Choose a Salesforce AI assistant by matching its billing meter and integration model to the work you need it to do. Salesforce currently offers a free Foundations entry point, usage-priced Flex Credits and conversations, several per-user licenses, and higher-tier editions. Agentforce runs inside Salesforce’s Einstein Trust Layer, where standard access controls apply and Salesforce says third-party large language models receive zero data retention for training. Native Salesforce assets can shorten implementation, while MuleSoft becomes important when an agent must read or write to ERP, finance, legacy, or on-premises systems. The practical decision is therefore not simply “which chatbot is best?” It is which combination of audience, workload, permissions, data sources, channels, and governance gives you a predictable cost and a safe path to production.
What should you decide before comparing Salesforce AI prices?
Start with the work, not the product name. Write down who will use the assistant, how often it will be invoked, what a successful interaction must accomplish, and which systems contain the required data. A customer-facing service agent, an employee assistant in Slack, a voice agent, and an agent that updates an ERP have different entitlements and cost drivers.

Use this short definition of scope:
- Audience: customers, service representatives, sales users, partners, or a mixed population.
- Interaction pattern: occasional questions, high-volume conversations, discrete actions, voice calls, or background workflow.
- Action risk: read-only answers, record creation, financial changes, order cancellation, or other irreversible operations.
- Data location: Salesforce objects, documents, Slack, websites, Data 360, or external and on-premises applications.
- Controls: field-level permissions, audit trails, retention terms, regional processing, and human approval requirements.
This inventory lets you compare a per-user commitment with consumption pricing using your own volumes instead of a generic “cost per AI” claim.
What does Agentforce cost in 2026?
Salesforce publishes a mix of free entry, per-conversation, per-action credits, add-ons, and per-user licenses. The figures below are public list prices described by Salesforce for 2026; packaging and prices can change, so obtain an edition-specific quote before signing.

| Option | Published price | What the meter or entitlement represents | Best comparison question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Salesforce Foundations | $0 | A free starting point positioned to provide Agentforce capabilities. | Does the included capability cover a controlled pilot, or will production volume require an add-on? |
| Flex Credits | $500 per 100,000 credits | Consumption pricing for Agentforce actions. Salesforce says one standard action uses 20 credits and one Agentforce Voice action uses 30 credits. | How many actions will the target workload generate, and how variable is that demand? |
| Conversations | $2 per conversation | Usage pricing based on conversations rather than individual employee seats. | Can you define a conversation consistently across your channels and estimate monthly volume? |
| Agentforce add-on | $125 per user/month | A per-user Agentforce add-on whose exact entitlements depend on the Salesforce edition and order form. | Are the named users stable enough that a seat commitment is easier to budget than usage? |
| Industries add-on | $150 per user/month | A per-user add-on for industry packaging. | Do the included industry capabilities replace custom work you would otherwise build? |
| Max Edition | From $550 per user/month | A higher-tier edition with Agentforce-related capabilities; “from” indicates the starting list price, not a universal total. | Will the broader edition reduce separate licenses, integration work, or governance overhead? |
| Agentforce User License | $5 per user/month | A low-cost per-user license listed separately from the larger add-ons. | What functions and limits are included for the specific user type in your quote? |
| Agentforce Coworker | $50 per user/month | A per-user employee-assistant offering. | Is the intended audience internal coworkers, and does the channel mix fit that entitlement? |
Do not add these prices together automatically. They are different packaging choices, and a quote may combine Salesforce edition, add-ons, consumption, channels, implementation services, and integration products. Ask the representative to identify which meter applies to each agent, which users are licensed, and whether unused credits or conversation capacity expires or rolls over.
How do Flex Credits, conversations, and per-user licenses compare?
The main trade-off is predictability versus elasticity. Per-user licenses are easier to forecast when the employee population is stable. Flex Credits and conversations follow actual use, which can be economical for seasonal or customer-driven demand but requires reliable volume measurement.

