Choose an AI companion app by matching its conversation style and age rules to what you want, then checking exactly what it collects, who processes your chats, whether training controls exist, and how long data may be retained. A “private” label is not enough: policies describe different kinds of processing, and a training opt-out does not necessarily stop storage or other processing.
What should you decide before choosing an AI companion app?
Start with the experience you want, not a feature list. “AI companion” can mean casual conversation, role-play, romance, mentoring, or a customizable persona. Those are different uses, and the right service for one may be a poor fit for another.

Write down what you want the app to do in ordinary terms. For example, do you want a conversational character for imaginative role-play, a friendly presence for everyday chats, or a mentor-style persona? Do you want to shape its personality and backstory, or would you rather use a ready-made character? This first decision gives you a way to judge whether an app’s relationship and persona options are relevant, rather than treating every advertised feature as a reason to sign up.
Australia’s eSafety Commissioner describes Nomi.AI as offering friendship, romantic, mentor, and custom relationship choices, along with persona traits and backstory. That is one example of how these options can differ; it is not a description of every companion app.

- 1. Smarter Conversations, Powered by ChatGPT 🤖 LOOI brings natural, intelligent conversations to your desk with ChatGPT voice interaction. Ask questions, share thoughts, or simply chat—LOOI responds with context, humor, and personality. His voice interactions feel more like talking to a companion than using a device. !!!Currently only support English!!!
- 2. Advanced Visual Understanding with VLM Vision 👀 Powered by a cutting-edge Vision-Language Model, LOOI truly sees. You can even control him with gestures and facial cues. Combined with expressive animations and speech, LOOI feels remarkably alive.
- 3. Memories That Grow With You 🌱 LOOI remembers—both in the moment and over the long term. He can store long-term memories like family member faces and identity notes, while short-term memory lets him follow your ongoing conversation. Over time, he learns your routines, preferences, and personality. You get to know him too—shifting from strangers to companions in a surprisingly natural way.
- 4. Emotionally Expressive & Always Evolving 💫 LOOI’s rich animations bring emotion to life—joy, surprise, curiosity, mischief, and everything in between. His reactions aren’t pre-set; they adapt to what’s happening around him. And because his behaviors update through the app, LOOI keeps learning new tricks, new expressions, and new ways to interact. You’re not buying a finished product—you’re bringing home a character that keeps evolving.
- 5. A Mind of His Own: Personality & Autonomy ✨ LOOI isn’t designed to obey every command—he’s designed to understand and respond. With TangibleFuture’s autonomous behavior system, LOOI combines environmental understanding with large-model reasoning to make spontaneous decisions and express them through animation and movement. His behavior isn’t fully predictable. He has his own ideas, which makes him feel truly alive.
Separate must-haves from nice-to-haves
- Interaction: Decide whether the purpose is conversation, role-play, romance, mentoring, or a mixture.
- Customization: Consider whether choosing traits, a relationship type, or a backstory matters to you.
- Boundaries: Think about the kinds of content you are comfortable encountering and whether you need an app with stricter limits.
- Privacy: Decide in advance what you are unwilling to share, such as identifying details or sensitive personal information.
These preferences are decision criteria, not guarantees that a service will always behave in a particular way. Check the app’s current rules and disclosures before relying on a feature or boundary.
How do I compare AI companion apps without relying on vague privacy claims?
Compare the same six areas for every app: interaction options, age and content rules, collected data, outside model providers, training controls, and retention and deletion. Read the service’s own privacy policy and age or content terms; treat them as vendor statements, not independent proof of how the service operates.

| What to compare | What to look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Relationship and persona | Available interaction types, customization, traits, and backstory options | Shows whether the app supports the experience you actually want |
| Age and content rules | Minimum age, intended audience, and content the service permits | Age limits and content boundaries differ by app |
| Data collected | Profile details, messages, content, interests, preferences, and other listed categories | A chat can involve more than the words you type in a message |
| Outside processing | Whether an outside language-model provider receives data, and what limits apply | A provider may be involved in generating replies even when the app is the service you use |
| Training controls | Whether personal data may be used to train or improve models, and the scope of any opt-out | A training choice does not by itself answer what is stored or processed for other purposes |
| Retention and deletion | Retention periods by data category, what account deletion covers, and any exceptions | Different records can have different retention periods |
Read the exact scope, not just the headline
Look for the categories of data named in the policy and the purposes attached to them. A policy may treat profile information differently from messages, preferences, or financial records. Likewise, “we do not use chats for advertising” would answer a different question from whether chats are stored, sent to a model provider, or used for model training.
If the policy uses broad wording, do not silently interpret it as a stronger promise. Note what it expressly says and what it does not establish. The available policies and notices discussed below are service disclosures; they do not independently verify day-to-day data handling.
What happens to your chats?
Your messages may be processed to generate replies, and they may be only one part of the information associated with an account. For example, Replika says conversation data is sent to third-party model providers to generate responses, subject to contractual limits that include not using the data to train those providers’ own models.

