Choose an AI agent platform by proving what each agent can do, what it cannot do, and what evidence remains after every action. The strongest choice is not the platform with the longest feature list; it is the one that gives every agent a distinct, governable identity, enforces least-privilege access across all connected systems, contains sessions and tools, requires approval for consequential actions, and produces tamper-resistant logs that investigators can export and use. Validate those controls in a configured tenant with your identity stack, data boundaries, and representative workflows before granting broad autonomy. Microsoft Entra Agent ID, Google Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, and Amazon Bedrock AgentCore illustrate different approaches, but their documentation does not establish that any one is safest or that features are equivalent across products.

What should you require from an AI agent platform?

Start with five decisions: identity, authorization, containment and approvals, audit evidence, and operational fit. Treat a vendor’s documented feature as a claim to verify in your own deployment, not as proof of end-to-end enforcement.

  • Identity: Every agent needs a unique, attributable identity, an accountable sponsor or owner, and a lifecycle that supports disabling, rotating credentials, and revoking access. Record whether an action was made by the agent itself or delegated by a human user.
  • Authorization: Permissions must be narrow, enforceable, and evaluated across tools, APIs, data stores, and downstream agents. Review aggregate effective access rather than the role displayed in one administration console.
  • Containment and approvals: Sessions, tenants, memory, and execution environments should be isolated. High-impact or hard-to-reverse actions need policy checks and, where appropriate, human approval. A confirmation prompt alone is not a security boundary.
  • Audit evidence: Logs should identify the agent, initiating authority, session or correlation ID, tool and target, authorization decision, outcome, and relevant approval or policy context for risky actions. Verify export, retention, protection from alteration, access controls, and alerting.
  • Operations and fit: The platform must connect to your identity provider, monitoring, governance, incident-response, and data-residency requirements. Your team must be able to remove stale access and investigate an incident without depending on the agent that caused it.

These requirements are inseparable. A unique identity without revocation is only a label; a permission model without complete logs cannot be investigated; and perfect logs do not compensate for an agent that can reach every production system.

How should an agent’s identity work?

Use a service identity for the agent and preserve the identity of any user whose authority it is exercising. That separation makes ownership, policy, and incident response possible.

Give each agent a distinct identity

Do not run autonomous work through a developer’s personal account or a shared credential. A dedicated identity lets you disable one agent without locking out a person, rotate its credentials independently, and distinguish its activity from normal user sign-ins. For systems that create many copies of an agent, decide whether each instance receives its own identity or whether a parent identity is supplemented by an instance identifier; either way, the audit record must identify the actual execution.

Assign a sponsor and operational owner

Record who is accountable for the agent’s purpose, data access, prompt and tool changes, and retirement. Separate business sponsorship from technical administration when possible. Require an owner to review the agent’s access after material workflow, model, connector, or data changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Define the lifecycle before deployment

Your lifecycle should cover request, approval, creation, testing, production release, suspension, credential rotation, transfer of ownership, and deletion. A disabled agent should lose access promptly, including access granted indirectly through group membership, API keys, delegated tokens, or downstream tools. Test the delay between a revocation request and the last permitted action.

Preserve delegated-user context

An agent may act with its own service identity, on behalf of a signed-in user, or through a token that combines both. Log both principals and the delegation relationship. If the platform records only the service identity, an investigator cannot tell whether a user initiated the request, an automated schedule triggered it, or another agent delegated the work.

How do you evaluate permissions and least privilege?

Evaluate what the agent can actually reach and change, not merely the role shown in its home console. Map every connector, API, database, file store, plug-in, model tool, and downstream agent that participates in a workflow.

Build a permission inventory

For each agent, document:

  • Resources it can read, create, modify, delete, send, or approve.
  • Actions available through each tool, including hidden or inherited operations.
  • Credentials, tokens, certificates, and secrets used to obtain that access.
  • Data returned to the model, stored in memory, written to files, or passed to another agent.
  • Delegated permissions that are added when a user starts a session.
  • Permission inheritance through groups, projects, folders, environments, or organization-wide policies.

Then calculate aggregate effective access. An agent with read-only access in five systems may still be able to assemble sensitive data; an agent with separate low-risk permissions may gain a high-impact outcome by chaining tools. Review the path from prompt to final side effect, not just each connector in isolation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prefer narrow scopes and temporary elevation

Grant only the operations required for the stated task. Separate read, write, delete, publish, financial, and administrative capabilities where the platform allows it. For workflows that occasionally need elevated rights, use time-limited or approval-bound elevation instead of a permanently powerful credential. The elevation event should be visible in the audit trail and automatically expire.

