Choose the framework that matches your hardest failure mode, not the one with the longest feature list. Start with LangGraph when you need explicit branches, retries, approval pauses, replay, and inspectable state. Choose CrewAI for readable role-based teams and task handoffs, AutoGen for conversational or event-driven multi-agent collaboration, Google ADK for Google Cloud and polyglot estates, and the OpenAI Agents SDK for a compact set of agents, handoffs, tools, sessions, guardrails, and tracing. Microsoft-stack teams should also evaluate Microsoft Agent Framework.

For any framework, persistence, restart recovery, idempotent retries, worker lifecycle, approval pauses, and completion guarantees are separate architecture decisions. A checkpoint proves that some state was saved; it does not by itself prove that a crashed job will resume safely or finish exactly once.

Which AI agent framework is best for long-running tasks?

There is no universal winner. Select the framework whose execution model makes your most dangerous failure visible and controllable. The table below is a practical starting point, not a speed, cost, or accuracy benchmark.

Requirement Best starting point Why it fits Watch-out
Branching, retries, approval pauses, and replay LangGraph Explicit graph and state control with checkpointing More design work; durable completion still depends on the underlying execution layer
Role-based research, content, or business pipeline CrewAI Agents, crews, tasks, and flows support sequential, hierarchical, or hybrid processes Validate persistence and observability at your production scale
Open-ended team conversation or distributed agents AutoGen AgentChat and event-driven Core abstractions model message-driven collaboration Deployment persistence and recovery remain architecture-specific
Compact handoffs, sessions, and guardrails OpenAI Agents SDK Documented primitives include tools, handoffs, sessions, serializable run state, human review, MCP, tracing, and testing Confirm provider, storage, and long-run execution choices before committing
Google Cloud or a polyglot deployment Google ADK SDKs for Python, TypeScript, Go, Java, and Kotlin, plus graph workflows and Cloud deployment paths Cloud coupling and a rapidly changing release surface
Microsoft, .NET, or Azure estate Microsoft Agent Framework Positioned as the successor to AutoGen and Semantic Kernel, with graph workflows and Azure-oriented tooling Re-check current release and support status before production adoption

A June 6, 2026 comparison from LangChain covers seven frameworks: LangChain, CrewAI, Microsoft Agent Framework, LlamaIndex Workflows, Google ADK, OpenAI Agents SDK, and Mastra. That is the size of the comparison set, not a benchmark ranking.

What makes a long-running agent task different from a normal agent call?

A short agent call can often fail fast and be retried from the beginning. A long-running task may span hours or days, wait for a person, cross several deployments, call systems with side effects, or encounter a provider outage. Its design must therefore separate model reasoning from durable workflow execution.

Control of execution

Explicit graphs represent states and allowed transitions such as plan, retrieve, draft, request approval, publish, and compensate. Model-selected conversations are more flexible, but the next action is less predictable. If a missed branch, duplicate charge, or skipped approval is unacceptable, explicit transitions are usually easier to inspect, test, and audit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Durability

Durability means more than writing a checkpoint. You need a durable state store, a way to detect a failed worker, a policy for retrying or abandoning work, and a mechanism that starts the task again after a process restart, deployment, or provider outage. Approval waits must survive longer than the process that created them.

Coordination model

Decide whether you have one agent with tools, a set of handoffs, a role-based crew, a conversational team, or independently deployed event-driven agents. A framework can support several patterns, but its defaults affect how much custom coordination code you will maintain.

Language and ecosystem

Match the SDK to the languages, cloud controls, identity systems, and observability stack your team already operates. Google ADK lists Python, TypeScript, Go, Java, and Kotlin SDKs. Google ADK, Microsoft Agent Framework, and provider-specific tooling can reduce integration work in their respective estates, while a provider-neutral design may preserve portability.

Operations

Long jobs need traces that connect model calls, tool calls, state transitions, human decisions, and retries. They also need evaluation data, safe cancellation, deployment controls, and a way to inspect a stuck run without attaching a debugger to a live worker.

How do I choose a framework step by step?

Use a failure-first process. It prevents a visually appealing demo from hiding the operational work that determines whether a week-long run is trustworthy.

1. Write the task timeline

List every state from trigger to final side effect. Mark where the task can wait, branch, loop, call an external system, or require approval. Include ordinary delays such as a customer response or a rate-limit window; these are part of the workflow, not exceptional cases.

2. Classify the hardest failure

  • If the main risk is an incorrect route, skipped condition, or unbounded loop, prioritize explicit graph and state control.
  • If the main risk is coordination among specialist roles, prioritize task and handoff abstractions that remain readable to operators.
  • If the main risk is distributed messaging, prioritize event identity, delivery semantics, and recovery behavior in the framework and its runtime.
  • If the main risk is a human decision arriving days later, verify durable approval state and resumption before evaluating prompt quality.

