Choose by the kind of control you need. HeyGen is the clearest choice when you want to describe expressions, gestures, and gaze with prompts or presets. D-ID is better when your workflow needs named sentiments such as “Empathetic” or “Frustrated” through an API. Synthesia is designed for structured business video, where speech, script emphasis, and an expressive source recording drive the avatar. Runway is the strongest fit when you can demonstrate the performance in a reference video and want to transfer that facial and body movement to a character.

These are different control models, not interchangeable “emotion sliders.” The right choice depends on whether you can supply text, emotional labels, expressive audio, webcam footage, or a reference performance—and whether you need a rendered video or a live interaction.

What should you compare before choosing an expressive AI avatar tool?

Start with the control input, then check how precisely the system follows it. A tool may let you name an emotion without letting you time a glance, or it may produce convincing motion only when you provide a performer’s video. The table below separates those workflows.

Tool Primary control input What you can direct Source material Workflow and documented limits
HeyGen Free-text motion prompts and Avatar V preset tabs Expression, gesture, gaze, and timed reactions Avatar selection; uploaded video footage for compatible hyper-realistic avatars; expressive audio and optional motion-reference video improve results Avatar IV custom motion is documented for segments up to 10 seconds; longer scenes may loop or hold. Avatar V prioritizes audio, then input-image expression, then the prompt.
D-ID Named sentiment_id values Overall emotional delivery tied to a configured voice Avatar and voice configuration; exact additional capture requirements are not stated in the cited quickstart V4 Expressive Avatar generation is asynchronous and typically takes 1–5 minutes depending on video length. Expression control is available through the /talks API, not through Agents.
Synthesia Spoken content, script pacing, emphasis, and source performance Speech-driven lip sync and facial expression; body language is generally neutral for personal avatars Photo or webcam recording; a more expressive source recording can improve the resulting avatar Interactive Avatars stream synchronously in real time. Video API rendering is asynchronous. The cited documentation exposes fewer manual expression controls than the other workflows.
Runway Reference-performance video Facial expressions and body movements demonstrated by the performer A reference video showing the desired performance The documented endpoint is POST /v1/character_performance, using model act_two and API version 2024-11-06.

There is no neutral, cross-vendor realism score in the documented material. Treat the controls and constraints above as product capabilities, not as a ranking of animation quality.

How does HeyGen give you control over expressions, gestures, and gaze?

HeyGen offers the broadest documented combination of manual controls. Avatar V separates presets into Expression, Gesture, and Gaze categories, while Avatar IV accepts a short free-text motion prompt. This makes HeyGen the most direct fit when you want to specify a visible action instead of merely choosing a voice or a general mood.

Use Avatar V presets for repeatable directions

Avatar V’s examples include calm, enthusiastic, serious, warm, confident, sincere, sad, and intense facial expressions. Gaze presets can direct the avatar to look at the camera or away from it, and gesture controls add hand movement, posture changes, body language, and timed reactions. Presets are useful when several videos need the same style because a named option is easier to reproduce than an improvised paragraph.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Avatar IV prompts for a single visible movement

Avatar IV accepts free-text motion prompts. Keep each prompt short and focus on one observable action, such as a brief smile, a concerned brow movement, or a glance away before returning to the viewer. Custom motion generation is documented for a maximum of 10 seconds; after that, a longer scene may loop or hold the last motion. Split a long presentation into short motion segments when a change in expression must happen at a precise point.

Record gesture-ready footage when creating a compatible avatar

HeyGen’s Gesture Control guide applies to hyper-realistic avatars created from uploaded video footage. The recommended capture pattern is a neutral first 30 seconds, followed by one gesture about every two seconds, with a return to neutral after each gesture. The guide says up to 10 gestures may be captured, although that limit can change. This recording pattern gives the system clear transitions instead of a continuous sequence that is difficult to segment.

