For international business travel, choose the VPN your employer approves if you’re using a company device or accessing company systems. For personal use, compare a provider’s security features, privacy practices, reliability on travel networks, device support, and the destination country’s rules—not just its advertised speed or server count. A VPN can reduce exposure on untrusted Wi-Fi, but it does not make you anonymous or protect a compromised device. Use it alongside patched software, multifactor authentication, HTTPS, and a trusted hotspot or eSIM when available.

What should a business traveler look for in a VPN?

Start with fit and risk, not a list of features. A personal subscription may be suitable for your own browsing, but it may not satisfy an employer’s security or access requirements. If you handle company data, your organization’s approved VPN or zero-trust client takes priority: a consumer VPN is not a substitute for the access controls, monitoring, or support your employer requires.

For any VPN you are considering, evaluate five areas together:

  • Security: Does it support current, strong cryptography and maintain its software? Does it include a kill switch and protections against DNS or IPv6 leaks?
  • Privacy: What activity or account information does the provider say it logs, shares, or retains? Who owns the service, which jurisdiction applies, and what transparency or independent audit information is available?
  • Travel reliability: Can you recover when hotel or conference Wi-Fi requires a browser-based login? Does the connection reconnect reliably on congested networks? Are any alternative connection methods lawful at your destination?
  • Operational fit: Does the client work on your operating systems and devices? For a team, are device administration, single sign-on, and other required management controls available?
  • Policy and licensing: Is the service allowed by your employer and at your destination? Check current plan limits, support, and licensing terms directly with the provider rather than relying on an old price or connection limit.

These questions matter because a VPN changes who handles your traffic: instead of relying only on the local network, you route traffic through the VPN provider’s servers. The Federal Trade Commission warns that a VPN app may be able to intercept traffic, may not encrypt everything, and may share data. Read its privacy and security terms as carefully as you would those of any service you trust with your connection.

Should I use a company VPN or a personal VPN overseas?

If you are working on an employer-managed device or accessing company resources, use the VPN or secure-access client your employer specifies. A personal VPN may not grant access to company systems, may conflict with required routing or monitoring, and may leave IT unable to troubleshoot a connection problem.

Ask your IT or security team before departure which client to install, whether it must be connected for specific work, and what to do if it fails. Canadian government travel guidance also notes that company-managed devices may require an approved corporate client. Employer policy is the deciding factor for company work; do not install a second VPN to get around a failed or restricted corporate connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A personal VPN is a separate choice for personal devices and activity, subject to local law and any applicable workplace rules. It is not a replacement for your employer’s approved controls. A company VPN and a personal VPN can also have different purposes: one provides authorized access to organizational systems, while the other routes personal device traffic through a provider’s service. Do not assume either one offers the other’s protections or access.

How do I compare VPN security and privacy?

Look for specific, verifiable answers rather than broad promises such as “military-grade security” or “zero logs.” Security depends on both the provider’s capabilities and how the app is configured on your device; privacy depends on what the provider can observe, records, and shares.

Check the security controls

  • Cryptography and protocols: Confirm that the service supports modern protocols and strong cryptography. If the provider does not explain what it uses or how it maintains the software, treat that as a reason to ask for clarification.
  • Kill switch: Find out what happens if the VPN connection drops. A kill switch is intended to stop traffic from continuing outside the tunnel, but you should test its behavior on your own device before relying on it.
  • Leak handling: Check whether the app addresses DNS and IPv6 leaks, and test its behavior before travel. Do not assume that seeing a VPN-connected status means every kind of traffic is protected.
  • Updates: Verify that the client is supported and receives updates for the operating systems you use. A VPN cannot compensate for an unpatched operating system, browser, or endpoint-protection tool.

Read the privacy disclosures

Look for clear statements about connection and activity data, retention, sharing, ownership, and the jurisdiction that applies to the provider. Check whether the provider publishes transparency information or independent audit findings, and read what those findings actually cover. An audit or a “no logs” label is not a blanket guarantee that no information is collected or disclosed.

Remember the trust trade-off: the VPN can reduce what an untrusted local Wi-Fi operator can learn from your connection, but it places more trust in the VPN provider. The FTC cautions that VPN apps can potentially intercept traffic, may leave some traffic unencrypted, and may share data. A VPN therefore does not make you anonymous, and you should not treat a privacy slogan as proof that the provider cannot see or retain information.

Will a VPN work on hotel, airport, or conference Wi-Fi?

Often it can, but captive portals and unreliable networks can interrupt setup. A captive portal is the sign-in or acceptance page that some hotels, airports, and conference networks show before allowing internet access. If a VPN forces all traffic through its tunnel immediately, your device may not reach that login page until you complete the network’s access steps.

Test the actual combination of device, VPN client, and travel network where possible before you depend on it. Confirm that you know how to disconnect or pause the VPN temporarily for the portal, complete the network login, and reconnect afterward—provided that procedure is permitted by your employer. The UK National Cyber Security Centre notes that forced VPN routing can complicate captive-portal login.