3. Define the state contract

Specify which data must survive a restart: inputs, completed steps, tool results, pending approvals, retry counters, leases, and schema versions. Keep large artifacts in object or document storage and retain references in workflow state when appropriate. Decide which values are safe to recompute and which must be immutable evidence.

4. Define side-effect policy

For every email, ticket, payment, database write, or deployment action, document an idempotency key and the point at which the action is considered committed. A retry should be able to discover that an action already happened instead of performing it twice.

5. Test recovery before comparing model quality

Kill a worker during a tool call, after a tool call but before the checkpoint, while waiting for approval, and during a deployment. Verify that the run resumes at a safe state, that completed side effects are not duplicated, and that operators can identify the reason for any pause.

6. Compare a small production-shaped slice

Build the same slice in two candidate frameworks: one branch, one retry, one approval gate, one external side effect, and one simulated crash. Measure engineering effort, trace quality, recovery time, duplicate prevention, and ease of changing the state schema. Do not infer a universal winner from token cost or latency on a toy prompt.

When is LangGraph the right starting point?

LangGraph is the strongest default when execution must be explicit. Its graph and state model suits branching, loops, retries, approval gates, replay, and inspection of state transitions. LangChain’s June 6, 2026 comparison describes LangGraph as an agent runtime for complex agents requiring precision, while positioning Deep Agents as a harness for long-running workflows.

A typical design has typed state, nodes for deterministic or model-driven work, conditional edges, and checkpoints at meaningful boundaries. Pairing it with LangSmith can provide tracing and evaluation workflows. That observability helps explain why a run took a branch, but it does not replace a durable worker and retry design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose LangGraph when your team is willing to model the workflow directly. The trade-off is design overhead: every state transition, cancellation path, and schema migration becomes part of the application you own.

When does CrewAI fit better than a graph-first design?

CrewAI fits role-based pipelines in which people can understand the system as agents, crews, and tasks. Its documentation describes flows that can persist execution and resume long-running workflows, while tasks can run sequential, hierarchical, or hybrid processes and can trigger human involvement.

This model is useful for a research-and-review pipeline, a content operation with specialist roles, or a business process in which work is handed from one responsibility to another. The readable vocabulary can make ownership and task boundaries clear to non-platform stakeholders.

Before production, validate how persistence behaves across deploys, how a waiting human trigger is represented, how traces connect individual tasks, and how a failed task is retried without repeating its side effects. A role description is not a recovery policy; you still need explicit state, idempotency, and operational tests.

Is AutoGen still the right choice for conversational or distributed teams?

AutoGen remains a sensible choice when collaboration is naturally message-driven. Microsoft’s documentation separates AgentChat, a conversational single- and multi-agent framework, from Core, an event-driven framework for scalable multi-agent systems and distributed agents.

Use AgentChat when the product is an observable conversation among agents and humans. Use Core when independent agents communicate through events and may be scaled or deployed separately. In both cases, define message identity, ordering assumptions, duplicate delivery handling, and the durable record of decisions.

Do not assume that a successful conversation transcript is sufficient recovery state. Verify where pending messages, tool results, and unfinished work live when a process exits. AutoGen can model the collaboration; your deployment design must make the collaboration restartable.

When should I choose the OpenAI Agents SDK?

The OpenAI Agents SDK is a compact option for teams that want a focused set of agent primitives rather than a larger graph abstraction. Its official documentation covers agents, tools, handoffs, guardrails, sessions, serializable run state, human-in-the-loop controls, MCP, tracing, and testing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is a good fit for a bounded handoff system: for example, a triage agent routes a case to a specialist, a guardrail blocks an unsafe action, and a human approves the final tool call. Sessions and serializable run state can provide useful building blocks for pause and resume.

Confirm the provider and storage assumptions before using it for multi-day work. Decide where serialized state is stored, how tool calls are made idempotent, how long sessions are retained, and which runtime is responsible for restarting a worker. The SDK primitives do not by themselves select those policies.

When does Google ADK make sense?

Google ADK is a strong candidate for Google Cloud teams and organizations that need several implementation languages. Its documentation lists Python, TypeScript, Go, Java, and Kotlin SDKs, along with graph workflows, multi-agent workflows, resume and cancel operations, observability, and deployment options including Cloud Run and GKE.

The language range can matter more than a small API difference when platform services are split across teams. Graph workflows also give a structured option for tasks that need explicit transitions, while multi-agent features cover more collaborative designs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Account for cloud coupling and release volatility. Confirm the exact SDK versions, supported runtime, identity model, logging integration, and behavior of resume and cancel in the region and deployment target you will operate. A feature listed in documentation still needs a failure-injection test in your environment.

Should Microsoft-stack teams use Microsoft Agent Framework?

Microsoft Agent Framework is positioned in LangChain’s comparison as the unified successor to AutoGen and Semantic Kernel for Microsoft-stack teams. The comparison describes graph workflows, Python and .NET runtimes, and Azure AI Foundry guardrails.

That positioning makes it worth evaluating when your application already uses .NET, Azure identity, Azure deployment controls, or Azure AI Foundry governance. The framework may reduce the number of adapters your team maintains.

