Choose a reference monitor from the delivery standard backward, not from a wide-gamut badge or a headline brightness number. For Rec.709 SDR, look for accurate BT.709 coverage, D65 white, about 100 nits peak luminance and the gamma or EOTF specified for the project. HDR and cinema work require a stricter check of P3 or BT.2020 coverage, PQ or HLG tracking, peak and black luminance, bit depth and chroma format. Then decide whether you need a true reference display with SDI and monitoring tools, or a calibrated computer monitor for editing and review. The right choice is the one that matches the client’s mastering requirement, your signal path and the light-controlled conditions in which you work.

What should I decide before comparing monitors?

Write down the delivery master and the client’s monitoring specification first. A monitor can be excellent for one standard and misleading for another because gamut, transfer function, luminance and black level all change how an image is judged.

Identify the delivery target

  • Rec.709 SDR: Usually requires BT.709 gamut, D65 white point, a controlled SDR level near 100 nits and a project-specified gamma or EOTF.
  • P3 cinema: Requires dependable P3 coverage, a calibrated white point and the luminance and viewing conditions specified by the mastering facility.
  • HDR10 or PQ: Requires PQ tracking, high peak brightness, very low blacks, adequate bit depth and a signal path that preserves the intended chroma format.
  • HLG: Requires a display with a correct HLG mode and stable behavior across the brightness range. EBU Recommendation R 167, version 1.1 published in May 2025, provides predefined HLG modes for reference monitors capable of peak luminance above 1,000 cd/m².
  • BT.2020 delivery: Check whether the monitor can actually accept and reproduce the required gamut; a generic wide-gamut label does not prove BT.2020 performance.

Separate editing from mastering

Decide whether the screen is the final image-quality authority. If a facility, client or studio requires a reference-tier display, that requirement overrides convenience. If final mastering is performed elsewhere, a calibrated computer monitor can be suitable for editing, VFX, review and approval, provided its selected mode and actual output path are measured against the project target.

What are the correct Rec.709 SDR calibration targets?

For a conventional SDR video master, start with BT.709 gamut, D65 white and approximately 100 nits peak luminance. Dolby’s published SDR targets specify BT.1886, commonly treated as Gamma 2.4, or Gamma 2.2, 2.4 or 2.6 when the workflow calls for a different value.

Why the transfer function matters

Gamut describes the colors a monitor can reproduce; the transfer function describes how signal code values become visible brightness. Two screens can both cover BT.709 yet show different shadow and highlight contrast if one is set to the wrong gamma. Select the project’s stated gamma or EOTF, then verify it with a measurement rather than trusting the mode name.

Set the room and luminance together

The 100-nit target assumes a controlled viewing environment. Excessive room light makes a calibrated image appear too dark and can lift perceived blacks; a very dark room can make the same image feel overly bright. Keep the room lighting stable, avoid reflections on the panel and allow the display to warm up before measurement. Do not raise the monitor’s brightness simply because a brighter desktop feels more comfortable: that changes the reference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check grayscale and uniformity

Calibration should cover neutral gray as well as primary and secondary colors. Look for visible tint changes from the center to the edges, banding in near-black steps and brightness variation across the panel. Uniformity errors can cause a grader to compensate for a local defect that is not present in the master.

Which HDR specifications actually determine mastering suitability?

Do not infer professional HDR capability from an HDR badge. Evaluate sustained and peak luminance, black level, local-dimming behavior, EOTF accuracy, bit depth and chroma handling as a complete system.

Dolby’s 2026 Tier 1 reference criteria

Dolby’s 2026 HDR guidance describes Tier 1 reference displays with these minimum characteristics:

Requirement Tier 1 reference criterion Why it matters
Peak luminance At least 1,000 nits Provides headroom for HDR highlights without clipping the intended range.
Black level At or below 0.001 nits Preserves separation in dark scenes and limits raised blacks.
Gamut options P3, BT.2020 and BT.709 Allows the display to be matched to different delivery standards.
White point D65 Maintains the standard video reference white.
EOTF SMPTE 2084 PQ or BT.1886/Gamma 2.4 Ensures code values map to the intended luminance curve.
Input precision 12-bit support Reduces quantization risk during high-dynamic-range evaluation.
Chroma format RGB 4:4:4 Preserves full-resolution color detail for critical inspection.