That statement is specific to Replika’s described data flow and provider contract limits. It should not be generalized to other services or read as a claim that no processing occurs. When you review another app, look for whether it names outside model providers, what information they receive, and what the provider is permitted to do with it.
Keep different kinds of processing separate
- Response generation: Data may be processed so the app can produce a reply.
- Model training or improvement: This concerns whether data is used to train or improve models, subject to the service’s disclosed terms and controls.
- Marketing or advertising: This is a separate purpose from generating replies or training models.
- Storage and retention: Data can remain stored for a period even when it is not being used for one of the purposes above.
One answer does not settle the others. For instance, a statement that conversation content is not used for marketing does not tell you whether it is retained or processed by a model provider. Replika says its conversation content is not used for marketing or advertising; its policy also describes other processing and retention practices separately.
Does an AI training opt-out mean my chats are private or deleted?
No. A training opt-out addresses a particular use of data; it is not automatically a promise to delete chat history, prevent response-generation processing, or stop all other handling. Check the control’s precise wording and the policy that explains its scope.
Character.AI’s July 2026 update says users can opt out of their personal data being used to train and improve its models. That describes a training-and-improvement choice. It does not, on its own, establish whether conversations are stored, whether data is processed for core service functions, or how deletion works. Consult the applicable policy and regional disclosure for those details.

Questions to answer before relying on a control
- Does the control cover personal data generally, chat content specifically, or a narrower category?
- Does the notice say the setting applies to training, improvement, or both?
- Is the control available in your region and for your account type?
- Does changing the setting affect future use only, or does the service explain what happens to previously processed data?
- Where is the separate process for deleting conversations or closing an account?
If the policy does not answer one of these questions, do not infer the answer from the presence of a toggle. A privacy control is useful only when its stated purpose and limits match your expectation.
How long are AI companion conversations kept, and what does deletion cover?
Retention periods can vary by data category and purpose, so avoid treating a single number as the lifespan of all account data. Replika’s policy says profile information, messages and content, interests, and preferences may be processed for up to 60 days after contract termination for contract-based purposes; it separately says some account and financial records are retained for at least 10 years.

Those statements distinguish categories and purposes. “Up to 60 days” does not mean that all data is deleted after 60 days, and the separate period for certain account and financial records is not a description of every record. Before deleting an account, read the service’s current explanation of what deletion removes, what may remain, and why.
Check these details in the deletion and retention terms
- Whether deleting a conversation differs from deleting the account.
- Which data categories have their own retention periods.
- Whether the policy describes processing after contract termination and the purpose for it.
- Whether some records are kept for a separate period.
- Whether a deletion action is described as immediate, scheduled, or subject to exceptions.
Do not assume a visible “delete” action has a wider effect than its own description. If the policy distinguishes chat history, account data, and records retained for other purposes, evaluate each separately.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How should I think about age limits and mature content?
Check the specific app’s minimum-age and content rules before creating an account. One service’s age limit or content policy does not tell you what another service allows.
Replika says its service is not intended for people under 18. The eSafety Commissioner lists Nomi.AI as 18+ and says it permits conversations that can include sexual and violent themes. These are distinct examples from different sources, not a universal rule for companion apps.
For your own decision, look for both the stated age threshold and the kinds of interactions the service permits. An 18+ listing does not, by itself, explain every content boundary, and a content policy should not be assumed to match another app’s. If an app is for an adult, check that its rules suit the experience you want; if you are evaluating an app for someone else, do not substitute your own assumptions for its published eligibility rules.
What should I avoid sharing in an AI companion chat?
Share less than you would with a trusted person, especially when you do not understand the service’s data flow. Replika advises users not to share sensitive personal information and says sensitive content included in chats may be processed by third-party providers for core functionality.

