Give an AI agent only the access, authority, data and time its current task requires—and treat every consequential action as a separate authorization decision. Start with deny-by-default, use a distinct auditable identity with short-lived credentials, separate read from write access, and enforce checks in the tool or service that performs the action. Require fresh human confirmation for sending, deleting, paying, changing privileges or deploying, then have an independent execution component verify the exact approved parameters. Logs, sandboxing, restricted network egress and a tested revoke or pause path limit damage when an agent is manipulated. This approach, reflected in 2026 CISA guidance, OWASP control guidance, Microsoft’s oversight guidance and NIST NCCoE’s February 2026 concept paper, treats permissions as system design—not as a prompt-writing trick.
What permissions should an AI agent have for a sensitive task?
An agent should have the minimum set of tools, operations, records, resources and time window needed to complete one defined job. A document-review agent may need read access to a named folder and permission to produce a report; it usually does not need the ability to send email, alter files, change sharing settings or call arbitrary external services.

Use a deny-by-default policy. Add access in small increments, and make read-only the starting point. Treat write, administrative and externally visible operations as separate capabilities, even when they concern the same system.
- Tools: expose only the APIs or functions required for the task.
- Operations: distinguish list and read from create, update, delete, send or administer.
- Resources: bind calls to named records, repositories, tenants, accounts or environments.
- Duration: issue access for the task’s expected lifetime, not indefinitely.
- Outputs: control where results can go; a summary can still disclose sensitive data.
Least privilege is the recurring recommendation in joint CISA and partner adoption guidance, OWASP’s AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet, OWASP’s DevSecOps guidance and Microsoft’s agent oversight guidance. NIST’s National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) February 2026 concept paper places identity, authorization, delegation and auditing at the center of the same design problem; it is a concept paper rather than a finished prescriptive standard.

How do I classify an agent’s task before granting access?
Classify the requested operation by the harm a mistake could cause and how difficult the result would be to reverse. Do not classify the model as “trusted” or “untrusted” in the abstract; classify each tool call and target.
| Task class | Typical examples | Permission pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Read and summarize | Search approved records, extract fields, produce an internal brief | Narrow read-only scope, selected data sources, controlled output destinations |
| Prepare but do not commit | Draft a customer message, payment, configuration change or deletion plan | Read access plus a draft or simulation function; no commit capability |
| Execute bounded routine actions | Update a known ticket, rotate a test resource, apply a low-impact label | Defined operation and resource limits, scoped credentials, rate or amount limits, logging and interruption |
| High-impact or hard-to-reverse | Send externally, delete data, initiate payment, change privileges, deploy code | Fresh approval tied to exact parameters and target, plus independent execution-side authorization |
Ask five questions for every proposed action:
- What is the smallest data set and operation that completes the task?
- Could the call expose information outside the approved audience, spend money, delete or alter data, change privileges, deploy code or create a legal or operational commitment?
- Which user or service is acting, on whose behalf, against which tenant or resource, and until when?
- What if content the agent reads, or a tool description, contains instructions designed to redirect it?
- Can an operator see the action, stop it, revoke its credentials and investigate without putting secrets in logs?
How do I scope an agent’s access precisely?
Turn the answers into an explicit authorization record rather than a natural-language instruction. The record should name the principal, session, audience, target, permitted operation, limits, expiry and approval state.
- Write the task boundary. State the business objective and the resources in scope. “Review invoices in account A for this month” is enforceable; “handle invoices” is not.
- Choose the least powerful operation. Prefer search, read, validate or draft endpoints over endpoints that commit changes. If a write is necessary, constrain fields that may change.
- Bind the target. Require the backend to verify tenant, repository, account, environment, record identifier and audience on every call. Do not rely on an intermediary agent gateway to preserve that context.
- Set limits. Add time expiry, maximum records, monetary ceilings, rate limits, allowed file types, approved destinations and environment restrictions.
- Separate identities. Use a read-only identity for discovery and a different, tightly scoped identity for an approved write. Avoid inheriting a developer’s broad personal credentials.
- Test negative cases. Confirm that a call for another tenant, session, target, operation or expired token is rejected at the execution service.
Per-tool scopes and explicit authorization are emphasized by OWASP’s agent guidance. OWASP’s prompt-injection guidance also calls for session- and permission-bound validation and parameter checks, so the model’s selected arguments never become authority by themselves.
What identity and credentials should an AI agent use?
Give the agent a distinct, auditable identity and bind each action to the initiating user or service, session, audience and target. Issue short-lived, narrowly scoped credentials and revoke elevated rights when the task ends.
An agent acting with a developer’s long-lived token can silently inherit repository administration, production access or billing authority that the task never needed. A separate identity makes ownership and investigation clearer and allows read-only and write-capable roles to be separated.
- Actor: record the agent identity and the human or service that initiated the task.
- Delegation: represent that the agent is acting on behalf of that principal, not as an anonymous automation account.
- Audience and target: reject tokens issued for another service, tenant, environment or resource.
- Lifetime: use an expiry measured in the task’s required window; do not leave elevated access active after completion.
- Revocation: provide an operator control that invalidates the credential and stops queued work.
NIST NCCoE’s February 2026 concept paper identifies authentication, authorization, delegation and auditing as active design questions. CISA and partner guidance likewise connects least privilege with identity management, oversight and accountability.