Check enforcement at the target system

A platform’s policy engine may limit which tool an agent can call while the target API still accepts a broader token. Confirm that authorization is enforced at every trust boundary: the agent runtime, gateway or broker, tool, API, data store, and downstream service. Attempt the same prohibited operation through alternate routes, such as a raw API call, a different connector, or a second agent.

Control agent-to-agent delegation

Agent chains can silently multiply privilege. Define which agents may invoke one another, what identity and permissions are passed, and whether the callee can impersonate the caller. Require an explicit purpose and scope for delegation, and prevent an untrusted agent from selecting an unrestricted successor.

What containment and approval controls matter?

Containment limits the damage when a model is manipulated, a tool behaves unexpectedly, or a legitimate instruction is misunderstood. Approval controls add a human decision at points where an error is costly or difficult to reverse.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Isolate sessions, tenants, memory, and execution

Verify that one user’s conversation, files, retrieved context, and memory cannot be read by another user or tenant. Test both ordinary retrieval and error paths, such as retries, cached tool results, parallel sessions, and restored conversation state. Run code or file-processing tools in an isolated runtime with restricted network and filesystem access; the model should not receive unrestricted shell, browser, or network capabilities.

Treat external content as untrusted

Documents, web pages, messages, tool responses, and retrieved records can contain prompt-injection instructions. Keep untrusted content separate from policy and system instructions, constrain the operations it can trigger, and require a policy decision before it influences a high-impact action. Do not let the model’s own text serve as the authorization decision.

Use approvals for consequential actions

Define a list of actions that require a human or an independent policy service, such as deleting records, changing access, releasing funds, publishing externally, sending regulated data, or modifying production infrastructure. The approval request should show the proposed action, target, parameters, requesting identity, relevant data, and policy reason. Record the approver, time, decision, and whether the executed action matched the approved parameters.

Do not mistake prompts for boundaries

A message telling an agent to “ask before deleting” can be bypassed by a manipulated prompt, a compromised tool response, or a bug. Enforce the approval requirement in the tool gateway, API, workflow engine, or target service so that the action is blocked when approval is absent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What must an AI agent audit log contain?

A useful log lets an investigator reconstruct who or what requested an action, which policy applied, what the agent attempted, and what actually happened. Capture events at the runtime and at the systems that execute the side effect.

Minimum event fields

  • Identity: agent identifier and version, service principal, initiating user, sponsor or tenant where relevant, and any delegated relationship.
  • Correlation: session, conversation, workflow, request, and parent-agent identifiers so a chain can be followed end to end.
  • Action: model or workflow step, tool name and version, operation, target resource, parameters or a privacy-preserving representation, and data classification.
  • Decision: allow, deny, require approval, or modify; the policy, role, scope, and authorization service that produced the decision.
  • Outcome: success, failure, timeout, partial completion, returned status, and any retry or fallback.
  • Risk context: approval request and response, policy version, elevated privilege, prompt-injection or anomaly signal, and human intervention for high-risk actions.

Full prompts and tool payloads may contain secrets or personal data. Decide what must be retained, what can be redacted or hashed, and how investigators can obtain protected content under controlled access. A log that omits the decisive fields is not made adequate by retaining it for a long time.

Test the evidence pipeline

Confirm that events are exported in a usable format to your central monitoring or security information system, with stable field names and timestamps that can be correlated with identity-provider and target-system logs. Set retention according to legal, contractual, and incident-response needs, and verify that an administrator, agent, or compromised connector cannot edit or delete evidence without a separately logged, restricted operation. Configure alerts for unusual tool use, denied-access spikes, privilege changes, disabled logging, and changes to agent instructions or connectors.

How do leading platform approaches compare?

The following examples show how vendors describe relevant building blocks. They are not a like-for-like benchmark, and the cited material does not establish feature parity, pricing, certification status, or security outcomes. Verify the exact product edition, region, version, tenant configuration, connected systems, and division of operational responsibility.

Platform example Documented focus Questions to validate in your deployment
Microsoft Entra Agent ID Unique identities for agents, sponsors and owners, blueprint-level policy application, and monitoring guidance for sign-ins and configuration changes. Does every production instance receive an attributable identity? Can you revoke it quickly across delegated tokens and connectors? Are tool calls and target-system outcomes exported with user delegation and approval context?
Google Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform Governance components covering agent discovery, identity and access, security, and auditing. Which controls are available in your region and plan? Are memory, session, tenant, and execution boundaries enforced across all connectors? Can your investigators export complete, immutable events?
Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Architecture guidance for agent runtime and identity, agent registries with purpose, permissions, and ownership metadata, and MCP gateway access controls. Where is authorization enforced for each tool and API? How are chained agents represented in logs? Can temporary elevation, approval, revocation, and cross-account access be demonstrated?