Tier 2 displays are aimed at editing, VFX, review and education and have lower minimums. They may be entirely appropriate when a separate facility performs final mastering, but they should not be represented as equivalent to a Tier 1 mastering reference.

Peak versus sustained brightness

A brief windowed peak is not the same as stable full-screen output. Ask how long the display can hold its rated luminance, whether thermal protection dims the panel and how local dimming changes brightness from shot to shot. Measure the mode you will actually use, not a showroom preset.

Local dimming and black behavior

Local dimming can produce deep blacks, but blooming around subtitles, stars or small highlights may alter what you see. Zone transitions can also change during camera moves. For grading, inspect difficult mixed-contrast scenes and record whether the behavior is repeatable at the viewing angle and distance used in the room.

Dolby Vision workflows

There is no single universal professional display certified for every Dolby Vision job. Ask the client or studio which mastering tier, metadata workflow and monitoring device they require before purchasing. A display that is excellent for HDR10 may still be unsuitable for a specified Dolby Vision pipeline.

Do I need a true reference display or a calibrated computer monitor?

A true reference display is justified when it is the mastering or QC authority, when the workflow requires SDI and dedicated scopes, or when a client specifies a reference tier. A calibrated computer monitor is often sufficient for editing, VFX, review and approval when final mastering occurs elsewhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What a reference display adds

Dolby describes a reference display as a specialized device designed to serve as a true image-quality reference. Such displays are built to conform closely to industry color and EOTF standards and may include 12G-SDI, waveform and vectorscope monitors, false-color analysis, LUT import and signal-metadata detection. These tools reduce dependence on separate hardware and make it easier to verify the incoming signal.

When a computer monitor is the practical choice

Editing applications, offline work, VFX and client review often benefit more from resolution, workspace and ergonomic flexibility than from integrated SDI hardware. A computer monitor can work when it offers a measured target mode, a stable signal path and calibration controls. Feed it a known output from the workstation or video I/O device, disable operating-system color changes that are not part of the managed pipeline and confirm the result with a probe.

SDI is a workflow requirement, not a quality guarantee

SDI can provide a dedicated video path and support professional monitoring equipment, but SDI alone does not guarantee accurate color. A display with HDMI or DisplayPort can be accurate if the workstation output, application, graphics driver and display mode are correctly configured. Conversely, an expensive SDI monitor can mislead if it is in the wrong gamut or EOTF mode.

How do calibration and profiling work together?

Calibration adjusts a display to a known behavior; profiling records how that calibrated display behaves so color-management systems can communicate between devices. The International Color Consortium summarizes the relationship as: “Display calibration and profiling are used in combination to achieve consistent colour on your display.”

Hardware calibration

A monitor with a hardware LUT can apply corrections inside the display rather than relying entirely on the computer’s graphics card. This generally preserves more useful output precision and lets you store separate targets for SDR, PQ or HLG, when the model supports them. Verify which inputs and picture modes share the LUT; some displays apply calibration only to a designated port or preset.

Built-in sensor or external colorimeter

A built-in sensor can automate routine checks and scheduled recalibration, but it still needs a correct target and a clean screen. External colorimeters can be useful when supported by the manufacturer’s software and when the instrument is appropriate for the panel technology. Keep the probe’s diffuser and the display surface clean, and position the sensor consistently for repeatable readings.

Plan recalibration

Set a calendar based on operating hours, facility policy and how critical the work is. Recheck after moving the monitor, changing the backlight or panel mode, updating calibration software or noticing a visible drift. Store reports with the project or facility records so an approval session can be recreated later.

