or details.

Adobe Research reported on June 15, 2026 that Firefly automatically produces detailed alt-text descriptions for generated or edited images. Adobe says the feature is intended to help blind and low-vision creators assess images for presentations, articles, social posts and other work, with descriptions of each output’s elements and tone. Adobe Applied Scientist Josh Myers-Dean said blind and low-vision users “need to know if an image is faithful to their prompt, and they want details that help them choose the image they prefer.” This is a statement of the feature’s purpose from Adobe, not an independent usability study. See the Adobe Research report for the feature description.

During your trial, compare the service’s description with the image itself. Look for missing people, incorrect relationships, wrong text, implausible settings and unwarranted claims about identity. Check whether descriptions are available for every variation and after edits, whether a creator can copy them into an editorial system, and whether a human can correct them before publication.

Keep the distinction explicit in your process: an output description is a review aid; final alt text is written for a particular page, audience and purpose. The same image may need different alternatives in a news story, a product tutorial and a decorative banner.

How do you test representation instead of trusting a model’s defaults?

Build a prompt set from the people and situations your organization actually depicts. Vary names, occupations, age groups, skin tones, disabilities, clothing, family structures, locations and cultural settings where those details are relevant. Generate several results for each scenario, retain the prompts and outputs, and have reviewers note stereotypes, omissions, inconsistent treatment and details the model invented.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not ask a model to infer a personal or cultural characteristic when the creator can state the characteristic that matters to the image. Apple’s Generative AI design guidance warns that models learn from their data and can favor common information, producing harmful unintended bias and stereotypes. Its guidance recommends asking people for information needed by the feature, testing across diverse people and correcting stereotypes. It is design guidance rather than a comparative score for any product; consult the Apple Human Interface Guidelines for Generative AI.

Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI transparency note similarly explains that publicly available text and image data used for large-scale models contains societal biases related to race, gender, religion, age and other groups, and that models can behave in unfair, unreliable or offensive ways. That general warning supports careful review; it does not establish that every generator uses the same data or behaves identically. Read the Microsoft transparency note alongside your own tests.

Representation review is not a one-time approval. Re-run the prompt set when a provider changes a model, safety system, default style or image-editing feature, and whenever your editorial subjects change. Keep examples of both acceptable and rejected outputs so reviewers apply the same standard over time.

Can the selected image move cleanly into an accessible publishing workflow?

Before adoption, trace one asset from generation to publication. Confirm that the download or API preserves the image you reviewed, that your CMS exposes an alt-text field, that the field is editable by the responsible author and that the review step is recorded. If a service inserts a description automatically, treat it as a draft and require a person to verify it against the final crop, overlay, link destination and surrounding copy.

Assign ownership. The person who understands the image’s editorial purpose should approve the alternative, while a subject-matter reviewer can check names, symbols, language and cultural meaning. A generator cannot know what information a particular article considers essential unless your team supplies that context.

What alt text should you publish for each image purpose?

Classify the image before writing. The W3C tutorial and Section508.gov guidance emphasize purpose, not an inventory of every visible detail. Alternative text should be short and direct, communicate the same information as the visual, describe relevant content rather than appearance alone, avoid repeated information and use the same language as the surrounding content. Apply these patterns:

Image purpose What the alternative should do Typical HTML pattern
Informative Convey the essential information the image adds to the surrounding text. <img src="team.jpg" alt="Engineers review a prototype at a workbench.">
Decorative Communicate no information; use a null alternative so assistive technology can skip it. <img src="swirl.png" alt="">
Functional Describe the action or destination of a linked image or button, not its visual appearance. <a href="/pricing"><img src="arrow.png" alt="View pricing"></a>
Image of text Include the same words when the image contains text that cannot reasonably be presented as ordinary text. <img src="notice.png" alt="Applications close on 30 September.">
Complex image Provide a complete text equivalent for detailed information such as a graph or diagram, usually in nearby text or a linked long description. <img src="chart.png" alt="Bar chart of quarterly revenue; detailed data follows in the table below.">

Do not describe a decorative image merely because a generator supplied an elaborate caption. Conversely, do not shorten an informative image until the fact that makes it useful disappears. When the surrounding paragraph already states the same information, avoid repeating it in the alt text; describe the additional meaning the image contributes.