Use the same test cases and evidence requirements for every candidate. A platform can satisfy a checklist in its own console while a connector, custom tool, or downstream service weakens the effective control.

How should you test a candidate platform before rollout?

Run a proof in a non-production tenant that mirrors your identity provider, representative data classifications, connectors, and network controls. The goal is to observe enforcement and evidence, not to accept a slide or feature checkbox.

  1. Model one real workflow. Choose a useful process with at least one read, one write, one external-data input, and one action that would require approval. Define the intended user, agent, tools, targets, and maximum damage before testing.
  2. Verify identity attribution. Start the workflow as two different users and through an unattended schedule. Confirm that every event identifies the agent instance, user or scheduler, sponsor, session, and delegation path.
  3. Attempt unauthorized tool use. Ask the agent to call a tool outside its scope, reach a second tenant, read a restricted record, and invoke an alternate connector. The target system should deny the operation, and the denial should be logged with the policy reason.
  4. Test cross-session and memory isolation. Place a unique marker in one user’s session, memory store, and uploaded file. Try to retrieve it from another user, tenant, concurrent session, retry, and restored conversation.
  5. Test prompt-injection resistance. Put instructions in a retrieved document or tool response that request secret disclosure or a prohibited action. Confirm that untrusted content cannot bypass policy or approval controls.
  6. Test high-impact approval. Attempt a destructive, external-send, access-changing, or production-like action. Verify that execution is blocked until an authorized approver accepts the exact parameters, and that changes after approval trigger a new decision.
  7. Revoke access during activity. Disable the agent, remove a group, revoke a token, and rotate a credential while a workflow is running. Measure how quickly new actions stop and whether queued or retried actions are also blocked.
  8. Inspect the evidence. Export the complete event chain and reconcile it with identity-provider, gateway, and target-system records. Check timestamps, correlation IDs, policy versions, payload protection, retention behavior, and administrator access.
  9. Exercise incident response. Simulate a compromised connector or suspicious burst of tool calls. Confirm that responders can quarantine the agent, identify affected resources, preserve logs, rotate secrets, and restore a known-good configuration without relying on the agent.

Keep a test record containing the configuration, expected control, observed result, evidence location, and owner for remediation. Repeat the tests after major model, connector, policy, or platform changes.

How do operations and governance affect the choice?

The platform must fit the controls your organization can operate every day, not only the controls it advertises.

Policy administration

Determine who can create agents, approve tools, change prompts or system instructions, grant elevation, alter retention, and disable logging. Require separation of duties for high-risk changes and a reviewable change history. Policies should apply consistently to agents created from templates as well as individually configured agents.

Identity and monitoring integration

Check support for your identity provider, single sign-on, multifactor authentication, privileged-access workflows, secrets manager, security monitoring, ticketing, and data-loss prevention controls. Integration is useful only if the events preserve the agent and delegated-user context needed for investigation.

Data and deployment boundaries

Confirm where prompts, tool results, memory, embeddings, logs, and backups are processed and stored. Review network egress, private connectivity, encryption-key ownership, tenant isolation, and regional processing requirements. Establish which controls are operated by the vendor, your cloud provider, your platform team, and the owner of each connected system.

Revocation and incident response

Document a short path from detection to containment: disable the agent, revoke tokens, remove group or role grants, block tools, rotate secrets, preserve evidence, and notify affected owners. If those actions require several consoles or vendor support, account for the delay in your risk assessment.

What failure modes should disqualify a platform or design?

  • Shared personal credentials: Activity cannot be attributed or revoked without affecting a person.
  • Console-only permissions: The displayed role is narrow, but an API token, connector, or downstream service grants broader effective access.
  • Model-as-authorizer: The agent decides from its own text whether an action is allowed instead of a deterministic policy at the enforcement point.
  • Prompt-only approvals: A conversational instruction can be bypassed and does not block the target operation.
  • Incomplete logs: Events omit the initiating user, target, policy decision, approval, or outcome, preventing reconstruction.
  • Mutable evidence: The agent administrator or compromised runtime can alter or delete its own records without an independently protected copy.
  • Unbounded memory or tools: Cross-session context, unrestricted network access, or a generic shell turns a narrow workflow into a broad data-exfiltration path.
  • Stale access: Agents remain active after an owner leaves, a project ends, a connector changes, or a credential is rotated.
  • Unreviewed chaining: Agents can invoke other agents with inherited or expanded privileges that no owner has approved.