When should an AI agent ask for human approval?
Require fresh approval whenever an operation can create a material external effect or is difficult to undo. The approval must show the exact action, parameters and target, and a separate execution component must verify that the approved request is the one being carried out.
Approve the exact operation, not a general intention
A useful approval screen identifies the recipient, records, amount, environment, code revision, permissions or deletion set involved. “Approve email” is too vague; “send this message to these 184 external addresses with these attachments” gives the reviewer something meaningful to check.
Keep low-risk work bounded to avoid approval fatigue
Allow routine, low-impact operations to proceed within explicit limits. Reserve interruptions for actions such as external sending, deletion, payment, privilege changes and production deployment. OWASP guidance warns that approval prompts alone are not a security boundary against a manipulated agent; isolation and backend checks remain necessary.
Use independent execution-side verification
The component that performs the action should re-check the caller, session, target, parameters, expiry and approval record. It should reject a request if any value differs from what the person approved, even if the model claims the change is harmless.

Assume that web pages, documents, email, retrieved text and tool metadata may contain hostile instructions or may have been compromised. Treat their content as data, not as an authority to expand access.
- Validate at the backend. Enforce operation, target, schema, identity and parameter checks in the service that executes the call.
- Pin or review schemas. Inspect tool definitions and detect unexpected changes; do not let a description silently add a dangerous capability.
- Use allowlists. Restrict domains, repositories, commands, file paths, recipients and API methods to approved values.
- Isolate execution. Run untrusted processing in a sandbox with a constrained filesystem, minimal host access and no inherited secrets.
- Control egress. Permit network connections only to required destinations, and block arbitrary uploads or callback channels.
- Reduce blast radius. Even if an indirect injection succeeds, narrow scopes, short expiry and separate identities limit what the agent can do.
OWASP’s DevSecOps, LLMSVS and MCP security guidance all emphasize isolation, controlled egress, schema or argument validation and monitoring. The practical rule is simple: a prompt, a retrieved instruction or the model’s confidence can request an action, but none of them can authorize it.

