The best text-message AI agent is the one that matches your exact task and data tolerance. Start by deciding whether you need drafting, reminders, appointment scheduling, outbound calls, or business support. Then compare where processing occurs, who can read conversations, how long data is retained, what approvals are required for consequential actions, and whether you are paying a subscription, per agent, per message, per minute, or carrier charges. A drafting tool such as Google Messages Magic Compose is not an autonomous SMS agent; services such as Xhuman and Lisa support two-way task conversations, while Message AI targets business questions, classification, and summaries. Price only becomes meaningful after you estimate your monthly messages or minutes and add any phone-number, provider, and carrier fees.
What should you compare before choosing a text-message AI agent?
Use five comparison axes in this order: task coverage, privacy architecture, safety controls, cost units, and channel fit. A service can be excellent on one axis and unsuitable on another, so do not select an agent from a monthly price alone.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Task coverage: Identify whether the service only drafts text, sends reminders and briefings, schedules appointments, makes outbound calls, or handles business support workflows.
- Privacy architecture: Check for on-device versus cloud processing, employee or contractor access, service providers, persistent memory, retention and deletion rules, and any model-training statement.
- Safety and control: Look for human approval gates, escalation to a person, audit logs, configurable limits, and identity checks before an action is taken.
- Cost model: Separate subscriptions, per-agent fees, per-message or per-minute metering, phone-number fees, third-party provider charges, and carrier message or data rates.
- Channel fit: Confirm whether the agent uses ordinary SMS, iMessage, Google Messages, a web inbox, chat, or voice; whether it can send outbound messages; and whether your device, number, and country are supported.
This order prevents a common mistake: choosing a private drafting feature when you actually need scheduling, or choosing a capable cloud agent before deciding whether its data practices are acceptable.
Which text-message AI agents support the tasks you need?
The products in the available evidence occupy different categories. The table below shows the documented scope rather than treating every AI feature as a general-purpose agent.
#1 Best Overall
| Service or feature | Documented channel and tasks | What it is not documented to do |
|---|---|---|
| Xhuman | Two-way SMS conversations with an AI agent, account notifications about meetings or tasks, and an optional daily briefing. | Its terms do not establish appointment booking, outbound calling, or business classification. |
| Lisa | Replies, confirmations, reminders, summaries, conversational task handling, appointment and reservation updates, and outbound calls for information gathering, scheduling, and reservations. | It should not be treated as a silent human operator: its help information says it identifies itself as AI. |
| June | Messaging assistance with an assisted-plan human-in-the-loop model. | The available policy does not define a full autonomous scheduling or calling feature set. |
| Badland | Text conversations used to respond and maintain persistent memory. | The cited policy does not specify a broader scheduling, reservation, or outbound-call scope. |
| Message AI | Business task agents that answer product questions, classify incoming requests, and summarize conversations. | It is not presented as a consumer personal assistant for general SMS errands. |
| Google Cloud Agent Assist | Metered chat assistance with feature bundles such as summarization, knowledge assist, and sentiment analysis. | It is an enterprise implementation component, not a ready-to-use personal SMS number. |
| Google Messages Magic Compose | Experimental drafting and rewriting of replies in Google Messages. | It is not a general autonomous SMS agent and does not independently schedule or perform tasks. |
When is a drafting feature enough?
Choose a drafting feature when you want help wording a reply but will review and send every message yourself. Google says Magic Compose suggestions on supported devices are generated by Gemini Nano on-device, using the previous 20 messages for context; that makes it a useful privacy benchmark, but its scope remains drafting and rewriting.
When do you need a task agent?
Choose a task agent when you expect the system to maintain a conversation, send confirmations or reminders, gather information, schedule an appointment, or perform another action on your behalf. Verify exactly which actions are available rather than inferring them from the word “assistant.”
How do the personal SMS assistants differ?
Personal services differ most in the actions they advertise and in how they handle consent, identity, and human access.
What does Xhuman do?
