Choose an AI agent security platform by first mapping every agent, model, tool, MCP server, identity, data store and external destination it can reach, then score products on lifecycle coverage, discovery, authorization, runtime inspection, containment, evidence, integrations and operating effort. A convincing demonstration is not enough. Before buying, run a pilot against your own agents and workflows using prompt injection, poisoned retrieval content, unauthorized tool requests, privilege escalation, data exfiltration, memory poisoning, recursive tool use and high-impact approvals.

Agent security is an execution and authorization problem as much as a prompt-filtering problem. The platform must show what exists, limit what each agent can do, inspect both content and proposed actions, stop unsafe operations, and leave evidence that your security and audit teams can review.

What should an AI agent security platform control?

Start with the complete execution chain rather than a model-only view. An agent can receive instructions from users, documents, web pages, repositories, email, APIs and tool responses; decide to call a tool; use credentials; write to memory; and trigger an external side effect. Each handoff is a control point.

OWASP identifies direct and indirect prompt injection, tool abuse and privilege escalation, data exfiltration, and memory poisoning as core risks. Controls should combine minimum-permission tool scopes, explicit allowlists, validation of external content, human approval for high-impact actions, isolation, anomaly detection, structured logging and repeatable adversarial testing.

  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
  • Inputs: user prompts, retrieved documents, web content, code, emails, API responses and tool output must be treated as untrusted.
  • Decisions: the platform should record the model request, policy evaluation and reason for allowing, auditing or blocking an action.
  • Actions: tool calls need per-tool and per-parameter authorization, not a single broad permission.
  • State: agent memory, caches and vector stores need controls against poisoned or unauthorized writes.
  • Effects: outbound messages, transactions, code changes and configuration updates need risk-based approval and a way to revoke access.

The AWS approach is similarly broad: system design, secure development, security evaluation suites, input validation and guardrails, data security and governance, infrastructure security, threat detection and security posture management, and incident response. A product that only filters prompts leaves important parts of this chain uncovered.

How do I map agents, tools and MCP servers before comparing products?

Discovery is the first buying test. You cannot protect or revoke an agent you cannot see, including an experimental or employee-built agent operating outside the official inventory.

  1. Inventory agent types and owners. Record production, development, desktop, cloud, SaaS, workflow and autonomous agents, plus the team responsible for each one.
  2. Record model and hosting paths. Capture model providers, versions, gateways, fine-tuned models, local runtimes and the cloud or endpoint where inference occurs.
  3. Enumerate tools and MCP servers. List every function, connector, plugin, API, shell, browser, database and MCP server, including who can register or modify it.
  4. Map identities and credentials. Tie each agent to a distinct service identity where possible. Note token lifetime, role memberships, secrets, delegated user access and emergency revocation procedures.
  5. Map data and destinations. Identify files, repositories, vector stores, memory, databases, queues and external destinations. Mark regulated or high-value data and irreversible actions.
  6. Look for shadow agents. Compare platform discovery with identity, endpoint, cloud, SaaS and network telemetry. Ask how quickly a newly observed agent appears and how it is attributed.

Ask vendors to demonstrate discovery rather than handing you a marketing inventory. Measure coverage for known and shadow agents, endpoint and cloud deployments, SaaS workflows, MCP traffic and agents that use a model through a custom gateway.

Which lifecycle capabilities should I compare?

Compare products across the entire lifecycle: build-time posture, deployment controls, runtime enforcement and response. A strong runtime sensor cannot compensate for an untracked agent created with excessive permissions.

Lifecycle area Questions to ask Evidence to request
Build-time posture Can the platform scan agent code, prompts, tool definitions, dependencies and MCP configuration before deployment? Findings tied to a commit or configuration version, severity logic and remediation workflow
Deployment Can policy require approved models, tools, identities, environments and isolation before an agent goes live? Enforcement records showing a denied or quarantined deployment
Runtime Does it inspect incoming content, model output, pre-tool calls and post-tool responses? Event-level logs, policy decisions, latency measurements and test traces
Response Can operators block, quarantine, revoke credentials, isolate an agent and investigate the full sequence? Repeatable playbooks, exportable evidence and restoration steps

What identity and authorization features matter most?

Require a separate, attributable identity for each agent or tightly bounded workload. Shared keys and long-lived administrator tokens make it impossible to determine which agent acted and increase the blast radius of a compromise.

Use least privilege at tool and resource level

Permissions should be deny-by-default, scoped to the minimum tools and resources required for the task. OWASP’s guidance is explicit: grant agents the minimum tools required for their specific task. Test whether a policy can restrict an agent to read-only access, named repositories, specific records, approved domains or a defined transaction range.