Fix a static result by checking input priority

HeyGen documents this priority order for Avatar V: audio first, input-image expression second, and prompt third. A prompt asking for enthusiasm will not reliably overcome flat audio or a neutral source image. Use expressive speech, choose a source image with the intended baseline expression, and add a motion-reference video when the scene needs more than a subtle facial change.

A practical HeyGen workflow

  1. Select Avatar V when you need separate expression, gesture, and gaze presets, or select Avatar IV when a short text instruction is the fastest way to define motion.
  2. Write one concise movement per prompt or choose one preset category at a time. Avoid combining several emotions, gaze changes, and gestures in one sentence.
  3. Prepare expressive audio that matches the intended delivery. Mark pauses and emphasis in the script before generating the clip.
  4. For a custom avatar, record the neutral opening, space gestures roughly two seconds apart, and return to neutral after each one.
  5. Render a short test segment first. If the face remains static, revise the audio and source image before adding more elaborate prompts.
  6. Keep custom-motion scenes within 10 seconds or divide the performance into separate segments so looping or holding does not occur at an unwanted moment.

How does D-ID’s sentiment control differ from expression prompts?

D-ID’s V4 Expressive Avatars use named sentiment states rather than a free-form list of facial movements. In the documented quickstart, the sentiment_id examples are Professional, Empathetic, Excited, Friendly, and Frustrated. The selected sentiment determines the avatar’s expressive delivery and the configured voice, making this workflow useful when an application needs a consistent emotional category.

Choose D-ID when an API sentiment is easier to maintain

A sentiment identifier can be stored with a script, selected from application logic, and reused across generated videos. That is simpler to govern than allowing every author to invent a different prompt for “reassuring” or “serious.” It is also less granular: a named sentiment does not document a separate control for the exact timing of a brow raise, eye movement, or hand gesture.

Understand the product boundary before building

D-ID’s help documentation states that facial-expression control is currently available through the /talks API and not through Agents. Do not assume that an Agent workflow exposes the same sentiment controls as an API-generated talk. Confirm the product mode and endpoint during implementation.

Plan for asynchronous generation

The V4 Expressive Avatar quickstart describes an asynchronous request that returns a generated video after processing. Typical generation time is 1–5 minutes, depending on video length. That is suitable for queued content production but not equivalent to a live, frame-by-frame conversation.

What changed in Studio?

D-ID announced that V4 Expressive Avatars became available in Studio on 4 February 2026, in addition to API access. Availability and interface labels can change, so verify the current Studio workflow before documenting a production procedure for a team.

What expression control does Synthesia provide?

Synthesia’s documented personal-avatar workflow is speech-driven. Lip sync and facial expressions are generated from the spoken content, while body language is neutral and designed around script pacing and emphasis. This is a good fit when you want a polished business presenter without manually directing every facial movement, but it provides fewer explicit expression controls than prompt-, sentiment-, or performance-based systems.

Make the script carry the emotion

Because the spoken content drives facial expression, punctuation, pauses, emphasis, and sentence length matter. A reassuring explanation and an urgent warning should not be written with identical rhythm. Scene framing also affects perceived expressiveness, so a close presenter shot will reveal subtle changes more clearly than a distant composition.

Use an expressive source recording for a personal avatar

Synthesia supports personal-avatar creation from a webcam recording. Its documentation says that the more expressive the source recording, the better the resulting avatar can be. Record in a quiet, evenly lit space with a clear view of the face, and perform the emotional range you expect to use rather than delivering every line in a flat voice.

Choose the API family that matches the output

Synthesia documents four API families:

  • Interactive Avatars: synchronous, streaming rendering for real-time conversations.
  • Video API: asynchronous generation of finished video files.
  • Upload API: asset-upload workflows.
  • Billing API: billing-related operations.

Only the first two determine how quickly a viewer sees the avatar. A real-time Interactive Avatar is a different engineering choice from submitting a script and waiting for a completed Video API file.