Flex Credit math
At the published rate of $500 for 100,000 credits, one credit costs $0.005. Using Salesforce’s stated consumption figures, a 20-credit standard action has a list-price equivalent of $0.10, and a 30-credit voice action has a list-price equivalent of $0.15. These are arithmetic conversions of the published bundle, not a promise that every workflow will contain exactly one billable action or that taxes, discounts, minimums, or other entitlements are absent.
For example, a workload of 40,000 standard actions would consume 800,000 credits (40,000 × 20). At the published bundle rate, that is eight bundles, or $4,000 before any negotiated terms. A workload with 10,000 standard actions and 5,000 voice actions would consume 350,000 credits (200,000 + 150,000), equivalent to $1,750 at the same simple rate. Use the Digital Wallet to observe actual consumption rather than relying solely on a design estimate.
Conversation pricing
At $2 per conversation, 5,000 billable conversations would equal $10,000 at list price. The critical question is how Salesforce defines a conversation for your channel and contract: a long session with many turns may have a different cost profile from several short sessions. Have the quote spell out included channels, resets, handoffs, and any minimum commitment.

Per-user pricing
A $5 User License, a $50 Coworker license, a $125 Agentforce add-on, a $150 Industries add-on, and Max Edition from $550 per user/month are not interchangeable labels. They can target different audiences and capabilities. Multiply the quoted monthly seat price by the number of entitled users, then add any usage meter that remains in the order. A seat model can be the safer budget choice when every representative uses the assistant daily; it can be wasteful when only a small group needs it or demand changes sharply.

A practical meter-selection test
- Estimate monthly active users and their peak-season variation.
- Estimate conversations, standard actions, voice actions, and automated background actions separately.
- Price the same workload under the eligible per-user, conversation, and Flex Credit options.
- Add the cost of required channels, Data 360, MuleSoft, implementation, monitoring, and human review.
- Stress-test the result at two or three times expected volume and document who pays for overage.
Choose the meter that remains understandable when usage changes. A low nominal unit price is not useful if you cannot measure the unit or control its growth.
Is Agentforce secure, and does it train on your Salesforce data?
Salesforce says Agentforce is integrated with the Einstein Trust Layer, respects standard Salesforce access controls, and uses a zero-data-retention policy so third-party large language models do not store or use the data for model training. That is a platform-level statement, not a substitute for checking your organization’s configuration, order form, subprocessors, and regional processing terms.
What the Trust Layer statement covers
- Agent actions operate through the Trust Layer rather than bypassing Salesforce’s normal authorization model.
- Standard Salesforce access controls remain relevant to the objects, records, and fields an agent can retrieve or change.
- Salesforce’s stated zero-retention policy means third-party LLM providers do not retain the submitted data or use it to train their models under that arrangement.
Why “Salesforce data” is not one single category
Salesforce distinguishes standard agent actions from other Einstein features. Some other Einstein capabilities may use aggregated, anonymous global models. Salesforce says those global models do not apply to Agentforce platform and agent actions unless you add another feature to the agent. Your architecture and enabled features therefore matter: document exactly which action, model provider, grounding source, and downstream service is in scope.
Controls to verify before production
- Edition and license: confirm the Salesforce edition, Agentforce entitlement, channel rights, and any Data 360 or industry add-on.
- Object and field permissions: test least-privilege profiles, permission sets, sharing rules, row-level access, and restricted fields with representative users.
- Grounding sources: list every object, file store, knowledge base, Slack surface, website, or external system the agent can search.
- Action approvals: require confirmation or human handoff for refunds, cancellations, financial changes, identity changes, and other high-impact operations.
- Retention and audit: establish how prompts, responses, traces, conversation transcripts, and action logs are retained and who can export them.
- Subprocessors and geography: review the contract’s subprocessors, data-processing addendum, residency commitments, and cross-border transfer terms.
- Testing: probe prompt injection, unauthorized record access, data leakage through summaries, and unsafe tool calls in a sandbox.
Ask for written answers tied to your exact deployment. A general Trust Layer description cannot answer whether a custom connector, an added Einstein feature, or a particular regional configuration changes the data path.