Yubico - YubiKey 5C NFC - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-C or NFC, FIDO Certified - Protect Your Online Accounts
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
  • MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
  • PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts

Prefer short-lived, automatically rotated credentials

Check whether the platform issues short-lived credentials, binds them to an agent identity and revokes them during an incident. A product that only stores secrets in a vault but leaves the agent with a broad, persistent token does not solve authorization.

Bind approval to exact parameters

Human approval should cover the actual action, destination, data scope and parameters, not merely the fact that a tool was called. For example, approving a payment tool without displaying the beneficiary and amount leaves room for a model or tool response to alter the high-impact values after approval.

Separate roles and isolate high-risk agents

Government guidance recommends separating agent roles, isolating high-risk agents, restricting tools to an allowlist and logging tool use. Ask whether isolation is a real boundary—such as a separate runtime, network segment or disposable workspace—or only a label in the console.

How can a platform stop prompt injection and tool abuse?

It must inspect both the information an agent receives and the action it proposes. Prompt filtering alone misses indirect attacks hidden in a document, web page, repository, email or tool response.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test direct and indirect injection

Use adversarial content that tells the agent to ignore its instructions, reveal secrets, change its role or call an unapproved tool. Place the content in user messages, retrieved files, web pages, code comments, email bodies and API responses. Verify that the platform identifies the source, preserves the original evidence and applies the same policy regardless of where the text entered the context.

Validate tool definitions and responses

Tool poisoning can occur when a description, schema or response is changed to persuade the model to take an unsafe action. Require integrity monitoring for tool and MCP definitions, schema validation, destination checks and a policy decision before execution. The platform should be able to show the pre-tool request, the tool’s response and any post-tool inspection.

Yubico - YubiKey 5 NFC - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-A or NFC, FIDO Certified - Protect Your Online Accounts
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts

Control recursion and chaining

Set limits on depth, time, token use and repeated calls. A seemingly harmless tool can become dangerous when an agent recursively invokes other agents or repeatedly follows attacker-controlled instructions. Test whether limits fail closed and whether an operator can stop an in-flight chain.

What runtime detection and blocking should I expect?

Look for detections covering prompt injection, jailbreaks, unsafe tool use, sensitive-data leakage, anomalous behavior and policy violations. Detection without an enforcement mode is useful for investigation but does not reduce risk during an attack.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Audit mode: records the event without interrupting execution; useful for tuning and measuring false positives.
  • Block mode: prevents a request, tool call or response from proceeding.
  • Quarantine or isolation: moves the agent or session into a restricted environment while preserving evidence.
  • Circuit breaker: stops a runaway workflow after a threshold such as repeated failures, unusual destinations or excessive tool calls.
  • Revocation: invalidates credentials, sessions or delegated permissions so the agent cannot continue through another path.

Ask whether controls apply to every supported model provider, endpoint, cloud and network path. Measure added latency and inspect how policy exceptions are approved, time-limited and reviewed.

Which current products illustrate different approaches?

Documented capabilities are useful starting points, not proof of comparative performance. Confirm availability, coverage and preview status in a proof of concept using your own traffic.

Product example Documented approach Qualification to verify
Microsoft Defender for Endpoint Inspects user prompts, pre-tool calls and post-tool responses, with audit or block decisions where supported. Documented agent-native hooks include Claude Code, Codex CLI and GitHub Copilot CLI; network inspection covers additional supported paths. Documentation notes limitations such as certificate pinning and HTTP/3. Treat coverage and preview status as items to verify during a pilot.
Datadog AI Guard An inline, defense-in-depth control integrated with Datadog tracing. Documented protections include prompt injection, jailbreaks, tool misuse and sensitive-data exfiltration through prompt, tool and sensitive-data protection features. Access is described as limited or preview, so confirm eligibility, supported paths and enforcement scope.
CrowdStrike AI-agent approach Describes discovery of known and shadow agents, supply-chain protection, continuous agent identity, runtime monitoring and containment across the lifecycle. Validate each capability and its depth in a proof of concept; the description is not an independent benchmark.

How should I evaluate evidence and assurance?

Demand artifacts you can inspect, export and retest. Broad claims such as “AI-safe” do not tell you what was tested or what remains exposed.

Use a requirements framework

OWASP AISVS 1.0, released in June 2026, contains 191 requirements across 12 chapters and three appendices. Each requirement has verification level 1, 2 or 3. Turn the relevant requirements into procurement tests with an owner, pass condition and evidence location instead of accepting a certification-style statement without detail.

Score disclosure quality

The MIT 2025 AI Agent Index found that 25 of 30 studied agents disclosed no internal safety results, 23 of 30 disclosed no third-party testing information, and only 9 of 30 documented sandboxing or virtual-machine isolation. These figures describe disclosure in that study, not the safety of every agent or platform. Ask vendors for internal test reports, independent assessments, known limitations, incident records and residual-risk statements.