When is Runway’s reference-performance workflow the better choice?

Runway is the strongest option when the desired expression is easier to demonstrate than to describe. Its documented POST /v1/character_performance endpoint transfers facial expressions and body movements from a reference video to a character. The endpoint specifies model act_two and API version 2024-11-06.

Use a performance when timing matters

A reference performer naturally supplies timing, eye direction, pauses, posture, and transitions between emotions. This can be more predictable for a dramatic scene, a product reaction, or a character who must repeat a choreographed delivery. The trade-off is that you must record or obtain suitable reference footage; a text-only workflow is not the intended control method.

Prepare the reference video deliberately

  • Keep the performer’s face visible and avoid cuts that make the intended expression ambiguous.
  • Include the complete movement, including the neutral position before and after the reaction.
  • Match the general framing and body orientation you expect in the output.
  • Record the expression at the intensity you actually want transferred; exaggerating a performance can produce an exaggerated result.

The endpoint documentation does not establish a universal duration, resolution, or success rate. Treat those details as implementation parameters to verify in the current API documentation.

Do you need a webcam, expressive audio, or reference footage?

Your source requirement follows the control model. Text prompts and sentiment IDs can start from an existing avatar configuration, while personal-avatar and performance-transfer workflows need recorded material.

When a webcam is useful

A webcam is relevant when creating a personal avatar that learns from your face and delivery, particularly in Synthesia’s documented workflow. A clear USB webcam can be a capture aid, but no particular webcam guarantees more expressive output. Lighting, framing, a clean background, and the performance you record remain important.

When expressive audio is essential

HeyGen’s Avatar V prioritizes audio before the input-image expression and prompt. If the speech is monotone, a text instruction for enthusiasm may have little effect. Record or synthesize audio with audible emphasis, pauses, and changes in intensity that support the intended facial delivery.

When you need a motion-reference video

Use a reference video when the exact performance matters more than a verbal description. HeyGen recommends motion-reference video as a troubleshooting aid for Avatar V, and Runway’s character-performance endpoint is explicitly built around reference footage.

When no extra recording is necessary

D-ID’s sentiment workflow is designed around a selected sentiment, avatar, and configured voice. The cited quickstart does not state an additional webcam or performance-video requirement. That makes it convenient for applications that need a consistent emotional label rather than a bespoke gesture sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can you test expression control before committing to a production workflow?

Run the same short script through the control method you are considering, then inspect whether the result is controllable rather than merely attractive. A 20–30 second test exposes timing, audio, source-quality, and API-mode problems before a full project is built.

  1. Write a three-beat script. Include a neutral opening, one emotional change, and a return to neutral. This tests both the transition and the recovery.
  2. Define the required signal. For a prompt tool, write one visible movement. For a sentiment API, select one named state. For a speech-driven avatar, revise pacing and emphasis. For a performance-transfer tool, record the complete action.
  3. Check timing. Note when the expression begins, peaks, and ends. A tool that produces the right emotion at the wrong sentence may not meet your use case.
  4. Check repeatability. Generate the same clip again or repeat the same preset. Consistent emotional delivery matters more for training, support, and brand communication than a single impressive result.
  5. Check the failure behavior. Look for a loop, a held pose, a return to a neutral face, or an expression overridden by audio. Document what happens so editors can design around it.
  6. Check the delivery mode. Confirm whether your application can tolerate asynchronous rendering or needs a streaming interactive avatar.

Do not turn this into a universal realism score. The available documentation describes controls and workflows, not an independent cross-vendor benchmark.

Which tool fits common expression-control use cases?

Match the tool to the way your team can express intent, not to the number of emotion words in a marketing page.

Marketing and social clips with directed reactions

Choose HeyGen when you need a presenter to look at the camera, glance away, smile, or change posture on command. Avatar V presets are easier to repeat across a series, while Avatar IV prompts are useful for short custom movements.