Which Salesforce channels and native assets can Agentforce use?
Agentforce is positioned as native to Salesforce Platform. Salesforce says administrators can reuse flows, prompt templates, Apex, and APIs as agent actions, reducing the need to rebuild logic in a separate bot platform.
Native building blocks
- Flows: expose governed, repeatable business processes as actions.
- Prompt templates: standardize instructions and required context.
- Apex and APIs: call validated business logic where a flow is insufficient.
- CRM records: ground answers and execute changes under Salesforce permissions.
- Data 360: unify structured and unstructured data and support retrieval-augmented generation and vector retrieval for context.
Data 360 is particularly useful when the answer depends on multiple data domains or unstructured content. It is not automatically required for every Salesforce-only assistant; verify whether your edition and use case need it.
Interaction surfaces
Salesforce identifies Slack, WhatsApp, Messenger, websites, CRM interfaces, and voice as possible interaction or context surfaces. Treat each channel as a separate design and cost question: authentication, consent, transcript retention, handoff behavior, language coverage, and the applicable conversation or action meter must be confirmed for the channel you select.
Do you need MuleSoft to connect Agentforce to an ERP or other external system?
You do not need MuleSoft merely because an assistant exists outside a Salesforce record. You should evaluate MuleSoft when the agent must securely retrieve data from or execute transactions in ERP, finance, service, legacy, or on-premises systems and you need reusable APIs, connectors, governance, and observability.
| Requirement | Likely approach | Key question |
|---|---|---|
| Read or update Salesforce records only | Native Agentforce actions using flows, Apex, APIs, and CRM permissions. | Can the existing Salesforce logic enforce all required validation and approvals? |
| Occasional read-only data from one simple SaaS system | A governed custom connection or API integration may be sufficient. | Who owns authentication, rate limits, schema changes, and monitoring? |
| Multiple SaaS, ERP, finance, or service systems | Evaluate MuleSoft APIs and connectors, or an equivalent integration layer already approved by your organization. | Can one managed API layer provide consistent security and error handling? |
| Legacy or on-premises systems | Use an integration architecture that can reach private networks without exposing systems directly to the agent. | How will network isolation, credentials, retries, and audit evidence work? |
| High-impact transactions | Protected APIs with explicit approvals, idempotency, logging, and rollback procedures. | What prevents a duplicate or unauthorized write? |
Salesforce describes MuleSoft for Agentforce as using APIs and connectors to unlock external data, execute actions in systems of record, and govern interactions through protected APIs. That makes MuleSoft a fit question about system complexity and control, not a mandatory prerequisite for every deployment.

Integration questions to answer in design
- Is the external operation read-only, or can it create, update, cancel, or pay?
- Does the API support scoped credentials and a service account with least privilege?
- What happens when the external system is unavailable or returns a partial failure?
- Can the agent safely retry, or could a retry duplicate an order or payment?
- Are external identifiers, currency, time zone, and data-quality rules normalized before the model sees them?
- Can administrators trace the user request, agent decision, API call, response, and resulting record change?
What is AgentExchange, and when should you use a marketplace solution?
AgentExchange combines AppExchange, Slack Marketplace, and the broader Agentforce ecosystem. A Salesforce Help page dated June 17, 2026 lists more than 13,000 solutions and discovery inside Agentforce Builder and Slack, with MCP connectivity to more than 6,000 AgentX apps. A March 4, 2025 launch announcement reported more than 200 partners and described packaged actions such as creating a case, canceling an order, updating a Slack canvas, searching Slack, and sending direct messages.
Those counts are time-sensitive marketplace figures, not a guarantee that every listing remains available or suitable. Use a packaged solution when its security review, permissions, support model, version compatibility, and commercial terms are better than building and maintaining the same workflow yourself.
Marketplace due diligence
- Check the listing’s security review status and the exact data scopes it requests.
- Identify whether the package installs flows, Apex, connected apps, custom objects, or external endpoints.
- Confirm who supports failures and how quickly compatibility updates arrive after Salesforce releases.
- Review whether data leaves your region and whether the provider’s retention terms match your policy.
- Test upgrade, uninstall, rollback, and license-expiration behavior in a sandbox.
- Compare the package’s recurring fee and implementation effort with an internally built action.
How should a team implement and test a Salesforce AI assistant?
Use a staged implementation that makes permissions and cost visible before expanding the audience.

