The best VPS for OpenClaw is not a particular brand or plan. It is a Linux virtual machine in a suitable region, with persistent storage, a recovery-capable backup system, enough headroom for your channels and automations, and an administration path that does not expose the Gateway unnecessarily. OpenClaw’s own server guide lists several viable providers but does not rank them or publish a universal CPU, RAM, price, reliability, or country-by-country winner.

Choose the deployment model first, then compare providers on runtime compatibility, storage persistence, backup and restore controls, network access, region, and the amount of Linux maintenance you can handle. Keep the Gateway on loopback by default and reach it through an SSH tunnel or Tailscale Serve. Treat the VPS as the authoritative home of OpenClaw’s state and workspace, and prove that you can restore them before relying on the instance.

What should you decide before comparing VPS plans?

Define how OpenClaw will be used before looking at a price list. A Gateway that handles text messages for one person has a different operating profile from one that runs browser automation, media processing, several channels, or agents for a team. The official documentation does not give one RAM or CPU minimum that covers every combination, so a plan copied from someone else may be either wasteful or inadequate.

Identify the deployment model

OpenClaw documents running its Gateway on a Linux server or cloud VPS. That model gives you a persistent machine you control, while the Gateway keeps its own state and workspace there. You can use a conventional virtual machine, a VM with Docker, or another provider-supported Linux arrangement, but confirm that the selected service gives you a real, persistent Linux environment rather than a short-lived container or function.

List the work the Gateway will perform

Write down the channels, scheduled jobs, browser sessions, media tasks, and agent workloads you expect. Note which tasks can run concurrently and which must remain available around the clock. This list is more useful than choosing a VPS from a headline “minimum,” because the available documentation does not establish a universal specification for every workload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set your operational boundary

Decide whether you are comfortable patching Linux, securing SSH, reading service logs, restoring files, and responding when a process stops. A low-cost VM can still demand substantial administration. If you want less host maintenance, look for a service with clear snapshot, backup, console, and recovery controls; do not assume that a managed label includes application-level backups for OpenClaw’s state.

Which VPS providers can host OpenClaw?

OpenClaw’s Linux server guide lists DigitalOcean, Hetzner, Fly.io, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Oracle Cloud, Amazon Web Services, and other managed or self-hosted paths. That list means these are documented deployment possibilities, not a ranking. The guide does not supply an apples-to-apples comparison of their current prices, regions, support, uptime commitments, or backup terms.

Deployment option named by OpenClaw What the official material establishes What you must verify before buying
DigitalOcean Listed as a possible Linux server or cloud VPS path. Current regional price, included CPU and memory, persistent-disk behavior, snapshots or backups, restore workflow, console access, and billing terms.
Hetzner Listed as a possible Linux server or cloud VPS path. Availability in your required region, storage durability, backup controls, support process, and network policy.
Fly.io Listed among possible deployment paths. How persistent volumes, machine restarts, regional placement, and operational tooling fit a Gateway that owns durable state.
Google Cloud Listed as a possible cloud deployment. VM pricing and egress, disk snapshots, identity and firewall configuration, region, and the skills needed to operate the account.
Microsoft Azure Listed as a possible cloud deployment. VM and disk costs, backup and restore products, region, access controls, and the complexity of the surrounding account.
Oracle Cloud Listed as a possible cloud deployment. Current capacity and eligibility for any discounted or free allocation, persistent storage, support, and recovery controls.
Amazon Web Services Listed with EC2, Lightsail, and a free-tier path among possible options. Current free-tier eligibility, instance and storage charges, data-transfer costs, region, snapshots, and account-level security.

Provider documentation changes frequently, particularly for free allocations, regional inventory, and promotional billing. Check the provider’s current primary pricing and product pages immediately before ordering. A provider should win because its current terms and operating model fit your workload, not because it appears first in a project guide.

How much CPU, RAM, and storage does an OpenClaw VPS need?

There is no documented universal VPS size for OpenClaw. Size the machine from the work you will run, then leave enough headroom for updates, temporary files, and short bursts instead of treating one number as a guarantee.

Use the supported runtime as a hard prerequisite

The installation overview lists Node 24.16 or newer, or Node 26.1 or newer, and recommends Node 26. Confirm the distribution image and package repositories can supply a supported version. Record the exact Node version in your deployment notes so a later rebuild does not silently install an older runtime.

Do not misread the Docker memory figure

The Docker documentation’s 6 GB RAM figure applies to building a local source image. It is not a general minimum for running the Gateway on every VPS. A prebuilt image avoids that local source-build requirement, although the running workload still needs memory for Node, OpenClaw, browser processes, media handling, and any other services you place on the VM.

Estimate capacity by workload

  • Light, single-user automation: prioritize a supported runtime, reliable disk, and recovery controls. Start conservatively and watch memory and CPU during the busiest scheduled task.
  • Browser or media-heavy work: allow additional memory and CPU for the helper processes. Measure peak usage while those tasks run rather than sizing from an idle Gateway.
  • Several channels or agents: account for simultaneous sessions, queues, and logs. Keep free disk space for workspaces, temporary artifacts, and upgrades.
  • Team operation: plan a dedicated runtime and decide whether users with adversarial trust relationships need separate Gateways, hosts, or operating-system users.

