How to Choose a USB-C Charger and Cable for iPhone

Choose an iPhone charger and cable by checking the exact model, connector, USB-PD support and fast-charge requirement. USB 3 cables are for faster data on supported Pro models.

Start by checking your exact iPhone model: iPhone 15 and later use USB-C, while earlier models use Lightning. For wired fast charging, match a compatible USB-C Power Delivery (USB-PD) adapter to the model’s requirements, then choose a cable with the right connectors. A pricier USB 3 cable is useful for faster data transfers on supported Pro models, not as a general charging-speed upgrade.

Check your iPhone’s port and charging target

iPhone 15 and later have a USB-C port; earlier iPhone models have a Lightning port. That tells you which cable end fits the phone, but it does not tell you the adapter wattage needed for the fastest charging. Apple’s model-specific recommendations differ, so identify the phone before buying.

For a third-party wired fast charger, Apple identifies USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) support as the relevant compatibility feature. Check the adapter’s specifications for USB-C output, USB-PD, and the power and protocol required by your model. On a multi-port adapter, check the output available from the port you plan to use.

Match the adapter to the iPhone model

iPhone model Apple’s fast-charge guidance What the claim means
iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max Apple specifies a 60W-capable third-party USB-C adapter using AVS and USB-PD 3.2, paired with the included USB-C cable. Alternatively, Apple names its 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max. Around 50% in around 15 minutes, according to Apple’s September 18, 2026 guidance. Apple’s underlying July 2026 test used preproduction phones; the page’s test note describes wired fast charging with a 60W-capable cable and USB-PD 3.1 or later adapters with AVS. The recommendation and test-note protocol wording differ, so check the current model recommendation rather than assuming every 60W adapter qualifies.
iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max 40W or higher Around 50% in around 20 minutes, according to Apple’s September 2026 page. Apple says its test used preproduction devices in July 2025.
iPhone 17e and iPhone Air 20W or higher Apple says iPhone 17e can reach around 50% in around 30 minutes; its page specifies 20W or higher for iPhone Air. Apple’s test note for the 17e result refers to preproduction units tested in January 2026.
iPhone 15 and earlier models Apple’s general fast-charge page names an 18W-or-greater USB-C adapter or a comparable third-party USB-C PD adapter. Its user guide separately lists a minimum 20W for iPhone 12, iPhone SE (3rd generation) and later, and recommends USB-C output with 9 VDC/2.2 A for a third-party adapter. The guidance uses different thresholds across general and model-specific documents. Use the most specific current requirement for the exact phone instead of applying one wattage to every model.

These are Apple’s stated results and requirements, not guaranteed charge times. Apple says charging time depends on the adapter, settings, usage and environment; fast charging may not work when conditions are too cold or too hot. Its Fast charge your iPhone page has the current model guidance.

Choose the cable by connector and task

For USB-C iPhones

For iPhone 15 and later, use a USB-C-to-USB-C cable with a USB-C wall adapter. Apple says the included cable charges the phone and supports USB 2 data speeds. It is sufficient for ordinary charging and routine syncing.

For Lightning iPhones

For an earlier iPhone, the phone end of the cable must be Lightning. Apple specifies a USB-C-to-Lightning cable for wired fast charging from a USB-C adapter.

For faster wired data transfer

A USB 3 cable is an optional upgrade for data, not a requirement for ordinary charging. Apple lists iPhone 18 Pro, 17 Pro, 16 Pro and 15 Pro models as supporting USB 3.2 Gen 2 transfer speeds up to 10 Gbit/s with an optional USB 3 cable. The iPhone and the transfer task must also support that speed. Apple’s USB-C connector guide explains the supported models and cable distinction.

Do not assume a cable marked “fast” or a more expensive USB 3 or Thunderbolt cable will make charging faster. Charging is also limited by the phone, adapter and conditions. When replacing a cable, compare both connector ends, length, charging rating and—if you transfer large files—the data rating.

Reuse a charger or buy a new one

An existing adapter may be suitable if its port and output match the phone and cable, it supports the needed charging standard, and it is undamaged. Apple says iPhone can use Apple USB power adapters made for iPad and Mac notebooks, as well as third-party adapters that comply with applicable local regulations and international and regional safety standards.

What you are choosing Check before buying or reusing Best fit
Wall adapter USB-C output, USB-PD support for third-party fast charging, model-appropriate power and protocol, and applicable safety compliance. For multi-port models, confirm the output available on the port in use. Choose one that meets the exact iPhone’s desired wired fast-charge tier.
Charging cable Connector at both ends, USB-C compliance where applicable, length, charging rating and data rating if needed. A standard charging cable for power and routine syncing; USB 3 for supported high-speed data work.
Existing charger Port type, output label, compatibility and physical condition. Reuse it when compatible and undamaged; a higher-wattage Apple or compatible adapter can charge an iPhone.

Apple’s iPhone power-adapter guide gives its adapter examples and output guidance. For older models, its general fast-charge page and user guide state different thresholds; check the model-specific requirement rather than treating 20W as the fastest choice for every iPhone.

Check safety and compatibility

  • Check the maker’s specifications and applicable local safety markings; a USB-C-shaped plug alone does not establish safety, compliance or performance.
  • Apple says third-party cables and adapters should comply with USB 2.0 or later and applicable country regulations and international and regional safety standards.
  • Stop using a frayed cable or an adapter with damaged prongs, moisture exposure or a damaged enclosure. Apple warns that damaged equipment or charging when moisture is present can cause fire, electric shock, injury or property damage.
  • Keep the phone and charging equipment in a well-ventilated area and away from moisture.
  • If an accessory is followed by slower Wi-Fi or mobile-data performance, disconnect it or try another cable. Apple notes that some third-party USB-C accessories can interfere with wireless connections.