Developer and operations surfaces
Salesforce lists an Agent API, Custom Connections, Agentforce Mobile SDK, Enhanced Chat, Agentforce DX, an Agentforce Python SDK, testing APIs, and session-trace export. These surfaces matter when you need CI/CD, mobile embedding, automated regression tests, or centralized observability rather than a single configured chat window.
Salesforce documentation says that beginning in April 2026, “topics” are called “subagents,” with no functionality change. Update internal runbooks and training materials so administrators can find the current label without treating the rename as a migration.

What are the most common buying mistakes?
- Comparing unit prices without matching units. A conversation, an action, a voice action, and a licensed user measure different things.
- Assuming the cheapest license includes every channel. Confirm entitlement for Slack, voice, websites, WhatsApp, Messenger, mobile, and external actions.
- Treating “zero retention” as a complete security review. Check added features, custom connectors, logs, regional terms, and your own retention settings.
- Giving an agent broad permissions for convenience. Use least privilege, separate read and write actions, and require confirmation for consequential changes.
- Connecting an ERP directly to a model. Put validation, authentication, rate limiting, auditability, and error handling in a governed API layer.
- Skipping volume instrumentation. Without Digital Wallet data and channel-level counts, a consumption bill can surprise you.
- Buying a marketplace package without lifecycle testing. Verify upgrades, uninstall behavior, support, and compatibility in a sandbox.
- Measuring only answer quality. Include permission violations, unsafe actions, human handoffs, latency, external-system failures, and total operating cost.
Which Salesforce AI assistant approach fits your situation?
| Your situation | Starting approach | What to validate next |
|---|---|---|
| Small internal pilot with Salesforce-only data | Start with Salesforce Foundations and a narrow read-oriented workflow. | Included entitlements, user permissions, action limits, and pilot-to-production pricing. |
| Stable employee population using the assistant every day | Compare the relevant per-user license or add-on with expected consumption. | Seat eligibility, channel rights, overage treatment, and total cost per active user. |
| Seasonal customer demand or unpredictable traffic | Model Conversations or Flex Credits against peak volume. | Conversation definition, credit monitoring, capacity, and surge controls. |
| Voice-heavy service operation | Include the 30-credit voice-action rate in the workload model. | Voice entitlements, transcript retention, handoff quality, and peak concurrency. |
| Answers require unified structured and unstructured data | Evaluate Data 360 for grounding, retrieval-augmented generation, and vector retrieval. | Data quality, indexing scope, permissions, residency, and refresh latency. |
| Agent must transact across ERP, finance, legacy, or on-premises systems | Design protected APIs and evaluate MuleSoft for Agentforce connectors and governance. | Authentication, idempotency, rollback, monitoring, network isolation, and support ownership. |
| Fast delivery of a known industry or Slack workflow | Check AgentExchange for a vetted packaged action or connector. | Security review, scopes, version support, commercial terms, and exit plan. |
The strongest business case usually comes from a small workflow with a measurable baseline, least-privilege permissions, and a cost meter you can observe. Expand only after the pilot demonstrates safe behavior and a predictable operating model.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I start Agentforce without buying a full Salesforce edition upgrade?
Salesforce lists Foundations at $0 as an entry point, but the capabilities, limits, channels, and path to production depend on your existing edition and order terms. Ask for a written transition plan from the free starting configuration to the licenses and usage meters your pilot would require.
Where can administrators see Agentforce consumption?
Salesforce identifies Digital Wallet as the place to view Flex Credit consumption. Use that visibility alongside conversation counts, action traces, and channel reports so finance can reconcile usage with the contracted meter.
Are Agentforce actions the same as Salesforce flows?
No. A flow is an automation asset that can be exposed as an agent action; an action is the governed capability the agent invokes. Reusing flows can reduce build effort, but permissions, inputs, validation, and error handling still need agent-specific testing.
What changed in Salesforce terminology in April 2026?
Salesforce documentation says topics are called subagents beginning in April 2026. The documentation describes this as a naming change with no functionality change, so existing designs should be updated in labels and runbooks rather than rebuilt solely because of the rename.
How should I evaluate an AgentExchange listing that looks ready-made?
Treat it like a software dependency: inspect requested scopes, installed components, security review status, regional processing, support, release compatibility, and uninstall behavior in a sandbox. Compare its recurring commercial terms and maintenance burden with building the action yourself.