Xhuman’s SMS terms describe sending text messages to an agent to ask questions and take actions. The documented program also sends account notifications, such as alerts about a meeting or task that needs attention, and can provide an optional daily briefing. You need a signed-in account and a verified mobile number. Replying STOP opts out of the program.
What does Lisa do?
Lisa’s messaging policy covers account notices, confirmations, appointment and reservation updates, summaries, and conversational replies for requested tasks. Its help information says Lisa can answer calls and texts, place outbound calls to gather information, schedule, and make reservations. It identifies itself as AI and supports STOP and HELP controls. Carrier message and data rates may apply, and unrelated marketing requires separate consent rather than being implied by a requested task.
What should June users know about human review?
June is a reminder that “AI assistant” does not necessarily mean an employee-free service. Its privacy policy says that on assisted plans, authorized team members may read requests; conversations are also stored and processed by AI systems and service providers. If your messages contain confidential material, determine whether your plan is assisted before enrolling.

Badland says it collects your phone number, name, optional email address, and messages. It uses messages to respond and maintain persistent memory, stores data on encrypted servers, and says it removes data within 30 days after an opt-out or deletion request. Persistent memory can make an assistant more useful over time, but it also increases the importance of understanding what is remembered and how deletion is confirmed.

What can a business text-message agent do?
Business agents are usually narrower and more controllable than personal assistants. Message AI describes focused agents for answering product questions, classifying incoming requests, and summarizing conversations. That focus can be an advantage: a product-support agent has a smaller permission set and a clearer success condition than an assistant asked to do everything.
How does Message control consequential actions?
Message’s AI code of conduct requires the system to stay within the hired workspace. It cannot issue refunds or take other monetary actions without human approval. Customers can configure escalation to a person, and interactions are logged with action and classifier information, creating an audit trail for review.
What is the difference between Message plan prices?
| Message item | Published price | Billing unit and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Chat | $5/month | Workspace or agent-plan price. |
| Tickets | $5/month | Workspace or agent-plan price. |
| Support | $10/month | Workspace or agent-plan price. |
| Business | $15/month | Workspace or agent-plan price. |
| Additional task agent | $5/month each | One task agent is included; each additional task agent is charged separately. |
Messaging and third-party provider charges can be separate from these plan prices. Treat the figures as software-plan costs, not as an all-in monthly SMS bill.
Where does Google Cloud Agent Assist fit?
Google Cloud Agent Assist is a metered enterprise component. For customers onboarded on or after March 6, 2026, current listed rates are $0.002 per standard chat message and $0.003 per enterprise chat message. Voice SKUs are priced per minute, and feature bundles can include summarization, knowledge assist, and sentiment analysis. These are infrastructure rates for an implementation, not a consumer subscription that gives you a ready-made texting number.
How private is a text-message AI agent?
Privacy is a product feature, not a checkbox. The critical distinction is whether content stays on your device or is sent to a cloud service, and who can access it after it arrives.
| Privacy question | Documented example | Why it changes your choice |
|---|---|---|
| Is processing on-device? | Google says Magic Compose suggestions on supported devices are processed by Gemini Nano on-device and that messages are not sent to Google for that suggestion function. | On-device processing limits transmission for that feature, but it does not make the feature an autonomous agent. |
| Can people read conversations? | June says authorized team members may read conversations on assisted plans. | Human review may improve task completion while exposing content to staff. |
| Are service providers involved? | June says conversations are stored and processed by AI systems and service providers. | You need to know which parties receive data and under what terms. |
| Is persistent memory enabled? | Badland says messages are used to maintain persistent memory. | Memory can improve continuity but retains personal context beyond a single exchange. |
| Is deletion documented? | Badland says data is removed within 30 days after an opt-out or deletion request. | A stated deadline is more useful than an unspecified promise; other services may use different rules. |
| Is model training addressed? | The cited policies do not provide a single uniform training rule across services. | Ask the provider directly before sending proprietary or regulated information. |
What should you ask before sharing sensitive information?
- Does the message leave the phone, and which cloud systems process it?
- Can employees, contractors, or support personnel read it?
- Which service providers receive the content or metadata?
