The best long-term phone is not simply the one with the fastest processor or the longest advertised update promise. Choose the exact model with the longest dated software commitment you can verify, then confirm that batteries, screens and other parts can be obtained and fitted in your country. A seven-year update policy has little value if a failed charging port makes the phone uneconomic to repair in year four.

Use three tests before buying: how long the manufacturer supports this model, how broad and accessible its repair network is, and whether the likely repair cost makes sense over your ownership period. The guide below shows how to check each one, including the EU rules that began applying to covered smartphones on 20 June 2025.

What matters most when choosing a phone for long ownership?

Start with software support, but do not stop there. A phone remains useful only when its operating system, security patches, battery and physical parts all remain serviceable.

Separate operating-system upgrades from security patches

An OS upgrade can add features, change the interface and extend app compatibility. A security patch addresses vulnerabilities without necessarily changing the user experience. Manufacturers sometimes advertise one duration for “updates” without clearly separating those two streams, so record each duration independently.

Use the exact model, not the product family

Support can vary by model, storage version, carrier edition and country. Record the model number, first-sale or first-availability date, and the date from which the manufacturer says its support clock runs. A used phone normally has fewer years remaining because the clock starts with the original availability, not your purchase date.

Treat repairability as part of the specification

Check whether the maker publishes a parts catalogue, how long parts remain available, typical delivery times, repair documentation, battery-replacement options and local repair-provider coverage. A phone with a sealed design may still be a sensible choice if its authorized service network is strong; a modular phone may be a poor choice in a region where parts cannot be delivered.

How long will leading long-support phones get updates?

The following commitments are the dated claims you can verify from the manufacturers’ current documentation. Where a separate OS or security duration is not stated, it is marked rather than inferred.

Model OS-upgrade commitment Security-patch commitment Support-clock qualification Repair and parts evidence
Google Pixel 8 and later Seven years Seven years Begins when the device first became available on the Google Store in the United States; the exact end date depends on that model’s first-availability date. The cited policy establishes software duration; verify battery, screen and local service availability for the exact country before purchase.
Samsung Galaxy S24 Seven generations of OS upgrades Seven years The product environmental report states the duration; an exact calendar end date is not stated there, so calculate it from the model’s support start shown by Samsung for your market. Samsung describes in-store, mail-in and self-repair routes in the United States, with genuine Samsung parts. Its US support statement says parts are available for at least three years after production ends.
Fairphone 5 Eight years of software support A separate security-patch duration is not stated in the cited Fairphone material. Fairphone reports hardware and spare-parts support until at least 2031, a five-year warranty and ten replaceable modules. The replaceable-module design can reduce the need to replace the whole phone, but confirm stock and service coverage where you live.

These figures are commitments, not guarantees that every feature arrives on every date. Read the model-specific support page and note whether the promise applies to your region, carrier variant and purchase channel.

How do I calculate the support period for the phone I am buying?

Write the support end date into your buying notes instead of relying on a slogan such as “up to seven years.” Follow this sequence:

  1. Identify the exact model. Capture the model number, storage configuration and whether it is an unlocked, carrier or regional edition.
  2. Find the first-availability date. Use the manufacturer’s support documentation, not the date a retailer received its stock. Google, for example, starts the Pixel 8-and-later promise when the phone first became available on the Google Store in the US.
  3. Record OS and security durations separately. For the Galaxy S24, write “seven OS generations” and “seven years of security” as two fields. Do not convert generations into a guessed number of years.
  4. Convert the promise into a calendar date. Add the stated duration to the documented support start. If the manufacturer gives only a generation count, leave the OS end date as a range until its update policy supplies a date.
  5. Check the last-patch wording. Look for exclusions such as carrier approval, regional delays or a distinction between feature releases and security maintenance.
  6. Save the page and purchase record. Policies change, and proof of the model and sale date helps a service center determine eligibility.

Can I still get a battery or screen in five years?

Only a parts-and-service check can answer that for a specific phone. Ask for the battery, display, charging connector and other high-wear components individually rather than accepting a general statement that “repairs are supported.”

Parts to verify first

  • Battery and battery adhesive or seals.
  • Front and rear cameras.
  • Charging connector.
  • Buttons, microphones and speakers.
  • Display, back cover and any fold mechanism on a foldable phone.

For each item, record whether it is sold to consumers, supplied only to professional repairers, available through an authorized provider, or not listed. Note the quoted delivery time and whether post-repair calibration or software pairing is required. A part that exists in a catalogue but cannot be delivered locally is not a practical five-year plan.