Expect performance and reconnection to vary with the network. Hotel or conference Wi-Fi can be congested or unstable, and the VPN adds another service between your device and the destination. A provider’s advertised speed or number of locations does not establish how it will perform on a particular travel network. Test reconnection and essential work applications before the trip; if the connection fails, use your organization’s approved fallback or contact IT rather than installing an unapproved replacement.

Is split tunneling a good idea when traveling?

Split tunneling sends some traffic through the VPN while allowing other traffic to use the local connection directly. That can change which apps or destinations receive the VPN’s protection, so it should not be treated as a simple speed setting on a work device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The NCSC warns that enabling split tunneling increases the risk that sensitive data will be exposed to an unprotected network. For business travel, follow your employer’s configuration and do not change split-tunneling settings to work around a connection problem. If you are choosing a personal VPN, understand which traffic is excluded and why before enabling the feature; do not assume that an active VPN protects apps or traffic that bypass it.

How do I prepare and test a VPN before departure?

Set it up while you have dependable internet and access to your organization’s support—not for the first time from an airport queue. This sequence reduces the chance that an outdated device, untested login, or portal issue leaves you without a workable connection.

  1. Confirm approval and destination rules. Ask your employer which VPN or zero-trust client is required for work and what fallback to use. Check current government travel advice for the destination, because some countries regulate VPN use or encryption.
  2. Patch the devices you will carry. Update the operating system, browser, VPN client, endpoint-protection software, and device firmware. A VPN does not remove malware or fix vulnerable software.
  3. Secure your account. Enable multifactor authentication (MFA) for VPN and work accounts, and store recovery codes securely. Make sure you can complete authentication if your usual method is unavailable while traveling.
  4. Install the official client. Use the official app store or the provider’s own site, and follow your employer’s instructions for managed devices. Avoid unknown download sites and unapproved replacement clients.
  5. Test the connection controls. Verify that authentication works and check the kill switch, leak handling, and reconnection behavior on your device. A feature’s presence in a settings menu does not tell you how it behaves in your setup.
  6. Practice with a captive portal. Try the steps for connecting to hotel or conference Wi-Fi that presents a sign-in page. Confirm how to complete the login and restore the VPN afterward without changing a company-mandated configuration.
  7. Prepare a trusted backup connection. Carry a personal hotspot or eSIM if practical, and disable automatic connection to open Wi-Fi networks. CISA advises confirming the network and its login procedure, avoiding sensitive activity on unsecured hotspots, and preferring a personal hotspot where possible.
  8. Keep safe work habits. Use HTTPS, and avoid sensitive work on unsecured networks when trusted connectivity is available. A VPN is one layer, not a replacement for device security or careful handling of company information.

What should I do if the VPN fails abroad?

Do not respond to a failed connection by installing a random VPN app or changing employer-managed settings. A broken tunnel can be a routine network or login problem, but an unapproved workaround may violate policy or expose company data.

  1. Check that you are connected to the intended Wi-Fi network and have completed its captive-portal login.
  2. Follow your employer’s documented recovery steps, including any approved way to reconnect or switch networks.
  3. If company access still fails, use the organization’s approved fallback—such as a trusted hotspot if permitted—and contact IT through its established support channel.
  4. Do not continue sensitive work over an unsecured connection while waiting for a fix. If you cannot restore an approved secure connection, pause that work until you can.

If the affected VPN is personal, consult its official support instructions and check whether the destination’s rules or the network itself may restrict its use. Do not try to evade local law or employer policy by switching to an unapproved transport method.

What can a VPN not protect?

A VPN reduces some exposure associated with untrusted Wi-Fi; it does not secure everything that happens on a device. It does not remove malware, stop phishing, patch vulnerabilities, guarantee anonymity, or guarantee that you can access a company system. Its app may not encrypt all traffic, and the provider may collect or share data under its policies.

Keep the rest of your travel security in place: install updates, use MFA, protect your accounts and recovery methods, prefer trusted connectivity for sensitive work, and follow company policy. CISA’s advice to verify the network and login procedure is useful even when a VPN is installed, because the VPN does not make every Wi-Fi connection safe by itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a VPN replace multifactor authentication while I’m traveling?

No. A VPN protects a network connection in certain ways; MFA adds a separate check when signing in to an account. Use the authentication method your employer requires and prepare a secure recovery option before departure.

Can my employer tell when I use a personal VPN on a work device?

Do not assume personal VPN traffic is invisible to your employer or compatible with device-management rules. Ask your IT team what is allowed on managed devices instead of relying on a personal VPN’s privacy claims.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I install a VPN from a link in a travel email?

Use the official app store or the provider’s own website, and follow your employer’s instructions for managed devices. If an email asks you to install a different client or change work-device settings, verify the request through a trusted IT channel.