How can you make a defensible selection?

Use a weighted decision record rather than a feature-counting exercise. Set the weights with security, identity, platform, legal, and business owners before demonstrations so a polished interface does not dominate the outcome.

Decision area Evidence to require Suggested decision rule
Identity and ownership Unique identity, sponsor, owner, lifecycle events, delegated-user attribution, and revocation timing. Reject if production agents cannot be individually disabled and traced.
Authorization Effective-permission map, target-side enforcement, temporary elevation, agent-chain controls, and denial tests. Prefer the option that proves least privilege across the whole workflow, not one console.
Containment and approvals Isolation tests, restricted execution, untrusted-content handling, approval policy, and parameter binding. Require deterministic blocking for defined high-impact actions.
Auditability Complete event schema, export, retention, immutability, protected access, alerting, and investigation drill. Reject if a responder cannot reconstruct and preserve a risky action.
Operations and fit Identity, monitoring, data-boundary, deployment, change-management, and incident-response integration. Choose the platform your team can operate consistently under pressure.

Document exceptions explicitly. If a workflow cannot meet a control, reduce its autonomy, restrict its data, add an external approval service, or keep it in a non-production environment. Reassess when the model, tools, identity architecture, or business impact changes.

What do current security guidelines say?

OWASP’s DevSecOps guidance recommends dedicated agent identities instead of personal credentials, scoped credentials, least privilege, isolated execution, treating external content as untrusted, human review at high-impact points, and centralized logging of tool calls and outcomes. Its guiding principle is: “The guiding principle is least agency: give the agent only the autonomy, tools, and access its task requires, for only as long as it needs them.”

The OWASP AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet similarly emphasizes logging decisions, tool calls, and outcomes; maintaining audit trails; capturing metadata for high-risk decisions; isolating memory and context; and avoiding unrestricted tools or model output as the authorization decision.

Microsoft’s least-privilege pattern highlights identity, scope, tool access, auditability, aggregate permissions, and temporary privilege. Microsoft’s Entra Agent ID guidance describes unique identities, sponsors and owners, blueprint-level policy, and monitoring for sign-ins and configuration changes. These are product capabilities and recommendations, not independent evidence that a particular deployment satisfies your requirements.

AWS Prescriptive Guidance presents runtime and identity, agent registries containing purpose, permissions, and ownership metadata, and MCP gateway controls as architectural components. Google’s Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform governance documentation covers discovery, identity and access, security, and audit. Validate the exact availability and configuration in your intended deployment.

NIST’s February 2026 publication is a draft concept paper seeking input for a possible project. It raises questions about agent identification, authentication, authorization, auditing and non-repudiation, and prompt injection; it is not a final standard or a buyer checklist.

Which platform is the safest choice?

There is no universal winner. The best choice depends on your use case, threat model, existing identity stack, data boundaries, deployment model, and operating capacity. Select the platform that passes your configuration review and scenario tests with the smallest effective privilege, the clearest ownership and revocation path, and evidence your incident responders can trust.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep autonomy proportional to demonstrated controls. Start with read-only or reversible tasks, add write access only after denial, approval, isolation, revocation, and logging tests pass, and expand one workflow at a time. Treat every new connector, model, memory store, and agent chain as a new trust boundary requiring review.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an AI agent use a human user’s permissions safely?

It can, but only when the delegation is explicit, short-lived where possible, and recorded alongside the agent identity. The target service should enforce the delegated scope, and revoking the user or agent should stop new actions rather than leaving a reusable token active.

How long should agent audit logs be retained?

Set retention from legal, contractual, and incident-response requirements rather than from a generic platform default. Protect high-value records from alteration and ensure investigators can retrieve the relevant prompt, tool, approval, and target-system evidence under controlled access.

Should every agent action require human approval?

No. Approval is most useful for actions that are destructive, externally visible, financially material, access-changing, or difficult to reverse. Requiring approval for every low-risk read can encourage unsafe workarounds, while omitting it for a high-impact write leaves a preventable gap.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the fastest way to find excessive agent permissions?

Trace one representative workflow from prompt to final side effect and enumerate every connector, token, group, API, and downstream agent it can use. Then attempt the same prohibited operation through alternate routes and compare the observed denials with the effective-permission map.

How often should an agent’s access be reviewed?

Review at creation, before production release, after any model, connector, prompt, policy, or data change, and when the owner or business purpose changes. High-impact agents should also have a scheduled review and an automated check for stale credentials or unused privileges.