What signal-path details should I verify?

The monitor can only show what reaches it. Confirm the complete chain from the application to the panel, including the workstation output, video I/O hardware, cable, input mode and internal processing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Signal-path check Question to ask Typical failure symptom
Bit depth Does the GPU or I/O device output the required 10-bit or 12-bit signal, and does the display accept it on the selected input? Banding, posterization or a mode that silently falls back to 8-bit.
Chroma Is RGB 4:4:4 required, and does every device preserve it? Soft colored edges or fine text despite a sharp luma channel.
Color range Are legal/video levels or full/data levels configured consistently? Crushed blacks, clipped highlights or a washed-out image.
HDR metadata Does the path pass the metadata or select the correct PQ/HLG mode manually? Incorrect tone mapping or an SDR-looking HDR signal.
Application output Is the grading application sending a managed video signal rather than a desktop preview? Different colors between the viewer and an external monitor.
Processing Are sharpening, dynamic contrast, noise reduction and automatic brightness disabled? Edges, contrast or brightness change when the image content changes.

Use test patterns and a probe after every major change. A screenshot or operating-system color profile is not a substitute for checking the signal presented to the monitor’s video input.

How should room, size and ergonomics affect the choice?

Choose a size and resolution that let you inspect detail without moving your head constantly, while keeping the entire screen inside a controlled viewing zone. A large HDR panel can be technically capable yet uncomfortable if the viewing distance is too short or the room cannot control reflections.

Viewing distance and resolution

Higher resolution helps with focus, texture and fine compositing work, but it does not correct an inaccurate gamut or EOTF. Place the monitor so the full image is visible at a consistent angle; extreme off-axis viewing can change perceived black level and color, especially on panels with limited viewing-angle stability.

Uniformity and panel stability

Ask for uniformity data when available and inspect the panel after it reaches operating temperature. Watch for fan noise, heat and automatic brightness changes during long sessions. A display that shifts as it warms can invalidate a calibration made immediately after power-on.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lighting and reflections

Use neutral, indirect room lighting and keep windows or bright fixtures out of the panel’s reflection path. For SDR, a stable environment is especially important because the 100-nit reference is intended to be judged against a controlled surround. HDR rooms also need predictable ambient light so shadow detail is not judged differently from one session to the next.

Which current displays illustrate the trade-offs?

Specifications below are manufacturer-published figures and should be confirmed for the exact firmware, mode and input used in your facility.

Display Published specifications Workflow implications
EIZO ColorEdge CG2700X 27 inches; 3,840 × 2,160; 500 cd/m² typical brightness; 1,450:1 contrast; 98% DCI-P3; built-in calibration sensor. EIZO documents Rec.709, Rec.2020 and DCI-P3 presets, PQ and HLG presets, and scheduled calibration across the ColorEdge range. Confirm the required external video path and whether the selected preset meets the client’s reference tier.
Apple Pro Display XDR 32 inches; 6K resolution; P3 gamut; true 10-bit color; up to 1,600 nits peak brightness; factory-calibrated reference modes. What is the step-by-step buying process?

  1. Record the delivery standard. Write down Rec.709 SDR, P3 cinema, HDR10/PQ, HLG or BT.2020, along with any client-supplied mastering or QC specification.
  2. Select the gamut and EOTF. For SDR, start with BT.709 and the specified BT.1886 or gamma value. For HDR or cinema, identify P3 or BT.2020 and PQ or HLG.
  3. Set luminance and black requirements. Use the project’s SDR level or HDR tier. For Dolby Tier 1 HDR, check for at least 1,000 nits peak and no more than 0.001 nits black level.
  4. Verify precision and chroma. Confirm 10-bit or 12-bit handling, RGB 4:4:4 where required, and the workstation or I/O device’s actual output rather than its advertised maximum.
  5. Choose the workflow class. Select a true reference display when SDI, built-in scopes, LUT and metadata tools or a specified mastering tier are required. Otherwise evaluate calibrated computer monitors that can be measured in the intended mode.
  6. Inspect stability. Check uniformity, viewing angle, thermal behavior, local dimming, fan noise, automatic brightness and ergonomic placement.
  7. Confirm calibration support. Prefer a hardware LUT, built-in sensor or documented colorimeter compatibility, and establish a recalibration schedule before the monitor enters production.
  8. Validate the final candidate. Connect the actual workstation and video path, warm the display, measure the target mode, run test patterns and obtain client or studio approval where required.