How can you run a repeatable evaluation before choosing a service?

A small, documented pilot reveals more than a vendor demo. Use the same prompts, assistive technology and publishing path for every candidate, while allowing each service’s normal workflow to operate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Define the use cases. List the formats and audiences you support, such as editorial illustrations, instructional diagrams, social graphics or presentation images. Mark which images will be informative, functional, decorative, text-heavy or complex.
  2. Identify the users. Name the creators, editors and approvers who will operate the service. Record their screen readers, keyboard-only practices, magnification, language needs and other input methods; do not assume one person’s experience represents the whole team.
  3. Collect current documentation. Save the accessibility statement or conformance report, publication date, product version, evaluation methods, tested assistive technologies and listed limitations. Flag claims that apply only to a beta, a particular application or an older release.
  4. Prepare a representative prompt set. Include ordinary editorial scenes and cases where representation matters. State relevant characteristics directly when they are part of the intended message, rather than asking the model to guess them.
  5. Test creation and review. Have intended creators complete prompting, generation, variation selection, editing, error recovery and export. Ask them to compare descriptions of several actual outputs and note where a description is missing, inaccurate or too vague to support a choice.
  6. Inspect representation. Use at least several outputs per scenario. Have reviewers identify stereotypes, omissions, implausible details and incorrect assumptions, and preserve the examples with their prompts for later regression checks.
  7. Complete publication. Put a selected asset into the real CMS or document template. Write the alternative according to its purpose, check the final crop and any overlaid text, then have a second person verify meaning and language.
  8. Document a decision and triggers. Keep a short record of successful workflows, blocking barriers, unresolved risks and the evidence date. Schedule a new check when the provider changes a model or interface, when your publishing system changes or when a new audience or image type is introduced.

This process produces evidence your team can revisit without pretending that a single pass is a universal accessibility certification.

What should you ask a generator provider before procurement?

Written answers are useful, but ask the provider to demonstrate each answer in the product version you will buy. Include these questions in an accessibility and responsible-AI review:

  • Which web, desktop or mobile surfaces are covered by your accessibility documentation, and what are the report’s evaluation date and product version?
  • Which screen readers, browsers, operating systems, keyboard paths, magnification tools and native accessibility features were tested?
  • Can a user who cannot see the canvas identify every generated variation, its status, its controls and the currently selected result?
  • Are descriptions generated from the actual rendered image, and are they available after edits, variations, crops and compositing?
  • Can a creator edit, copy or export a description without losing the image’s association with it?
  • What known issues affect text alternatives, keyboard operation, focus order, status announcements or error recovery?
  • What controls exist for specifying relevant people, cultures, languages or disabilities instead of relying on inferred characteristics?
  • How can customers report a stereotyped, unsafe or materially incorrect output, and how are model or policy changes communicated?
  • Does your export or integration preserve an editable alt-text field, and can an organization require human approval before publication?

A provider that cannot answer these questions may still be usable for a narrowly supervised project, but the uncertainty belongs in your risk record and adoption decision.

What does the Adobe Firefly evidence show—and what does it not show?

Firefly illustrates why dates and scope matter when you evaluate accessibility claims. Adobe Research’s June 15, 2026 report describes automatic detailed descriptions for generated or edited images, aimed at helping blind and low-vision creators assess outputs and choose among them. The report explains the intended benefit and quotes an Adobe scientist; it does not report an independent head-to-head usability test or establish performance for every Firefly surface.

Adobe’s Firefly Accessibility Conformance Report, dated September 2024, says its evaluation used screen readers, keyboard-only operation, native platform accessibility features and manual inspection of Accessibility API output. For the product and scope evaluated then, Adobe marked Firefly as not supporting sufficient text alternatives for most images, including text-to-image generated content and generative-fill results. That is a significant historical caveat, not a claim about every later version. Read the September 2024 Firefly Accessibility Conformance Report, check for newer documentation, and test the workflow your team will actually publish.