Require change-triggered testing

Agent behavior can change when a model, prompt, tool schema, retrieval source, policy or dependency changes. Require regression tests to run after those changes and retain the before-and-after results. Evidence should include the exact version, test inputs, expected decision, observed decision and reviewer.

What integrations and operational details affect the buying decision?

A technically capable product still fails if your teams cannot deploy, tune and investigate it. Evaluate integration and operations as part of security coverage.

  • Security operations: SIEM, SOAR, XDR, case management, alert enrichment and bidirectional response actions.
  • Identity: identity providers, role changes, conditional access, service-account lifecycle and emergency revocation.
  • Infrastructure: cloud platforms, containers, endpoints, API gateways, proxies, network controls and observability pipelines.
  • Data handling: residency, retention, tenant isolation, encryption, support access and whether prompts or tool payloads are used for product improvement.
  • Operations: deployment method, latency, false-positive review, policy versioning, exception expiry, ownership and change management.

Ask for a coverage matrix by agent type, model provider, cloud, endpoint and network path. A product that protects only one popular coding client may be valuable for that use case but should not be presented as enterprise-wide agent protection.

How do I run a representative pilot?

Use a time-boxed pilot with production-like tools and data flows, not a vendor-controlled demo. Keep a baseline of normal activity so you can distinguish useful detections from noise.

  1. Choose representative agents. Include a user-facing workflow, a coding or operations agent, an agent that retrieves internal documents, an MCP-enabled agent and one high-impact workflow.
  2. Build the inventory. Record models, tools, MCP servers, identities, data stores, destinations, owners and current permissions.
  3. Establish safe test boundaries. Use synthetic secrets, non-production accounts and reversible transactions. Define a stop condition before testing destructive actions.
  4. Run injection tests. Place direct and indirect payloads in prompts, documents, web pages, repositories, emails and tool responses. Record detection, source attribution and final action.
  5. Exercise authorization. Attempt unapproved tools, out-of-scope records, privilege escalation, altered approval parameters and use of expired or revoked credentials.
  6. Test data and memory threats. Attempt exfiltration to an unapproved destination, poison long-term memory or retrieval content, and trigger recursive tool use.
  7. Compare enforcement modes. Measure audit, block, quarantine, isolation, circuit-breaker and revocation workflows. Confirm that a blocked action cannot continue through a second path.
  8. Measure operations. Capture latency, false positives, analyst effort, alert quality, coverage gaps and time to investigate an incident.
  9. Export evidence. Require event logs, policy versions, test traces, residual-risk statements and a report that can be retained for audit.
  10. Retest after change. Change a model, tool schema, retrieval source and policy, then rerun the relevant cases to verify regression controls.

What procurement questions expose hidden gaps?

Put these questions in the request for proposal and require written, product-specific answers backed by demonstrations or artifacts.

Which warning signs should disqualify a platform?

Reject or pause a product when it cannot provide evidence for the paths your agents actually use.

  • It offers only prompt scanning with no tool-call inspection or authorization enforcement.
  • It inventories registered agents but cannot find shadow agents or attribute identities.
  • It relies on shared, long-lived credentials or cannot revoke an agent during an incident.
  • It claims broad coverage but will not enumerate unsupported model, endpoint, cloud, MCP or network paths.
  • It provides alerts without raw logs, policy versions, exportable evidence or investigation context.
  • It has no safe way to test blocking, isolation, approval binding, recursion limits or fail-closed behavior.
  • It cannot explain false-positive handling, latency impact, data retention or what happens during an outage.

How do I make the final selection?

Weight the decision toward controls that reduce blast radius and produce verifiable evidence. A useful scorecard gives separate scores for discovery, identity and least privilege, input and tool inspection, enforcement and containment, evidence, integrations and operational effort. Mark unsupported paths as coverage gaps rather than averaging them into a reassuring total.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a web application firewall replace an AI agent security platform?

No. A web application firewall can protect selected HTTP traffic, but it generally cannot see an agent’s internal prompt context, tool parameters, memory writes or approval state. Use it as one layer alongside identity, runtime and agent-specific controls.

How often should agent security tests be rerun?

Rerun baseline and adversarial tests whenever a model, system prompt, tool schema, MCP server, retrieval source, policy or major dependency changes. High-impact workflows also benefit from scheduled tests because external content and provider behavior can change without a code deployment.

What is the safest way to test data-exfiltration controls?

Use synthetic secrets and non-production destinations that your organization owns, with reversible actions and a pre-agreed stop condition. Verify both the attempted transfer and the evidence showing which policy, identity and destination caused the decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should every agent have its own identity?

Use a distinct identity whenever practical, especially for agents that can write data, send messages or change infrastructure. Where a shared service is unavoidable, constrain it with narrowly scoped, short-lived credentials and additional approval and logging controls.
