Choose a mobile carrier by checking coverage where you use your phone, matching a plan to your needs and budget, confirming your handset works on the new network, and understanding the costs and number-transfer steps before you switch. The right choice depends on your location and usage; no carrier is best for everyone.
Compare coverage where you actually use your phone
Start with your home, workplace, regular routes, and places you visit often. Check each prospective provider’s coverage map or a local regulator’s comparison tool. A map is a prediction, not a guarantee of reception indoors or at every spot. Ireland’s ComReg, for example, provides predicted outdoor coverage by address or Eircode; in Australia, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) cautions that “Not all providers offer the same coverage.” ComReg coverage map; ACCC mobile phone guidance.

If possible, ask people who use the network in your regular locations about their experience. Treat this as a useful local check, not a substitute for verifying the provider’s coverage information.
Choose a plan that fits your use and total cost
Estimate your usual data, call, and text needs, then compare allowances and the full cost of each plan. Consider whether prepaid, SIM-only, or a contract plan suits your preferences. A low advertised monthly price may not tell you the whole cost: check one-time charges, contract length, and any charges you could owe for leaving your current provider. ComReg points Irish consumers to a price-plan comparison tool, while the ACCC identifies data use and plan choice as relevant considerations. Check your phone before ordering a SIM
Confirm that your handset is unlocked, then ask the prospective provider to verify support for your exact phone model. Unlocking allows a phone to be used with another operator when the device is otherwise compatible, but being unlocked does not establish that it supports every provider’s network or service. French public guidance explains that unlocking can let customers keep a handset when changing operator; Ofcom notes that switching to a SIM-only deal may require a new SIM. French government guidance on unlocking a mobile phone; Ofcom guidance on switching mobile provider.
Decide between a physical SIM and eSIM
A physical SIM is a card supplied by the operator; an eSIM is activated through the provider’s procedure. Before choosing either, confirm that both your phone and the new provider support that option, and follow the provider’s activation instructions. Availability and setup vary by device and provider. Check how number porting works in your country
Keeping your number when changing providers is possible in many places, but the process, eligibility, timing, and geographic scope differ. Follow the current instructions from your local regulator and new provider. Where local guidance says the number must remain active during the transfer, do not cancel the old service first.