Storage is part of capacity, not an afterthought. The Gateway’s state and workspace live on the VPS in the documented cloud model. Compare persistent-disk type, expansion procedure, snapshot support, and the consequences of a VM replacement. A plan with ample RAM but ephemeral or difficult-to-restore storage is a poor fit for a durable Gateway.

How should you compare persistence, backups, and recovery?

OpenClaw says to treat the VPS as the source of truth and to back up state and workspace regularly. That instruction makes recovery capability a selection criterion, not an optional add-on.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check what “backup” actually means

Separate provider-level VM snapshots from application-aware copies of OpenClaw’s state and workspace. Ask whether backups are automatic or manual, where they are stored, how long they are retained, whether they are in a separate failure domain, and whether restoring requires rebuilding the entire VM. If a plan offers only a snapshot, determine whether it captures the files and configuration you need at a usable point in time.

Define a recovery target

Choose how much recent work you can afford to lose and how long the Gateway may be unavailable. That recovery-point and recovery-time decision determines how often you copy data and whether you need a standby VM or merely a documented rebuild. The documentation says to back up regularly but does not prescribe an interval; set one that matches your own tolerance.

Perform a restore drill

  1. Provision a temporary VM in the same region or an approved recovery region.
  2. Install the supported Node runtime or deploy the selected prebuilt container image.
  3. Restore a copy of the OpenClaw state and workspace without overwriting the production host.
  4. Start the Gateway, verify its configuration, workspace files, scheduled jobs, and channel connections, then record any manual steps.
  5. Destroy the temporary VM and store the recovery notes with the backup procedure.

A backup that has never been restored is an assumption. Repeat the drill after major configuration changes and whenever you switch providers or storage types.

How do you access an OpenClaw VPS securely?

OpenClaw’s secure default is to keep the Gateway on loopback and reach it through an SSH tunnel or Tailscale Serve. This keeps the control interface off the public network while still allowing you to administer it remotely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Secure the host administration path first

  • Use the provider’s console to create a non-root administrative account, install your SSH key, and disable password login when your recovery plan permits it.
  • Apply operating-system security updates and restrict inbound firewall rules to the ports and source networks you actually need.
  • Keep the provider console, account identity controls, and billing account protected with strong authentication and separate recovery methods.
  • Document how to reach the VM if the normal SSH path fails; a console or out-of-band recovery option can be more valuable than a small price difference.

Keep the Gateway private by default

With loopback binding, an SSH tunnel forwards a local port on your computer to the Gateway’s local port on the VPS. Tailscale Serve provides another private access pattern for authorized devices. These approaches let you use the dashboard without opening its control endpoint to arbitrary Internet traffic.

Authenticate any broader binding

If you intentionally bind the Gateway to a LAN or tailnet address, configure a shared token or password unless authentication is delegated to a proxy you explicitly trust. Treat a proxy as part of the security boundary: verify which headers it sets, which networks can reach it, and how it handles authentication failures. Do not expose the control interface merely because the VM has a public address.

Review container firewall behavior

For a public-host Docker deployment, the OpenClaw Docker instructions specifically call out the DOCKER-USER firewall chain. Review that chain and the provider’s network firewall together so container-published ports do not bypass the access policy you intended for the host.

What should you compare on a VPS plan?

Use the following checklist while viewing current provider plans. Record the answer for the exact region and billing term you would purchase; “available in the product” is not the same as “included in this plan.”

Comparison axis Questions to answer Why it matters to OpenClaw
Region and latency Is a VM available near you and the services or users it must reach? Are regions interchangeable during recovery? Network distance affects interactive control and channel integrations; a second region can improve recovery options.
CPU and memory How many virtual CPUs and how much RAM are included? Can the plan be resized without replacing the disk? Concurrent browser, media, and agent work can create peaks not visible at idle.
Persistent storage Is the disk persistent through stop, reboot, and VM replacement? Can it be expanded? State and workspace must survive ordinary maintenance and support a predictable restore.
Backups and snapshots Are they included, optional, or manual? Where are copies kept, and how is a restore initiated? Recovery is part of operating the Gateway, not merely a provider feature.
Network controls Can you restrict inbound traffic, create private networking, and retain console access? Private administration and loopback or tailnet access depend on controllable networking.
Runtime and image support Can the image provide Node 24.16+ or 26.1+, or run your selected Docker image? An unsupported runtime can fail before workload sizing becomes relevant.
Billing and limits What recurs monthly, what is metered, and what happens when a promotional or free allowance ends? Unexpected storage, transfer, or address charges can make a seemingly cheap deployment unsuitable.
Operations How are incidents reported, disks replaced, and accounts recovered? Is there a usable support channel? You remain responsible for the Gateway even when the provider operates the underlying hardware.

How do you deploy OpenClaw on the chosen VPS?

The exact provider screens differ, but the sequence below keeps the important decisions in the right order. Follow OpenClaw’s current installation instructions for the package or container commands; do not substitute an unsupported runtime because an image happens to include it.