That is a practical reminder that the emotional or conversational style of an app does not change its disclosed processing. Consider whether a message includes a real name, home or work location, contact information, financial details, medical information, or private information about another person. If the detail is not necessary to the conversation, leave it out or make the scenario fictional.
A quick disclosure check before sending
- Could this message identify me or another person?
- Does it include information I would not want processed outside the app?
- Can I ask the same question without including the sensitive detail?
- Have I checked the service’s current policy for messages and outside providers?
This is a risk-reduction habit, not a guarantee that a message will be deleted or never processed. Use the service’s policy to understand the terms, and avoid entering details you are not comfortable sharing under those terms.
How do I compare the available examples?
The documented examples below illustrate why one broad “privacy” rating would be misleading: they cover different kinds of evidence and different policy questions. They are not a complete shortlist or an independent ranking.
| Service or source | What the cited material establishes | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Replika | Not intended for people under 18; conversation data sent to third-party model providers for response generation under contractual limits including no use to train those providers’ own models; category-specific retention statements | These are service-policy statements. The 60-day and 10-year periods apply to different categories and purposes |
| Character.AI | Its July 2026 update says users can opt out of personal data being used to train and improve its models | The notice concerns a training and improvement control; review the applicable policy for storage, other processing, and regional scope |
| Nomi.AI, as described by Australia’s eSafety Commissioner | 18+ listing; relationship choices include friendship, romance, mentor, and custom; persona traits and backstory; conversations may include sexual and violent themes | This is a regulator guide’s description of the service, not a comparison of its privacy practices with the other examples |
There is no reliable overall winner to infer from those facts alone. The examples do not establish comparable prices, a complete app selection, or independent audits of provider practices. Compare the current disclosures for the exact app and region you plan to use.
Does a survey about teen AI companionship tell me which app to choose?
No. Survey results describe the surveyed group; they do not establish adult use, identify a safest app, or prove that a particular service is safe or unsafe.
Axios’s July 16, 2025 summary of Common Sense Media findings says 72% of surveyed U.S. teens said they used AI for companionship. The survey was conducted in April and May 2025 and included 1,060 respondents aged 13–17. Axios also reports that 34% of teen AI-companion users said they had felt uncomfortable with something a bot said or did. These are findings attributed to Common Sense Media through Axios’s news summary, not an app-by-app safety assessment.

How do I make a final choice?
Use a short, repeatable review rather than choosing on the strength of a single feature or broad privacy label. If an app does not meet a non-negotiable age, content, or privacy requirement, remove it from consideration before weighing personalization or convenience.
- Write your use case. Name the interaction you want and the features that matter: for instance, role-play, friendly conversation, mentoring, romance, or a customizable persona.
- Confirm eligibility and boundaries. Read the app’s own age and content rules. Do not transfer rules from another service.
- Trace the data flow. Note the data categories, whether messages are used to generate replies, and whether outside model providers receive data.
- Separate training from other uses. Find any training or improvement control and record exactly what the service says it covers. Treat storage, response generation, marketing, and deletion as separate questions.
- Check retention and deletion. Look for category-specific periods, account-closure terms, and any separately retained records.
- Decide what you will not disclose. Apply the policy to your own boundaries and avoid adding sensitive details that are not needed.
- Check the current offer. If paid features matter to your choice, verify the app’s current plan and price directly; the available examples do not establish a comparable cross-app price list.
Keep the date of your review with your notes, especially for privacy controls and pricing. If the service changes its policy or interface, repeat the relevant checks rather than assuming the previous answer still applies.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI companion app replace therapy or crisis support?
The cited disclosures do not establish that any of these services is a clinical or crisis-care provider. If you need professional mental-health care or urgent help, use qualified local services rather than assuming a conversational app can provide it.
Does using an AI companion app anonymously mean my chats cannot be linked to me?
The cited policy material does not establish that anonymous use prevents data from being associated with an account or other information. Check whether the service requires an account and how its policy describes profile and conversation data before relying on anonymity.
Are AI companion apps independently audited for privacy?
The policy examples here are vendor statements and a regulator’s service guide, not independent audits of actual data handling. A published policy explains stated terms but should not be treated as proof that an outside reviewer tested compliance.
Are AI companion apps free, or do they charge for specific features?
The cited material does not provide current, comparable prices or establish which features are included in any app’s paid tier. Check each service’s current offer directly, and compare the feature you need rather than assuming plans are equivalent.