What should the execution architecture look like?
Put policy enforcement between the model and every consequential tool. A robust flow separates planning, approval and execution.
- Receive a user request. Authenticate the user and establish the tenant, session, target environment and business purpose.
- Plan with read-only capabilities. Let the agent gather only the approved information and produce a proposed operation.
- Normalize and validate. Convert the proposal into a typed command; reject unknown fields, unsafe values, out-of-scope targets and excessive quantities.
- Classify impact. Apply policy to determine whether the command is allowed, requires approval or must be denied.
- Obtain approval when required. Create a record containing the exact parameters, target, approving principal, time and expiry.
- Mint or activate scoped credentials. Give the execution service only the capability needed for this command.
- Re-check at execution. Independently verify identity, delegation, audience, session, target, limits, approval and credential freshness.
- Execute in a contained environment. Apply sandbox and egress controls, then return a structured result.
- Record and close. Log security-relevant metadata, revoke temporary authority and expose a stop or rollback path where one exists.
This design prevents a model-side decision from becoming an unchecked side effect. It also makes a failed authorization test observable and repeatable.
What should I log, monitor and be able to stop?
Keep an audit trail sufficient to reconstruct who requested an action, what the agent attempted, what was approved, what executed and what happened. Do not turn the audit trail into a second data leak.
- Agent identity, initiating user or service, session and tenant
- Tool, operation, target resource and relevant parameter hashes or redacted values
- Credential or authorization decision, approval identity and approval time
- Start, completion, denial, timeout and error outcomes
- Policy version, tool-schema version and execution environment
- Reason for revocation, interruption or rollback
Keep credentials, access tokens, private keys and unnecessary prompt or response content out of logs. Redact sensitive fields while preserving enough metadata for investigation. Monitor for unusual destinations, repeated denials, rapid scope changes, excessive volume, cross-tenant attempts and actions outside normal hours or environments.
Provide a reliable pause control that prevents new calls, cancel queued work, revoke active credentials and alert an operator. Test it under load; a stop button that only changes the user interface is not a containment mechanism.
How should I compare agent platforms or internal designs?
Compare enforceable controls at the execution boundary, not marketing claims about autonomy or safety. The following axes expose meaningful differences.

Reusing a developer’s credentials
Problem: the agent inherits broad access and its actions are hard to attribute. Fix: create separate agent identities, use read-only roles for discovery and issue write authority only for an approved operation.
Trusting prompts or model confidence
Problem: instructions such as “you are authorized” can influence the model but cannot enforce a security boundary. Fix: authorize and validate in the application and tool-execution path.
Allowing an agent gateway to stand in for authorization
Problem: a gateway may forward a call without proving which user, session, tenant or target authorized it, creating a confused-deputy or cross-session flaw. Fix: bind and verify those attributes at the backend on every call.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsGiving approval without parameter integrity
Problem: a person approves one recipient, amount or deployment, while the agent executes another. Fix: display complete parameters and have the executor compare them byte-for-byte or through a canonical representation with the approval record.
Logging everything
Problem: prompts, responses and tool payloads may contain secrets or regulated data. Fix: log security metadata, redact sensitive values and define retention and access controls.
Best Value
Ignoring tool and content changes
Problem: a poisoned document or altered tool schema can redirect behavior. Fix: pin schemas where practical, review changes, minimize scopes and isolate the runtime.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI agent safely access confidential documents in read-only mode?
Read-only access reduces the chance of alteration but does not prevent disclosure. Limit the document set and output destinations, scan or filter generated summaries, and prevent the agent from forwarding content to unapproved services.
How long should an agent’s elevated permission last?
Set the expiry to the shortest window that covers the specific operation, often a single workflow or approval. Revoke it immediately after completion and require a new authorization for a later task rather than extending the old token.
Should a human approve every tool call an agent makes?
No. Approving every low-risk read creates fatigue and encourages unsafe blanket approvals. Permit bounded routine operations automatically, while reserving fresh, parameter-specific approval for external, financial, destructive, privilege-changing or production actions.
What is the fastest way to test whether an agent authorization design is real?
Run negative tests at the execution API: alter the tenant, target, recipient, amount, operation, session or expiry after planning and approval. Each modified request should be rejected and logged, even when the model or gateway says it is allowed.