Release status, support windows, and feature boundaries are volatile. Re-check current general-availability and support details, then run the same crash, approval, and duplicate-side-effect tests you would run for any other candidate.

Do I need Temporal or another durable workflow engine?

You may need a durable workflow engine when the agent task must survive worker loss, deployments, long approval waits, scheduled wake-ups, or repeated retries with strong completion guarantees. A framework can define agent behavior while a workflow engine owns timers, leases, retries, and durable orchestration.

You may not need a separate engine for a short-lived, low-risk task whose output can be regenerated and whose tools are read-only. The decision turns on recovery and side-effect requirements, not on whether the task is labeled an agent.

A Vercel comparison dated August 3, 2026 emphasizes that frameworks commonly save state and detect failures while leaving resumption and guaranteed completion to an underlying layer. Treat that as an architecture boundary: document which component owns each guarantee instead of assuming checkpointing supplies all of them.

How should restart recovery be designed?

Design recovery as a normal path, not an emergency script. The following components should be specified before launch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Durable state and versioning

Store a run identifier, current state, state version, input references, completed-step records, pending approvals, retry counts, and timestamps in durable storage. Define migrations for state written by an older application version so a deploy cannot strand in-flight work.

Leases and worker ownership

Give active work a renewable lease or equivalent ownership record. When the lease expires, a replacement worker can claim the run. Set the lease longer than the slowest expected tool call or renew it during that call; otherwise healthy work may be mistaken for a failure.

Retries and backoff

Classify errors as transient, permanent, or unknown. Apply bounded exponential backoff to transient provider and network errors, route permanent validation errors to a human or dead-letter state, and cap attempts so a broken run does not loop indefinitely.

Idempotent side effects

Send a stable operation key with each external write when the target supports it. If it does not, record an intent before the call and reconcile the target afterward. The recovery test must cover the ambiguous interval in which the target accepted the request but the worker crashed before recording success.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Approval pauses

Persist the approval request, permitted decisions, requester, deadline, and security context. On approval, resume from a known state and verify that the decision applies to the current version of the plan. Expired or revoked approvals should route to review rather than silently continuing.

Cancellation and compensation

Define what cancellation means for each state. A queued run can stop immediately; a tool call may need to finish; a partially completed business action may require compensation. Expose these outcomes to operators instead of reporting every stop as a generic failure.

What should I measure in a framework evaluation?

Use workload-specific acceptance criteria because the available comparisons describe capabilities and fit, not a common benchmark of speed, cost, or accuracy.

  • Recovery: percentage of injected crashes that resume safely, time to resume, and number of duplicate side effects.
  • Control: whether every branch, retry, approval, and cancellation is visible in traces.
  • Operability: ability to find stuck runs, inspect state, replay a safe step, and correlate model and tool calls.
  • Change safety: effort to add a branch, migrate state, change a role, or replace a model provider.
  • Governance: human review, guardrails, audit records, access controls, and retention behavior.
  • Economics: model usage, storage, worker time, observability, and any managed-runtime charges under your actual workload.

Do not describe one framework as universally fastest, cheapest, or most accurate without a controlled evaluation of your own prompts, tools, concurrency, and recovery policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What are the most common selection mistakes?

Choosing from a demo

A demo proves that an agent can complete the happy path. It does not show what happens when a worker dies between two writes or when an approval arrives after a deploy.

Confusing checkpointing with completion

A saved snapshot can still be lost, duplicated, or resumed by two workers. Completion requires ownership, retry, idempotency, and reconciliation rules in addition to state storage.

Letting the model own irreversible routing

Use deterministic policy or an approval gate for actions that affect money, access, regulated data, or customer commitments. Let the model propose; let the workflow enforce.

Ignoring schema evolution

Long-running runs may outlive several releases. Version state, keep backward-compatible readers during migration, and test resumption from old snapshots.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comparing frameworks without the runtime

Two identical agent graphs can behave differently because of queue semantics, database isolation, timeout settings, or worker autoscaling. Evaluate the framework together with the durable store and deployment model you will actually operate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I migrate a long-running agent from one framework to another?

Yes, if you keep business state and artifacts separate from framework-specific snapshots. Define a portable run schema, export pending work and approvals, then migrate only at a safe state boundary rather than translating an actively executing node.

How long should an agent run be allowed to remain paused?

Set the limit from the business process and the validity of its inputs or approvals, not from a framework default. At expiry, mark the run for revalidation or cancellation and retain the original decision for audit.

What is the safest way to handle a model-provider outage?

Pause model-dependent states, preserve deterministic progress, and retry with bounded backoff. If a fallback model is allowed, record which model produced each decision and re-run policy checks before any irreversible action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can operators find a run that is stuck but not technically failed?

Emit a heartbeat and a next-action timestamp for every active run. Alert when the timestamp passes without a state transition, and expose the last tool call, lease owner, retry count, and pending human decision in the run view.