What mistakes cause color-grading monitors to mislead editors?

Buying by gamut percentage alone

A high coverage number does not prove correct white point, EOTF, luminance or black level. A monitor can cover a wide color space while showing a Rec.709 master with the wrong contrast curve.

Using an HDR preset for SDR

HDR presets commonly raise luminance and change tone mapping. Select a dedicated SDR mode for Rec.709 work and measure it at the intended target rather than leaving the display in its factory HDR setting.

Trusting factory calibration forever

Factory calibration is a useful starting point, not a permanent guarantee. Panels, backlights and sensors drift; verify the mode at the interval appropriate for your workload.

Ignoring the application and operating system

A calibrated panel cannot repair an unmanaged viewer, an incorrect range setting or a GPU path that converts the signal unexpectedly. Compare the application viewer with an independent video output and use known test patterns.

Confusing peak brightness with usable HDR

Check sustained output, thermal dimming, local-dimming artifacts and EOTF tracking. A short-lived peak figure does not describe how a long bright sequence will look.

Assuming SDI makes a display a reference

SDI is valuable when the workflow needs it, but accuracy still depends on the display mode, calibration and measurement. Treat connectivity as one selection criterion, not a certification.

How can I validate a monitor after installation?

Begin with the room and signal path you will use every day, not a temporary showroom setup.

  1. Place the display in its final position, remove reflections and allow it to reach stable operating temperature.
  2. Select the exact preset for the delivery target and disable non-reference enhancements such as dynamic contrast, automatic brightness and sharpening.
  3. Connect the production workstation or video I/O device with the intended cable and confirm bit depth, range, chroma and metadata behavior.
  4. Run calibration with the supported hardware LUT or colorimeter, then create a profile for the calibrated state.
  5. Measure white point, luminance, black level, grayscale, primary colors, EOTF and uniformity with test patterns.
  6. Review difficult footage: near-black gradients, saturated highlights, skin tones, subtitles over bright backgrounds and fast changes in local-dimming zones.
  7. Save the calibration report, monitor mode, firmware, signal settings and date so future approvals use the same conditions.

If the measured result misses the client’s tolerance, change one variable at a time: room light, display mode, calibration target, output range or I/O configuration. Re-measure after each change instead of compensating by eye.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I grade video on a laptop screen?

A laptop can support rough editing and creative decisions, but its brightness, viewing angle, automatic power behavior and color-management path may change with battery state or ambient light. Use it for non-critical work unless you can lock a measured mode and verify the actual video output against the delivery target.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How often should a reference monitor be recalibrated?

There is no universal interval because drift depends on panel technology, hours, temperature and facility policy. Establish a documented schedule, then recalibrate sooner after relocation, firmware or calibration-software changes, backlight adjustments, or a visible shift in neutral gray.

Do online video platforms require a reference display?

The platform’s delivery specification and your role determine the need. If you are editing for approval while another facility performs mastering, a measured computer monitor may be adequate; if you are responsible for the final master or QC sign-off, use the client’s specified reference tier.

Why do my scopes look correct while the picture looks wrong?

Scopes describe the signal, not necessarily the display’s reproduction. A wrong gamut, EOTF, range conversion, local-dimming behavior or viewing environment can make a correctly encoded signal appear inaccurate, so verify both the scopes and the calibrated monitor path.