What the EU rules add

For covered smartphones sold on the EU market from 20 June 2025, ecodesign requirements set a floor for durability, repairability and update availability. The European Commission says critical spare parts must reach professional repairers within five to ten working days and remain available for seven years after the end of sales. The regulation’s covered-part list includes batteries, front and rear cameras, charging connectors, buttons, microphones, speakers and fold mechanisms.

The same EU baseline requires operating-system upgrades to be available for at least five years from the end of placement on the market. It also sets a battery durability benchmark of at least 800 charge cycles while retaining at least 80% of initial capacity. These are market rules for covered products in the EU, not a worldwide guarantee; a phone bought elsewhere may follow different manufacturer and consumer-protection terms.

Where can I get a phone repaired?

Map the repair route before you buy. A manufacturer may offer several channels, but their availability, price and warranty treatment depend on country and model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Samsung Galaxy S24

Samsung’s US support information describes in-store, mail-in and self-repair options and says repairs use genuine Samsung parts. It states that parts are available for at least three years after production ends. That manufacturer statement is shorter than the EU seven-year post-sale availability baseline where the EU rules apply, so an EU buyer should check both the local legal coverage and the model-specific Samsung page.

Apple phones

Apple documents Apple Stores, Authorized Service Providers and Independent Repair Providers that can access genuine parts. It also offers Self Service Repair for selected models and regions. The Parts and Service History feature lets an owner see whether a repair used a genuine, used or unknown part. Availability and warranty treatment vary by country and model, so confirm eligibility before opening a repair order.

Fairphone 5

Fairphone reports ten replaceable modules, hardware and spare-parts support until at least 2031, and a five-year warranty. That design can make a battery, camera or port replacement more feasible than replacing the entire handset, but you still need to confirm that modules are stocked and service is reachable in your country.

Google Pixel 8 and later

Google’s documented strength for these models is the seven-year OS and security commitment. The policy alone does not establish a parts delivery period or a repair provider in every market, so check the local battery-replacement and screen-repair routes separately.

Is a repairable phone worth paying more for?

It can be, when the extra purchase cost is lower than the cost of replacing the entire phone after a predictable failure. Compare total ownership cost rather than the launch price.

Use this ownership-cost calculation

Total ownership cost = purchase price + expected repairs and parts + service fees − resale or trade-in value. Run the calculation for your intended ownership period, such as five, seven or eight years. Use actual quoted prices for your region; do not substitute a global repair estimate.

When a higher-priced repairable model makes sense

  • You plan to keep the phone beyond the first battery’s useful life.
  • The manufacturer publishes a broad parts list and a defined availability period.
  • You have a local authorized provider or a realistic self-repair route.
  • The device’s update commitment extends beyond the period in which you expect to use it.
  • A battery, screen or port replacement costs materially less than a new phone.

When the premium may not pay back

  • You replace phones every two or three years regardless of condition.
  • Parts are technically available but must be imported with long delays or high shipping costs.
  • Only a specialist provider can perform required calibration and none operates nearby.
  • The model’s software support ends before your planned ownership period.

A repairable design reduces waste and may preserve data and accessories, but it does not remove labor, diagnostics or downtime. Include those practical costs in your comparison.

How should I compare durability, warranty and repair risk?

Durability and warranty affect how often you need service, but they do not replace a parts policy.

  • Unlocked for freedom to choose your carrier. Compatible with GSM networks. The phone is unlocked to work with all GSM Carriers & CDMA Carriers Including AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint., Etc. For Developers, Carrier Unlocked models will not allow an Unlocked Boot Loader.

Check the warranty period and exclusions

Write down the warranty length, what it covers, and whether accidental damage, liquid exposure, battery wear or self-repair is excluded. The Fairphone 5’s reported warranty is five years. For other models, use the warranty terms for the country where you will purchase and repair the phone.

Interpret water and dust ratings carefully

The Galaxy S24 product environmental report states IP68 water resistance and dust protection. Treat that as a durability specification, not proof that a repaired or physically damaged phone remains sealed. Ask the service provider how seals are replaced and whether the repair includes any testing or warranty on water resistance.

Understand self-repair trade-offs

Self-repair can reduce labor cost and waiting time, but it shifts diagnostic, tool and calibration work to you. Before opening the phone, confirm that the part is genuine or approved for your model, that required tools are available, and that the warranty terms do not exclude damage caused by the procedure.

What should I ask a seller or repair provider before buying?