The practical lesson is to treat a new description feature and an older conformance finding as two separate pieces of evidence. A description can improve image selection while the surrounding interface or publication path still needs work. Conversely, a conformance report can identify barriers without telling you whether a later feature helps your creators compare outputs.

How should you maintain inclusive image generation after launch?

Make accessibility part of ordinary editorial operations rather than a one-off vendor check. Store the prompt, chosen output, generated description, final alternative text, reviewer and publication context with the project record when privacy and retention rules allow. This makes corrections possible when an image is reused in a new context.

Review a sample of published images periodically for purpose classification, concise wording, language consistency and correspondence with the final crop. Include blind and low-vision creators or users in usability reviews when possible, and pay them for their expertise. When a model update changes representation or descriptions, compare new outputs with the examples from your pilot before approving the update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate three decisions in your policy: whether the interface is operable, whether the generated content is suitable and whether the published alternative is meaningful. Requiring all three prevents a convenient description feature from masking a blocked workflow or an inaccurate final caption.

What are the most common failure modes, and how do you fix them?

The interface works visually but not with a keyboard or screen reader

Ask the provider to demonstrate focus movement, result announcements, variation labels, progress, errors and selection using the assistive technology your creators use. If a critical step cannot be completed, provide an accessible alternate workflow or choose a service whose evaluated path supports it; do not ask a creator to surrender the selection task to a sighted colleague as the default.

The tool repeats the prompt instead of describing the image

Compare descriptions against several actual outputs, including deliberately difficult prompts. If the text does not reveal wrong subjects, relationships, layout or tone, use it only as a weak draft and require a human visual or collaborative review before selection and publication.

The output encodes stereotypes or omits the people requested

State relevant characteristics directly, vary prompts and retain rejected examples. Escalate recurring patterns to the provider, adjust the concept or commission a different visual approach; never publish a stereotype simply because it is the model’s most common result.

The generated description becomes the published alt text unchanged

Classify the image’s purpose and rewrite the alternative for the page’s audience and surrounding copy. Remove details that are irrelevant or already stated, add the information the image uniquely conveys, and provide a longer equivalent for complex data when a short alt cannot carry it.

A report is treated as a permanent accessibility certificate

Check the report’s date, version, scope and known gaps each time the product or integration changes. Pair documentation with a current hands-on trial and record what your own users experienced.

How do you make the final choice?

Select the generator that lets your intended creators complete the whole task, gives them enough information to compare real outputs, produces representation you can responsibly review and fits a publishing process with accountable human approval. If a candidate excels at image quality but blocks an essential user, it is not suitable for that workflow; if it offers descriptions but your team publishes them without context-specific editing, the accessibility risk remains.

Write the decision in operational terms: supported users and assistive technologies, tested workflows, output-review findings, known documentation gaps, alt-text ownership and the event that will trigger re-evaluation. That record is more defensible than a blanket claim that one generator is inclusive. Use the standards and guidance from W3C, Section508.gov, and the dated provider evidence above to keep the choice tied to purpose and audience.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should an organization retest its chosen image generator?

Retest after a model, safety policy, interface, integration or publishing-system change, and whenever you add a new image type or audience. Keep a small set of representative prompts and compare new results with the approved examples so a regression is visible.

Who should approve alternative text for an AI-generated image?

The person responsible for the page or publication should approve the wording because they know its purpose and surrounding text. A second reviewer with subject or cultural knowledge can check names, symbols, language and meaning before release.

What evidence should we retain from an accessibility pilot?

Keep the tested product version and report date, assistive technologies used, task results, representative prompts, selected and rejected outputs, description examples, final alternatives and unresolved barriers. This record lets the team distinguish a provider change from an editorial mistake.

What should we do when a complex AI-generated diagram cannot be explained briefly?

Use a concise alt text that identifies the diagram and points to a nearby complete text equivalent, such as a data table or structured explanation. Ensure the equivalent contains the relationships and values a reader would otherwise obtain from the visual.