- Is persistent memory on by default, and can you turn it off?
- How long are messages, logs, and action records retained?
- What is the documented deletion process and deadline?
- Is content used to train or improve models?
- Which actions require a human approval?
Do not assume that encryption, an opt-out command, or an AI label answers all eight questions. They address different parts of the data lifecycle.
What safety controls should an AI texting service have?
Look for controls that limit what the agent can do, make uncertainty visible, and provide a human fallback.

Approval gates
Payments, refunds, account changes, and other consequential actions should require explicit human approval. Message’s policy provides a concrete example by prohibiting monetary actions without approval.
Escalation
A configurable escalation path lets the agent hand a conversation to a person when it cannot answer, detects a sensitive request, or reaches a permission boundary. Ask whether escalation is automatic, user-triggered, or limited to particular plans.
Identity checks
Scheduling and account tasks can expose private information or change reservations. Verify how the service authenticates the sender, whether a verified mobile number is required, and whether additional confirmation is requested before an action.
Audit logs
Logs should show the user message, the action proposed or taken, and the classifier or rule that triggered it. Message says its interactions and actions are logged with action and classifier information; this is especially valuable for business support and compliance reviews.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsClear AI disclosure
People should know when they are interacting with software. Message’s code says the AI must identify itself as AI when an end user asks, and Lisa’s help information says it identifies itself as AI. Disclosure is separate from accuracy, but it prevents a misleading human-impression.
How much does a text-message AI agent cost?
Prices are not interchangeable because they measure different things. A $5 monthly task-agent fee, a fraction-of-a-cent message rate, and carrier charges can all appear on the same project but belong to different billing layers.
| Cost model | Published example | What to include in your estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Subscription or workspace plan | Message plans range from $5/month for Chat or Tickets to $15/month for Business. | Number of seats or workspaces, included features, and any support tier. |
| Per-agent | Message includes one task agent and charges $5/month for each additional task agent. | How many specialized agents you need and whether each has a separate limit. |
| Per-message infrastructure | Google Cloud Agent Assist lists $0.002 per standard chat message and $0.003 per enterprise chat message for customers onboarded on or after March 6, 2026. | Expected inbound and outbound messages, message classification, and feature bundles. |
| Per-minute voice | Google Cloud Agent Assist voice SKUs are priced per minute. | Talk time, transfers, recording or transcription features, and peak usage. |
| Carrier and provider charges | Lisa warns that carrier message and data rates may apply; Message notes messaging and third-party provider charges can be separate. | SMS segments, phone-number rental, messaging provider fees, and local carrier pricing. |
How do you calculate a realistic monthly total?
- Count conversations: Estimate inbound messages, agent replies, reminders, and retries separately.
- Choose the correct unit: Use messages for chat metering, minutes for voice, and agents or workspaces for subscription plans.
- Add outbound traffic: A service that only answers incoming texts can cost less than one that sends confirmations, daily briefings, or appointment reminders.
- Add non-software fees: Include a phone number, messaging provider, carrier charges, and any human-support tier.
- Model peak periods: Appointment campaigns and support incidents can create several times your normal volume.
- Compare like with like: Put the same task, channel, message count, and human-review requirement into each estimate.
For illustration, 10,000 standard chat messages at $0.002 each would be $20 in the metered infrastructure layer, while 10,000 enterprise messages at $0.003 each would be $30. Those calculations do not include a phone number, carrier traffic, provider fees, implementation, or human support.

What channel, device, and consent requirements apply?
Confirm operational details before you build a workflow around an agent. Xhuman requires a signed-in account and verified mobile number. Google Messages Magic Compose is limited to supported devices and operates inside Google Messages rather than providing a general-purpose SMS endpoint.
Consent must cover the messages you plan to send. Xhuman and Lisa document opt-in requirements and STOP/HELP controls. Lisa distinguishes requested task messages from unrelated marketing, which requires separate consent. Check whether the service supports your country, carrier, number type, message volume, and outbound use case; the available policies do not establish universal international coverage.
Which type of user should choose which approach?