Use this checklist during a purchase or service call:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • What is the exact model number and first-availability date?
  • On what date do OS upgrades and security patches end for this model in my country?
  • Are the battery, display, charging port and cameras available separately?
  • How long will each part remain available, and what is the normal delivery time?
  • Can an authorized, independent or mail-in provider repair it locally?
  • Are genuine parts used, and will the phone record the part in a service-history screen?
  • Is post-repair calibration, pairing or diagnostic software required?
  • What warranty remains after a repair or self-repair?
  • What happens if the phone is out of warranty but still within the stated parts period?
  • For an EU purchase, does the model fall under the 20 June 2025 ecodesign requirements?

How can I score competing phones without relying on marketing claims?

Create a simple scorecard and fill it with documented answers. Weight the categories according to how you use the phone.

Category What to record Why it changes the decision
Software OS duration, security duration, support start and calculated end date Determines how long the phone remains secure and compatible.
Parts Battery, screen, port, cameras and other model-specific availability periods Shows whether common failures can be repaired.
Delivery Quoted stock status and delivery time in your country Separates theoretical availability from usable service.
Providers Store, mail-in, authorized, independent and self-repair routes Reveals travel, shipping and downtime burdens.
Durability Warranty, water or dust rating, drop protection and repair exclusions Changes the probability and consequences of a repair.
Cost Purchase price, likely parts and labor, tools, shipping and resale value Produces a realistic ownership-cost comparison.

Do not award points for an unverified claim. Mark an item “not stated” and contact the manufacturer or provider. Missing information is itself a risk, especially when you intend to keep a phone for most of a decade.

What are the most common mistakes?

Counting OS generations as years

A promise of seven OS generations is not automatically seven calendar years. Keep the Galaxy S24’s generation commitment separate from its stated seven-year security period and calculate dates from the documented support start.

Assuming a long update policy guarantees parts

Software and hardware policies are different. The Pixel 8-and-later seven-year promise establishes updates, not a universal battery or screen supply period in every country.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using the launch date instead of first availability

The support clock may start when a model first becomes available in a particular store or market. Google’s Pixel wording explicitly uses first availability on the Google Store in the US.

Rank #4

  • Camera description : Rear
  • Connectivity technology : Bluetooth
  • Display.size : 6.7 inches
  • Memory storage capacity : 128.0 GB
  • Operating system : Android 13.0

Ignoring regional service limits

A repair program described on a US page may not operate in Europe, Asia or another market. Confirm the provider, parts channel and warranty terms for the country where the phone will actually be repaired.

Forgetting calibration and service history

Some repairs require software diagnostics, pairing or calibration after the physical part is installed. Ask who performs that step and how the result appears in the phone’s service history before choosing self-repair.

Which type of buyer should choose each approach?

Choose a long software commitment when security is the priority

Pixel 8 and later provide a clearly stated seven-year OS and security promise tied to first availability in the US. Galaxy S24 combines seven generations of OS upgrades with seven years of security updates. These are strong choices for buyers who prioritize documented software longevity, provided local repair checks also pass.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose modular repairability when hardware longevity is the priority

Fairphone 5 is the clearest fit when replaceable hardware is central to your decision: Fairphone reports ten replaceable modules, five-year warranty coverage, eight years of software support and spare-parts support until at least 2031. Confirm local stock and service before assuming the modular design will be convenient.

Choose a broad service ecosystem when convenience matters most

Apple’s documented mix of Stores, Authorized Service Providers, Independent Repair Providers and selected Self Service Repair routes can give buyers several ways to obtain service. The practical choice still depends on the model and country, and Parts and Service History can help you verify what was installed.

What is the final buying rule?

Buy the model whose support end date covers your intended ownership period, then reject it if the battery, screen and charging-port plan is unclear or unavailable where you live. In the EU, use the 20 June 2025 ecodesign requirements as a minimum baseline, not as a substitute for checking the manufacturer’s own page. The most future-proof phone is the one you can keep secure, repairable and economically serviceable for the years you actually plan to own it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if the retailer gives a different update date from the manufacturer?

Use the manufacturer’s model-specific support page as the controlling reference and ask the retailer to confirm the exact model number. Keep a copy of the policy and your invoice so you can challenge an incorrect listing or establish when the support clock began.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does buying a used phone reduce its remaining update support?

Usually, yes: the support period is tied to the model’s first availability, not the date of your second-hand purchase. Ask the seller for the original model and market, then calculate the remaining period from the documented start date.

Can I replace the battery myself without losing coverage?

Do not assume that self-repair is warranty-neutral. Check the model’s warranty terms, required tools, calibration process and approved-part rules first; if those conditions are unclear, use an authorized or qualified independent provider.

Are the EU repair and update rules valid everywhere?

No. They establish requirements for covered smartphones sold on the EU market from 20 June 2025. Buyers in other regions must rely on the manufacturer’s local policy and the consumer-protection rules that apply there.