  1. Select a region and persistent disk. Choose the nearest suitable region, confirm disk persistence, and enable the provider backup or snapshot option you intend to use.
  2. Create the Linux VM. Use an officially supported distribution image, add your SSH key, create a non-root administrator, and restrict the initial firewall rules.
  3. Install the runtime. Provide Node 24.16+ or 26.1+ as documented, preferably Node 26, or use the OpenClaw Docker path. Record the installed version.
  4. Install and configure the Gateway. Keep configuration, state, and workspace on the persistent disk. Avoid placing them in a temporary filesystem or an untracked container layer.
  5. Apply the private access pattern. Bind the Gateway to loopback and use an SSH tunnel or Tailscale Serve. If you must bind beyond loopback, configure the required token or password and enforce the network policy.
  6. Test the real workload. Send representative messages, run scheduled jobs, and exercise browser or media tasks if they are part of your plan. Observe peak memory, CPU, disk, and logs.
  7. Create and verify backups. Copy the state and workspace, then restore them to a temporary environment and confirm the Gateway behaves as expected.
  8. Write the runbook. Record provider region, VM size, runtime version, access method, backup location, restore steps, and the person responsible for each action.

Which VPS approach fits common OpenClaw scenarios?

One person, mostly text-based automation

Favor a small persistent Linux VM with straightforward SSH access, reliable disk, and simple backups. Spend more effort on private access and recovery than on chasing the lowest advertised price. Increase resources only after observing a real workload peak.

Browser, media, or bursty agent workloads

Choose a plan that can be resized and has enough memory and CPU headroom for helper processes. Verify that temporary files and browser profiles reside on storage that survives restarts, and test during the heaviest concurrent operation you expect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Multiple users with different trust levels

Do not assume one shared Gateway is an adequate security boundary. OpenClaw recommends a dedicated runtime for a team instance and says users with adversarial trust relationships should be separated by Gateway, host, or operating-system user. Select a provider and account structure that makes that separation practical.

Budget-sensitive or trial deployment

A free or promotional allocation can be useful for learning, but its eligibility, capacity, region, and renewal terms may change. Keep independent backups, avoid treating a trial VM as your only production copy, and calculate the normal recurring cost before moving important channels to it.

What mistakes make a VPS a poor OpenClaw host?

  • Choosing by advertised RAM alone: memory does not describe browser processes, media tasks, disk speed, or recovery controls.
  • Treating the Docker build figure as a runtime minimum: the documented 6 GB applies to a local source-image build, not every running Gateway.
  • Using ephemeral storage: a replacement or redeploy can erase the state and workspace that make the Gateway useful.
  • Opening the dashboard to the Internet: public reachability is not required for normal remote administration and increases the attack surface.
  • Skipping restore tests: a successful backup job does not prove that configuration, credentials, and workspace can be recovered together.
  • Ignoring geography and billing: a plan that is inexpensive in one region or during one promotion may have different availability or recurring charges elsewhere.
  • Combining untrusted users on one runtime: separate the Gateway, host, or OS user when trust relationships require a stronger boundary.

What is the final VPS selection checklist?

Before committing, answer every item with a documented, current provider detail:

  • Does the service provide a persistent Linux VM or an equivalent durable environment?
  • Can it supply Node 24.16+ or 26.1+, preferably Node 26, or run the intended OpenClaw container image?
  • Does the selected region meet your latency, data-location, and recovery needs?
  • Can you resize CPU, memory, and disk without an unsafe migration?
  • Are state and workspace stored on persistent disk?
  • Can you create, retain, and restore backups, and have you tested the process?
  • Can inbound traffic be restricted while SSH, a tunnel, or a tailnet remains usable?
  • Do you understand recurring VM, disk, transfer, address, and backup charges?
  • Can you maintain the host and respond when the Gateway or provider has an incident?
  • For teams, can you create the separation required by your users’ trust relationships?

If any answer is unknown, the plan is not ready for a production OpenClaw Gateway. Resolve that uncertainty from the provider’s current documentation or choose a service whose controls are easier to verify.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run OpenClaw on a free-tier VPS?

A free-tier path is listed among the possible cloud options, but eligibility, regional capacity, included resources, and expiration rules are provider-specific and can change. Use it for evaluation only until you have confirmed the normal recurring cost and established independent backups.

Do I need to buy a public IPv4 address for OpenClaw?

Not necessarily. Remote administration can use a provider console, an SSH path, or a private tailnet arrangement, while outbound connections handle many integrations. Decide whether you need public inbound access for a specific service rather than adding an address by default.

How often should I back up OpenClaw’s state and workspace?

The documentation requires regular backups but does not set an interval. Choose a schedule from the amount of work you can lose, keep copies outside the VM’s failure domain, and validate the schedule with periodic restore drills.

Is a provider snapshot enough to move OpenClaw to another VPS?

A snapshot may help recreate a VM, but portability depends on whether it includes the Gateway’s complete state, workspace, configuration, and secrets in a usable form. Maintain a documented file-level recovery procedure so you can rebuild on a different provider or region when necessary.