Choose a drafting tool if you only need wording help
Use an on-device drafting feature when you will read, edit, and send every reply yourself and do not need reminders, scheduling, or outbound calls.
Choose a personal task assistant for reminders and appointments
Look at services that explicitly document confirmations, reminders, scheduling, reservations, or outbound information-gathering calls. Confirm identity checks, AI disclosure, opt-out controls, and whether carrier charges apply before enabling outbound traffic.
Choose a privacy-first option when message content is sensitive
Favor documented on-device processing where the task allows it. If you need cloud-based actions, reject vague policies: ask about staff access, service providers, memory, retention, deletion, and model training before sending confidential data.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteChoose a business agent for focused support workflows
A narrow agent for product answers, classification, or summaries is easier to permission and audit than a broad autonomous assistant. Require escalation, approval gates for money-related actions, and logs that identify what happened.
Choose metered infrastructure for variable enterprise volume
A per-message or per-minute model can fit an established support operation with predictable routing and engineering resources. Budget implementation and provider costs in addition to the published usage rate.
How should you set up and test an SMS AI agent?
Use a controlled rollout rather than forwarding your entire message history on day one.
- Write the task boundary: List permitted actions, forbidden actions, information the agent may access, and cases that must go to a person.
- Choose the channel: Decide between SMS, a messaging app, web chat, or voice, and verify device, number, geography, and outbound support.
- Review the privacy policy: Record processing location, human access, providers, memory, retention, deletion, and training statements.
- Configure consent: Capture opt-in where required, publish
STOPandHELPinstructions, and separate transactional messages from marketing. - Set controls: Require approval for money or account changes, define escalation triggers, and enable logs.
- Run low-risk tests: Test a normal request, an ambiguous request, a prohibited action, a human handoff, an opt-out, and a deletion request.
- Inspect the record: Confirm that the transcript, action, classifier, approval, and escalation state appear as expected.
- Measure real usage: Track inbound and outbound messages, response latency, escalations, human time, and total fees before expanding.
What are the most common selection mistakes?
- Confusing drafting with agency: A feature that rewrites text does not schedule, call, or send messages autonomously.
- Comparing unlike prices: A monthly agent fee and a per-message infrastructure rate are different billing units.
- Ignoring outbound volume: Briefings, confirmations, reminders, and retries can multiply message traffic.
- Assuming “encrypted” means private: Encryption does not tell you who can read content after decryption, how long it is retained, or whether memory is persistent.
- Skipping human-access terms: June’s assisted-plan disclosure shows that authorized staff may read requests.
- Giving broad permissions: Restrict the agent to the workspace and actions it needs; require approval for monetary changes.
- Forgetting opt-out behavior: Test
STOP,HELP, and re-enrollment before launch. - Assuming universal availability: Verify supported devices, carriers, countries, number types, and whether group messaging is supported.
The practical decision is straightforward: define the job, map the data path, enforce approval and escalation, then price the actual traffic. The cheapest service is not a bargain if it cannot perform the required task or exposes information you needed to protect.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a text-message AI work with any phone number?
Not necessarily. Xhuman requires a verified mobile number, and other services may restrict number types, countries, carriers, or outbound traffic. Confirm those eligibility rules before moving an existing workflow or publishing the number to customers.
Can I use an AI texting agent for emergencies?
Do not rely on a consumer or business AI agent for emergency response, urgent medical decisions, or safety-critical instructions. These services can be unavailable, misunderstand context, or wait for human escalation; contact the appropriate emergency or professional service directly.
Do SMS AI agents support group chats?
The documented capabilities describe one-to-one conversations, notifications, or business inboxes rather than universal group-chat support. Ask whether the service can identify participants, preserve consent for every recipient, and keep replies from exposing another person’s data.
Can I move from AI drafting to autonomous actions later?
Usually that is a product and permission change, not a setting you should assume exists. A drafting feature such as Magic Compose remains user-controlled; autonomous scheduling, calling, or reminders require a service that explicitly supports those actions and a fresh review of privacy, consent, and approval controls.