Support, education, or announcements with named emotional states

Choose D-ID when your application can map a message to a controlled sentiment such as Professional, Friendly, or Empathetic. Keep the implementation on the documented /talks API if facial-expression control is required; Agents do not expose that feature according to D-ID’s help page.

Structured business video with a presenter identity

Choose Synthesia when script-driven production, personal avatars, and business-video APIs matter more than hand-authored gestures. Put emotional direction into the spoken script and source recording, and use Interactive Avatars only when the experience must stream in real time.

Creative work that depends on a specific performance

Choose Runway when a performer can show the exact face and body movement you want transferred. This avoids trying to describe nuanced timing in text, but it adds the preparation and rights-management requirements of reference footage.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

What are the most common failure modes, and how do you fix them?

The avatar looks static despite an emotional prompt

First inspect the audio and source image. In HeyGen’s documented priority order, both override the prompt. Re-record with audible emphasis, use a source image whose expression matches the baseline, and add a motion-reference video if the change is substantial.

A long custom motion repeats or freezes

HeyGen documents a 10-second maximum for Avatar IV custom motion. Break the scene into shorter segments, or let the avatar return to neutral before starting the next movement.

The sentiment label does not work in the chosen D-ID product

Verify that the request uses the /talks API. D-ID states that facial-expression control is not available in Agents, so changing the sentiment field inside an Agent workflow will not provide the same result.

The personal avatar sounds right but shows little body language

This is expected in Synthesia’s documented personal-avatar model: facial expression and lip sync follow spoken content, while body language is neutral and tied to script pacing. Improve the source recording and script emphasis rather than expecting a manual gesture editor that the cited documentation does not describe.

The transferred performance feels unlike the reference

Review the reference video for clear framing, an uninterrupted action, and a neutral start and finish. If the performance is subtle or partially hidden, the system has less visible information to transfer. Record a clean, deliberate take instead of relying on a cropped or heavily edited clip.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The result is unsuitable for live interaction

Check the rendering mode before changing expression settings. D-ID’s documented V4 generation is asynchronous, and Synthesia’s Video API is asynchronous; use a streaming Interactive Avatar workflow when the application requires a response during the conversation.

What privacy and consent checks belong in an avatar project?

Obtain informed consent from anyone whose face, voice, or performance is recorded for an avatar or reference video. Explain where the material will be stored, who can generate videos, how long the assets will be retained, and how to revoke access. Follow the selected vendor’s current identity, voice, and acceptable-use policies; the product documentation describes technical workflows, not a complete legal or ethical framework.

For a team, keep the source recording, avatar configuration, sentiment or prompt settings, and generated output under controlled access. Record the model and API version used for production so a later change in behavior can be traced. Recheck volatile model names, limits, interface labels, and API requirements before publishing a technical implementation guide or shipping a customer-facing feature.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change an avatar’s expression in the middle of a sentence?

Yes, but the method differs. A prompt or preset workflow can divide the delivery into timed motion segments, while a sentiment workflow generally applies an overall emotional state to the generated talk. For the most exact mid-sentence timing, a reference performance gives the system an explicit transition to follow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is an expressive webcam recording required for every AI avatar?

No. Named-sentiment and text-prompt workflows can start from an avatar and voice configuration without a personal recording. A webcam becomes important when you are creating a personal avatar whose facial behavior is learned from your own source performance.

How long should I wait for an expressive avatar video?

The documented D-ID V4 Expressive Avatar workflow typically takes 1–5 minutes, depending on video length. HeyGen’s 10-second figure is a motion-segment limit, not a promise about total rendering time, and streaming products follow a different latency model.

Can one avatar tool support both live conversations and finished videos?

Some platforms expose separate products or APIs for those jobs. Synthesia documents Interactive Avatars for synchronous streaming and a Video API for asynchronous finished files; do not assume that settings or expression controls from one mode are available in the other.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
